  1. Don’t forget abt the maid oso hor http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/driver-sentenced-to-one-week-s-jail-for-accident-which-led-to-10547298
  2. The Fiat Punto is the first car to have a zero star NCAP rating.. https://www.msn.com/en-sg/cars/news/fiat-punto-the-first-car-ever-to-be-awarded-zero-stars-following-euro-ncap-crash-tests/ar-BBGFYaG?ocid=spartandhp Do you know of any current production cars with poor safety ratings?
  3. Some Friday night food for thought... arguing with CO about my driving style is never ending. She feels that I drive too fast, too recklessly, whereas I feel confident in my ability and in control of the car. How to argue without seeming complacent? Is it complacent or arrogant to say I feel confident in my driving? Then the argument is that driving at lower speed will cause less damage if an accident happens, got more time to react..the usual..which is not wrong. So then why does anyone drive fast? What is "fast"? Why do carmakers make cars with different performance? Given that most countries have speed limits which are way below what a modern car is capable of, why bother to make a vehicle that can go above speed limits? If I were a bmw or merc exec, having studied the singapore car market, I would just make my cars with as small an engine as possible and limit the top speed to 90km/h. Singaporean badge whores (no offence meant here) would lap up my cars and I would be making huge margins by making consumers pay a premium for nothing more than the badge. Until truly autonomous cars become reality this would be the best way to go, no? Sorry for rambling...just wanna see what opinions there are out there. cheers
  4. Wah piang eh.. Buay tahan liao! Some drivers simply don't see the importance of the brake lights especially the 3rd brake light. Can we take pictures of these cars and submit to LTA? Not i jiak ba boh sai pang but these cars when they brake, u dont even know they brake if u r not alert! Especially without 3rd brake light. Sorry for friday rant but alot of taxis and old cars dont bother to repair.
  5. Sumo in uproar as women first responders ordered out of ring TOKYO (AP) — The head of Japan's sumo association has apologized over an incident in which women first responders were asked to get out of the ring as they attempted to revive an official who collapsed. In sumo's tradition, the ring is considered sacred and women are prohibited from entering. That posed a problem Wednesday when Ryozo Tatami, the 67-year-old mayor of Maizuru in northern Kyoto, collapsed during a ring-top speech. Two women, apparently medical experts, rushed in and started performing first aid as several male sumo officials surrounding the mayor looked on. When two more women rose to the ring trying to join the first aid effort, announcements demanded the women get out of the ring. "Ladies, please get off the ring," a sumo referee said, determinedly. "Only gentlemen go up." Footage posted on social media triggered outrage, with many criticizing sumo officials and saying they were choosing tradition over life. The incident reminded me of the weird regulations that Woman were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia (it was lifted only late of last year). Imagine in a life threaten situation, and only with women, and yet they (whom know how to drive - maybe got their driving license overseas) are not allowed to drive the victim to seek further medical treatment? Life is less important?? We are lucky to be born here...
  6. Hi, My company is looking for the above for a 2-3 weeks assignment at a construction site in the east. The job is to be present on-site during the operation of a gondola to install a fixture on a 9 storey building. PM me your costs, $$$ and we can discuss from there. Thanks
  7. i'm looking hard at cars with a depre less than 10k/year and have traction control and 6 airbags. Another additional bonus requirement would have been preferably crash tested by IIHS (Euro ncap is unlikely for these asian vehicles) Basically to me, IIHS testing is probably the most rigorous and independent testing standard. So i would take that as the gold standard. I've not really bothered with AseanNCAP before but i guess still better than nothing. They don't do frontal overlaps from my cursory glance. So far i've short listed, a) Elantra http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/hyundai/elantra-4-door-sedan a pity that i30 has 2 airbags for it's price ... https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/hyundai/i30/27355 b) Vios - asean ncap 5 stars for all it's worth... http://www.aseancap.org/v2/?p=3919 c) Axio - has toyota safety sense - i'm guessing same as vios? - but additional bonus of safety sense. Can do collision mitigation braking d) Corolla just creeping in under 10k depre with the latest COE and finally a full airbag complement http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/toyota/corolla-4-door-sedan/2018 e) Vezel - has honda sensing as a 1k option - doesn't do well for a small overlap but still G for moderate overlap - but with the honda sensing, that would avoid some easily avoidable frontal collisions http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/honda/hr-v-4-door-suv If there's any model i missed out. do let me know. mitubishi attrage has supposedly 6 airbags, but i can't find any crash testing data.
  8. Apparently need to buy a module to remove the safety features that block dvd/certain features of navigation/phone book while car in motion/gear engaged. Contacted Elebest and Autospritze - module not available. Net search revealed the following. http://www.prestigioussociety.com/ http://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-fourth-generation/742692-beat-sonic-bb6223-nav-dvd-bypass-module-install-tips-and-review.html Want to enable the feature for passenger to view. Once enable, also keen to install latest digital TV + keen to install 2 monitors for rear seats viewing. Experts in the forum, assist pls.
  9. Kind of curious, how closely do you follow the car in front on the expressway? EVERYDAY I see people following so closely. EVERY SINGLE day on a crowded expressway during peak hours. I am sure there are some of them here in MCF? The big question I have is WHY WHY? I know this has been discussed previously but I just had an accident on my new car a few weeks back so I thought to raise the awareness again. Driving during peak hour on the ECP. The guy in front of me was braking so I started braking too... then all of a sudden he probably slam his brakes because I see he came to a complete stop really fast. As his brake light was already on, there is no visual cues other than his car coming close really fast of a sudden. So I hit my brakes much harder and I managed to come to a stop. the car B behind me just kissed my bumper. Slight damage... The car C further behind slammed his brakes and avoided hitting car B but I think there was car D and E which all slammed together into car C..... There was injuries on C D E. Car B ask to settle privately as damage was minor..... the point of this story is PLEASE claim these tail gatters as much as you legally can. let this be a deterrent... if you want to follow closely... please pay the price when accidents happen. Because there is no way you can stop in time during an emergency brake.
  10. Headlight performance and crash prevention systems are key. Seems logical https://youtu.be/CbOnFMgSsCw Full List here: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/TSP-List
  11. To showcase how far the industry has come in terms of safety, Euro NCAP has put together a demonstration featuring two small family cars built 20 years apart and crashing them. The two cars in questions are the 1997 Rover 100 and the current Honda Jazz. While the Honda Jazz is a five-star car in Euro NCAP's books, the Rover 100 received only one star out of the four available stars back then. Other cars like the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo managed three stars. Euro NCAP have been crash-testing cars since 1997 and they have published over 630 safety ratings, crash-tested around 1,800 vehicles and spent over €160 million with hopes of making the automotive industry safer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwGgRUkrnng
  12. There seems to be no thread on blind spot sensor system, so I thought I start it so we all can learn from one another. This thread is for discussion on where to get one, not whether it's useful or not (that's a whole topic by itself ;-) ) It seems to me it's not easily available in Singapore. I have not found a shop that supplies any model. There are many online (e.g. http://list.qoo10.sg/item/CRIMESTOPPER-SAFETYPLUS-TM-UNIVERSAL-FRONT-REAR-BLIND-SPOT-DETECTION/445644618, http://list.qoo10.sg/item/BOYO-VTBSD1-BLIND-SPOT-DETECTION-MICROWAVE-RADAR/487327327) but I'd like to see the item first before buying. Seems like http://www.crimestopper.com/products/safety/collision-avoidance/blind-spot-detection/bsd-754 is available based on the vendors here If you know the shop that supplies it, and have experienced on any of the model, kindly share here. Thanks in advance e1
  13. Hello, wanna share this interesting app that I saw in facebook. currently there's a challenge going on named Singapore's best driver. The top prizes are a year petrol and held by some insurer, felt its pretty fun and interesting. We always feel our driving skills matches those F1 drivers, hence this is the time to prove it. basically this app, drivewell is a complete telematics and behavioral analytics solution for the connected car world. It consists of three components to accurately measure driving performance and vehicle dynamics. I hope I'm not outdated yet plus I have search before posting a new thread. Neither am I related nor working for the apps or insurer. since there's a year free petrol and it promotes road safety, it's gonna be fun.
  14. Last time, I remember what ever thing we buy or use must have the SAFETY mark sticker from PSB (now SPRING). retailers are not allow to sell things without the safety marks.... now the market is flooded with electrical items that are not tested for safety... means we can use, but at our own risk.... i saw so many different kind of wall receptacle with USB charger in Sim Lim... so tempted... but if something happens to the house (eg. fire la... bla bla bla caused but this item), does insurance still cover?

  18. Hi, any idea if removing of spare tyre compromises on the structural safety of a car? some people says if the spare tyre comes stock with the car, removing the spare tyre will actually makes the car crample more when other car hit from behind, therefore the spare tyre act as some form of "cushion" for rear seat passengers. Some says this is especially important for hatchbacks. Any expert views on this? I have almost not used the spare tyre for past 5 years, eversince i bought a portable pump in car, flat tyres are always pumped up and driven to tyre shop immediately to mend tyres. so am thinking of removing the spare tyre to free up the bootspace. any advice?
  19. Hello everyone, For people with full size spare tires, please check your spare tire's pressure periodically, say every six months. I checked mine earlier this week, the pressure has dropped to an unusable 150 kPa (1.5 bar or 21.8 psi); I only pumped it to 250 kPa about a year ago. Further, mine was already more than five years old; while it has never been mounted on the car before, I decided to change it this morning, as it would have suffered from rubber deterioration. Unless one has X-rays' eyes like Superman to inspect the tire's internal structure, one would not know if the steel radial cords and the rubber have lost their bonding and the tire's structural integrity is compromised and therefore unusable. A five year old tire should not be put in service, regardless of tread wear and usage pattern. Some may think it is a waste of money to change your spare tire which one hardly use; if you just drive in Singapore and distances are very short (50 - 100 km), I think it is OK to use your old spare tire and drive to your usual tire shop for repair and replacement. However, if you travel to Malaysia sometimes, I think a functional spare tire (full size spare or temporary spare) or tire repair kit is important, so that your mobility and safety are not compromised. Drive safely, regularly maintain your vehicle and you would enjoy many years of safe motoring.
  20. Have been seeing this long mirror like thingy on the door pillar (between driver and rear pax) & mostly in those silver cabs..... any idea what it does or purpose ??
