  1. dear all... for those who drive manual cars, have you ever push start your car? i have a few questions, hope you can share your views... i start my car many times a day... i have no idea when my starter motor will kaput... so far its still ok... i have only once crank the car when the engine was already on... stupid... but no side effects right?... 1) when you push start a car do you release clutch on 1st gear or 2nd gear? 2) lately a few times when i park on a slope, and i think that letting the car roll down and then engaging a gear to start the car, will save the life of my starter motor... but i am not sure if this will damaging to the car as the car rolls, no power steering no proper brakes and when engine starts immediately everything comes on... wonder if this way of starting the car will damage the car's components... expert advise please... thanks...
  2. I have been experiencing difficulty in starting my engine for a few weeks now. the problem is not constant. sometimes start without a hint of problem, sometimes can't start. The problem is when i crank the engine, it will either: 1) keep on cranking like there's no fuel supply, 2) have a choking feeling. like wanna start but can't, and can feel e engine jerking, 3) start but after a few secs, will jerk and then stall or 4) crank a few secs, jerk a bit, then start without a prob. No difference whether i start the car: 1) when cold, 2) when warmed up, 3) in the day or at night, 4) after car parked for many hours or 5) immediately after shutting off the engine. it is just random. as and when it likes. Car is a Manual 07 lancer GLX 1.6 Brought to mechanic and still unable to rectify the problem. mechanic checked fuel pump, fuel regulator, injector, ECU, battery, fuel pressure and all seemed to be running fine. Any ideas anyone?

  10. Trainee lawyer bags $8,500 monthly pay Business Times - 18 Apr 2009 Trainee lawyer bags $8,500 monthly pay Foreign law firm pays record starting salary to NUS grad By SIOW LI SEN LAW firms may be trimming costs and easing up on new hires, but a freshly minted young lawyer has just snared a record starting salary. She starts her working life on a pay of $8,500 a month. Ince & Co, an English firm which has been in Singapore since 1992, has hired its first trainee, a 23-year-old woman who is in the process of completing her pupillage in a leading local law firm. The firm specialises in marine casualty practice and the energy sector. 'She will be completing her training with us over the next 18 months, here in Singapore, not in our London office,' said Richard Lovell, Ince & Co partner. 'I can confirm that current starting salary is $8,500.' The previous highest salary for a young associate is believed to be $7,500, paid by another foreign law firm, Baker Mckenzie. Salaries at local firms start from $3,000, with TSMP Law Corp's $5,000 for a junior lawyer said to be the top bracket. It's not that Ince & Co is defying the laws of gravity. Mr Lovell said that the layoffs of hundred of lawyers by some of the major international law firms in the US and UK relate to specific areas of practice. 'We're not quite the same as those firms . . . a lot of layoffs are specific to property commercial lawyers and corporate banking-related types.' Mr Lovell said that the new hire who will start work on June 1 is the first National University of Singapore-qualified lawyer the firm has taken on as a 'trainee'. The firm received some 20-odd inquiries for the 'trainee' vacancy, he said. Mr Lovell said that some were also interested in applying for a training slot in the firm's London office. 'We are still looking for one or even two suitable candidates to take up traineeships in this office next year,' he said. Ince & Co has 14 fee earners and 12 support staff. Despite the recession, the firm is expanding. In addition to hiring its first local trainee, it is taking on two more lawyers. 'Growth has been very organic,' said Chris Grieveson, Ince & Co partner. The efforts of the last three years to make Singapore a shipping hub have resulted in many shipping owners basing their operations here, he said. 'Our expansion has been fairly steady over the years, with it being pronounced over the last 18 months because of the increase in the client base and increase in work in non-shipping areas,' he said. The recession has not left business entirely untouched. 'On the commercial contract side, people are still doing business and being more careful and reviewing contracts,' said Mr Grieveson.
  11. Hi all, This CNY, market is pretty quiet, generally demand at the ground is simply lacking and not coming quick enough. Heard from other businessmen that they are closing longer for CNY period this year because there is no point to start early as business opportunities are just not there. So when are you guys starting work? Some I heard closing today and back on 2nd or 3rd Februrary. More are opening on either 29th or the 30th. Regards,

    Starting pay

Just curious, what is the current benchmark in starting pay for business graduates in the various industries? Assuming applicant is grad from local university? What about managment associates in banks? Consulting companies?
  16. To the champagne coloured Sunny on PIE towards Tuas at the Kallang ERP gantry this morning, stick your f**king cashcard into your IU before driving, and not f**king jam brake in front of the ERP gantry. You were very lucky that the red car behind you managed to change lanes in time, and that I was only 1/4 into the lane behind the red car and managed to swerve back. Otherwise, we would all have not been able to brake in time, and the tipper truck behind would have converted my saloon into a hatch, and both the red car and yourself would have been involved as well. You bloody deserved the high beam from the tipper truck.
  17. To be honest, i think this is neither lite nor easy , but theres nowhere else to post this. I will be starting up my own business when i get back but i'm unsure of how to go about it. Could someone tell me if the process is correct. I've a few questions too. I know i probably will have to register with ACRA first, but if the business is not done at the business premises (which will be just an office for all admin work) do i list that as the business address as all the works will be done at our contract locations. Next i'm guessing will be where i can apply for other accounts and services (e.g. business bank accounts, telecommunication services, contracts for supply of consumable materials, etc). After that i can apply for a small loan right? Currently I will be self-funding most of the business costs but i will probably need to take out a loan for one piece of necessary equipment (i.e. a hire-purchase vehicle loan to get to and from locations or should i just get a vehicle loan- are they the same in sg as they are different here in aust). Now the questions: 1)I have 2 options for the business address (its a home office). One a HDB flat (fully paid up) and the other a piece of landed property, but under my family's name but my name is not part of the title/deed. Can i use either (which would be better) or do I have to rent somewhere that has my name? 2) The business will start out in one industry (e.g. A) but if everything goes well it will venture into multiple industries (hopefuly within 2 years), but with A as a secondary business. Do i list the type as A or all the different industries for registration? 3) I was hoping to register the company in a generic name (e.g. ABCD) but use individual names each of the targeted industries (e.g. 1234). Can it be done so as ACRA says that i have to use the registered business name. Alternatively can i use the individual name and have the line "a subsidiary of ABCD" etc? 4) I don't think I need to register for GST as i do not expect gross profits to exceed the $1 million mark for at least 3 years (much lower to be exact), but would it still be advisable to do so?? 5)Does have any financial institutions to recommend for the vehicle business loan/hire-purchase? As much as low interest rates are good, I would prefer paying more for one that has excellent customer relations. 6)Would singtel or starhub be better in obtaining mobile (will be used intensively) and fixed phone services? Also for the internet as the company website will be hosted via another company's server, should i get a business internet connection or should i just use my current home connection to access emails and update the site? Thanks for the advice in advance.
  18. hmmm lately, i got this problem when starting my car when i turn my key to start the car the engine will like 'pause' a bit or like 'choke' before firing up at the same time, my car will give out 2 chirp sound exactly the same sound when you press your remote alarm to unlock the door. i've check the battery with my electrical officer and it is still in healthy condition anyone knows the problem? thanks
  19. I hate vehicles waiting at the side of roads with engines turned on! Why don't they just turn off their engines? Especially at night, when it's cool... Does starting and stopping your engine more frequently increase wear & tear? What are the ways to counter this problem? (change engine oil more frequently?)
  20. Hi guys. I have the problem of difficulty starting engine before. It was solved after the last servicing (the mechanic did not find anything wrong when I brought it in, but the problem went away, and we still don't know why), but it has come back the last few days. The problem is: 1. After parking the car for a few hours 2. Put in the key and turn - radio comes on 3. When I turn somemore to start the engine, nothing happens. There is no sound from the engine AT ALL. No "rrr" "rrr" "rrr" of the engine trying to start. Just a soft click. 4. To start the engine, I need to completely turn back the key (switching off the radio), then turn back again. Only then it starts. 5. The problem seems to go away if I step on the gas pedal a few times before I try to start the engine. I wonder if any of you guys have a clue as to what might be the problem? Thanks in advance! PS. I already blip the throttle before I switch off the engine.
