  1. Just today, we learned that Skoda delivered a record number of vehicles in the first nine months of 2010, increasing its operating profit by a whopping 64%. This is what most people know about the Czech automaker; that it has been a wild success since Volkswagen took over the reins of the company. But there are others -myself included- who think the real glory of Skoda lies in its past. When the Germans arrived in 1990 (this time with more peaceful intentions), Skoda really needed a strong partner if it wanted to stay afloat. The first fruit of their "love" was the updated Favorit, stamped with a "VW System" badge. That meant it had received fuel injection, instead of a carburetor, and a slightly updated interior. It was better than the original Favorit, launched in 1987, but still a long way from being a good car. A decade later, the firm's range includes cars like the Fabia, Octavia and Superb. Skoda's modern day success is anything but a coincidence. The Czechs worked diligently under German supervision. And today they build cars that some consider being better than Volkswagens. Talk about a student surpassing his master

  8. The VW Group's new 1.6 TDI turbo diesel is making its way to the options list of the European market Skoda Superb saloon and Estate models, where it will replace the 1.9 TDI. While the smaller displacement 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel unit produces the same output figures as the 1.9 TDI with 105-horsepower and 250Nm of torque, it promises to offer improved diesel mileage and lower CO2 emissions. More specifically, the combined fuel consumption has been improved to 6.2lt/100km for the saloon and 6.3lt/100km for the Estate, while emissions have been reduced by 19g/km and 20g/km respectively. I have not heard of the new 1.6 TDI powering any VW models yet but its application on the Golf and Jetta would be welcomed.
  9. VW is cheaper than Skoda.... VW Polo 1.2TSI@S$83,900 Skoda Fabia 1.2TSI@S$85,800 VW Golf 1.2TSI@S$95,900 Skoda Yeti 1.2TSI@S$108,800 VW Golf 1.4TSI@S$98,900 Skoda Octavia Combi 1.4TSI@S$102,800 VW Passat CC 1.8TSI@S$133,300 (limited units) Skoda Superb 1.8TSI Ambition@S$133,800 Skoda Superb 1.8TSI Elegance@S$141,800 VW Jetta 1.4TSI@S$94,900 Skoda Octavia 1.4TSI@S$99,800 (*another S$1,000 off VW models should you take an in-house loan) " Managing director of Harvest Automobiles, Daniel Au, acknowledged the premium price tag, saying, "The Yeti is really something that has to be seen and experienced. Since the launch, we've had lots of customers come down, it's really pulling the crowd and we've taken a few orders already." Au is bullish on the brand's revival in Singapore, saying "We're going to try to put as many cars on the road as possible, now that we've got a full range of cars to sell. All of us are really motivated, the pricing is attractive, the models are great and we've got lots of support from the principals. "

  22. Okay, this ain't some really special secret place, but it's our own place where we can bitch about anything and everything and keep to ourselves. Only folks we have met several times and feel we can trust are invited to this place. To keep this place our own, please keep it's existance to yourself. This has to be strongly enforced as I don't want every Skoda owner to waltz in to the forum demanding access to this area and getting all our sensitve posts, contacts... basically, information.... and leaking them out to who knows what and where. Wouldn't it be nice to know you can come in here and do anything you want un-moderated? (but still moderated by C708 and me ) I've sent out sms to all who have access to this place, please do not be offended by the sms as I'm not pin pointing anyone for anything at all. Here comes the Yeti!

Don't worry, the mythological creature from the Himalayan region is not making an appearance in Singapore. Rather, the Yei is Skoda's first off-roader, combining the strength of a 4x4 with the practicality of a family hatchback. At 4.2 metres, the Yeti is virtually the same length as the Roomster MPV. It
  24. VW Jetta's distance cousin, the Octavia, has received new engine and transmission options for 2010. In particular, both the liftback and estate versions are now offered with a new, downsized 1.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TSI gasoline engine with direct-injection. This is the same powerplant that is expected to be fitted to the VW Polo later this year. The 1.2-liter TSI produces 105 horsepower and can be matted to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG dual clutch transmission. However, expect Singapore's version (if Harvest Automobiles decides to bring it in) to be offered only with the DSG version. The new engine propels the hatch from 0 to 100km/h in 10.8 seconds (Estate: 10.9 seconds) while returning a combined fuel economy of 5.7 lt/100km. The performance figure sounds decent and it seems to hate visits to petrol station too. This is a good opportunity for Harvest Automobile to once again promote the Octavia brandname among local buyers. Remove the HID lamps, headlamp washers, electric front seats, Alcantara seat (locally fitted leather will do) and pit it against the Corolla Altis in terms of pricing. I am sure we can see more Octavias zipping around if Harvest do the right thing.
