    Big dreams for Volvo

New Volvo owner, Geely, said that it intends to compete in the premium sector's top segment by taking on the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. "We want to make more high-level cars that compete with the S class of Mercedes Benz and the 7 series of BMW. We need products to compete in that segment," said Li Shufu, chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. in an interview with Reuters.Currently, Volvo's largest sedan offering is the S80, which sells for far less than an Audi A8 or an S-Class. Li also mentioned that Volvo would have to sell around 380,000 units a year in order to achieve profitability. But, he added, that the volume would have to be much higher than that if the brand wants to be truly competitive. Last year, Volvo sold a total of just 335,000 vehicles. Geely has already paid Ford USD $1.5 billion in cash. Both companies have not offered specifics on when Geely will pay Ford the remainder of the $1.8 billion purchase price set back in March. Geely will have to go through the books at Volvo before any final payment is agreed upon and made. The deal also calls for Ford and Geely to continue to share components and technology.

  6. China is now the world's largest auto market and GM's biggest market by volume. GM posted record sales in China for the first half of 2010, with a resounding 48.5 percent increase in sales over the same period last year. GM sold 1,209,138 vehicles it builds in concert with its Chinese partners in the country for the first six months of 2010, compared to unit sales of 1,069,577 in the United States. GM sales were buoyed by the popularity of models such as the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Cruze and new Chevrolet Sail. GM's Buick is also one of the fastest-growing brands in China. GM now ranks second in China, behind Volkswagen, in unit sales. China is also now VW's largest market. Last year, China overtook the United States as the world's largest vehicle market, albeit, after the U.S. experienced a precipitous drop in car sales due to the financial crisis of 2008-2009. For the first five months of this year, vehicles sales in China were 7.1 million compared to 4.6 million in the U.S. Therefore, it is not surprising to find players such as Porsche customizing engine options for the Chinese market, as mentioned in my earlier post.
  7. Other than using body , how do you think a sales person is good? 8. Boosted by its new entry-level Ghost limousine that was launched in most markets in December '09, Rolls Royce sales surged to 678 cars during the first five months of 2010, recording an impressive 146 per cent increase year on year. The new Ghost sells for around US$250,000 as compared to US$380,000 to US$450,000 price tag of the four available variants of the British firm's flagship Phantom series, thus opening a new market for Rolls Royce. Last year, the BMW Group-owned brand saw its sales fall by 17 per cent to just over 1,000 units, which led the maker cut production and fire some temporary workers. Rolls Royce boss, Torsten M

  10. It looks like Ferrari's love affair with China isn't one-sided. According to a recent report, the Prancing Horse moved a total of 220 cars in China last year, and of those, 20 percent were snapped up by well-to-do women. That means China's ladies are buying Ferraris at four times the rate of their western counterparts. Why? It all has to do with business. Ferrari says there are somewhere between 400-500 millionaires in China and that a fair portion of those are women who have earned their money by building and operating competitive businesses. They've got cash, and they want the toys that come with it. Interestingly enough, the company also said that the average age of a Chinese Ferrari buyer is 10 years younger than in Europe or North America. If you were looking for proof that the automotive industry is shifting its focus from the west, look no further.

  12. From Yahoo.news: http://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/201004...ts-7318940.html Toyota halts Lexus SUV sales after safety warning Reuters - Wednesday, April * Toyota asks U.S. dealers to suspend sales of Lexus GX 460 * Consumer Reports warns: 2010 Lexus 'safety risk' * Toyota says no decision yet on action in other markets * Toyota shares up 0.4 pct, matching Nikkei rise By Kevin Krolicki and David Bailey TOKYO/DETROIT, April 13 - Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> has suspended sales of a new Lexus SUV in the U.S. market to investigate the risk for rollover accidents in the latest blow to the reputation of the world's largest automaker. Toyota took the unusual action of stopping sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after Consumer Reports urged shoppers not to buy the sport utility vehicle, calling it a "safety risk" because of a potential handling problem in certain turns. Toyota, which also sells the Lexus GX in the Middle East, Oceania and Russia, said no decision has been made on whether sales would be suspended in those markets as well. Although the luxury SUV is a low-volume model for Toyota, the potential problem with its stability control adds to the toll from a safety crisis that has cost Toyota billions of dollars in lost sales and forced it to resort to cut-rate pricing. Shares of Toyota, which have are up 13 percent since early February, opened lower but were up less than half a percent in morning trade in Tokyo on Wednesday. The stock remains down 11 percent from late January when the first in a series of large recalls was announced. "Our understanding is that there is no problem with models other than the GX 460, since we have not received reports of problems," said Toyota spokeswoman Mieko Iwasaki. Toyota said its engineers were "vigorously testing" the SUV to identify the risk cited by Consumer Reports. The magazine said its own testing found the Lexus was prone to slide when driven in sweeping turns. The rare warning from the nonprofit magazine, which is seen as an objective voice on auto safety and quality in North America, stands out because its past endorsements have been credited as one reason for Toyota's steady sales growth. Toyota has sold about 5,400 of the Lexus GX 460 SUVs in the four months since it has been on the market. The GX, which is based on the same platform as the off-road ready Toyota 4Runner, starts at just over $50,000. A similar SUV has been sold in Japan and elsewhere as the Prado although the new version of the Lexus GX is now substantially different, Toyota's Iwasaki said. The automaker said it would provide a loaner vehicle until a remedy is available to owners who are concerned. The last time Consumer Reports concluded that a vehicle was "not acceptable" for consumers to buy was in 2001, when it warned consumers away from the Mitsubishi Montero Limited. "This is the last thing Toyota needs right now," said IHS Global Insight analyst Aaron Bragman, who said it was more likely that Toyota would have to continue to resort to steep discounts of up to $5,000 to win back consumers. Toyota has struggled under massive recalls due to defective sticky accelerator pedals and the potential for floormats to entrap the accelerator. The sticky accelerator pedals also led to U.S. sales and production halts. SOFTWARE GLITCH? U.S. safety regulators have proposed a record $16.4 million fine against Toyota, the highest allowed, accusing the automaker of knowingly delaying a recall over the defective accelerator pedals and may seek more penalties. The recalls also sparked congressional hearings and numerous lawsuits. The automaker's U.S. sales fell 16 percent year-over-year in January and 9 percent in February before rising 41 percent in March under unprecedented incentives. U.S. officials are continuing a probe into whether unintended acceleration, which Toyota has attributed to mechanical issues, also could have been caused by electronics issues. The GX represented about 10 percent of U.S. Lexus sales in the first quarter, industry-tracking firm Edmunds.com said. But Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group, said the problem identified by Consumer Reports could bring renewed attention to potential software glitches. Some safety advocates have suggested such problems could be behind reports of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles, a claim the automaker says there is no evidence to support. "It is another chink in their armor and an indication that perhaps they do have software problems not only in this vehicle but in other vehicles as well," Virag said. Consumer Reports said the sliding its test drivers found in the GX 460 could cause rollover accidents resulting in serious injury or death. It said it knew of no reports of such accidents. It said the risk of a rollover accident in the GX 460 was significant because it is a tall SUV with a high center of gravity. No other SUV had slid as far as the Lexus in its recent testing, including the Toyota 4Runner, the magazine said. 13. There are good problems and there are bad problems. Audi dealers across the U.S. are having trouble selling vehicles, but not because of uncompetitive product or industry-wide sales woes. Automotive News reports the reason for Audi's sales troubles have everything to do with a supply shortage that stems from strong first quarter sales. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen reportedly told AN that U.S. dealers are "short of everything," with Q5 and Q7 supplies running especially low. Last year, Audi cut U.S. deliveries by 6,000 units due to weak sales here in the States, but the German luxury automaker saw brisk sales in December followed by a first quarter that bested the first three months of 2009 by 35 percent. Audi now has a 29 day supply of product for U.S. dealers; about half the typical 60 day reserve and a third of the 88 day supply of March, 2009. De Nysschen says Audi has allotted an additional 3,000 vehicles to the U.S. for 2010, which should help dealers a bit. That said, we're thinking Audi isn't looking to beef up inventories too much considering the fact that the Four-Ringed automaker managed to keep incentives in check at a time when other automakers are dumping truckloads of cash on the hood to boost their sales.

It sold 250 vs BMW's 199 only. Mercedes is still way ahead with 512. VW is also doing very well, just 2 short of Nissan's 399. Toyota remains the people's choice. Kia is now No2!

  16. Rising COE premiums are set to hit sales of budget brands most, say industry experts IT HAS happened before. Sky-high COE premiums 'kill off' cheap new cars but send buyers to upmarket brands. Certificates of entitlement (COEs) for cars are now between $28,000 and $42,000 - at least $15,000 costlier than average premiums last year. And they are poised to go higher still, say motor traders and industry watchers. Also likely to be hit are parallel imports. The sale of off-peak cars - those with red plates and subject to restricted use - which the Government has been encouraging, may dive too. But the used cars business, which was in the doldrums while COEs were plentiful and prices were 'low', is set for a revival. The chief reason for the mixed fortunes, as far as new vehicles are concerned, are the dealers' profit margins.

  18. CorporateJuly 13, 2009 Honda to Begin Sales of Two More Hybrid Models in 2010 TOKYO, Japan, July 13, 2009 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced plans to begin sales in Japan of the CR-Z sporty hybrid model in February 2010 and Fit Hybrid before the end of 2010. By combining these two models with the currently available Insight and Civic Hybrid, Honda will further enhance its lineup of compact hybrid models, which leverage the unique characteristics of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA), including compact size, lightweight and high efficiency. In addition, Honda is currently developing a new hybrid system which is intended to be installed on mid- to large-size vehicles. Honda also announced that, in addition to the No. 1 line at its Suzuka Factory, the production of Insight also began on Suzuka's No. 3 line in mid-June 2009, leveraging Honda's flexible production system. In order to continue contributing to the global effort to reduce CO2 emissions, Honda will continue to focus on research and development of technologies which improve fuel-efficiency and strive to deliver products with improved environmental performance to as many customers as possible by making such products more accessible to all people. The CR-Z concept vehicle made its world debut at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in 2007. The CR-Z sporty hybrid will feature advanced technologies that deliver enjoyable driving for all while reducing the vehicle's environmental footprint.
  19. NEW car sales slowed by nearly 30 per cent last year on the back of a big cut in COE supply. According to Land Transport Authority data, 68,862 new cars rolled off showroom floors last year, 29.3 per cent fewer than in 2008 and the lowest number in seven years. But because far fewer cars were scrapped or exported, the car population grew despite the drop in sales. Car numbers rose by 4.8 per cent to 566,608 by end-December, busting the Government's 1.5 per cent growth cap. Overall, the vehicle population inched upwards by 3.4 per cent to 925,518. Car owners have put the brakes on buying - choosing to hold on to their current vehicles - in recent years. Reasons include the financial turmoil that gripped the world from the second half of 2008 to late last year, as well as the huge loans that many had incurred on cars between 2003 and 2008. As 80 per cent of cars here are below four years old, dealers said there is naturally a lower demand for replacements, which in turn reduced the supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs). Related links: Top 10 Selling Brands This contrasts with sales only 10 years ago when Singapore motorists were trading in their vehicles which were as new as two years old. COE supply is largely determined by the number of vehicles taken off the road. Based on this factor, supply this year is expected to dip again. 'I think the quota will be cut by at least 15 per cent,' said Mr Neo Nam Heng, president of the Automotive Importers and Exporters Association. He said the fact that the car population grew despite a 29.3 per cent shrinkage in COE supply last year is a clear sign that the quota could be reduced further. But other motor traders said determination of the supply must be tempered by the fact that the demand for replacement vehicles could accelerate in the near future. Mr Ron Lim, general manager of Nissan agent Tan Chong Motors, said: 'When the economy really picks up, those with four-, five-, six-year-old cars will come back onto the market with a vengeance. And there could be a real shortage of COEs then.' The Government said last year that it was reviewing the formula by which COE supply is determined. It is expected to announce a new formula soon. Last year's sizeable shrinkage in the quota has led to fierce competition among motor firms, a trend that is likely to escalate this year. Toyota agent Borneo Motors was first off the block when it cut $6,000 off its Corolla and Vios tags over Christmas. The offer is good till Jan 20. Rivals have responded, but Mazda Singapore is probably the most aggressive. It slashed about $8,000 off its Mazda 3 cars, bringing the price to $65,600. 'This is below cost,' said Mazda Singapore marketing manager Philip Lu. 'But we have no choice. We have to fight the market.' Meanwhile, Borneo Motors secured Toyota's pole position in the sales race for the seventh year running in 2009 with 13,419 cars sold. Hyundai followed as a distant second, with 6,628 units. Volkswagen made it to the top 10 bestsellers' list for the first time by doubling sales to 2,421 units. But the brand that chalked the biggest growth in the list was Kia - up 116 per cent to 4,299 cars. Mercedes-Benz and BMW remained the only luxury brands in the top ranking. A star performer in the super high-end segment was Lamborghini, which outsold Ferrari once again. It sold 50 cars, versus 32 Ferraris. Lamborghini Singapore managing director Melvin Goh, however, played down his triumph, saying: 'It was a walkover because Ferrari had a change of dealership last year, and there were no cars from the factory for a while.' Mr Goh nevertheless expects to match last year's sales this year. source http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/...118-192523.html
