Leaders of Singapore's opposition parties have rejected Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's recent comments that a two-party system won't work in Singapore because of a dearth of talent. Referring to the speech PM Lee made at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum held on Tuesday, the Singapore Democratic Party said in a statement, "Singaporeans will decide the political system, not the PAP." "There's no need for the PAP to do anything with itself but to ensure a free and fair election system and a free and pluralistic media," it added. SDP was referring to PM Lee's revelation that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) had "seriously considered" splitting into two but eventually decided against it. Several opposition leaders said that it's more important to build a healthier political system and work towards a different future model of governance rather than be solely dependent on a one-party system. At the forum, PM Lee said that he is putting together the "next A-Team for Singapore" and told his young audience that now was not the best time to buy "insurance" and vote for the opposition. Best time for 'insurance'? Secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) Low Thia Khiang, however, told Today newspaper, "I think buying insurance is the right thing to do. If PM thinks we shouldn't buy insurance, then why do we buy MediShield? Should we wait till we fall sick before we buy it?" "Now is the best time to buy insurance. Conditions are now good for us

  3. Feb 22, 2011 Go back to old off-peak car licence system I HAVE owned an off-peak car for the past five years and initially, I applauded the change to the electronic licensing system as it removed the hassle of motorists having to make the trip to the post office to purchase the paper coupons. The new scheme also gives an extra grace period of a day for motorists to make the purchase online - which means, we could drive first and purchase later. However, my thoughts changed after April last year. I drove my car once thinking I would purchase the licence online when I got home. However, I forgot to do so and by the time I remembered, I had already missed the deadline by half a day. I contacted the Land Transport Authority (LTA) promptly and filed a report of my mistake. But without any consideration, a hefty fine of $500 was imposed on me. I had to make several appeals before the fine was reduced to $200. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again recently, except this time, it was my brother who drove the car. He entrusted me with the purchase of the licence and I totally forgot about it until we were notified by LTA of the offence. LTA said the off-peak car offences had shot up 10 times from the year before ("More off-peak car cheats nabbed after tighter checks"; yesterday). Are there any statistics on the percentage of such offences arising from innocent acts of forgetfulness and not intentional misuse of the scheme? The relevant authorities may want to relook the current system to avoid this problem. For example, perhaps an SMS or e-mail reminder could be sent to the vehicle owner to purchase the e-Day licence once LTA detects an off-peak vehicle on the road without a licence. I somehow prefer the old paper coupon system as the problem of forgetting to purchase the licence and ending up with a hefty fine will never occur. Louise Tan (Ms) Another char bor blaming everything else but her own self for mistakes. Think AWARE shud be put on a tighter leash so as not to produce so many whiners.

  7. My water purification system of 8 years old broke down recently and am thinking of changing a new one. This broken model is Narisia BioPure S250. I knew they have later models but I'm asking if anyone knew of other comparable or better brand in term of ease of intallation, features and price. Thanks you.
  8. There has been a change implemented to the MCF warning system. The previous 5 yellow cards before ban has been reduced to just 3. Meaning that the 3rd warning results in a ban. Another change is that we have added an expiry to the warnings. All warnings will expire after 6 months. However, bans will not expire. Members previously with 4 or 3 yellow cards will be changed to 2 yellow cards. Members previously with 2 or 1 yellow cards will be changed to 1 yellow card.
  9. SINGAPORE: The Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA) has written to Transport Minister Raymond Lim, offering some suggestions to fine-tune the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system. In a release issued on Wednesday, the MTA suggested the removal of taxis from the Category A COE quota, and doing away with Category E (open category) COEs. It said COE premiums are now among the highest since the COE system was started in 1990. These high prices come on the back of sharp cuts in the COE quota over the last 12 months. The cuts coupled with the high COE premium have had an adverse impact on both the motor industry and car buyers. It added that under current rules, the situation is expected to worsen this year. On the removal of taxis from the Category A COE quota, it said over the last 20 years, the taxi population has more than doubled. With the liberalisation of taxi supply in 2003, there is now no cap on the taxi population. MTA said taxi operators currently compete with the private car buyer for a COE as they are required to bid for a Category A COE to register their new taxis. This puts additional pressure on the Category A COE premiums. And because they are business enterprises, taxi operators are in a better position to bid more for COEs. The MTA said higher COE premium for taxis translates to higher cost for taxi operators and this higher cost would inevitably be passed to the commuter in the form of higher transport fees. Higher transport costs would lead to higher inflation which will affect everyone. As to doing away with Category E COEs, it said this category can be used to register any vehicle. The MTA has suggested that Category E COEs be removed in order to allow for a more equitable spread of the COE quota and to prevent possible speculation of category E COEs. The MTA is interested in public feedback and these can be sent to [email protected] My feedback is let the buyers bid their own COE.... only with COE than you are allowed to buy the car from AD. AD should only provide price without COE. This should be made mandatory and no AD should submit COE on behalf of buyer. In addition, buyer should get their own financing and financing houses should market the packages directly to buyers and not through ADs that get a cut from deals. MTA should also provide market price statistics on used car markets for make, age and mileage to create transparency for seller so that those cocky sales man do not profit at the expense of car owners.... If not LTA should screw their proposals.... let those crappy car AD go bust. I have no sympathy for them. Not enough sales and not enough scrap for export..... they are screwed.

  11. My second hand car comes with a touch screen IQC entertainment system. Till now I still do not know how to adjust the time setting on the screen. Can anyone help?
  12. LTA takes the cars that we scrap at ZERO value, then sells it to people at bidded value. Is this fair? No value is give to car that were scrapped. Its like taking farmer's land at Zero value then selling off to Developer at bidded value.
  13. Democrats propose a fairer COE system Tuesday, 14 December 2010 The recent announcement that the Government intends to slow the growth of the car population in Singapore has resulted in a hefty jump in COE prices. The latest bid for cars in Category A (1600 cc and below) is $47,604 in December compared to $39,000 in November - a jump of 22%. The existing system is highly unsatisfactory and in dire need of an overhaul for two fundamental reasons: One, it pits those who are financially powerful against those who are not. The system does not take into consideration the fact that working folks may have as great a need for private transport as those who are in the high-income bracket. For example, a couple who needs a car to run their small family business, ferry their children to and from school, and take care of their elderly parents would certainly have a greater need than another couple who already owns two cars but wants to buy a third for their teenage son. In such a set-up, a richer family would always out-bid a poorer family even though the poorer family may have a greater need for driving a car. Two, it must be realised

  23. Hi all I got a set of GPS/GSM alarm system installed on my car. I frequent Malaysia often. Anyone has any advise which telco's SIM card i should get. The primary function for this SIM card is in the event if the car is stolen (most likely in Malaysia if it happens), the GSm/GPS unit will send sms alerts to my handphone. I am undecided if I should get a SGp or MY SIm card and which telco provider? Anyone? Thanks.
  24. Hear so many accidents involving Taxis. Shold be it mandatory to have anti-collision system installed at all Taxis. If not available for retrofit kit, then new models should be made to have this active safety feature. It will slow down speed if too close, or intervene to brake and stop vehicle in collision is detected. No chance for them to tail gate lah
