  1. Dear drivers, I have been seeing more and more videos appearing online shaming road bullies and inconsiderate road users. If one fine day you saw your face or car appearing online flashing across the major forums, who would you continue your life here? Imagine that your family, relatives and colleagues see your behavior fully exposed? By saying this, do you try to spot for car camera when you are enraged by the other parties behavior before you give him a piece of your mind?
  2. LTA should not fine SMRT because that will lead to reduced revenue and increased fares. LTA should ask SMRT to cut the SMRT senior management PAY by 50%. This is better as it gives more money to SMRT and will not lead to increased fares for commuters. Starting from the CEO from DFS!!!!
  3. Yep thanks to this fare "revision", our doc here is now determined to get a car ASAP because of "unreliable" cab service... If more folks are using this excuse than we just have to be contented with our little red dot being a giant car park during peak hours... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_742416.html REVISION IN TAXI FARES Service should improve before charges are increased Published on Dec 8, 2011 LET me cite my experience last week to illustrate the unjustified cab fare revisions initiated by ComfortDelGro without a preceding improvement in service standards ('Other taxi firms set to revise fares too'; yesterday). Last Saturday, I tried to book a MaxiCab for five (four adults and a baby with a car seat) from ComfortDelGro. It took 10 dropped calls and an hour to finally get an answer. Having secured the first MaxiCab, we tried to book a return one, for which we were assured by ComfortDelGro that we would get an SMS confirmation. We were very willing to pay the required advance booking fee of $16. We received the SMS for the first cab immediately, but it took three hours to receive a rejection for the second. By then, we were in a rush to get to the airport as two people in our group had to catch their flight to Canada. So we decided to book two normal cabs instead. However, we managed to secure only one after about half an hour of trying (via the iPhone app and calling) and received no reply on the second. We even tried flagging ComfortDelGro cabs - to no avail. The experience left us anxious and irritated. We were highly inconvenienced by the shoddy and unprofessional service. Our Canadian guests could not understand why it was so difficult to book a taxi, whereas everything else seemed to work well in Singapore. The fare revision makes no sense in the light of such poor service. Cab operators should improve service or keep the fares low. We understand that Singapore has more taxis than many other major cities, but the service is much poorer. Now, we are even more determined to buy a car as soon as possible because we cannot continue being plagued by unreliable service. Dr Karthik Kumar
  4. So far the Malaysian Chinese I encounter do not seem to be handicapped by not being able to speak English and I mean those I meet in the construction industry. They are however more comfortable communicating with us in Mandarin though. Maybe the warden feels that way too? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_738992.html Parking wardens should know some English Published on Nov 29, 2011 ON SUNDAY, I tried to strike up a conversation in English with a Cisco parking warden on duty at the junction of Telok Kurau Road and East Coast Road. He did not respond as he could not understand English. He then spoke in Mandarin and said he was from Malaysia. Maids are required to learn and pass English tests before employment. Shouldn't parking wardens on public duty understand basic conversational English? Ang Chin Guan
  5. Hi! I just bought a 2nd hand Proton satria neo that has around 95K on the meter. Do you think I should change the timing belt and water pump right now or wait till its on the 100K mark? Thanks.
  6. I'm currently on 185/50/16, driving a latest generation Honda City. Thinking of changing to 205/45/16 for better handling and lower braking distance. (READ: Improve safety) My manual only indicates up to 195 but how does one know whether their rims are able to support 205 width? For the tyres I'm thinking around $150 to $180 each. I'm leaning towards performance but not those hardcore super noisy kind of performance tyres. Any recommendations on what tyres should I get ?
  7. Why let the hotel earn more when most of the time the trio are out shopping / sight-seeing and spend less than 8 hours in the room?
  8. i will hit my next servicing interval within next week, but my friends and i are going on a roadtrip to KL next weekend previously i've bought 5w30 engine oil for my next servicing, have always been using w40 and heard that w30 will offer less protection for my engine so now i'm wondering, my bf will be doing most of the driving and he usually does speeds of around 200km/h the 5w30 engine oil will not offer as much protection as my 5w40 currently but if i don't change my oil, i'll be adding another 2k km soon which will make 1200km since my last servicing should i send the car for servicing first? or should i just do it after the roadtrip? which is safer? i've read online that people are track racing using w20 oil even, so i'm not sure if its bad for my engine or not i'm driving an 06 integra with around 100k done, always been using w40 oil

  15. 'Foreign workers should get training too', says MP Yeo Guat Kwang Published on Sep 19, 2011 By Lin Wenjian Foreign workers should get skills upgrading similar to what Singaporeans go through, suggested labour MP Yeo Guat Kwang. Noting that this would 'create a level playing field' for all workers, he said training and certification for work permit and S Pass holders should be done within the first two years of their employment. Successful certification should then be used as a condition for work pass renewal, he said. Mr Yeo, speaking to The Straits Times in his capacity as chairman of the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), said training could be done in two ways - either through in-house courses conducted by employers, or via the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) programme. --------------- Alamak, where else can you find a country like Singapore? Help foreigners find work, and help unskilled foreigners to upgrade (most of whom will leave in 2-3 years), and at whose expense?
  16. Hi bros and sisters, I'm thinking of buying a new car which costs about 100k. Should I pay full or take loan since the interest rates are so low now. I think this is a common situation which sometimes gets difficult to decide. Any views? Many thanks for your ideas. I hope other forum users will find your views helpful when deciding also.
  17. http://johnharding.com/why-gas-should-be-a-a-buck-a-gallon/ = Price of gas $0.91 in Saudi Arabia, $0.78 in Kuwait, $1.74 in Puerto Rico (part of the USA). So how can that be? It costs less than a dollar to produce a barrel of oil in Saudi Arabia

  22. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_697331.html Mindef should spell out NS deferment criteria DR PATRICK Tan's deferment of his national service (NS) for 12 years ('Patrick Tan on his medical studies'; last Saturday) brings to mind the stories of many other talented Singaporeans who were not allowed to defer their NS. Some are talented musicians, sportsmen or artists who have qualified for prestigious schools or have trained hard enough to don national colours for competitions. The Ministry of Defence's (Mindef) stock reply is that national servicemen are granted deferment only in rare and exceptional cases. After reading Dr Tan's clarification, I cannot help but ask what the thus far unspecified criteria are that would allow for discretionary deferment. Dr Tan's case suggests to me that budding musicians, artists or sportsmen are deemed less important than future doctors or scientists. If Singapore is to be vibrant and enriching, talented citizens in any field should be supported. What are the necessary conditions for deferment? Mindef's transparency will set the record straight and help in future appeals. Lim Guay Cheng (Ms)
  23. I drive an 8 year old silver gs300. Mileage about 107k. No loan from day 1. So far, no problems because it is serviced regularly every 10k and parts were changed as suggested by mechanics. Should I use my car till 10 years old? I am sure with the high current COE values, I am not the only one driving a 6-8year old car. There will be more and more older cars on the road nowadays. Any views from my trusted bros and sisters?
