  1. Is this true? If so, can test my car's speed limit at night. Enter at night via 2nd link, travel some distance to clear carbon exhaust, then top up tank and head back to S'pore.
  2. the 2nd day after i told my car back from workshop, i went out for drinks with a friend. while i was heading home in one of the LDP highway in petaling jaya, there was a gen 2 and Camry over take me like a flash. me and my friend was thinking whether follow them or chase them, is about 5 to 600 meters away from us... started to chase them, but Camry went home after the 800 meters. so, chase the gen2, is not easy, (my car km/h meter is not functioning) i over take him at 6000 rpm and around 0.8 bar of boost... is a hard time to get him near. Suspect the gen 2 is driving around 180km/h more and less. is really fast.....
  3. Anyone knows what is the economical speed for Aveo ? Some say keeping below 80 is the best. Others mentioned that 90 is the economical speed and at 110 the car consumes 15% more fuel then at 90km/h. Anyone has any comments ?
  4. Would like to know if the pick up speed will be affected if I upgraded from 13" to 15". Currently using Synergy 2000 and vortex gold [from JB]. Will using Syn5000/8000 be better in terms of power/pick up? Tried my friend JAZZ and can feel the push at 1500 RPM. Can't feel half the push when driving an AVEO at ard 2000 to 2500 rpm.

  6. Hi Guys, I am helping my good friend to find out more about this model selling new at $109K (OMV $31K)......., hope you guys may know a thing or two about this plain looking model. We saw it at the PI showroom today, it looks like a Corolla G9 but it's a five door hatchback with body kit and the PI claims that it has about 220ps with TRD tuned 1800cc engine. Anyone knows about this model and it's 0-100 sprint time?? For the price, what other similar models can my friend consider? He's looking for something fast, but low-key looking. Many thanks
  7. It was reported that sometime back that the speed limit on the NS Hwy will be raised to 120kmh. But it hit a snag as, apparently, those political clowns haven't gotten approval for it from the cabinet. (speed limit muz get cabinet approval one meh??...). Can anyone who has driven up lately confirm if the speed limit signs hv been changed to 120kmh?
  8. Hi All, Any idea which workshops can remove the JDM Speed Limiter of 180Km/h for a Lexus ES300 parallel import unit?
  9. Hi, my friend called me last night and as usual, our conversation was filled with automotive related matters... He was telling me his sister's Astina had inconsistent idling speed and he was unable to explain it. Neither can I, so i'm seeking help from the brothers and sisters here... He mentioned that the inconsistency happens only when the air-con is on. No mods have been made to the Astina. Thanks in advance for any answers! =) eddie
  10. Hi bros, Newly joined...wonderful site with fun-talking souls and techical gurus.. I am interested in improving some pickup speed for my ride..wonder what's the best method to do it. Does installing CAI help or is there other solutions?
  11. Hi brothers, any one can help me with this problem i'm facing??? My new Lancer pick-up speed is really slow. I have to ramp the accelerator at traffic light or at right/left filter lane... (for both 1st and 2nd gear) is it advisable to change the gear ratio? or the spark plug?? any advice??
  12. Hi , Firstly, i really nice to have a technical resources where all the techincal stuff are being discuss and post here.. well done all bros here.. i need some help and maybe some of you here might here :p i used to have a excel file that calculates the rev and speed by entering the gear ratio, final drive, tyre size etc... and it will give you the rev and speed .. anyone here got the file to share ??? tks !!
  13. extracted from TOVA's Honda City review (asia.vtec.net/article/2003City2/index.html: For the driving enthusiasts, the 7-speed mode is the key to overcoming whatever shortcomings the operating characteristic of the CVT program has. Again, I find that best results are obtained via a combination of S-mode and 7-speed mode. For acceleration from a stand-still for e.g., I found that the best technique is to get into 7-speed mode (from S-mode). Then press the downshift button once. This moves the 7-speed mode from an auto to a manual shift option. And at standstill, the CVT will be in 1st gear. Now floor the throttle and the CVT behaves exactly like a regular gearbox with a very high geared 1st gear. The car accelerates at a good pace - maximum drive is available at the front wheels since the gear ratio is fixed. We need to observe the tacho carefully now because we want to get the CVT out of 7 speed mode just immediately before the CVT shifts into 2nd gear. This will be around 5500-5800rpm. So once engine revs hits 5500rpm, press the 7-speed button to switch back into S-mode. We need to press when the tacho needle reaches 5500rpm because of possible delay in reflexes. If we try to switch at 5800rpm, it may be too late and the CVT would probably have switched to 2nd gear. But if we time it just nicely, the engine revs stays at around 5800rpm for as long as we keep the throttle at WOT. This immediately places the CVT at the highest possible gear ratio for the speed the car is now travelling at and thus ensures maximum acceleration. So, from standstill, getting into 1st gear allows us to get to max engine revs as fast as we can without going through the stage where we are accelerating but the CVT is slipping the gears at the same time. And once at max revs, we will have max acceleration for as long as we want. This is the key to the City's max acceleration from standstill. When I use this method, I find I was easily able to pull ahead of the general traffic at the toll-gates and traffic lights. The same technique can be used to good effect for extracting maximum acceleration from a 'rolling start'. For example, when I later needed to overtake another car in the same trunk road as above, what I did was I switched to S-mode and then into 7-speed mode. Next I downshift to the lowest possible gear ratio. The 'idiot-proof' designed into the CVT 7-speed mode is very useful here as I just have to keep pressing the downshift button until the CVT won't downshift anymore because any further downshifting will over-rev the engine. Thus when this is done, the CVT gearbox would be running at the lowest possible gear for the car's speed and thus the highest possible fixed gear ratio. Now I cut out to overtake the car and floored the throttle. Maximum drive is transmitted to the front wheels since the gear ratio is fixed. There is no interference from slipping gear ratios. Engine revs climbs to 5500rpm and I switch back to S-mode again (this means we have to keep an eye on the tacho and the road as well so do this with extra care !). With engine revs at max (~5800rpm), we now have maximum acceleration. With this technique, overtaking was done much more effectively and without any drama. Certainly I did not over-commit at any of the overtaking manuevres I did when using this technique.
  14. Hi all expert .. need some opinion on the gear ratio of the Stream 2.0 iVTEC 5 speed autobox. The car cruise at about 2200rpm at 100km/h. According to the graph, does that mean that the Stream can "theoritically" hit 200km/h at below 4500rpm and 250km/h at a mere 5500rpm ??!! Of coz, the above if there is no speed limiter lah ! BTW, the speedo stops at 190km/h (last marking is 180km/h and one more unmarked line)
  15. Whats the formula to calculate vehicle speed with gear ratio and final drive? Lets say 1st gear is 3.245, final gear is 4.675, RPM at 5000, wheel diameter is 20". What will be the speed in km/h?
  16. Hi guys here are some pics taken at the recent race event.... do feel free to add your pics.. thanks
  17. Here's the outrageous STG245,000 TVR Speed 12 Prototype with its 800 bhp V12, capable of 0-60mph/0-100kmph in 2.5 secs, with a top speed of over 240 mph...
  18. Mercedes 7-Speed Automatic Transmission One and a half year ago, ZF introduced the world's first 6-speed automatic in BMW 7-series. Soon, Jaguar S-Type, XJ and Audi A8 also adopted the ZF transmission. Not Mercedes, because Mercedes is the only car maker in the world building its own automatic transmission (GM and Ford builds via their subsidiary, while other European car makers simply out-source from transmission makers). Mercedes used to be proud of its smooth 5-speed automatic, which is fitted to almost all its models from C-class to SL-class. However, being short of 1 gear, it is bettered by the ZF unit in acceleration, smoothness as well as fuel consumption. This will be changed from this Autumn, when Mercedes start producing a new generation 7-speed automatic transmission, called 7G-Tronic, to replace the old 5-speeder. Initially, it will be used by the V8 models only, such as E500, S430 / 500, CL500 and SL500. With 7 ratios, expect it will take the lead again in the competition with ZF. More ratios means two benefits: 1) smoother shifting and acceleration because the ratios are closer from each other; 2) better fuel economy because of larger ratio spread between the lowest and highest gear. In the best cases, fuel consumption can be reduced by 0.6 litre / 100km while 0-60mph time is cut by 0.3 seconds. The 7-speeder is barely any longer and heavier than the old 5-speeder, thanks to clever packaging and magnesium casing.
  19. I think is unusual cos it never happened b4. Recently, the air con gives a fluttering sound at speed 4. Is that normal after some usage? It doesnt have this sound at other speeds.....I'm driving a G9 btw.....
  20. It happens just few hours ago at orchard. A 3dr ESi crash into a tree outside westwood. It crashes into half *2pieces* Driver die on the spot while his gf is sent to hospital.. (GF very very bad injurys) Was considering whether wanna post or not.. but decided to post.. to remind all bros out there. Xmas is comin' so take care please. Think twice before you speed. Rdgs, Dennis.
  21. Here's S60T5R, Yttrium and YSFOO (AKA Super 7) and me... after a race!
  22. Paris car show. Scarly mate. I think only this driver will be the first one speeding
  23. Hi, Need some help from the brudders here wrt the above. Just changed my tyres and while doing rotation found that 2 of my rims are bent (can see it wobbling while on the machine). According to the guys there this will cause some vibration during driving and braking. True enuff i feel it. So that means I need to repair the rims and do high speed balancing. Any good place to do both? Recommendations will be appreciated. BTW, the uncle recommended to repair at $60 per rim and leave it there for 2-3 days. Is this reasonable?
  24. Hi, I just bought a fren's wheels(n tires). However, there are some vibrations at low speed. The vibrations are characterised by a wobbly feel of the car at low speed (10-20km/h), kinda like a bit bumpy, but not so obvious at cruising or high speeds. Can any gurus or car freaks provide some insight as to what I should do to remedy the situation? I have gone for high speed balancing at Stamford and the wheels are also balanced. Thanks,
