One of the wounds needed 11 stitches. Public-spirited heroes nab handphone thief who slashed young woman SINGAPORE - Three motorcyclists nabbed a man who attacked a 20-year-old woman with a fruit knife while trying to steal her handphone at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 on Thursday (June 13), at about 9.50pm. Stomp contributor A, who saw the incident, said the woman was slashed on her left arm, chest and left thigh, and was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. According to A, the man is apparently a foreign worker, and was subsequently arrested by the Police. A elaborates: "This incident occurred yesterday (June 13) between 9pm to 10pm, at a traffic junction between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9. "Armed with a fruit knife, this man alighted from his motorbike and approached a young woman on the pretext of asking for directions. "The 20-year-old woman, not sensing anything amiss, took out her handphone and searched for directions on the phone. "The man suddenly snatched her phone but she managed to snatch it back from him. "During the struggle, he whipped out the knife and slashed her on her left arm, chest and left thigh. "Thankfully three public spirited motorcyclists saw the commotion and managed to prevent the culprit from escaping. "When the victim's relatives arrived, the woman was already bandaged and was about to leave for KTPH in an ambulance. "In a hurry, they only managed to thank one of the motorcyclists (a Mr Iqbal and his wife, a nurse) for their public spiritedness. "Their thanks also goes to the first gentleman who assisted in appending the culprit as well as the other couple who helped to direct the traffic during the commotion." to the bikers who step up to stop the fcuker and help the lady.

  9. Former teacher under probe for sex with male student who say SGrean not having enough heh-sho heh-sho why last time i skooling dun hav SINGAPORE - A former teacher from a top Secondary school is being investigated for allegedly having sex with an underage student, reported The Straits Times. The woman, who is in her 20s, is believed to have had sex with the boy more than once. The sexual encounters allegedly began when the boy, who is now 16, was a member of one of the school's sports teams. The woman was the teacher-in-charge of the team. The boy cannot be named as he is a minor, and the identity of the woman is also being withheld to protect his identity. The police confirmed that a report has been filed and investigations are ongoing. The case came to light after the boy's parents lodged a complaint to the school. (SABO!!!!!) The Straits Times reported that the former humanities teacher had left the school abruptly in March. She was reportedly seen crying in school the day before she left. Those who knew the teacher described her as "patient, knowledgeable, and outgoing". A former student interviewed by The Straits Times expressed shock at the news, as she "always put students first and knew where to draw the line". The principal of the school declined comment, saying they have not been informed by police of the matter. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Education said it will "work with the school as well as the police to investigate the case as necessary". This is not the first case where a female teacher has been accused of having sex with an underage student. In 2009, a 32-year-old teacher became the first woman to be jailed for having sex with a 15-year-old student in the school. The mother of two had six trysts with the boy in holiday chalets and in her flat. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 months' jail. The Penal Code was amended in 2008 to make sex between an adult woman and boy below 16 a crime. [email protected]
  10. To each his or her own. Local context die die must chiong up the corporate ladder in order to be successful meh? On a side note she though not that pretty but quite sweet leh... BTW married to a property agent liao hor... From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...ds_manager.html Posted on 23 Oct 2012 Top student from NUS chooses to be a McDonald's manager Source: The New Paper Photos: The Straits Times, The New Paper Ms Christina Ong made the Dean's List while studying at the National University of Singapore, an accolade reserved for top students. But instead of slipping on high heels and conquering the corporate world she chose to serve burgers and sundaes at McDonald's. Before even graduating from her course in project and facilities management, she had two offers from quantity surveying firms. She is now a manager at the fast food giant. While the 27-year-old beams with pride when talking about her job, many people think otherwise, she says candidly. "It's not something that people always think graduates should do. "Some think it's a job people do in their spare time as a short stint in their teens, and do not see it as a viable career option," she adds. Her career choice is an unconventional path among her peers, she muses. Most of her friends work in offices, not fast food joints. Her decision to join McDonald's full-time in March last year also raised eyebrows at home. Her NTUC cashier mother and coffee-shop assistant father felt that she could get better pay elsewhere. The fact that she had to work shifts was also a sore point. Fresh graduates like Ms Ong earn between $2,000 and $2,500 a month, says a McDonald's spokesman. Some of her relatives also asked her point-blank why she would want to work at a fast food joint, doing such menial tasks as mopping up greasy floors and taking orders. But she waves away the dismissive talk, showing perhaps the determined streak that allowed her to graduate as the top student of her cohort at Singapore Polytechnic. "At McDonald's, we lead by example, so I do everything from the basic to the advanced, like scheduling the work timetables of the crew and interviewing new hires." And it's clear that Ms Ong has great affection for her job and the company, which she started working for as a part-timer at 16. Every weekend, she assembled Happy Meals and dished out chilli packets for eight hours a day from 7am to 3pm, before going out with her friends. Through her schooling days at the Institute of Technical Education (where she won the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship), polytechnic and university, she worked two days a week at McDonald's. During the school holidays, she worked full-time. "I really enjoy the family-like environment and people there. It's a young, vibrant environment and it doesn't feel like I'm working at all. "I even worked on my birthday," she says with a big grin. That she bumps into friends who visit the outlet does not make her feel embarrassed or awkward, Ms Ong insists. Asked if their opinions bother her, she replies without skipping a beat: "If they don't buy it (my decision to work at McDonald's), I don't try too hard to convince them. I enjoy it. If you're always so concerned about what people think, your life will be very difficult." Ms Ong's parents are gradually coming round to her career choice. The job has taken her overseas - to the US city of Orlando for an international convention organised by the company, and to the Philippines for a restaurant leadership programme. Just two weeks ago, she bagged the Super Star Award - the highest service honour - at the Excellent Service Awards for the food and beverage industry. That certainly helped, she says with a smile. Although there are sacrifices she has to make for the job, she makes it clear that she finds them minor inconveniences. "I really don't like night shifts, which start at 10.30pm and end at 7.30am, or run from 5.30pm to 2.30am," Ms Ong says. Working over weekends is also something she does on a regular basis. She and her husband, a property agent, have learnt to work around it. "We try to have dinners together on weekday nights," she says. The bubbly and spirited individual adds that she sees herself working at McDonald's at least for the next five years. "One day, I may want to open a business of my own, a cafe perhaps?" she says.
  11. Disparity in tertiary education facilities by Kwek Jian Qiang 04:45 AM Dec 26, 2011 Singapore has often been accorded the honour of having one of the best education systems. Our students rank high in their scores, from mathematics to other subjects. There are, though, significant disparities in the quality of learning environments. When my grandmother visited Singapore this year, one of her most striking comments was when she saw a sparkling, shiny Institute of Technical Education (ITE) "skyscraper" campus. Her first impression was that, in such a quality school environment, the students would be the best and brightest in Singapore. It took me a while to convince her otherwise and her look of dismay was apparent. Indeed, a question should be raised: In a system where people are rewarded according to merit, why are our best and brightest not getting the best learning environments? I once attended a seminar at ITE College East. The interior was like a plush hotel: Sleek floors, plush lecture theatre chairs, high-quality tables - quality exceeding that found in our polytechnics and junior colleges (JC). From the exterior, with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a stadium stand, it looked like it was made for the Youth Olympics. What saddened me, though, was the graffiti on the tables and chairs. Apparently, the students do not cherish what they have. Should any JC or polytechnic student have access to such quality facilities, I have no doubt they would appreciate it better. There is a need to equalise government spending on school facilities. Campuses such as Anderson JC's and Victoria JC's pale in comparison to ITE College East's. Our brightest students, who will become Singapore's future leaders, should get the best facilities in order to excel and grow. We should reward according to merit. The writer is a JC student.

  13. More derangement caused by integration issues. Tension has grown in the recent months between some Silat Avenue residents and the tenants putting up at the HDB hostels there. On April 29, a tenant from the Back Packer Hostel, located on the ground floor of Block 149, Silat Avenue, said he was scalded by hot curry thrown down from a flat above. The Indian foreign student, Mr Sukhjinder Singh, 22, believes it happened because residents there are upset that the hostel tenants in the area have allegedly made the estate noisier, especially late into the night. Read the full report in The New Paper on Monday (June 18).

  15. So bad now as what this chap had described? Rampant cheating in tests and exams some more? Admit those days we had our fair share of "heavily-accented" lecturers but it was not too bad as we could still understand what they were trying to say. Besides we all relied on the lecture notes so not attending lectures were no big deal then. Still, if the situation has deteriorated until so bad like what he said then they ought to buck up & rectify the situation. Not nice to hear about such things of your alma mater... [shakehead] From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._standards.html Posted on 31 May 2012 NTU student says uni does not meet world-class standards An NTU student is disappointed with the standard of education in NTU, and says that it does not meet the standards of a world-class university. The Nanyang Business School (NBS) undergraduate said that some of the lecturers in the university lack enthusiasm and their thick accent makes it difficult for students to understand them. He said: "As a fee-paying student, I expect at least a decent level of teaching by tutors and lecturers alike. "Do not get me wrong, the majority of professors are able to spark students' interest when they teach. But a handful of them cannot do that. "There are some classes in which it is incredibly difficult for students to understand what the tutors are trying to say, especially those taught by heavily accented PhD students. "In one particular case, the situation was worsened by the tutor's lack of enthusiasm, with no effort on his part to improve his teaching methodology. As a result, many students skipped his lessons and had to study for the module themselves. He then suggests that these tutors should be provided with basic training prior to teaching. Despite the presence of invigilators, more and more students are cheating in tests and examinations as well. Students get to sit next to each other in the lecture theatres which makes discussion easy. He has even seen a student used his iPhone during a test before. He also faced a situation where an examination question was repeated due to the setter's oversight. STOMPer emoclefairy wrote: "I think there is a severe lack of qualified tutors in local universities. The student-tutor ratio is too high. "Our school fees are increasing, but do we really see a rise in the quality of education we are receiving? "It's no surprise that so many of my friends are considering to get their education overseas instead."
  16. A police report has been lodged against her. Ms Lai is currently pursuing a diploma in Radiotherapy at Nanyang Polytechnic. 20. I will generally consider a dual citizen like her to be Singaporean enough but I always thought President's Scholarship is a very symbolic award and a role model for Singaporean students. What does this award mean? She is not even serving military service. I feel we Singaporeans are like that old 46 year old first wife of the government who stuck with them through the hard times when they were poor and now that they are rich and found fancy and young PRC mistresses and is starting to hiam how old and ugly we have become. http://forums.asiaone.com/showthread.php?t=41882
  21. Nowadays SG kids study too much online porn but no social skills to pick up girls ? Poly student molested 4 fellow students A POLYTECHNIC student was sentenced to six months' jail and fined $600 on Monday for outrage of modesty and other offences. Jee Guang You, 24, was studying at Nanyang Polytechnic when he molested four victims at the library of the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 premises last November. He admitted to five of nine charges - two each of outrage of modesty and insulting modesty, and one of theft of undergarments. A Community Court heard that Jee was found to be suffering from paraphilia and fetishism by an Institute of Mental Health doctor. His lawyer Steven Lam said his client's family would make sure that he received proper treatment and monitor him closely. He said Jee, a former N-level and ITE student, got into the polytechnic through sheer hard work. The court backdated Jee's sentence to Dec 3 last year, which means he was released from prison on Monday. He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any of the combination. The maximum for insulting modesty is one year and a fine; and for theft, three years and a fine.
  22. SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old student has been given probation for stealing from an Universal Studio locker. Joel Teo Jie'Ao and his girlfriend Candy Han had hired an electronic locker at Sentosa's Universal Studio theme park on June 7. But due to a technical fault in the system, the door of another locker - with valuables inside - popped open. The pair could have reported the matter to the park staff. Instead, they decided to help themselves to the valuables in the locker which had been hired by Madam Lim Leh Kuan. Teo and Han, who is unemployed, made off with items including cash and a hand-held game worth more than S$2,000 in all. For theft, Teo on Friday was given a year's probation and has to perform 100 hours of community service. Twenty-six-year-old Han, who admitted to the offence in June, was sentenced to a month's jail. She was jailed for five months last year when she was convicted on two counts of theft in another incident. The court heard that on the day of the theft at the Sentosa theme park, Madam Lim, a 66-year-old housewife, had placed her belongings inside her locker, located near "the Mummy" ride. About 20 minutes later, she returned to find her valuables missing from the locker. She informed the police and security officers managed to track down the two thieves after viewing closed-circuit television footages of the area. All of the stolen items were successfully recovered. - CNA/fa Whatever happen to 拾金不昧?
