  1. Ever wondered if this will affect our tiny country of 500,000 cars population? Ever since the credits allowed easy borrowing, 100% loans, etc etc..... A lot of ppl who just scrape their monthly salary are buying cars and breathing jus above the waters. I noe of at least 9 of my colleagues/frens/relatives who did that. Say salary S$1500.00, spends S$800 on instalments and 200 on fuel. Left 500, so scrimp and save on every thing possible. So if sudden recession, wun we see the crippling effect? What say u?

  9. Source: http://vroom.quape.com/index.php?option=co...&id=73&Itemid=9 Written by djXpire Monday, 03 September 2007 Recently, it has come to our attention that there is a major flaw on all driving center's booking system for Practical Driving Tests... A student from Singapore Safety Driving Center is currently exploiting this flaw on all the booking systems for Traffic Police Practical Tests and trying to make a profit out of it. He made this software to monitor all the cancelled practical test dates and auto-book those dates immediately for people who paid him service fees. He had also used his self created software to auto-book his own test dates and successfully gotten his license within 3 Months which is deemed cheating. Below are the gathered relevant information: He is known as wangxf100 in Hardwarezone forums. HWZ Private Messages where he pmed another user named: shirron Read more for further details & more screenshots available... Click here for where he registered and solicit his business to the users in Flowerpod.com.sg. It showed that he is indeed capable of booking those cancelled practical test dates. Although he had already cancelled his blog site @ http://wangxf100.spaces.live.com/blog/Acce...space=wangxf100 (broken link now) But I am still able to retrieve cached data from the the windows live space server. The useful links where he advertise about his services: 1. http://cc.msnscache.com/cache.aspx?q=83349...en-SG&FORM=CVRE 2. http://cc.msnscache.com/cache.aspx?q=83349...n-SG&FORM=CVRE2 The two above links are still workable now but I do not know how long will the cached data will stay on their server. I just made more screenshots in order to provide concrete evidence about his exploitations. Refer to the slide show above for the printcreens just in case the cached links dont work anymore... An email had been sent to notify all the driving centers about this major flaw & exploit, I will update further when there are responses from the respective driving centers....

  13. Middle-age suicide rate up: report By Lee U-Wen, TODAY | Posted: 29 August 2007 1001 hrs SINGAPORE: The figures point to a worrying trend - more men in their 40s and women in their 50s have committed suicide since 2003. In that year, there were 14 suicides for every 100,000 men in their 40s, according to government figures released yesterday. This increased to 19 per 100,000 last year. For women, there were eight suicides per 100,000 of those in their 50s in 2003. The figure rose to 13 per 100,000 last year. According to earlier media reports, 419 people took their lives last year, up from 346 in 2003. Still, Singapore's overall suicide rate for those between 45 and 54 years old is lower than that of places such as Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland, said Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. Nonetheless, the rates reflected a "worrying trend" as each suicide was a "tragic loss" for both the family and community, he said in a written reply to a question posed by Hougang MP Low Thia Khiang. Dr Balakrishnan also revealed that an Inter-Ministry Working Group on Mental Health, chaired by Ministry of Health permanent secretary Yong Ying-I, had been formed to study ways to improve the mental and emotional resilience of Singaporeans. "I don't find the rates for those in their 40s and 50s surprising," said Dr Ang Yong Guan, chairman of the Action Group for Mental Illness. "What's paradoxical is the correlation that when the economy does well, the suicide rates go up." He added: "It could be because people start seeing those around them becoming more successful, so they start to feel affected. This is unlike a recession, where everyone does not do well." Dr Balakrishnan also noted that each suicide case "is unique" and often accompanied by a combination of problems. "Contributing factors such as personality traits, mental health and socio-cultural environment may also play a role." To mark Suicide Awareness Week, which is held between Sept 22 and 29, the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) is organising two forums that will address issues like how to help someone with suicidal tendencies. SOS' latest annual report said that more women attempted suicide than men. Chinese women, married and between 20 and 30 years old, appeared to be the most vulnerable. Marital and family relationship problems were the main reasons. Meanwhile, the Government will pump more resources into mental health promotion and treatment. The Health Promotion Board, with other public agencies and the private sector, is expanding such programmes, said Dr Balakrishnan. - TODAY/ym -----------

  15. In 1999, I used to attend a car maintenance/repair course conducted in a community center in Changi area. The course instructor was a seventy year old man and I think his name was Mr William Wong (or Mr. William Wan). He drove a 1984 Honda Accord then. Is there any similar course which touches on deeper technical details, in Singapore? Would be interested to attend.

  21. Singapore's first public CNG station to be ready by Jan 2008 By Daryl Loo, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 July 2007 2008 hrs SINGAPORE: Singapore's first-ever publicly-accessible refuelling station for compressed natural gas (CNG) is expected to start running by next January. CNG is seen as a cleaner and cheaper alternative to petrol as it produces very little pollutants and costs about 50% less. The station will be built and operated by Smart Automobile, which also runs Singapore's first and largest fleet of CNG taxis. Smart Automobile expects to charge about 75 cents per litre for CNG, much cheaper than petrol, which costs from $1.60 per litre. The new CNG refuelling station will sit on a 55,000-square-foot site on Mandai Road, just off the Woodlands Road junction. Smart Automobile has obtained a 30-year lease to build the station, which will serve all CNG-fuelled vehicles here. The company hopes to have four more stations by 2011, including one in Serangoon North - to be up and running by next September. Smart Automobile says it is still awaiting regulatory approval for the second station. All its CNG stations will operate under the name Smart Energy. Johnny Harjantho, Managing Director of Smart Automobile, said: "We project that by the time the five CNG stations are up, there will be about 3,000 to 4,000 CNG taxis of our own, and from the public side - commercial and private cars - we estimate that there are going to be about 10,000 cars available on the road. "If you ask me: is that number exaggerated? I think it is not. It's a chicken and egg situation. If you build more stations, then we believe more people will convert their cars, or buy the OEM CNG cars in Singapore." There are 400 CNG vehicles on the road here, and these currently need special permission to refuel at Singapore's sole CNG station on Jurong Island. Once the Mandai station is ready, however, refuelling on Jurong Island will no longer be allowed. Smart Automobile estimates that the first station will cost $8 million to build, and subsequent stations about $7 million each. To take advantage of the lower cost of refuelling, Smart Automobile intends to replace its remaining fleet of 550 diesel-run taxis with CNG cabs over the next four years. Mr Harjantho said: "Currently, we have about 110 CNG taxis, which is about 10-15% of our entire fleet. But going forward, we are going to change all of our taxis to run on CNG. "Green environment is the 'in' thing. Everyone's talking about being environmentally-friendly. So why not run a CNG fleet. The cost is cheaper, and also it does not pollute so much. The whole world is going in that direction." Other countries with CNG stations include Australia, China and South Korea. - CNA/ir
