The decision by the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) has upset many of its 12,500 students, who called the rules draconian. 'I think (they) are unnecessary. We are studying at a private institution, not at a secondary school or polytechnic,' said final-year mass communications student Raaj Kumar, 18. With so many restriction, the younger generation feels WHY DO SCHOOL then but in our older generation we go school to get a good education so that our parents dont need to suffer our parents sacrifice alot to put us through school sometimes i wondered it is the students fault or the society or both

  3. I'm wondering what kind of effect will studying in elite schools make a person different (or not). Any opinion?
  4. I was enjoying my smooth and nice drive to work today. Monday 7July2008. Initially I thought the oil price and the new ERP gantries has finally got to many car drivers, and being a new week today may be the first day many tries out the public system. Went in office, was surprised that many colleagues are already in the office. Over the pantry, we talked about the smooth traffic. Then it dawned upon me that today is Youth day, its a school holiday. DUH! No wonder the road is 'empty'. So it seems that the conclusion that the morning jams on most roads are really caused by parents sending their childs to schools and on route to work!
  5. Anyone saw the ch8 program. that teacher cmi. teacher teach the wrong thing to student. wrong dance move and caught on natinal tv. hor say liao.

  7. So is Doreen also condemming all primary school teacher as not educated? I am waiting for primary school teachers to write in to complain about Doreen Chan taring all primary school teachers as not well educated! Don't tar all with same brush I ENJOYED the Saturday Special package of features on the real estate sales industry (April 19). But I was disappointed and dismayed by the statement by Dr Yu Shi Ming, head of the real estate department of the National University of Singapore (NUS), when he was quoted as saying: 'Every time people think of real estate agents, they think 'unscrupulous', 'untrained', 'unprofessional' and 'unethical'. My mother was upset and embarrassed after reading Dr Yu's hurtful remark and asked if I, a real estate agent, was also unscrupulous, untrained, unprofessional and unethical. I assured my mother I belong to the vast majority of real estate agents who abide by the core value of sales, including always trying to achieve the greatest savings for my customers and always ensuring that my customers will need to 'move house' only once when they relocate from one place to another. Such deals are often complicated and require agents to have good people skills, good coordination skills, an eye for the nitty-gritty, patience and a cool head. Most real estate agents, though poorly educated, will not say things without first thinking how the words we use will hurt the feelings of others, especially their parents. I may not be as highly educated, but I have learnt the virtue of not making sweeping generalisations against others from my primary school teacher - who, like me, was not as well educated. Doreen Chan (Ms) This letter was first published in The Straits Times on May 2, 2008.
  8. Something to highlight to those with kids especially those kids just started primary school. Are you aware that some kids actually extort monies from their friends? If you are not, please remember to ask them because sometimes as Father, we tend to not ask about such nitty stuff. If you are, can you share how you deal with it?

  11. I was travelling along yishun ave 1 around 2pm today, heading towards ave4. Suddenly a school van came from small road and intending to come out to the main road (ave1). He was some distance away. To my horror, he was so close to me and suppose to stop to wait for traffic to clear, before turning out to ave1....but he didn't. Almost had collision with him when he rushed out, i swerved from 3rd lane to 2nd lane - SO DID HE . Gave him a token of my horn, and i moved back to 3rd lane...so DID he . I think he Finally saw me..probably he could be a deaf driver, he swerve all the way to 1st lane and made a U-turn. This fellow is a chinese and tons of horn from other cars could be heard as he happily perform this crazy stunt. Folks just beware of this school van driver next time u travel along this area. He don't seems to care the kids he ferry. Cheerio
  12. Teenage gunman wounds four in Ohio high school A 14-year-old gunman opened fire at an Ohio high school Wednesday, wounding at least four people before killing himself in the latest school shooting to rock the United States. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson two students and two adults were wounded in the shooting at SuccessTech Academy. "The shooter is a 14-year-old student from the school. He has committed suicide," Jackson said at a press conference. A 17-year-old student who was shot in the elbow was expected to be released from hospital in the evening while a 14-year-old who was shot in the side will likely be held overnight for observation, he said. The two adults are in stable condition. Local media reported the student, who was described as a loner, was frustrated after being suspended from school for getting into a fight on Tuesday. He came to school early Wednesday and roamed through the hallways with a gun in each hand and shots were heard on two different floors. Screams and panic filled the building, witnesses said. Some students and teachers rushed outside at the sound of gunfire while others hid in closets and under desks while police searched the multilevel building for the shooter. "I know that dude was crazy. We just knew it. You know when people are crazy, come on, man," one student who fled at the sound of gunshots told CNN. "He was in my class ... He always wore a trench coat." The boy was described by other students as a loner and devil worshipper who had made jokes about shooting other students in front of teachers. "I didn't think he meant it," another unidentified student told news station WKYC. "I thought he just said it because he wanted to be popular." Frantic parents rushed to the school to get news of their children and many were told to wait until police had finished interviewing them. Several complained the school had recently denied requests to hire a security guard. Cleveland school district head Eugene Sanders said counselors were on hand to help students and administrators were working to reunite students with their parents. A decision had not yet been made on when classes would resume. It was just the latest in a spate of shootings over the past weeks. In September, two 17-year-old students were wounded when they were shot by a gunman at Delaware State University. On Tuesday, two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting at a workshop in Simi Valley, California, police said. That shooting took place at a tire assembly shop in the city of 120,000 some 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Los Angeles often listed among the country's safest communities. And on Sunday, a gun-toting sheriff's deputy went on a rampage, killing his ex-girlfriend and five other youths at a house party in a small town in Wisconsin, authorities said. The 20-year-old deputy and all those shot were all part of a close-knit group of friends, sources said. Wednesday's incident recalled the horrors eight years ago of the Columbine high school shooting in Colorado and a similar bloodbath at Virginia Tech earlier this year. During the massacre at Columbine High School massacre in April 1999, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, embarked on a shooting rampage, killing 12 students and a teacher, as well as wounding 24 others, before committing suicide. That shooting led to a period of introspection across the United States as the country briefly contemplated the downside of its celebrated "gun culture" but in the end, failed to pass laws or make other changes that would have made firearms less available. A similar reaction followed the shooting in April of this year of 32 people by mentally disturbed student Cho Seung-Hui at Virginia Tech University, who also turned his arm on himself. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported last month that more than 1.4 million murders, rapes, robberies and assaults were committed around the United States last year, or a violent crime every 22 seconds. The number of victims of violent crime in the United States last year was the equivalent of the entire population of European Union member Estonia or the African state of Gabon falling victim to murder, rape, robbery or assault. The rate of violent crime was up by 1.9 percent compared with 2005, with murders climbing by 1.8 percent to nearly 15,000 cases last year.
  13. Four Years Of School, A Lifetime Of Debt Sept. 9, 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (The Nation) This column was written by Barbara Ehrenreich. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to Fleece U., where our mission is to take feckless teenagers such as yourselves and turn them into full-fledged citizens of our economy, meaning, of course, debtors. Many life-changing things will happen to you in the next four years. You will make lasting friends, including perhaps the love of your life. You will drink more than you ever thought possible and bitterly regret it in the morning. You will lose your virginity, if you happen to have brought it with you. Our stellar faculty ardently hopes that along the way you will be amazed by calculus and charmed by the tipsy conversation between Alcibiades and that wily old radical, Socrates. There is also a general expectation that you will come out of here with some hazy notion of spelling and grammar. But never forget that your real purpose here is to shake off the pointless freedom of youth and assume the burden of debt. To this end, we have just raised our tuition in an attempt to keep up with such top-of-the-line institutions as George Washington University (now weighing in at $39,210 a year, or $50,000 with room and board.) You will find us also charging a plethora of additional fees - a "student activities fee," a "technology fee," and an "incidentals fee." In addition, we will be experimenting this year with a "snow removal fee," a "lecture hall seat-use fee," and the installation of pay toilets in the dorms. It would be short-sighted to resent these fees, since they provide valuable experience in bill-reading, and will come in handy when you confront your own personal monthly utility statements. At present we do not charge any additional tuition for this training in bill-reading, though we are considering adding a special "fee fee" in the future. Another thing that will help ease you into the status of debtor is the price of your textbooks - about $120 to $180 for a new, graffiti-free copy. True, this seems high when you could buy a hardcover of

  17. If u obeserve, there's always 3 arrows before a traffic light. Ever wonder what are these for? At times you may even see worker re-adjusting the position of these arrow. they are use especially when light is AMBER! Let me explain. ..............................................................................|| ....|| ............====>..................====>..............====>.......||....|| ..............1.........................2......................3............||.. ..|| .............................................................stop line (traffic junction) Direction of approach--> If Light is Amber and you are between arrow 3 and stop line, please proceed to pass. If Light is Amber and you are between arrow 2 & 3, please check yr rear view mirror and see if it is safe to brake and stop. If not speed up and pass. If light is Amber and you are between 1 & 2, DO brake and stop. Here if u still continue trying to pass (most likely Red light now) u risk the Red Light Camera (If any). Above are applied if you are travelling at the road speed limit. I been driving 15 years now and I stay to this rule. Especially helpful to new driver who are undecisive near road junction. May save yr 12 demerit point and make you a better driver. Do try and feedback.

  21. *start of rant it was safe to proceed and infront of me was a cefiro. behind me was a taxi, all 3 was proceeding, the cefiro took its time, and i maintain 1/2 car length to enter the gates. and all of a sudden, i got horned by the taxi driver for nothing in the middle of the turn while still maintaining 1/2 car length for some reasons unknown. i got really mad, was fuming and felt my blood boiling and as i straightened out. i stared at the bugger through the rear view mirror. wanted to point out to him at the cefiro in front, but was too fed up to do so. *end of rant looking back, it could have been an friendly/accident tap of the horn, but i doubt it
