  1. Metro closing down sales @ Century Square... Sales till National Day...
  2. Sources: http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/sales-of-diesel-cars-rising-at-fast-pace Diesel models have become the fastest-growing segment of cars, with interest fuelled by revised taxation, the carbon emission-based vehicle scheme (CEVS), lower running costs and an overall improvement in diesel technology. According to Land Transport Authority data, there are now close to 5,000 diesel-powered passenger cars on the road - up from fewer than 150 five years ago. With the quantum leap in growth, the diesel car population has now outstripped the cohort of cars that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) and is expected to overtake petrol-electric hybrids soon. There are now around 6,200 such hybrids and fewer than 2,000 CNG cars. After being largely ignored in the last several decades, diesel cars began to sway buyers in 2013 when a special tax for such vehicles was slashed for cleaner models. For Euro 5 diesel cars, the tax is 40 cents per cubic cm of engine displacement versus $1.25 for Euro 4. For those which did not meet Euro 4 emission standard, the tax was several times the vehicle's road tax. CEVS - with rebates and penalties pegged to a car's carbon emission - was also rolled out in 2013, and made more stringent this year. As diesel cars produce far less CO2 than petrol equivalents, they qualify for CEVS rebates more easily. A 130bhp power cap for Category A certificate of entitlement (COE) was also announced in 2013. As diesel cars tend to produce less power but more torque, dealers began offering more such models two years ago. And consumers have warmed up to them. Volvo agent Wearnes Automotive sold 52 diesel cars in 2013, 530 last year and 444 in the first half of this year. Peugeot agent AutoFrance said its diesel car sales doubled from 2013 to last year, and trebled from last year to this year. In fact, diesel cars now make up half of its total sales. Shipyard manager Avery Yeo, 47, said he bought a diesel Peugeot 5008 because he lives in Bedok and works in Tuas. "I clock at least 80km a day," he said. "I get 22.2km per litre with the 5008, compared to 16km for my previous car, a Toyota Wish." And since diesel is also cheaper at the pumps than petrol, Mr Yeo said "it's really worth it". The sums add up even for someone clocking a national average of 50km per day. A 1.6-litre petrol car would use around $4,000 of fuel a year, compared with $1,600 to $1,700 for a 1.6-litre diesel car. Both estimates are based on pump prices before discount. This fuel saving more than offsets the $763 premium in annual taxes the latter attracts, assuming it is a Euro 5 model. Retired pilot Leonard McCully, 71, however, was drawn to his Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI more for its performance. "With 650Nm of torque, it flies," he said. "In fact, when I drove it on the first day, my wife asked why I was driving so fast. "I've driven it to Phuket and it kept up with the (Porsche) 911s in the pack." Watch dealer Leslie Chang, 52, said even though his Mercedes-Benz C200 diesel attracts more than $4,000 in annual taxes (because it is Euro 4) and "is a little noisy when idling", he still enjoys it. He has done laps around Johor's Pasir Gudang race track, and the car performed well. Plus, it has a "feel- good factor" because of its low fuel consumption and carbon output. Nanyang Business School adjunct associate professor Zafar Momin said diesel cars are even gaining a foothold in the US, a predominantly petrol market. In Singapore, Mr Momin attributes diesel's meteoric rise to a host of economic reasons. But the biggest one, he said, was the power cap for Category A COE. "From a pricing standpoint, diesel models became much more attractive than the petrol versions that had been moved to Cat B," he said, adding that brands such as Volvo, Citroen, Peugeot and Renault "have clearly benefited".
  3. Court punishes Hewlett-Packard for under paying sales rep……. SINGAPORE — A retrenched sales product specialist with IT firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) is entitled to about S$600,000 in incentives for winning back a client, the High Court has ruled. In a judgment made public today (Aug 5), Judicial Commissioner Edmund Leow ruled that Ms Corinna Chin Shu Hwa had helped win back electronic payments provider NETS as a customer for the Singapore subsidiary of HP, and the contract fell within the definition of “new business” for HP. NETS was a HP customer but decided in late 2010 to buy IBM servers. The platform-migration process ran into problems and Ms Chin and her colleagues tried to woo NETS back in 2011 by, among other things, refusing to extend maintenance services for the existing servers unless NETS inked a new contract with HP. This put pressure on NETS’ planned migration to the IBM servers, and it eventually ordered new HP servers in a March 2012 contract worth about S$5.38 million. HP had argued that the NETS contract failed to meet the criteria for new business, and paid Ms Chin S$229,370.60 in incentives when it retrenched her in June 2012. JC Leow ruled that HP’s meaning of “new end user customer” – part of how sales specialists’ performances were assessed from November 2011 – was ambiguous. The justice of the case demands that the company bear the risk of this ambiguity, he added. “In terms of sales, NETS had been lost as a customer” when it decided to buy IBM servers in late 2010, the judge wrote. Although NETS’ platform migration was from existing HP servers to new HP ones, it was because NETS was won back as a customer before the migration process was complete, and was hence not a “technology refresh contract”, JC Leow noted. “Therefore, NETS was a ‘win back’ – i.e. a new end user customer – when it signed a contract for HP’s NonStop Blades servers in March 2012”, and was considered “new business”, he ruled. And as Ms Chin was involuntarily terminated in June 2012 before the end of HP’s financial year, the calculation of her incentive pay should be on a pro-rated basis rather than a full-year basis, JC Leow said. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/court-orders-hewlett-packard-pay-retrenched-sales-specialist-about-s627000 http://www.stjobs.sg/career-resources/money-matters/former-exec-sues-hp-for-more-than-600000/a/159351

    McDonald

McDonald’s Corp. said Chief Executive Don Thompson was leaving, less than three years into his tenure, and promoted a company veteran to try to revive the fast-food giant from its worst slump in more than a decade. Steve Easterbrook, 48 years old, who started with McDonald’s in 1993 and is currently chief global brand officer, will succeed Mr. Thompson on March 1, becoming the company’s third CEO in the past decade. McDonald’s gave no reason for the abrupt retirement of the 51-year-old Mr. Thompson but it comes after two years of worsening sales declines in its core U.S. market that have so far defied management’s remedies. Net income last year fell nearly 15%, to $4.76 billion, and McDonald’s stock has been basically flat since Mr. Thompson took over in July 2012—a period when the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 36%. McDonald’s shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading on Wednesday following the news, to $91.60. A spokeswoman said the retirement, announced after a regularly scheduled board meeting on Wednesday, was Mr. Thompson’s choice. In a statement, Mr. Thompson said Wednesday, “It’s tough to say goodbye to the McFamily, but there is a time and season for everything.” “Steve is a strong and experienced executive who successfully led our U.K. and European business units and the board is confident that he can effectively lead the company to improved financial and operational performance,” said Andrew McKenna, McDonald’s nonexecutive chairman, said in announcing the change. Left unclear for now is how Mr. Easterbrook will address the broad range of challenges McDonald’s faces. Its business is under attack from a host of smaller, more focused “fast casual” restaurants that are winning younger consumers with fresher and more customized offerings. These range from burrito chain Chipotle Mexican GrillInc. to upstarts like Shake Shack Inc., a boutique burger joint with 63 locations that is expected to raise up to $109 million in an initial public offering scheduled to price on Thursday. The Golden Arches also is wrestling with the effects of its own expansion over the years, with more than 14,350 locations in the U.S.—4.6 for every county in the country—and a menu that executives acknowledge has become so bloated with items that it has slowed service. Mr. Thompson’s team, including Mr. Easterbrook, has unveiled a host of proposed solutions in recent months. It announced last month plans to eliminate low-selling items from its menu, and to expand experiments with more customized offerings. That followed a restructuring of its U.S. operations designed to give regions more autonomy to offer locally tailored products. This month, McDonald’s launched a new marketing campaign in the U.S. with commercials and food packaging designed to refresh its longtime “I’m lovin’ it” slogan, under Chief Marketing Officer Deborah Wahl, who joined in March, and McDonald’s USA President Mike Andres, who took over in October. Still, McDonald’s said it expects January same-store sales to decline, after a 3.6% decline in global customer traffic last year, including a 4.1% drop in the U.S. “Don got fatally behind the last couple of years,” said John Gordon, restaurant consultant at Pacific Management Consulting Group. “And he hasn’t presented to the investment community that he’s moving quickly to solve these problems.” McDonald’s has a history of promoting within its ranks rather than recruiting outsiders, which comes with the risk that the changes won’t be substantial. But some investors and analysts think the potential to shake-up the business is still there with Mr. Easterbrook. “While Easterbrook is an insider, I think his expertise and focus on branding, media, and menu should give him credibility in the areas that McDonald’s is most needing change and improvement,” said Will Slabaugh, restaurant analyst at Stephens investment bank. Investor Bill Smead, CEO of Smead Capital Management, said that even though Mr. Easterbrook and Mr. Thompson have long been on the same management team, that doesn’t mean they have the same management style. “I think Don [Thompson] just wasn’t inspiring the franchisees or people around him in the way that they needed to be,” said Mr. Smead, whose firm owns about 168,000 shares of McDonald’s. Mr. Easterbrook has zig-zagged through McDonald’s corporate leadership roles, starting in London as a financial reporting manager in 1993. He climbed the ranks of its U.K. operations and in September 2010 was named the top brand officer. After just two months, he took over as the president of the European operations—then left McDonald’s less than a year after that. He then served stints as CEO of two British restaurant chains, PizzaExpress Ltd. and Wagamama Ltd., before returning to McDonald’s in June 2013 to head up global brand operations once again. Last March, McDonald’s broadened Mr. Easterbrook’s responsibilities to include oversight for corporate strategy and the restaurant solutions group as well as sustainability and philanthropy. Mr. Easterbrook has been vocal about McDonald’s need to make itself attractive again to “millennials,” often defined as the group born between 1980 and 2000, who are now in their mid-teens to mid-thirties. That age bracket once was a core demographic for the chain. Millennials “want to buy into a brand not just from it,” he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal last summer. “What we’ve got to do is find interesting and engaging ways to share that information with millennials, not old-fashioned corporate lecturing.” Also on Wednesday, McDonald’s appointed Google executive Margo Georgiadis to its board, representing a push to improve digital capabilities and connect with younger consumers. Mr. Thompson, McDonald’s first African-American CEO, took the helm after nearly a decade of prosperity led by Jim Skinner . Mr. Skinner became CEO in 2004, in the wake of McDonald’s last big business downturn. Mr. Skinner helped turn around McDonald’s U.S. operations, which had been suffering from overexpansion. Under his tenure, he slowed new-store openings and focused on improving the company’s operations. McDonald’s steered through the recession relatively unscathed, partly by rolling out coffee nationwide, which helped make the company one of the most successful restaurant chains at the time. By Mr. Thompson’s appointment as CEO in March 2012, McDonald’s stock price had nearly quadrupled since 2003 on strong revenue and profit gains.
  6. This Chinese company real extreme ....... Yahoo news: Sales execs who missed targets forced to kneel on public bridge and chant 'We are sorry' For most sales people, failing to beat their targets might mean a private dressing down from the boss or missing out on a bonus. But these shamed execs in China were publicly humiliated for missing their targets – by being forced to kneel on a bridge and chant how sorry they were. Pedestrians who were using a busy crossover in the city of Xiamen, the capital of south-eastern China’s Fujian Province, were stunned to see the men and women in suits on their knees with messages in front of them detailing their name, age, and exactly what it was that they had done to bring such shame on themselves. One, named as Zhen Liu, 43, had the handwritten message on the ground in front of him saying: "I failed to beat my sales targets." Another, Ming Chou, 39, had the message: "I have to kneel down on the bridge for one hour as punishment for not finishing my job." The images of the named and shamed employees went viral after they were uploaded by shocked passer-by Zhu Ku, 29. She said: "I saw people spread out across the bridge with their heads bowed, chanting they were sorry. "There was no indication what sort of company they worked for but it certainly doesn’t look like a fun one. "After a while one of them decided he’d had enough and stood up shouting and grabbing a piece of paper and throwing it on the ground before marching off. "But the others remained, calmly accepting their punishment." Internet users were unanimous in saying they would refuse to work for a firm that demanded such embarrassing apologies and many wanted to try and find out the name of the company in order to name and shame them for such bad treatment of staff. link: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/sales-execs-who-missed-targets-forced-to-kneel-on-public-bridge-and-chant--we-are-sorry-144915151.html

  10. The important of a business name..............koh lian sia............ A Belgian chocolate company is the latest casualty of an unfortunate name-association which saw it linked to a notorious terror group. By Brianna Roberts 7 NOV 2014 - 10:01 AM UPDATED YESTERDAY 3:42 PM 0 The makers of ISIS chocolates will change their name to ‘Libeert’ to avoid association with the terror group formerly known as ISIS. The director of the company, which has been around since 1923, Ignace Libeert, said they experienced a slump in sales as media coverage of the terror group's activity intensified. “When we saw that the orders, which were planned to get in at the beginning September for this Christmas, they didn't come in from the States or the UK, and we said: 'What's going on here?' “And they said yes, we have orders but the name ISIS is actually disturbing because our consumers are very upset with that name.” The chocolate company is the latest in a long list of companies to suffer from the unwanted association. The family of an 8-year-old Sydney girl called Isis came forward last month, complaining they had been discriminated against because of the association. And more than 38,000 Isis’s from across the world have signed an online petition to the media to stop using their name to describe the terror group. A British adult retailer apologised in August after launching a range of lingerie named Isis, but said it did not support jihadists in Iraq and Syria and was standing by its name. The word originally comes from an Egyptian goddess who was worshipped as an ideal mother and wife, and until recently has had mostly positive connotations. Chocolate bars bearing the name ISIS have already hit the shops for Christmas, so the company is now preparing for the Easter holidays. It will take until January 2015 for the full transition to the company's new name to be completed. http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/11/07/isis-chocolates-change-name-after-sales-slump

  12. Rennie Whang, My Paper, Tuesday, Sep 16, 2014 SINGAPORE - Sales of new homes were stagnant again last month, with developers selling 432 private homes. This was a 15 per cent drop from the 509 private condominium and apartment units moved in July. The number of new homes sold last month was 23 per cent more than the 351 homes that were launched, indicating that buyers went for units at projects launched earlier in the year. The top seller was The Panorama in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 2, which moved 40 units at a median price of $1,249 per square foot (psf). Other popular developments included Coco Palms at Pasir Ris Grove, with 23 units sold at a median price of $1,046 psf, and Eight Riversuites at Whampoa East, which sold 22 units at $1,345 psf. While there were no executive condominium (EC) launches last month, 58 EC units were sold. A major contributor was Waterwoods EC at Punggol Field Walk, which sold 28 units at a median price of $813 psf. After including the number of ECs sold, a total of 490 new private homes were sold last month, a 13 per cent drop from July. - See more at: http://business.asiaone.com/news/private-home-sales-drop-august#sthash.4n4kxehU.dpuf

  14. Hiscox, the global specialist insurance group, is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Whittington Group, the Singapore-headquartered insurance services and investment business, to acquire its direct-to-consumer online operation DirectAsia, subject to regulatory approval. Anthony Hobrow, CEO Whittington Group, said, “We have developed a successful entrepreneurial business, taking on the global giants with traditional distribution models. We are very pleased that we have been able to pass this unique platform to Hiscox who can supply expertise, capital and a strong customer focussed culture to help us further develop and grow the business.” DirectAsia was founded in Singapore in 2010 and launched into Hong Kong in 2012 and Thailand in 2013. Its primary business is automotive, one of the few non-discretionary insurances in Asia, with ancillary lines in travel, personal accident, healthcare and life. DirectAsia has a strong business model, operates in markets where agent based channels with high distribution costs predominate, and uses market leading rating mechanisms. It has over 54,000 customers, employs 140 people across the three locations in which it operates and in 2013 had gross written premiums of $25.3 million (S$32.2 million) Bronek Masojada, Hiscox CEO, commented, “DirectAsia is a challenger brand with real potential. It gives Hiscox a 21st century distribution platform in Asia that leapfrogs traditional routes to market. DirectAsia complements our direct-to-consumer businesses in Europe and the US, and in time, we will use it to distribute Hiscox products.” The business will continue to operate under the DirectAsia brand and existing local management team, which will be led by Steve Langan – Hiscox UK and Europe MD and now CEO of DirectAsia Group. Hiscox, headquartered in Bermuda, is an international specialist insurance group listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. DirectAsia will be Hiscox’s first business in Asia, and builds on its other direct-to-consumer operations in Europe and the U.S. DirectAsia is built on the same efficient and scalable IT platform that Hiscox U.K. is migrating to. It supports the insurer’s existing strategy to grow the retail lines of business and balance the more catastrophe exposed, internationally traded lines, where it expands and contracts according to market conditions. The acquisition has been approved by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and is subject to regulatory approval from the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) in Hong Kong. Other interested parties including the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the Prudential Regulatory Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority in the U.K., the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) in Thailand, and Lloyd’s of London have also been notified of the transaction.

  16. basically i will summarise as easily as possible. we agree to deal a vehicle at price $88k and i am the seller. the deposit was $1k by check and we sign an agreement with this specific clause: the deal will only go through if they secured insurance for the vehicle. otherwise, the deposit must be returned. now they want to back off from the deal and they ask me not to bank in the check. the reason they gave was that the insurance they were quoted were too high. i have not told them that i intend to keep the deposit. they will obviously state that they have the right to get back the deposit because they did not secure the insurance. but i feel that that term did not state clearly. it was quite obvious that when someone say cannot secure insurance, it it because nobody want to insure. now the problem is many people want to insure, just that they feel too expensive. i rejected an offer at $87k because they gave me this deposit. now i ask the second offer guy, he say he bought another car already. i feel very lugi le. what do you guys think? should i bank in the check tmr? of course, my guess is that they should have already canceled the check. but do i have a case if i go CASE?

  21. Ferrari will limit sales of its high-performance street cars this year to protect the brand's aura of exclusivity, chairman Luca Montezemolo said on Wednesday. Wealthy people around the world are snapping up Ferrari's and the company is worried the brand might lose its appeal as a symbol of rarefied luxury. As a result, it will scale back production to below 7,000 units this year, compared with 7,318 last year. "The exclusivity of Ferrari is fundamental for the value of our products," Mr Montezemolo told journalists at the company headquarters near Modena, in northern Italy. "We don't sell a normal product. We sell a dream." Ferrari sales were up 4 per cent in the first quarter, to 1,800 units. Montezemolo said he will provide a detailed outlook in the coming months but estimated the drop in unit sales this year will be greater than 1 per cent or 2 per cent.
