  4. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...igent_joke.html The 14-year-old teenager who drew flak from netizens for mocking Chinese New Year as a 'senseless' rehash of New Year's Day in a video says it was meant to be satirical and an 'intelligent joke'. The video was made by Zhonghua Secondary School student Amos Yee, who also stars in Jack Neo's latest movie, We Not Naughty. He had previously won Best Actor and Best Short Film in the FiRST Film Fest, organised by The New Paper. When contacted, Amos told My Paper that the video was meant to be satirical and was not meant to insult anyone. It was meant to be an intelligent joke, said the secondary two student. Amos also told The New Paper: "To all the haters, I am open to their criticism, I'm not a racist as some people have called me. I love feedback. I feel, humbly, that feedback is good. "The video is a joke executed well, but it attracted a lot of (unnecessary) hate. "Most of the people are commenting for the sake of commenting. They are also commenting from other people's comments. Have they seriously looked at the video from their own perspective? "I am Amos Yee. I don't care what people think. They can hate me for all they want. It shows that people are interested in me." Amos' mother also said her son's video clip was done in good fun. He had uploaded it with the intent of it being a 'comical greeting card'. She says Amos is a good boy in real life and enjoys all the traditions and customs of Chinese New Year and loves going visiting. Jack Neo also defended Amos, saying he is not to be blamed as generally, "most children these days have no idea of the origins of Chinese New Year." STOMPer FamousAmos who read the report shared her opinion: "First you insult until so jialat, then you come out and say it was a smart joke. "If you want to make smart jokes in your 'American accent' about your very own culture, then you can jolly well stop celebrating CNY and go elsewhere. "You are still quite young, but not too young to not understand the fundamentals of respect. Next time think properly before you speak." How ancient is the British metro? Does he know ours is a modern world-class land transportation system according to LTA? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_753580.html Disruptions quite normal for British metro and rail Published on Jan 10, 2012 AS A Briton on holiday in Singapore this New Year, I am amused by the brouhaha over the disruptions to the MRT system, which culminated in the resignation of SMRT chief executive officer Saw Phaik Hwa ('SMRT chief quits'; last Saturday). In Britain, disruptions to city metro systems and the national rail are as ubiquitous as char siew paus here. When travelling in London, it is quite normal for 'signalling problems' to mean that commuters have to find alternative transport, sometimes wasting hours of time. It is also quite normal for a train to another city to be cancelled at the last minute, wasting half a day, and disrupting schedules. I have to say to Singaporeans who enjoy the MRT system here: The MRT is brilliant; it is cheap, efficient, clean and smooth... I can go on. Given how wonderful it is, I think the occasional lapse in efficiency can be forgiven. Cut Ms Saw some slack, and be thankful you don't live in Britain! Dr Daniel Emlyn-Jones
  6. A major disruption in 24 years is understandable - and forgivable AS A Singaporean who has spent a good part of the past 10 years in Japan, and now in Spain, let me offer a different perspective to last week's train disruptions in Singapore ('Commuters delayed as Circle Line breaks down', last Thursday; 'MRT breakdown chaos', last Friday; 'PM orders inquiry as trains break down again', Sun-day) . Japan has one of the most efficient transport systems in the world, yet it is also prone to the occasional disruption, whether it is caused technically or for other reasons. In Barcelona where I live, the transport system is vulnerable to workers' strikes, which sometimes mean disrupted service for long periods. Yet in both places, the public react calmly and do not point fingers at their government in anger. By contrast, I read my friends in Singapore who rant online about operators, the Ministry of Transport and even the minister. This reflects a population pampered by an efficient society who have grown intolerant. A major breakdown in 24 years of operation is understandable - and forgivable. We can improve the current systems by revising ways of communication so commuters can be better informed in an emergency. For example, when a disruption occurs in the train network in Japan, information about the incident is immediately available on the website of the company, various news websites and a banner is displayed on Japanese tele-vision channels. This allows affected passengers to check the latest information online with their mobile phones, and lets them consider alternative routes before they travel. This will allow us to maintain our world-class transport reputation. Samson Guanglin Lee Barcelona, Spain

  8. Without saying up or down....just as good as cryptic talk. But I know when you keep increasing and stuffing something into a box, the box will be under pressure eventually. So if you keep stuffing money into your piggy bank..the money will be under pressure! So I take it that he meant that my income bank will be under pressure due to too much money! I like what he is saying! More Good Years!! Incomes will be under pressure soon: PM Lee Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Wednesday that the incomes of low-end and white-collar workers will be under pressure soon. PM Lee told CNBC in an interview that Singapore's economy is slowing down and will continue to do so going into 2012. This is due to global economic conditions getting tough. According to a Sept 1 economic report by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, economic activity in Singapore is likely to grow modestly in the second half of this year. Statistics provided by the Ministry of Trade and Industry showed that Singapore's economy grew by 1.3 per cent from July to September after contracting by 6.3 per cent in the previous quarter. This is on a seasonally-adjusted quarter-on-quarter annualised basis. PM Lee also told CNBC there will be uncertainties because the economic cycles are shorter. For the Singapore economy to continue growing at a strong pace, he said Singapore needed more workers, more skills and more talent. Mr Lee also spoke on the economic situation in Europe. When questioned by CNBC, he said the problem was deep and involved not just Greece but also other countries like Italy and Spain. "It's not just the immediate problems but there're also longer term structural questions about the Euro, and whether it will go forward or it'll go backwards. "They have to make sure that the problem does not spread beyond Greece and cause a run on Italy for example, which would have an implication for the whole world," he said.

S'pore cannot make do without foreign talent: Ex-MM Lee By S Ramesh | Posted: 22 July 2011 2107 hrs SINGAPORE: Former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said Singapore would not be able to punch above its own weight if it were to depend on talent from its own population. He was speaking at a dialogue to wrap up the two-day South Asian Diaspora convention in Singapore on Friday. Was he the one telling us to stop at 2? Now he says, based on the 3million population we have, cannot punch above our own weight. We have to accept the fact? Yes we do need foreign talent but not trash.
  12. how does one stop work for 60 secs? who would be able to tell the difference? seriously though....Qantas had so many problems recently that even if cheaper i also would not consider flying with them. ----- Qantas CEO says unions 'out of touch' Posted: 20 July 2011 1506 hrs A Qantas plane SYDNEY: Qantas chief Alan Joyce on Wednesday accused labour unions of standing in the way of change at the airline, as he signalled greater industry consolidation, with a focus on Asia, was the way forward. The Australian carrier, which is engaged in prolonged talks with pilots and engineers on contracts, will next month announce a strategic plan designed to revive its loss-making international business and expand its Asia markets. "We are now in negotiations with a number of unions," Joyce said. "But some union leaders are simply out of touch and trying to block our use of new business models." The chief executive said the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers' Association (ALAEA) needed to understand that new technologies required changed work practices. "But our maintenance and repair costs are among the least efficient and most expensive in the world," he said in a speech to the Australian Pacific Aviation Outlook Summit. "So it's time to catch up. We don't repair our cars the same way we did 40 years ago. We can't repair our planes the same way either. We can - and we will - be safer, smarter and more efficient." The ALAEA, whose members are due to stop work for 60 seconds on Friday as part of an ongoing dispute over wages and conditions, reacted furiously to Joyce's comments. "Right now I would like to direct all members to walk straight off the job and walk into Alan Joyce's office," union secretary Steve Purvinas said in an open letter on the union's website. "To tell him to stop destroying the business that was founded 90 years ago by two pilots and an engineer. To remind him that without Qantas International, he will not have any other associated businesses." But Purvinas called on engineers not to walk off the job, saying Joyce's comments were "clearly trying to incite us into doing something stupid". Qantas is also facing its first industrial action by pilots in 45 years as they demand a new clause in their contracts to stop the airline from potentially outsourcing pilots to cheaper bases in Asia. Joyce said the competitive challenges airlines faced made major change essential, including greater engagement in Asia, particularly China. Qantas' budget subsidiary Jetstar was already Asia's largest and fastest growing low-fare network and Joyce said management saw "continuing opportunities for the Jetstar model". Joyce said while Qantas was one of the world's top aviation companies, its success was "far from guaranteed". "We come from a relatively small home market, that is not a major global destination. We have no global hub ports. And we're not backed by government," Joyce said. "To secure our future, we must face up to the new global realities, seize new opportunities, and make the external and internal changes that will enable us to compete effectively." - AFP/fa
  13. From CNA news : S'pore jumps 3 spots to become 6th most expensive city in Asia SINGAPORE : Singapore has jumped three places this year to become the sixth most expensive city in Asia for expatriates to live in, according to the latest cost of living survey from ECA International. The company, which provides solutions for firms sending their staff overseas, said the continued strength of the Singapore dollar against major currencies had pushed the republic up the global ranking. ECA International also said prices of goods and services commonly purchased by international assignees have risen at much faster rates in Singapore than in other developed locations in the region. It said such goods and services now cost almost three per cent more in Singapore than in Hong Kong. Just a year ago, they cost five per cent more in Hong Kong than here. Singapore rose to the 36th spot from 68th in the global ranking in one year. ECA International pointed out that Singapore is now more expensive for international assignees than Hong Kong, New York, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Shanghai. ECA International said that although Japan is the only Asian country surveyed where the actual cost of goods in the ECA basket of goods has fallen, a strong currency and already higher costs for goods mean that the cost of living for assignees is significantly more than in other locations in the top ten ranking. Globally, Tokyo heads the top 10 list followed by Oslo, Nagoya, Stavanger in Norway, Yokohoma, Zurich, Angola's capital Luanda, Geneva, Kobe and the Swiss capital of Bern. The region's top 10 most expensive cities are: 1) Tokyo 2) Nagoya 3) Yokohama 4) Kobe 5) Seoul 6) Singapore 7) Hong Kong 8) Beijing 9) Shanghai 10) Busan - CNA/al So.......................why some paid millions per year still maintain SG cost of living it is 'affortable'
  14. Brudder, u got 5 years to fulfill yr promises. Pace yourself. NEWS May 9, 2011 Sitoh says he will not fail voters By Tan Hui Yee The People's Action Party's Sitoh Yih Pin, who wrested control of longtime opposition ward Potong Pasir from the Singapore People's Party on his third try, promised on Sunday that he 'will not fail' voters. The 47-year-old chairman of an accounting firm told reporters during his thank you parade on Sunday morning: 'Now that (voters) have given us this chance, we will treasure it. We will not fail them, we will fulfill all our promises in the five year plan that we have.' In his five-year plan, he had promised voters more carparks, a family service centre, and childcare and tuition centres. He defeated the SPP's Lina Chiam by just 114 votes, which makes up less than 1 percentage point in the ward with 17,327 voters. Mrs Chiam, a 62-year-old former nurse, is married to Mr Chiam See Tong, who was Potong Pasir's member of parliament for 27 years. Many residents remain loyal to Mr Chiam, who left Potong Pasir to contest in Bishan-Toa Payoh group representation constituency in this year's election. While many residents waved and walked up to Mr Sitoh to congratulate him, a few also shook his hand grudgingly or snubbed him altogether. Mr Sitoh said the emotional attachment to Mr Chiam was 'only natural'. He added: 'I'm sure he has tried his best in the last 27 years. Moving forward, I think we have to better understand the hearts and minds of residents here. Even though I have been here for 11 years, I think there's still a lot to learn, there is still a lot to do.'
  15. From Yahoo! News SINGAPORE : Outgoing Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zainul Abidin Rasheed, has said he will not accept the post of Speaker of Parliament, even if it were offered to him. Mr Zainul also thinks support among the Malay voters at the national level was affected by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's remarks on Malays and integration in his book "Hard Truths". This in turn affected the Malay support for the People's Action Party (PAP) at the polls. In a news conference on Thursday, Mr Zainul said: "I am a great believer in re-generation, so I would like to see more younger people coming forth to provide that leadership for that future and I hope to play an active role in helping and furthering that cause. "I will always be involved in community work. I can never say never in life and politics. But as you know given my age, I am not getting younger, I think it is unlikely (I will) stand in the next election. "We will see what the Party has to say, I also do not want to be presumptuous. I will continue to be the advisor to the grassroots organisations until the Party decides what is the way forward." Mr Zainul also felt that the Malay votes were not the reason for the decline in his support at the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) level. He said: "It was more the national issues. In particular, it could be a combination of issues like cost of living or how they see or saw government and also the role of the opposition, rather than Malay issues. "I had good vibes about the Malay community from the Malays whom I had met at Aljunied GRC, particularly in Eunos. But I cannot underestimate if there were sentiments of Malays who felt that the Malay-Muslim leaders are not doing enough." But he added that unhappiness over Minister Mentor Lee's comments in his latest book remains in the community. Mr Zainul said: "MM has already explained that those remarks were made two years ago and the timing of the publication came out earlier this year and in that sense, timing was bad for the GE (General Election). "But discussing such issues, there is no such thing as good timing or bad timing because it sometimes touches on the raw nerves. This is where we have to manage the way we discuss potentially-sensitive issues which could be divisive. "But this is not new. All over our history, we have been discussing very sensitive issues from National Service to tertiary fees to quotas in public housing, even in schools, and I think the Malay-Muslim community has grown to accept some of these issues which can be sensitive, but were discussed, some behind closed doors and some out in the public, and it is the combination of approaches we have taken that has brought about the community to face some of the issues squarely and then move forward." Before the General Election, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had hinted that Mr Zainul would be made the Speaker of Parliament once he gets elected. Although there are provisions in Singapore's Constitution for a non-elected Speaker of Parliament, Mr Zainul said he would not be accepting the post even if it is offered to him this time round. Mr Zainul said: "On the question of the Speaker, PM said that it will be contingent on my being elected as a Member of Parliament and PM has now said that since I am now not an elected member of Parliament, that question does not arise any more. "For myself, even if PM were to offer me as Speaker now, I personally will not accept. Having not been elected, it is not appropriate for me to be considered as Speaker of Parliament." Mr Zainul said he looks forward to spending more time with his family. But he will miss the weekly Meet-the-People sessions - where he has been seeing at least 60 cases each week - and his market visits to the Eunos division as its MP. Regards,

  18. MM: Aljunied GRC residents will regret choosing the WP By Leslie Koh VOTERS in Aljunied GRC who choose the Workers' Party (WP) team will regret it, said Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on Friday night. 'If they choose (the opposition), then I say, good luck to them. They have five years to ruminate and to regret what they did. And I have no doubts they will regret it,' he said. The People's Action Party (PAP) team there comprises Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Hwee Hua, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainul Abidin Rasheed - who has been identified as a potential Speaker of Parliament - Madam Cynthia Phua and new face Ong Ye Kung, an assistant secretary-general of NTUC who is touted as a potential office holder. They are facing a challenge by a high-profile team from the WP comprising former Hougang MP Low Thia Khiang, former NCMP Sylvia Lim, the party's 'star catch' Chen Show Mao, a corporate lawyer with top academic qualifications; as well as family counsellor Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap and post-graduate law student Pritam Singh. Speaking to reporters during a visit to Tampines, Mr Lee said the contest in Aljunied GRC could be boiled down to this issue: Do you want a capable team that can look after your interests, or do you want a team with little track record? 'At the end of the day, if you are in Aljunied, ask yourself: Do you want one MP, one Non-Constituency MP, one celebrity who has been away 30 years, and two unknowns to look after you?' Or, he continued, did voters prefer two ministers, one potential Parliament Secretary, one potential Speaker of Parliament, and one grassroots MP? 'Just ask yourself that,' he said http://www.straitstimes.com/GeneralElectio...ory_662848.html
