  1. Six gas mileage myths http://green.yahoo.com/blog/daily_green_dr...eage-myths.html Some of the main points. For more, check out the complete list. Here are a few big myths: It takes more fuel to start a vehicle than it does to let it idle. People are really confused about this one and will leave a car idling for half an hour rather than turn it off and restart. Some kids I know started an anti-idling campaign in the suburbs and are shaming parents into shutting down their cars. Idling uses a quarter- to a half-gallon of fuel in an hour (costing you one to two cents a minute). Unless you're stalled in traffic, turn off the car when stopped for more a few minutes. Vehicles need to be warmed up before they're driven. Pshaw. That is a long-outdated notion. Today's cars are fine being driven off seconds after they're started. As a vehicle ages, its fuel economy decreases significantly. Not true. As long as it's maintained, a 10- or 15-year-old car should have like-new mileage. The key thing is maintenance -- an out-of-tune car will definitely start to decline mileage-wise. Replacing your air filter helps your car run efficiently. Another outdated claim, going back to the pre-1976 carburetor days. Modern fuel-injection engines don't get economy benefits from a clean air filter. After-market additives and devices can dramatically improve your fuel economy. As readers of my story on The Blade recall, there's not much evidence that these "miracle products" do much more than drain your wallet. Both the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Reports have weighed in on this. There are no top-secret 100-mpg add-ons out there. Using premium fuel improves fuel economy. You might as well write a check to BP if you believe this. Only use premium if your car specifies it. Cheers
  2. This afternoon at around 1.30pm after coming out from Clarke Quay MRT Station, I was going to cross the traffic light crossing at New Bridge Road (near to an ERP gantry and a bak kut teh shop) heading to Funan. As usual the green man light was on and I was crossing as usual. Then there is this silver P plate car driving at around 50 to 70km/hr towards the traffic crossing without any intention to slow down. As I am also a driver, my instinct told me to stop walking and stand on Lane 1, and true enough, within seconds this car whizzed pass me and beat the red light. I was quite stunned and angry, but too bad I did not note down the car plate number as it had driven too far off. Had I not have the habit of looking for oncoming traffic while crossing the road, or if I was talking on the phone, I might have been seriously injured or even died like the Romanian diplomat's case. So the real life lesson here is, we should not assume that cars will stop at red light. We should take charge of our own safety by looking for oncoming traffic all the time while crossing the road.
  3. Porsche plans to grow quite a bit between now and 2015, with a goal to hit 150,000 global sales. That's about twice the German sportscar maker's 2009 totals. That sounds like a very tall order to fill, but Detlev von Platen, CEO of Porsche Cars North America, reportedly told Automotive News that the task could be accomplished with the help of Volkswagen technology. Von Platen says that a decision on future technology synergies won't be made for another six months, and added that those decisions won't be announced until a much later date. Von Platen says, "It makes sense to think about some synergies in terms of research and development, and these discussions are taking place at the moment with VW." While we're sure that diehard Porsche fans will likely be less than pleased with the prospect of VW-infused Porsche products, the fact is that we've been living with just such an arrangement for some time. In fact, such such synergies have existed since the founding of the two companies, with the 914 (seen above) being the most well-known example of platform sharing. And, as you likely know, the Porsche Cayenne currently shares a basic platform with the more spartan Touareg, so the well-trodden path has already been laid for future sharing. Among the items that could be shared are fuel efficient powertrains and possibly even additional platforms. But a quick glance at VW's current stable of vehicles doesn't show too many (if any) platforms that would be suitable for Porschification. One vehicle that has been rumored at Porsche is a sub-Boxster ragtop that could help the automaker boost sales while also increasing the company's overall corporate fuel economy. A VW concept that could fit nicely is the adorable little BlueSport from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. That concept, which VW says will hit 57 miles per gallon on the Euro driving cycle, even featured a mid-engine layout; a staple of the Boxster and Cayman. [source: Automotive News]
  4. Hi Forumers Bro, I'm looking for ODC owners who are able to share your in poisoning your beloved assets. 7. I am really pissed with the SG insurance companies. Every year rates increase and I really have no idea how they arrive at the premiums. I suspect that insurance companies lure motorist into their trap....especially for new car owners. (new meaning either brand new or bought a new used car) When you buy a new car, the premium is usually very manageable, however, when it comes to renewal...that is where you get whack upside down. Cos the insurance company knows that you are trapped. (I believe only a small percentage would buy their cars outright and most would take loan...it depends on the tenure of the loan period) You would have to buy insurance cos its a necessity in order for you to drive on the road. So whatever price they quote, you can either swallow it or try your luck somewhere else (which is usually hopeless) Take me for example.... When I bought my car, the premium was only 1.7k (for a WRX is quite ok...cos I standby to be around 2K). Then when it comes to renewal with 50% NCB....it jump to 2.4K.....now tis year....its 3.5K !! A friend who drives a 1.3A Fit....1.8K last year with 20% NCB...this year with 30% NCB....2.6K !! Civic Type R, a owner was complaining that his premium shot up 300% !! (no claims history)....when he bought the car...the premium was 1.2K thereabout...now its 3K+ and not a lot of company wish to take. Honda Stream, When the owner bought it....600 bucks was his premium (50%) and now this year....with no claim history....he is paying 1.2K (which is like 100% increase) Is it possible that we group up and sign a petition to our dear government and ask them to do something about it. This cannot be right...a essential product for the motorist and it keeps going up everytime the insurance company says they are making a lost...WTF !! Another grouse....insurance company can never tell you how they derive at the premium...you ask them they tell you they have their method but its trade secret. PUI.... Anyone got a good suggestion on how to curb this tsunami ?
  8. Just thought it good to share with those who are thinking of which primary school to go - neighbourhood or better ones. After attended a P2 parents' orientation programme, what left most impression is the speech from the principle. He received a call from press when PSLE released - how come your school top school only got 281, not within the top few after national best of 289? Answer given was that we must learn to look beyond top scorers statistics. In any school, there are different categories of students from gifted to very slack in their studies. We cannot judge a school based on how many top scorers it has, but more important are the rest of the students cohort - how do their fare in the PSLE? The statistic tells the complete story, although sadly it is not available to main-stream people. Ths school achieve 100% pass in that all student can go to secondary schools. This is not something to trumpet about, as 1 or 2 bad apples will reduce it to less than perfect. What matters is that 89.1% of them are eligible for Special/Express stream, compare to 60% for national average! And all go to better secondary schools to boot! The principle even showed slides to indicate how many go to which school. Really impressive. So it could be that some neighbourhood schools could have some top scorers, which is not that difficult given the current influx of FT students from China. But what about the rest of the cohorts taking the PSLE? I am not trying to be elitist or yayah, just to share my thoughts on this. Thks for reading.

  18. Hi bros, Just something to share with you guys, so please dun flame me. Was driving along Orchard Road 2 weeks back and was at the Centrepoint area (before the taxi stand). I was heading for the Centrepoint carpark and there was a jam in the lane next to the bus lane. It was only about 300m leading to the side road to the carpark and I was late for my appointment so I took a risk and ventured into the empty bus lane (red lane). 100 metres down the road, I saw a white ant with a camera hiding within the crowd. OMG! My first thought was to cut back in but I knew it was too late as it was obvious the ant had seen me. So guess what? I dropped gear and picked up speed and zoomed towards and past the ant. Think I caught the ant off guard and he swung around to catch a pic of my rear end. Seeing his reaction, I continued to accelerate into the distance. To date, no summon and keeping my fingers crossed.
  19. First of all, i have nothing against cats. Want to know what do people who have stray cats in their neighborhood prevent them from using your car as Dunlop. I've tried lifting the wipers after I park, obstacle for them to climb up frm bonnet. My car is hatchback, so difficult for them to mount the roof from the rear. This does not work though.
  20. Enjoy guys haha best gifs of the day... good prank
  21. I am not drunk thats what friends are for Enjoy and great day ahead

Others please comment too, just share share. How do you rate it? Do you think there is a better car for less money? Why? Driving an Integra now. Backside itchy, thinking of changing. Thanks a lot.
