  2. HELP ME!! HELP ME!! Wheres my PAPA? Wed, Feb 04, 2009 The New Paper How did car end up at this spot? HER sports car crashed through a concrete barrier by the side of the road and went hurtling down a slope for 300 metres. But, fortunately, the 22-year-old female driver, whose name is not known, was unhurt in the accident. This happened last Saturday night at 10.35pm near Blk 413A Fernvale Link in Sengkang. The woman's Volkswagen Eos was badly damaged with the front bumper crumpled, and motor parts strewn all over the ground. The driver, who appeared dazed, told Shin Min Daily News that as she was turning, a taxi had swung by too close to her vehicle. In a moment of panic, she had hit the accelerator instead of the brake . She was later seen frantically making calls on her handphone. The young woman looked shaken as she spoke on her mobile phone and sobbed at intervals. Her friends later arrived and helped her call for a tow truck.

  5. S'pore Q3 GDP contracts 0.5%, 2008 seen at 3% SINGAPORE - The economy shrank by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter of this year from the same period a year ago, resulting in the Ministry of Trade and Industry lowering its expectation on full year growth to 3 per cent. MTI made the announcement when it revealed the advance estimates for the quarter ending September on Friday. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter annualised basis, real gross domestic product (GDP) dropped by 6.3 per cent in the third quarter after contracting 5.7 per cent in the previous quarter. With two consecutive quarters shrinking, economists say Singapore is now in a technical recession, the first in six years. The Ministry last revised downwards the GDP in August to 4.0-5.0 per cent, with growth expected to come in at the lower end of the range. Explaining the latest revision on the outlook for this year, MTI said, 'The worsening financial crisis in the US in recent weeks has deepened the credit crunch, making it more difficult for businesses to sustain economic activities.' 'With unemployment on the rise and house prices continuing to fall, US consumer sentiment has weakened further and will affect demand for exports from Asia and the rest of the world. Singapore's export-oriented sectors, such as manufacturing, will be affected.' Sectors The manufacturing sector continued to be weighted down by the negative growth in biomedical sciences, as pharmaceutical companies are still producing a mix of pharmaceutical ingredients with values lower than compared to a year ago. The precision engineering and chemical clusters also slowed, because of weaker external demand. The construction sector grew by 7.8 per cent in the third quarter, compared to the 18.3 per cent growth in the first half of 2008. 'Despite a strong pipeline of construction projects, a shortage of contractors, a tight labour market for engineers and project managers, and longer waiting times for equipment, have delayed the realisation of these projects.' MTI added in a press release that the financial services sector was likely to see slower growth in the coming months as the ongoing global financial crisis has heightened uncertainties for sentiment-sensitive segments such as stocks trading and fund management activities. The Republic's last technical recession was in 2002. -- BT ONLINE

  8. Finance Ministry says 3/4 tank rule for cars going into M'sia to stay By Imelda Saad, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 June 2008 1947 hrs Photos 1 of 1 Cars wait in line to refill their fuel tanks at a gas station in Kuala Lumpur before the price hike SINGAPORE: Malaysia has long been a popular destination for Singaporean motorists seeking to take advantage of the lower ringgit and heavily subsidised petrol. So the recent fuel price hike in Malaysia has prompted some Singaporean motorists to call for the lifting of the three-quarter tank rule imposed on Singapore vehicles crossing into Malaysia. The ruling, which has been in place since 1991, requires all north-bound motorists to leave Singapore with petrol tanks at least three-quarters full. Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, Singapore's Finance Ministry said authorities are monitoring the situation. But at this point, the ministry said there are no plans to review the three-quarter tank rule. It added the rule is part of Singapore's policy to moderate vehicle usage and reduce traffic congestion. Still motorists Channel NewsAsia spoke with said there's not much to be saved given that petrol prices in Malaysia have gone up by more than 40 per cent. Many want the Singapore government to do away with the three-quarter tank rule completely, citing escalating local fuel prices. One motorist said: "At the end of the day motorists should have a choice. As it is we are paying very high car prices, very high road tax, COE and ERP so why not? Give us an option to save money." - CNA/vm

  14. Everyone knows that you only live once right. And that seeing how expensive it is to own & maintain a car in S'pore, do you:- 1) opt to be practical & drive it till end of it's lifespan 2) change car every few yrs 3) go for the one car that will inspire you to drive till end of it's lifespan I will share my experiences. For me, 1st car was a COE car & it was sold it away as the maintenance costs was very high due to regular changing of parts every 3mths. 2nd car was a used car & we sold it away as no use for it anymore. 3rd car is a new car & coming next yr would be 3yrs old. Will probably be practical & install wallpaper of dream car on pc instead cos the ride I would love to drive till end of it's lifespan is way over-budget. Not only that, it is impractical to own it in S'pore as our roads are so well-paved. Can I hear from those who hv managed to own a car for 10yrs and those who change cars on a regular basis? And those who bought their dreamcar (if such things do happen) and do not hv intention to change at all. Even if change, will probably get back the same model.

  16. Yesterday, my fren told me to be extra careful when travelling to M'sia. Was told the latest trick which the muggers do is to throw eggs on the windscreen! Not sure if it is new trick or old. First, the throw the eggs on the windscreen, and if you start to turn on the wiper with water to wipe, tats where it start to blur your sight, the smashed egg white will be sticky and foamy. Becos of the blurred vision , you are forced to stop the car . The muggers will jump in and rob you. Is this true???
