  2. The US Army is currently testing a prototype all-purpose vehicle powered by a Subaru turbodiesel-electric hybrid drivetrain. Called the ULV (Ultra Light Vehicle), it is meant to replace the HUMVEE. Commissioned by the Secretary of Defense and developed by the US Army's TARDEC (Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center), the ULV addresses some of the HUMVEE's shortcomings and serve as the next generation of go-anywhere military truck. Unlike the HUMVEE's V8, the ULV's petrol motor is a Subaru turbodiesel boxer making 175 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. However, even the military is changing with the times with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Jalopnik, the hybrid system is comprised of two Remy electric drive motors and a 14.2 kWh Navitas Li-Iron Phosphate Battery, which at peak power can generate 180 kW (241 hp). TARDEC says the ULV has a range of 337 miles at 35 mph on level ground. On pure electric power, it can cruise up to 21 miles with the advantage of doing so in sheer silence. The electric motors mean that a driveshaft is no longer necessary, and when combined with an improved undercarriage it's a significant improvement over the HUMVEE's ability to shield occupants from roadside mines, whose blasts originate beneath the vehicle. Though the Ultra Light Vehicle is so in name only, and at 13 thousand pounds actually weighs about 3,500 pounds more than the HUMVEE, it has a better power-to-weight ratio thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. In accordance with specs put forth by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the vehicle will have a payload capacity of 4,500 pounds and cost of $250,000 per unit over a 5,000 unit production run. Testing is scheduled to finish sometime this year, whereupon a determination for production will be decided.

  5. The New Subaru Legacy has finally been revealed in Chigago Auto Show last night. Exterior seems more like a facelift but is actually new. Interior takes a huge step forward. Looks premium. And for US, they will get the 2.4 litre turbo. Wonder if the Japan domestic market will have this turbo engine other than the improved 2.5 litre engine when it is launched. Since the Legacy has been revealed and will only be on sale in the States in September this year, perhaps in a few months time, will get to see the Outback. 6. Dear all, I was having a minor collision with this Causeway Link bus(yellow ones) on the causeway bridge towards Singapore custom (just came out from JB custom), I was trying to merge into lane 1 with signal on and the bus refuse to give way and hit the right side of my car near the rear wheel and rear right door while I already stopped (not sure whether he purposely hit me or not). So this bus driver said we both report to insurance and refused to provide me his particulars stating the company name and plate number sufficed. I filed online accident report with my insurer (AIG) and made police report also when I came back to Singapore. I would like to know that if I don't claim my insurance company (new car excess $800 and lost my NCD) and go outside workshop to do the job(around $850), will there be any problem? If the bus company insurer claim against mine, do I still have to fork out another $800 excess for this case? Have been calling AIG hotline for the whole morning but couldn't get through, so would like to hear dear bro's opinion on this. Thanks and happy new year to all!
  7. So I bought a used 10 year old car. What happens next year if I go for inspection and inspection fails ? I suspect the cat in the exhaust was modified or deleted ... Can I buy a cat to install ?
  8. I am considering a car cover when I am away for more than a month from my car. I won't be using or letting anyone take over my car during the period and the car will be parked in covered shelter carpark. But there is a high chance of rain water at my 1/4 of my car's rear so I am thinking of buying a car cover to wrap up the car for a month. Does anyone use car covers and what are their pros and cons ? My only worry is cats are going to hide under the covers and sleep ( scratch my body paint work ) ..

  16. Subaru has released another special edition WRX STI. Probably the swansong for this generation of the WRX, all 500 units have been spoken for. Traditionally regarded to be the final evolution for each generation of the Japanese all-wheel drive sports sedan, the RA-R badge stands for 'Record Attempt-Racing' and the launch of the car is also meant to commemorate the 30th anniversary of STI. With the company focusing on developing the car with 'lightness, speed and pleasure' in mind, the car has been upgraded in quite a few areas. Armed with a revised 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, the engine now produces 325bhp and 432Nm of torque and will allow the car to do the century sprint in the four seconds range . Subaru fans will be happy to know that its power to weight ratio figure is 4.498, which is a value that betters the 4.589 set in the previous special edition S208 model. Subaru also reports that its exhaust's ventilation resistance has been reduced by about 60 percent relative to its standard model while better management of airflow from the front intakes have increased the intercooler's cooling capabilities. In terms of handling, the car now wears high grip Michelin made pilot sports 4S tyres and has its suspension revised to give a 10mm lower ride height. Elsewhere, new STI made BBS 18-inch aluminum wheel, dry carbon made aero door mirror cover, a reduction of the windscreen washer tank from 4-litres to 2.5-litres, front and rear sports seats and STI Duracon shift knob help cut down the weight of the car. The car retails for S$60,700, around S$12,000 more than a WRX STI in Japan.

  20. Hi guys, my car is silver color. I was lazy and didn't wash for a few months. Now some areas can see dirt streaks caused by rain, and they don't come off when washing. I tried clay bar also cannot. Should I buy polishing product and try to polish myself by hand to remove the streaks or do I need to send to professionals who can use the machine?
