  1. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_694341.html Anti-competitive 'Almost all car dealers insist buyers take up motor loans and insurance from companies they have tied up with.' MR LEONG SZE HIAN: 'I bought a new car recently and was told by the manufacturer's sole agent that I must take up its motor insurance policy with an insurance company. This was despite the fact that I could get a cheaper net motor insurance premium and a lower claims excess from another insurance company. This is clearly anti-competitive behaviour, which I understand is prevalent in the motor industry here. Thus, is it any wonder that motor insurance premiums have been going up in recent years, when consumers are forced to take up more expensive policies with less benefits in the event of a claim? My understanding is that almost all car dealers insist buyers take up motor loans and insurance from companies they have tied up with. What this means is that even if the buyer can obtain a car loan with better terms, he cannot do so.'
  2. Hi All, With the recent heavy rains, I understand that certain parts in Malaysia are now flooded. For those that have updated info or know which is the safer route to avoid the flood, kindly advise. I am only familiar with the Ulu Tiram -> Kota Tinggi -> Mersing route. (136km) Would this be more risk of flood compared to Air Hitam -> Kluang -> Mersing (220km) Thanks
  3. Why can't we be more responsible for our mistakes, like Japan? TOKYO: The president and five other top executives of Japan's biggest mobile phone operator will take pay cuts to apologise for a series of network troubles, NTT DoCoMo said on Friday. The firm admitted that it has struggled to deal with growing data traffic as smartphones boom in popularity, and pledged fresh investment to tackle the issue. President Ryuji Yamada will have his remuneration reduced by 20 percent for three months while the other executives will take a 10 percent cut over the same period. "I deeply apologise to our customers for the huge trouble," Yamada told a news conference. The cuts were "a clear means of taking responsibility for causing the series of network malfunctions, and leakage of personal information," NTT DoCoMo said in a statement. The company's most recent network problem came on Wednesday after the company renewed equipment to boost data processing capability, leaving 2.52 million subscribers offline for several hours. In December, it suffered disruptions to its smartphone e-mail service, leading to a system glitch in which e-mail senders' addresses were replaced by those of other users. The firm plans to invest 164 billion yen ($2.1 billion) by March 2015 to beef up its network and try to stabilise operations "in line with the rapid increase in the number of smartphone users," it said. NTT DoCoMo is trying to grab a bigger slice of Japan's expanding smartphone market, but faces stiff competition from rivals Softbank and KDDI, both of which offer Apple's hugely popular iPhone, which it does not. The firm, which is part of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group, separately said its net profit for the nine months to December fell 11.1 percent from a year earlier to 394.6 billion yen. Operating profit dropped 1.9 percent to 743.8 billion yen for the period on revenue of 3.17 trillion yen, down 1.1 percent. NTT DoCoMo slightly downgraded its full-year net profit forecast from 514 billion yen to 474 billion yen due to corporate taxation changes.

  6. http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest+News/S...111-321097.html so wtf are they trying to do? encourage ppl to leave work early so that thery can avoid the jam? TRAIN commuters who travel during peak morning periods could get more monetary rewards if they change their travel times to off-peak periods. These rewards, that can come in the form of stored value, are redeemable using credits which commuters earn when they use their ez-link cards to travel during non-peak commutes. This is part of a research study conducted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Stanford University and supported by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The six-month project aims to encourage off-peak commutes to reduce overcrowding on trains, and to study the effect of monetary incentives on passenger travel behaviour. Commuters who participate in the project can earn one credit point for every kilometre travelled during the peak-hour period between 7.30am and 8.30am. For non-peak hours between 6.30am and 7.30am, and 8.30am and 9.30am, they will get three credits per kilometre. Additionally, pre-selected "boost days" will allow commuters to get five credits for off-peak morning commutes. These credits can be exchanged for cash value in their ez-link cards on a monthly basis through AXS machines. Every 100 credits, or 100 kilometres travelled, will translate to $1. Alternatively, commuters can try to get more cash value for their cards by using their credits to play an online mini-game. Researchers behind the project aim to enlist the help of 20,000 people for the $450,000 project. During a media briefing at NUS yesterday, Professor Balaji Prabhakar from Stanford University said that a shift of 10 per cent in the number of commuters who travel during peak periods will "lead to a sizeable reduction" of passengers on board trains. Drawing from previous studies in India and the United States where similar incentivised approaches yielded positive results, Prof Balaji said: "We believe incentives are effective in changing the actions that people take on an everyday basis." Currently, SMRT has a discount scheme that offers passengers a rebate of up to 30 cents on their fares if they travel before 7.45am and exit at stations in the city. It was launched in October last year. LTA, which pumped $263,000 into the project, said such initiatives would allow better evaluation of incentive programmes and their effectiveness in easing the travel crunch on the rail network here. Its group director for corporate planning and research, Mr Lew Yii Der, said: "Travel-demand management is an area LTA has been actively exploring as it encourages more optimal use of public-transport capacity." Commuters my paper spoke to welcomed the initiative, saying it is a good way to ease the overcrowding on trains. Undergraduate Bruce Lim, 24, explained: "You are technically paying people just to adjust their trips slightly. "I think it's a good idea; hopefully, people will make the effort to make a change."
  7. Read in the news and I definitely agree with it. Most, if not all, Insurance agents are scums of the lower caste of the earth. Freaking busturds. They are farking uneducated and they handle your $$$. I rather put it in a tin can and give to charity. 4 farking 'o' levels and you sell life plans? Damn, they are even lower than car salesman! I support this move and eradicate the scums totally

  10. In my opinion, housing prices, inflation will not go up too much. because dun forget a good 80% of singaporeans are working class. if prices go beyond their reach, they will become upset and resentful. and more importantly, if 4 years down the road, they vote for the opposition, the stakes are too great. So the current garmen got to and will tackle this problem. to those working class...dun worry too much. that's just my view.
  11. Dear owner please note. I noted that your exhaust has liquid leaking out. It's flowing instead of dripping. Saw you at the junction of telok blangah. At 12noon. Not sure if this is normal for your car. If it is please ignore this message.

  14. Is this for a morning one way trip only? The $314.6 divided by 220 days = $1.43 per trip...so I think only morning trip. But the ERP $1870 divided by 220 days = $8.50 just for the morning trip....is very expensive. Anyone kena this $8.50 amount just going to office in the morning alone? I think need to purposely drive thru 4 ERP gantries to reach office! I think the savings comparison is over dramatized! Save up to $1.6k when you take the train Travelling by train is always cheaper than by car but just how much do you actually save? As much as $1,555.40, according to data released by the Land Transport Authority. And that's only the tip of the iceberg because the data compared the costs of a train trip via the Circle Line (CCL), to be fully opened this Saturday, with a motor-vehicle's ERP charges. A motorist spends $1,870 on ERP charges alone given that his journey starts between 8am and 9am. Other financial outlays were not included. In comparison, a commuter who travels from Ang Mo Kio to Esplanade by train via the CCL will spend $314.60 in fares. This is calculated over the course of 220 working weekdays in a year. In percentage terms, a commuter makes a whopping 83 per cent savings. Here's a closer look at how much you can save if you take the train via the CCL, which gives access to areas such as Suntec City and Millenia Walk, to name a few.

  16. Angry couple thrashes fortune teller's stall 15 Sept 2011 Shin Min News A couple thrashed a fortune teller's stall outside the popular Kwan Im temple at Waterloo Street yesterday afternoon. The fortune teller, known only as a plump man in his 30s, had allegedly swindled the couple and had sex with the couple's daughter in a supposed exorcism. The Chinese couple (age 50s) has a sickly daughter in her 20s. They had gone to the famous Kwan Im temple to pray for their daughter's health and were approached by the fortune teller who offered his help. The couple was surprised when the fortune teller somehow knew that they have a sickly daughter. He told them their daughter was possessed by spirits and had to be exorcised. He offered to exorcise her at their home. After the deed, the couple paid the man a few hundred dollars for his "help", only to find out later from their daughter that she was made to have sex with him. The furious couple went back to the man's stall to confront him but could no longer find him. They resorted to thrashing his stall. The duo created a commotion as they overturned tables and chairs, then smashed the stall's altar and incense burner. Eyewitnesses say the couple was swearing loudly and the woman was heard wailing "You cheated our money and took advantage of our daughter!" No one went up to stop them from thrashing the stall. There are more than ten other fortune tellers in the area, many of whom say the missing fortune teller is a con man who knows nothing. The man has also been missing for the past few months.

I think this is a common situation which sometimes gets difficult to decide. Any views? Many thanks for your ideas. I hope other forum users will find your views helpful when deciding also.
