  2. A question on current state of stop-start systems. How do they work? Am I correct to assume that when the engine is turned off by the system during say a traffic light stop, the ecu is smart enough to : 1.) Stop the crank in such a position that one (assume 4 cyl engine) cylinder is at the end of the compression stroke, start of combustion stroke. When engine needs to start; 2.) For port injected, the air-fuel mixture is in there, ignite spark plug for that cylinder, engine turns over. 2a.) For DI, inject fuel, ignite spark plug, engine turns over. The starter motor is not required right? No traditional cranking, just use a spark to set it off?
  3. Most of us must be cursing and swearing when the alarm clock rang this morning, as the weather was perfect for sleeping in thanks to the morning thunderstorm. We have almost no doubt that the BMW driver in the following photos must be really angry with himself too! The following photos have been in circulation around social media platorms since the morning of 13 May 2020. Not much is known about the cause of the accident but the it did occur to us that this crash happened between Kallang Road and Geylang Road. The wet roads caused by the rain in the morning might have caused the BMW M2 Competition driver to lose control. With more than 400bhp going to the rear wheels, this is one very 'driftable' weapon...
  4. A Gojek passenger has shared on Facebook that a driver kicked him out when he realised that he was not getting a tip from his passenger! Joseph Lam, the Facebook user who encountered this bizarre incident recounted this incident in which he had touched down at Changi Terminal 1 and human traffic was heavy at the airport. Naturally, that lead to a surge in prices of private hire services. Happily after 10 minutes, he managed to get a driver with Gojek for $14 that was headed towards Tampines Street 34. Upon getting in the car, Mr. Lam felt that something was off with the driver. Below is an extract from his Facebook post. Driver: 3 persons travelling? Us: Yes *light laughter* Driver: Welcome back to Singapore Us: Thank you Driver: Does that entitles me to a tip? Us: Awkward laughter Me: I can give you 5 stars rating Driver: 5 stars rating is of no use for Gojek, useful for Grab though Us: Well, different platform, sorry to hear about that. Driver: Grab surge is $21 for a trip to Tampines now, so it will be nice if you can leave me a tip. Do you mind? Normally I will suggest my clients to leave me a tip of $3 if they don’t mind. Do you mind? Following this, Mr. Lam did not answer, choosing to believe that the driver would not mention it again if he was ignored. However, the driver repeated the question and Mr. Lam had no choice but to reply that he minded. Now here's where things started getting serious. Driver: Well ok if you do mind, I guess I will have to drop you at the nearest bus stop. Me: Dude you serious?! Driver: Yes, because I asked if you mind tipping me and you said you mind. So do you mind me dropping you off here at the middle of the road? Me: You f*ing serious right now?! Driver: I don’t want to force you to tip me, so I will drop you off at the nearest drop off point and you can try using grab. The driver then proceeded to drop Mr. Lam and his passenger off at a bus stop near the airport (20 Airport boulevard) after canceling the ride. After all the bags were unloaded, the driver reminded Lam that everything said has been recorded before remarking "Cause I know who really needs a ride now. Good luck my friends! " Naturally, netizens were supportive of Mr. Lam and condemned the driver for flouting LTA's Private Hire rules. For those who are wondering, there is a rule whereby the termination of a chauffeured private hire car, or requiring a passenger to leave a chauffeured private hire car, without reasonable excuse, before the passenger is conveyed to the destination, can result in a fine of $200 and 5 demerit points. Gojek's Response As of press time, Mr. Lam has responded by stating that Gojek has responded as his post has gone viral with more than 3,000 shares on Facebook. Gojek has since suspended the driver and has tried to do some form of service recovery but Mr. Lam has refused, claiming that his intention was not to gain anything from this incident but simply warn friends and family of such ridiculous extortion and threats. You can read more of Lam's updates below.

  7. after 6pm, says Amazon's India chief. Personally, I try not to work after office hours unless it's absolutely necessary. That's why bosses are important. I know of some managers who ask their subordinates to do PowerPoint slides for them even during CNY Day 2. Such bosses don't understand work is never ending. It's hard to strike a balance, but we must try. ********** https://www.todayonline.com/world/log-get-life-and-stop-responding-work-emails-or-calls-after-6pm-amazons-india-chief-tells BANGALORE — The head of Amazon.com’s India business has a radical idea for his troops: Log off, get a life. In an memo to his team this month, Mr Amit Agarwal counselled colleagues to stop responding to emails or work calls between 6 pm and 8 am in the interest of “work-life harmony". He also talked about the importance of work discipline and how to draw the line. The leaked note has broken through the sleep-deprived haze in the technology hub of Bangalore to set off heated discussions on social networks and WhatsApp chat groups. Mr Agarwal is a senior vice president at the Seattle-based retail behemoth, which has a reputation of fostering a cutthroat work culture and driving employees to burnout. Many in India wondered if this represented a softer turn for the company. Mr Agarwal has previously served as an executive assistant to Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos, who is often painted as a demanding boss. An Amazon representative in India declined to comment on the email. India, with its more than 1.3 billion people, has become a fierce battleground for Amazon.com, and the company has committed some US$5.5 billion to building up its network there. Recently Amazon lost out to Walmart in a bid to buy Flipkart Online Services, India’s leading e-commerce operator. While the demands of technology on workers has become a topic of debate around the world, work-life balance is severely off kilter in Bangalore, India’s third-largest city, where a significant portion of the one million workers employed in the outsourcing business cater to global customers and often work late into the night. It’s even more lopsided in the up-and-coming startup industry, where late-night meetings and weekend calls are the norm. Psychologists, sleep laboratories and fertility clinics have raised concerns about the mental and physical toll wrought by the frenetic work schedule. Insomnia, depression and suicidal tendencies are rampant symptoms, said Dr S Kalyanasundaram, a well-known psychiatrist who sees many technology workers in his thriving south Bangalore practice. “These days I see many 25- and 28-year-olds suffering heart attacks, something I haven’t seen in my four decades in this field,” he said. The doctor said all of his Saturday appointments are reserved for tech workers and often booked months in advance. “For many, there’s only one life and that’s the work life,” Dr Kalyanasundaram said. “It’s a disaster; it’s a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.” In startups from Bangalore to Delhi, founders and top executives lead the gruelling pace by example. Mr Ritesh Agarwal, the founder of the travel unicorn OYO Rooms and unrelated to the Amazon executive, said he gets minimal sleep during the work week. To catch up, he goes to sleep early on Saturday night and wakes up at midday on Sunday. In Bangalore, Mr Byju Raveendran, founder and chief executive officer of the education tech startup BYJU’s said he and his teammates leave recreation to late night hours, sometimes starting football games at midnight and ending as late at 2 am. Businesses from food delivery startups to late-night sports arenas cater to the insomniac workers. Mr Dilip Vamanan, founder of an e-commerce data analytics startup called SellerApp, that helps merchants sell on Amazon, said he clocks 14 hours a day in the office. After that, he takes calls and responds to emails at home. His colleagues complain of back aches, insomnia and stress. Amazon’s Mr Agarwal, may have an inspired idea, but it may be harder to implement than it would seem. “Indian startups have a lot to prove,” said Mr Vamanan. “They are nowhere near a scale where founders can step back and turn on the auto mode.” BLOOMBERG
  8. Time and time again MCF members keep on comparing the prices, specs and features of the cars sold in Singapore to other countries. They lament that they have been short changed by the ADs. Local cars lack this and that when we are paying so much more. Do understand that Singapore has a unique tax structure for the cars it imports. The democratic system is also unique. So stop comparing and be happy.

  11. Been quite confused how does the yellow box work. Read this somewhere: "Under the Road Traffic Rules, although part of the vehicle was in the yellow box, it was not causing obstruction to any other vehicle proceeding to or along that road junction and, as such, no offence was committed" and "if there is nothing to impede the flow of traffic one does not have to stop." Does this actually means that it is safe to stop in a yellow box, if there are no cars that I'll be blocking?
  12. I have this colleague who is quite a nice guy. However, he has this habit of digging his nose whenever the opportunity arises. He is not conscious about it and could dig it right in front of people throughout a group conversation. It affected me as we share the common door knob to exit the workplace. Sometimes, he even touched my mouse to access some data on the computer screen. I am sure our folks here might have encountered people around us with similar habit. How to hint to him without hurting/offending him? He is quite a nice guy though.

  17. i have some outdoor bamboo blinds painted in black and white which started peeling quite badly. Repainting them would temporarily solve the problem since it would be recurring in another year after exposure to the elements. Hence, seeking from the DIY gurus, if locally we could get something like below? or if they works in the first place (no paint crack/ peel with long exposure to sun). Or some other recommendations? many thanks in advance. https://www.amazon.com/Rubberseal-Liquid-Waterproofing-Protective-Coating/dp/B00F0U0IRA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488778172&sr=8-2&keywords=rubber+paint https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-Corporation-60004-Binding-1-Quart/dp/B000LNSPTE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488778377&sr=8-1&keywords=peel+stop

  20. Hello.. Need some advices. One day, I off my car engine for a while (maybe around ten minutes) to buy some things, and when I push start the engine, it shows a weak cranking and the dashboard lights up showing the battery and the oil warning light. Try second pressing the start switch and the car engine starts. This happens twice and the second time is after a fuel pumping. This car is now 168000km. What can be wrong? The battery and starter switch is checked OK. Thanks for the help
