  1. The Mazda MX-5 is one terrific compact roadster but many have commented that it is a little lacking on horsepower. The current generation delivers around 170bhp and 190Nm of torque. For those who felt that the MX-5 is a little lacking in power; would a more powerful and more sporty-looking version appeal to you? Then sit back and read on. Mazda is bringing its MX-5 GT Concept to the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed which starts on the 28th of June to the 01st of July. The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept will be on display throughout the festival on Mazda's stand, as well as taking part in the hill climb in the 'First Glance' category. Mazda is said to be debuting the car, a right-hand drive model, in order to gauge public reaction towards it. There might be a chance for the car to go into production and it all depends on the public. The MX-5 GT Concept is hugely based on the company
  2. Turn 10 studios the developers of the well received Forza Motorsport series of games have allowed gamers and motor-heads to experience some of the best pieces of metal and cylinders on some of the finest of the race tracks, the latest being Forza 4. Now the Forza franchise is heading in a new direction. Forza Horizon, was officially announced at the E3 convention in Los Angeles. Developed together with Britain's Playground Games, known for producing games like GRID and DiRT, Forza Horizon heads into Need For Speed turf. Turn 10 Studios describes the Horizon as an action racing game. "Action racing is all about pick-up-and-play fun. This game has been designed so that if you love driving cars fast, if you love smashing through stuff, weaving in and out of traffic, you're going to be able to jump right in and have fun straight away,"says the developers. "What Horizon brings to the genre is authenticity, that's what Forza stands for. In the past there's been a problem with open road driving games in that they can feel a little arcadey. The problem with arcadey games is that the cars all start to feel the same. That doesn't work for Forza. In Forza the car is the star." The Horizon Festival The main part of Forza Horizon is the Horizon Festival. Its basically a Sims: Auto Fetstival DLC together with Facebook so to speak - A virtual place for car enthusiasts to gather. A mecca for car lovers. Besides hanging out with your car enthusiast buddies, you can race in festival competitions to further your careers, with events becoming more and more difficult. Just like in Forza Motorsports, any races can be done in individual mode or in online multiplayer mode. From the track to the open road For the most part, Forza Motorsport is on the racetrack. In Forza Horizon, you get to the open road. For inspiration the developers turned to the mountain roads of Colorado where they spent four months taking photos and videos to create the virtual world of Horizon, which has been polished to make sure that it's a fun driving experience wherever you go. Also for the first time players can drive off-road, among 65 other surface types in the game. Getting excited already? What if I mentioned you can also race at night, and AI traffic will be present on the open roadways, with some yet-to be announced special races as well. Looks like Forza is extremely inspired by the NFS Blockbuster, the Hot Pursuit which was developed by Criterion games, the guys who did Burnout. Kinect will also play a part for the voice-activated GPS system. Developers found the game's roads to be so expansive that the GPS system will direct players where to go and guide them to their next race or mission. The cars The full Forza Horizon car list won't be announced until later this summer, but the teaser gives us a bleak idea. The new 2013 SRT Viper will definitely be included, well it is featured on the cover art. So essentially what they are developing is the lovechild of Forza/Grand Turismo and Brunout/Need For Speed. Actually, what Turn 10 is really developing is an alternative to NFS:Shift and NFS: Shift Unleashed. I'm a bit of a gamer, and I've tried all the games mentioned here, and being a motornut, I cannot wait for the Forza Horizon. Forza Horizon will be on sale October 23rd.
  3. [extract] Back in November last year, Alfa Romeo (which is under the Fiat Group) is challenging, particularly at the Mazda MX-5, the rear wheel drive roadster market segment with a new generation Spider. But now it seems that things are going to change. The MX-5 will receive a sibling but it will not be a Mazda. Mazda Motor Corporation and Fiat Group Automobiles have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development and manufacturing of a new roadster for both companies
  4. After the release of the Toyota 86 and rumours of a Supra successor set to be released in a few years time, there is no doubt that things are changing in the Japanese auto firm. Once known for releasing boring cars, now the company is back on track with a new sports model and it seems that we are going to see more sports orientated models from Toyota. Some of us may have already known about a Supra successor that is slated for a release roughly in 2015. Rumored reports have mentioned that the car will be based on the Gazoo Racing Sports Hybrid Concept. But, latest reports have stated that Toyota is planning on a three tier sports model line-up; with a new sports car sitting below the 86 and the Supra successor above it. Toyota
  5. [extract] Back in 2009, Zagato and Perana Performance Group attracted some attention with their new Z-one. However, the Perana Z-One has now resurfaced under a 111-year old brand known as AC, which will be renaming and selling it as the the AC 378 GT Zagato. The 6.2-litre V8 outputs 440hp and 537Nm of torque. If that doesn
  6. [extract] Rumours about Nissan releasing a smaller sports model has been around for quite some time. Currently, the company has two sports models which are the 370Z and the GT-R (three, if you were to count the 2-door Skyline). But that might change soon as Nissan
  7. Styling is a matter of taste and many people prefer the classic look of cars back in the 1950s or 1960s and these same people also feel that cars today are not designed like they are used to. The picture you see above is not something from the 1950s or 1960s. It is in fact, a new car designed by the Huet Brothers from the Netherlands. You may ask; who are the Huet Brothers? They are a Dutch company who specialises in classic car driving tours in Europe. In 2003, the idea of a simple and affordable Barchetta styled sports car was conceived and it resulted in the HB Special (based on a Triumph TR6). In order to finance the project, they introduced a limited line of exclusive watches. Fast forward to today, the company has just released images of their next car project which is named the HB Coupe. Although the retro-looking car is still in the developmental stage, the company promises to offer the comforts and reliability of a modern car and with a classic styling. Plus, this time round, their new car project will have a fixed rooftop. The car weighs around 1100kg, all thanks to the full carbon fibre monocoque design. It will come in two engine options. The first one is a 3.0 litre six cylinder petrol engine that generates around 306bhp with a torque of 400Nm. It is not known from where the engine will come from but it is rumoured to be a BMW engine. The other engine is a 2.0 litre four cylinder diesel engine which produces around 204bhp. Torque figures and origin of the diesel engine is unknown at this time. Huet Brothers HB Special The petrol engine will have a 0-100km/h timing of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h and the diesel engine does the century sprint in 5.6 seconds. The engine will power the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. There is also a seven-speed dual clutch transmission option for the petrol engine and a six-speed fully automatic transmission for the diesel engine. The Huet Brothers are also planning on two more versions of the HB coupe. One is a performance orientated version and the other is a racing version. The company intends to finance the HB Coupe project with a line of watches (the same way they did with the HB Special) and they are available through their website. Pricing for the car is not out yet and the company promises more details in the near future. Huet Brothers website Photo credit: illustrations by Marco van Overbeeke via www.hbcoupe.com
  8. Vehicle barn finds are getting common nowadays. Usually it would be an old ordinary car, nothing special and sometimes it could be an old vintage that can fetch thousands of dollars after getting it restored. But this barn find is somewhat special as the car found was a rare 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Ghia Cabriolet. A scale model of the car. The Ferrari 212 Inter was built from late 1950 to 1953 and only 79 units were ever produced. The 212 Inter came at the time when Ferrari was moving towards production made cars. The 212 Inter models were built by 8 different coachbuilders and one of them was Italian automotive and coachbuilding design firm Carrozzeria Ghia. This particular one has a Ghia grille but judging from the body, it could be from another different builder and the hood is also different. A coupe version of the car. This car was recently found during an estate sale by a man from Michigan, USA named Bobby Goins. The car was found under a huge stack of boxes and Goins could only see the Ferrari emblem. He wasn

  10. [extract] Almost a year ago, Porsche revealed to the world their next supercar which is the 918 Spyder. It will be a limited production model as Porsche intends to build only 918 units. The car will boast a V8 hybrid engine which generates around 718bhp with an exceptional fuel consumption of 78mpg. Porsche will unveil a production unit of the 918 Spyder at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show and now, Porsche has officially revealed that there will be changes to the 918 Spyder which we can expect to see by late 2013 or early 2014. One of the key changes to the car is the engine size. The V8 engine will remain but the engine
  11. [extract] Tucked in a corner at The Petersen Automotive Museum is a bright yellow De Tomaso Pantera. The De Tomaso Pantera was an Italian super car produced from 1970 up till 1991 and over 7000 units were ever made. But the Pantera in this museum is no ordinary exotic supercar. It used to belong to Elvis Presley, who once shot this car and the bullet holes are still there to prove that this was the King
  12. In this current so-called economic climate, it would not be a surprise to most people that many are cutting down on their expenses. Especially when buying a car, many would consider what car they could get that is within their budget. Some would look into practicality and some would consider styling or performance. And there are even some who would consider all the three abovementioned factors. Shelby SuperCars has managed to register sales for 10 of their upcoming Tuatara model in a country where buying a US$1.3 million car is considered common or nothing. This is a perfect example to show that it is not difficult for a supercar manufacturer to sell their expensive cars in this current economic situation. US supercar manufacture, Shelby SuperCars made a trip recently to the UAE for the Dubai International Motor Show. The trip was to launch and promote their upcoming Tuatara model and also to find a company to import and distribute the car in that region, where some of the richest people in the world live. During the auto show, the company not only attracted potential distributors but they also attracted a fair amount of potential customers and the company managed to seal 10 orders during the auto show which amounted to US$13 million dollars. And the best part is, Shelby SuperCars has not yet finished the production of their Tuatara model. Shelby SuperCars hopes to reclaim the title of fastest production car from the grip of the Bugatti Veyron. Most of us would know that before the Veyron took that title record, Shelby
  13. The Honda NSX is the only car from the Japanese firm that can be considered as a supercar. A lightweight all-aluminium body, rather healthy V6 engine and great looks that put some of its western rivals to shame. This model alone lasted for almost 15 years, although it received some minor changes along the way. Honda had to cease production of the car when the car could not pass stringent global emission regulations that were to take place in 2006. In 2008, Honda revived the idea of replacing the NSX with a new model which featured a V10 engine, but they had to scrap that idea soon after due to the global financial crisis. But it seems that Honda is keen on reviving the idea again as they have confirmed that a concept (known as the Super Sport) will be showcased at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2012. This time it will not use a V10 engine, instead it will feature a hybrid powertrain. One of the first clues to a NSX successor was spotted recently at a film shoot for the upcoming Avengers movie. Honda refused to comment about the car in the photo but many believe that this could be the car in question. Should this car go into production, then we might get to see it as early as late 2013. Honda recently showed a fleeting image of the model to journalists at their Motegi Twin Ring race track. According to Honda chief of research and design, the car will define the new image of Acura (Honda

  18. A lot of people still equate the term sports car to one that offers fire-breathing, neck-breaking performance. One that is measured in 0-100km/h sprint times and top speeds. But is that always so? Take the car pictured above, for example. The Kia Forte Koup. I know that it is a controversial topic, but many still deride the Koup for its lack of outright grunt. That is despite its other positive qualities, like its sweet handling and smashing good looks. So what if it doesn't go to 100km/h in a blink of an eye? Performance shouldn't be the be-all-and-end-all for a so-called sports car. The Rolls-Royce Phantom can hit 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds. I wouldn't call it a sports car. Similarly, the Mazda MX-5 doesn't exactly have a powerful engine, but its driving and handling set-up can easily put many other faster cars to shame in the corners. 'Sports' is so much more than outright performance. It also has to have balance, involvement, engaging the driver such that he feels joy when driving. Because that's what driving is all about; the experience. I guess this perspective of 'faster is better' mirrors a lot of Singapore society. Many people only see the end, the destination, and want to reach there quickly, for whatever reason. Sometimes, it's the journey itself that really counts, and gives you the most pleasure. Some things are better when enjoyed slowly, at your own pace.
