  1. Hi all, Thesedays, my aircon sometimes blow out warm air when engine is idling, but it will be ok when the car is moving. I suspect that the condenser fan is not running well. My question is, how often does this fan cuts-in and run? When I first on my air-con (while car is stationary), I realise that this fan doesn't run. Then it suddenly comes alive (together with another fan (radiator fan?) next to it) maybe 5 minutes later. Then after running for like 3 minutes, it will stop again....and won't come back on again until like 10 minutes later. How to check if this fan is performing as it should?

  3. A woman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who was seriously injured in a car crash in 1991 has finally woken up from a 27-year-long coma. Munira Abdulla, then 32, had just picked up her 4-year-old son Omar from school when the car they were in collided with a school bus, reported local daily the National on Monday (Apr 22). While Omar was unharmed, Ms Abdulla, who had tried to protect her son from the impact, was left unconscious with a serious brain injury. Last year, Ms Abdulla, now 60, regained consciousness in a hospital room in Germany. “I never gave up on her because I always had a feeling that one day she will wake up,” said her 32-year-old son Omar Webair in an interview with the National. Ms Abdulla, who was taken to a local hospital after the accident, was later transferred to one in London where doctors diagnosed her to be in a minimally conscious state. She was then returned to the UAE where she was transferred several times due to insurance constraints. In 2017, Ms Abdulla was finally taken to a German hospital after the Crown Prince Court heard the family's story and gave them a grant. There, Ms Abdulla underwent surgery to treat her weakened limb muscles as well as physical therapy. Last June, Ms Abdulla was seen stirring in her bed when an argument broke out in her hospital room. “She was making strange sounds and I kept calling the doctors to examine her,” Mr Webair told the National. “They said everything was normal. “Then, three days later, I woke up to the sound of someone calling my name. “It was her. She was calling my name. I was flying with joy. For years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said.” Ms Abdulla is now receiving treatment in Abu Dhabi, where she is able to communicate “in a very reasonable manner”, said the hospital. “I shared her story to tell people not to lose hope on their loved ones,” Mr Webair said. “Don’t consider them dead when they are in such a state. “All those years, the doctors told me she was a hopeless case and that there was no point of the treatment I was seeking for her, but whenever in doubt I put myself in her place and did whatever I could to improve her condition.” Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/uae-woman-wakes-up-from-27-year-coma-after-car-crash-report-11472950 Miracle story to kick start this morning. In Singapore, this may not even be remotely possible no thanks to expensive healthcare bills. How comprehensive or rather how limited is our life insurance for coma patients? How many of us can afford to keep our loved ones alive for so long, with or without hopes of them even waking up? Then there are other deciding factors... What are the moral implications to deciding when to pull the plug for a coma patient whom is showing minimal signs of consciousness, on life support etc? Who is going to decide quality of life vs quantity of life? When is the right time to pull the plug? Is there ever a right time? Do insurance companies put pressure on hospitals or even doctors? This is a miracle case. It has given hope to families out there to keep the faith and not give up on their loved ones. But food for thought, how many of us would have been able to do the same? At 60 years old, she still has many good years to catch up on lost time with her family.
  4. For discussion. In many countries in Europe it's already banned. At least it should not be legal to post videos freely on social media, except for traffic accident legal proceedings. But here, everyday we see so many nonsense videos posted on social media, number plates, faces and all, for the most trivial stuff. Shaming each other, CSI and turning people's life upside down, making them jobless etc etc, has become like an entertainment for so many in SG. Like they say, sinkie pwn sinkie, can sleep well tonight! Austria Status: Banned Using a dash cam in Austria is illegal, full-stop. First-time offenders will be slapped with a whopping €10,000 fine, with repeat offenders fined €25,000. In fact, it’s not even legal to own a dash cam. Be sure to leave yours behind if you’re planning to head there on your trip. Belgium Status: Legal, with conditions Belgium is a lot more relaxed than Austria on the issue. You can both own and use one, but only for ‘private use’. What that means to drivers is that if you’re involved in an incident you’ll need to inform all other parties before submitting the footage as evidence. France Status: Legal, with conditions French dash cam laws are largely similar to those in the UK, in that there are rules on where dash cams can be placed within the vehicle: it cannot obstruct the driver’s view. Like its smaller neighbour Belgium, France also restricts dash cams to ‘private use’ – in this case, that means that you can’t upload the footage to the internet. If you record any evidence, make sure that it goes directly to the police. Germany Status: Legal, with conditions Germany may be famed for its delimited ‘autobahn’ that lets motorists largely speed at will, but it has still seen fit to place some restrictions on dash cam usage. Like France and the UK, it must be placed so as not to obstruct the driver’s view. In compliance with the country’s strict privacy laws, any footage shared publicly must have faces and number plates obscured (in fact, ideally they should not be recorded at all). Luxembourg Status: Banned Head south from Belgium, and the rules don’t change all that much. While at least owning a dash cam is allowed in Luxembourg, using one is still totally illegal. Make sure it stays in the glovebox for the duration of your time there. Norway Status: Legal, with conditions Norway is probably the mainland European nation with rules most similar to the UK’s. Its only regulation on dash cams is that it’s installed out of the way of the driver’s view. Portugal Status: Banned It may be totally legal to use a dash cam on your drive through Spain to get there, but once you arrive in Portugal it is neither legal to own nor use a dash cam, so leave yours at home if you’ll be driving there. Switzerland Status: Legal, but heavily conditional Saving the most complex for last, dash cam usage is a very muddy area in Switzerland. While they’re legal in theory, it’s all but impossible to get any use out of them while still obeying strict Swiss data protection laws. For a start, they can never just be used for entertainment or documenting a journey – there has to be a legal purpose to recording. Then they must conform to the Swiss ‘principal of transparency’: it needs to be obvious that those being recorded are being recorded. As dash cams are discreet by nature, and other drivers are usually only aware of their existence after an accident occurs, that’s a box likely to remain unticked.
  5. Should cyclists be banned/fined on the road given that the Park Connector is just beside the road? So many millions have been spent on Park Connectors to bring safety to cyclists and yet some still cycle on the road.
  6. I was at a service outlet ( not to be mentioned ) and while leisurely sipping my coffee, the mechanic walks to a man beside me and told him he should perform engine flush because his mileage is time for him to do engine flushing. So the man asked for the price of engine flushing and then verbally agree to let the mechanic proceed with the additional work done. Before I can finish my coffee, the mechanic walks back to the man again. He then mentioned that the spark plug not so good. He suggest change all since doing engine flushing. The man ask for the price again. The man realise it is a bit expensive so he is a little rejecting the offer. The mechanic immediately assure the man not to worry as he will ask the shop boss for discount. Came back shortly and say the management agree to give discount on the spark plugs for $xx amount. Hearing that there is discounted price, the man agrees again. OK I don't wish to stereotype people out here, but the car is just beside you, you should stand up, demand to see the condition of the spark plug, judge for yourself if it is rightful to change. However all this while, that man's butt was stuck to the seat. He never took a blink of an eye to look at his car, nor ask for more detail opinion. He readily accepts. Engine flushing, whether it is legit or snake oil, you should also judge. But looking at the man's reaction from the proposal, he seems to be nullified of his knowledge of cars, even basic servicing. He would listen to what the mechanics says. His only concern is price. That is no way you should even offer your car to a service outlet or workshop to take your hard earned money. Sometimes ignorant is bliss. But when comes to ignorance of basic car care, it is blitz.
  7. Bus lanes should be abolished from 5pm to 8pm. Reasons 1) It jammed up the other lanes as we are forced to drive with one fewer lane. 2) The bus lanes are under utilized by buses anyway. Or at least allow some other vehicles like vans carrying goods or trucks to drive on bus lanes. 3) Due to different work nature and conditions now, there are people who finish work at 1pm to 4pm. There are also many people who ends work late: 8pm to midnight so bus lanes from 5pm to 8pm is kind of redundant now.
  8. Hello all, My current ride is a Mitsubishi attrage which is bought in Aug 2015 when cat A COE is $57,500 It is paid in full. So far, the car works well for A to B travel. Will it be a good time now to scrap the car to take advantage of the current lower COE? Currently looking at the Nissan Note or looking at another attrage again. Any suggestions? Thank you, Sthh

  12. Crystal Coat: Why you should Coat instead of Wax? Paint protection systems (PPS) such as ceramic coating/glass coating are becoming increasing popular with users due to various reasons. Time Saving Better Protective properties than Wax Achieve a high standard of gloss 1.Time Saving With the traditional method of applying wax, there are multiple steps involved. Firstly, your car has to be washed with a car shampoo and dried completely. Next, a thin layer of compound or paste wax must be applied on the paintwork. After which, wait for the wax to harden before buffing off. However, with a PPS coat, you do not need to wait before buffing off which saves a huge amount of time and effort in detailing your car. 2. Better Protective Properties than Wax Another difference of Coat Vs Wax will be the level of protection that it provides. While wax may have a higher gloss unit especially if a high quality wax is used, it only gives the car a deep shine without protecting the paintwork against water marks, UV rays or Acid Rain. Also, PPS when applied frequently, causes the coat to multiply, thus extending its longevity. 3. Achieve a high standard of gloss For the effort to result ratio, there can be no doubt that using a coating will result in a more than satisfactory result in gloss for your car, furthermore, the ease of maintenance means that simple stains can be remove by just using water! This is because the layer of coat protects the stains from penetrating the core layer of the paintwork. Why spend hundreds of dollars on Paint Protection Systems (PPS) when you can DIY yourself at a fraction of the cost? Try Bullsone Crystal Coat today at 25% off your first bottle! 13. Installed a full set of lowering springs from Storm. Progressive springs, red and made in Korea specifically matched to your Hyundai / Kia models My first day of field report for the Storm Progressive Lowering Spring , here goes. Compared to coil overs, these are not adjustable for dampening nor height. Installation is a breeze as it only requires removal of stock shocks/ spring and replacing the stock springs with the Storm. Practically no alignment is necessary since your camber ( for most passenger cars ) are no adjustable. Castor for almost all car models are also fixed, so no alignment is possible. Toe in shouldn't be affected since toe tie rods will not be loosen or touched during installation. On the road, the ride is surprisingly soft. Compared to coilovers, these progressives have a almost close to stock first few CM of compression which soaks up the roughness of the road. However during cornering, the progressives nature would feel harder and harder as your corner hits more corner speed. Hence it doesn't feel like you are going to roll over feeling like in a stock. The lowered look, which has always been my cup of tea for almost all my cars except one, gives a farily equal gap all around the tyres and fenders. Over humps, no issue since it only lowers 3.5 cm front and 3 cm rear. Compared to my coilovers which was lowered to the max, didn't had problem going over humps either. So verdict.. if you are looking at lowering, progressive is way to go. Linear springs are just too harsh, base on my experience.

  15. I think I am old school, but I feel that the parents should take this as an opportunity to cut the hair of the child. Not sure if there is such a thing as pre-school humiliation, can't really remember much of what happened at pre-school. To be honest, his hair is really long and unkempt. I wouldn't like it if my child has a pre-school classmate with this kind of hair. There may be better options but I for sure do not want the teacher to be so restricted when attempting to teach life lessons for children. It's more likely the parents rather than the child felt humiliated. What do you think? http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/pre-school-teacher-in-hair-clip-saga-to-remain-at-centre Pre-school teacher in hair clip saga to remain at centre A back view of the six-year-old involved in the incident. His teacher found his hair too long and clipped it with a girl's hair clip. The incident came to light after another teacher noticed his "abnormal and despondent" behaviour, his father said in a Facebook post.PHOTO: COURTESY OF MADAM SWEE Nicole Weers Malavika Menon A pre-school teacher who put a girl's hair clip on a six-year-old boy in front of his classmates will continue to teach at Zoo-phonics School's Serangoon Central branch. This follows an internal investigation into the matter that blew up after the boy's father posted about the incident publicly on Facebook, sparking a debate on ways to discipline children. In a five-page letter to parents yesterday, the school said: "The management believes that Teacher Theresa is deemed fit to continue teaching at Zoo-phonics School (Serangoon)." The boy's mother, who wanted to be known only as Madam Swee, 35, said she and her husband are now deciding on whether their son should continue to attend classes at the centre. school.jpg Related Story Pre-school teacher suspended after parent complains about 'humiliating' punishment The incident took place on July 5 and the boy's father, Mr Eric Cheong, 37, shared it on Facebook on July 9. The post has since been shared more than 2,000 times. Mr Cheong said his son had been humiliated. Following the incident, Ms Theresa was temporarily suspended while investigations were carried out, according to Zoo-phonics director Vincent Teoh. After viewing closed-circuit television footage, the school said yesterday that the teacher had summoned the boy, borrowed a hair clip from a female pupil and put it on him. Turning him to face the class, she then spoke about how much neater he looked. The school said the child had worn the clip for only 50 seconds, and that his parents had blown the matter up. After consulting other parents, it said it found that most wanted the teacher to stay, with only some parents in the boy's class seeking a change in teacher. Zoo-phonics acknowledged that "some parents regarded her teaching methods as "old school", and said the teacher had been counselled. However, Madam Swee remains upset. "Humiliation for one second, two seconds or 50 seconds is still a humiliation which caused everyone he knows and sees daily to laugh at him," she said.
  16. Hi, need some advice and your rationale to see if I got my sum right. I bought my Aug 2007 Stream in Jan 2012 for $55K. The OMV is $20,500+ and I understand I can get back around $11,300 if I ride it out till the end. So, at that point, I was thinking my depreciation is around $7,300 per year. That is OK for a 1.8 litre car that sits 7 people. With today COE dropping and hopefully it will goes further south, it seems that should I replace it, I will enjoy a better depreciation and enjoy a new car. Of course I may not be getting back a 7 seater and 1.8 litre Honda. If I go for a $85K normal saloon car (Kia, Mazda, etc) and trade in my present car. This is my calculation. Value of new car $85,000 Trade in current car $20,000 ( $11, 300 + $9K for the balance 1.5 year is very reasonable or I should get more) $55,000 For the new car, if I ride out the 10 years, I am sure I should at least get back $5K. So, if I depreciate the $50K over 10 years, my depreciation for each year is $5K. Did I get this sum right? On top of the above, for the balance 1.5 years, my depreciation of $7,300 is reduced to $5K per year, a saving of another $2.3K or more. Of course now I got to see what $85K I can buy. Any views or advice? Thank you
  17. I have been experiencing a loud Wong Wong sound when I'm driving at 60-70. Sound goes away after 70 and will come on at 100-120 and after 120,it will be silent. I don't think it is a bearing issue as my car is not shaking or vibrating. I heard that a bearing sound is more of a grinding sound instead of Wong Wong. I'm riding on michellin ps3 that has done about 30-40k with about 40% threads left. My car will be scrapping in 2017 July so will not want to spend so much on new tires. If I need to change tyres, can you guys advise me a reliable and not too expensive set? Thanks in advance!
  18. By Dinesh Dayani | DollarsAndSense.sg Singaporeans are affluent and busy people. Many times, we end up either not having time to check through our bills or just trusting that everything is in order. The matter of the fact is that service providers, existing for the sole purpose of profiting usually, will always be incentivised to work in fees into their packages to ensure they extract the maximum value from a customer. Checking our bills every month may be hasslesome, but it take a few short minutes. Further, the accumulation of fees adds up to a substantial amount if gone unchecked for long periods. Here are four types of common fees that every Singaporean will face at some point of their life. 1. Credit Card FeesCredit cards have been created to keep people in debt and spend more than we can. Without doing so, credit card companies will never be successful. So working in additional fees and creating “better” features will only ever serve to keep you in debt. With that being said, here are some credit card fees to watch out for i. Annual FeesCredit card companies charge annual fees to ensure anyone not keeping tabs on their spending will automatically lose reward points or actually pay it as part of their monthly payment to the company. ii. Late Payment FeesThey also have strange ways to compute which day you have to repay your bill by. It’s never the same so be sure to look at the due date and pay your bills before then. Interest charges are scary at over 24% and this does not even include the late payment charge. iii. Delayed Payment FeesMany credit cards offer its customers the option of only having to pay $50 or a certain percentage of their bill each month. What customers do not know is that fees have been built into this method of payment either through preferred interest rates (which are still scary) or a processing fee which is charged as a percentage of the amount. These fees are also applicable when you transfer balances from another card. 2. Banking FeesThe lines are a bit blurred when I mention banking fees since most banks also offer credit cards. But we’ll stick to pure banking fees here. So in addition to the fees they collect on credit cards, banks also profit through these other fees.Minimum Amount Fees i. Minimum Amount FeesMany banks require you to keep a minimum balance, usually $500, in your account each month. Failing to do so will activate a fee of approximately $2. However, this is for savings accounts, note that there are also minimum fees for current accounts that require much higher fees and much higher minimum balances. As a side note, some current accounts also charge fees for their cheque books. ii. Short Term Borrowing FeesAdvertised as a quick and easy way to get instant cash, often within a few hours of application. Fees for such are very prevalent and are in addition to the interest rates charged. 3. Early Termination FeesOnce a company has tied you down to a contract, you can be sure they will fight tooth and nail to make you pay for it. Even when we experience the shameful Singtel TV outage, we had to continue paying for the service. And their discount was given on goodwill rather than an obligation. We’ll leave the debate on how fair this system is, and how big companies can bully consumers without the government intervening. And when the government intervenes, you’ll know that the situation has really been atrocious. i. InsuranceInsurance companies are another financial institution that exists only to profit. They profit by offering consumers insurance, this is not a public service they are doing, they are profiting, and if they don’t do it, someone else will. Of course then, once you sign a contract, usually for the next quarter of a decade, you’re pretty much locked with them. At this point, it should be highlighted that we think you should think hard about any decision regarding insurance when you sign up. It will affect you for a very very long time. ii. TelcosAs mentioned in the opening paragraph, you can’t back out even when you’re being offered a terrible deal. You’ve signed up for it. This is far more acceptable, or so people think, because it only locks you up for 2 years at a go. Nevertheless, you should consider your decision carefully before signing up. There are always other options, like not watching TV and being more productive and using pre-paid cards. iii. MortgagesAnother way banks can earn money from customers. The logic is that banks have already “locked in” a certain amount of interest income that you will pay them, and if you want to back out, you have to cough up for it. This is actually the most fair of the fees they charge. Nevertheless, it’s an additional fee for us to consider when determining how fast or slow we can pay back our mortgages. iv. Almost Anything ElseSame logic applies. When you sign up for a deal, you’re going to be held ransom to that signature. Think before signing for any service. Some common ones are gym membership. 4. Convenience/ Booking FeesThis type of fees is cringe-worthy, mostly because it’s term “convenience” when most consumers are being inconvenienced. i. Movie ticketsThere are ways booking fees when booking tickets online or through mobile apps. Golden Village ($2), Filmgarde ($1) and Cathay ($1.50) all have these fees. ii. Budget AirlinesUsually ranging from $16 to $20, these fees put additional revenue in budget airlines’ pockets for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Some, like Jetstar, offer free payment options via Singpost or 7-11 outlets. We say, why not reward the airlines that offer better deals for their customers. Help them make up for it with greater revenues. They deserve it. iii. Many Other ServicesWe can list down everything under the sun, but the basic premise is that service providers will try to take more money, every possible way, this includes services offering you convenient methods to top up your EZ link card via mobile apps or with credit cards (under $1). In Summary You will have to decide for yourself what fees are acceptable and what fees are not. If you ask us, we will try to cut out all the fees, as the additional headache will be rewarded in the form of huge savings over our lifetimes. Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call, and other times, we have to be a little more firm. Regardless, we think everyone can adjust their lifestyles to not have to pay these kinds of fees. https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/4-types-fees-singaporeans-not-003015173.html
  19. Hi, I test drove a lot of cars at the start, but now I think I have shortlisted down to 2 cars. So I want to test drive them again and compare between the two. Should I look for the same SEs who helped me the first time, or just any SE at the showroom? I'm just concerned that if I look for the same SE, they will take it a serious sign of interest and disturb me with phone calls, etc. What do you guys do for 2nd test drive?
  20. http://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/motoring/should-i-buy-a-new-car-now Everyone's favourite motoring journalist is back with another article. Looks like his COE is ending in 3 weeks, he may be fighting with you guys for a COE on 23 December! Don't know why he complaining about COE prices when he is thinking of buying an Audi Q7 which is going for $300k. And then he debates between a brand new Wish for 10k/year depreciation, or renewing COE for 8k/year depreciation. That's "merely" 20k over 10 years, might as well get a new Wish.
