What it's like for one teacher who already carries a gun Karl Donnelson is a science teacher in Colorado In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, there's a debate growing about what to do to protect students from shootings. President Trump said he's interested in arming teachers and other school personnel -- an idea backed by the National Rifle Association. At least four states are considering legislation that would allow educators to carry a concealed firearm in schools. Eight states already do. "I just signed up to teach kids since," said Karl Donnelson, a teacher in Colorado. "As you can see, with all my other jobs sometimes you have to do additional things at small schools, and this is one of them." Donnelson sat down with CBS News' Nikki Battiste to explain what it's like to carry a gun, while also working as a teacher. "If you're gonna protect the kids, why not give them a tool to protect them with," he said. Nikki Battiste: How long have you been a science teacher? Karl Donnelson: This is my third year. Battiste: How long have you been armed in your classroom? Donnelson: This is my first year. Battiste: What kind of gun is it? Donnelson: It's a glock, 9 millimeter. Battiste: It's concealed carry. Donnelson: Correct. Battiste: Where is your firearm? Donnelson: Can I show it to you? Battiste: Yes, please. In your cowboy boot? Donnelson: That's why I wear boots. Battiste: You didn't used to wear boots? Donnelson: No. Battiste: Is this gun loaded? Donnelson: There's nothin' in the chamber. The school board would not allow for us to put one in the chamber. Donnelson volunteered to carry a gun in his classroom, he's one of about 100 armed staff in schools across Colorado. Battiste: If you heard gunshots right now, what would you do? Donnelson: Lockdown, immediately, all the classes will have their locked doors. I would run towards the gunfire. Try to find out who it is and take care of it. Battiste: If an active shooter were to come in, you have to make a split life-or-death decision. Donnelson: Correct. Battiste: Are you ready for that? Donnelson: Yes. My biggest fear is missing and hitting a student. But that's the risk you take by carrying a gun. May I miss? Yeah, possibly. But would you rather have 50 kids killed or one? Colorado law prohibits firearms in schools, but a loophole lets districts designate armed safety officers. Armed teachers are required to pass a three-day firearms and trauma response course, which includes a simulated school shooting scenario. Battiste: How often are you being re-trained or refreshing? Donnelson: Every semester we go in and shoot the 100 percent qualification. Fifty-five percent of Colorado voters favored allowing teachers and school officials to carry guns on school grounds, according to a 2015 Quinnipiac poll. CBS News sat down with other teachers who are having the same discussion. Some admit they had mixed feelings when it first came up. "They could shoot our whole building up before we would ever have anybody get here for help," one teacher said. "As a human being, it was very saddening to me that that's what this has come to," another teacher added. Despite warning signs in front of the school, parents and staff are not told who is armed. Battiste: Do you think they have a right to know? Donnelson: That's up to the school board, administration, and if anybody asks me I tell 'em. Battiste: A lot of people would say this is a terrible idea. Donnelson: Yeah, and that's their opinion, and I respect it. But I think our community wants our students protected. We can't afford security guards, and if teachers are willing to and go through the training I think they should have the opportunity to help protect 'em. Battiste: What is the answer to keep our kids? Donnelson: There is no answer, and i'm not sayin' we're gonna stop school violence by havin' teachers with weapons, but at least it's a good start. So there is no answer, but this is what we decided as a community and as a school district. The school has other armed staff. Each had to pass a background check and a psychological evaluation. Adjunct teacher who attacked son's 10-year-old bully jailed 7 weeks SINGAPORE — A man who attacked a 10-year-old boy for bullying his son was jailed seven weeks on Monday (29 April). Adjunct teacher Tan Chin Tai pleaded guilty at the State Courts to one count of voluntarily causing hurt. The 43-year-old, who also works at a tuition centre, had confronted the boy at his son’s school and shoved him against a wall, leaving the child with a small fracture on one of his ribs. Tan’s lawyer, Cory Wong, said that the boy had been bullying his client's son since early 2017 by using vulgarities and taunting him. The boy also threatened to hit other children who spoke to the client's son. ‘I can bully you’ Tan Chin Tai committed the offence while picking his son up from school at around 1.15pm on 7 July 2017. When he spotted the victim heading towards the school’s gate with a student care staff member, he approached the boy. Tan then grabbed the boy’s schoolbag and pushed the him towards a nearby rubbish shed. He then shoved the boy against a wall and scolded him. “Just because you are bigger in size, you can bully others,” Tan told the boy. “Since you can bully my son, I can bully you.” Following the incident, the boy experienced pain in his left chest and visited the hospital. He was found to have sustained a small fracture on one of his left ribs. He was discharged on the same day and given painkillers. Tan has since paid $229.50 in compensation to the boy. Bullying escalated after incident According to Wong, the bullying got to a point where the father considered switching his son to a different school. The accused had earlier reported the bullying to the school but this did not stop the bullying. “(The father) was instead told that the victim had anger management issues, and felt that his concerns were being brushed aside. “True enough, the school remained ineffective in doing anything to stop the bullying,” said Wong who is from Invictus Law. The victim’s bullying also escalated after the incident, with him calling the accused a “murderer” to his son’s face, the lawyer said, adding that the son had been ostracised by his schoolmates. The boy had also told the accused’s son, “Your father confirm go to jail (sic). My mother is going to sue until you bankrupt (sic).” Wong pointed out that the accused’s actions were not premeditated. Tan had simply wanted to “engage constructively and verbally with the victim”, however the victim had “very cockily ignored” him. “In the heat of the moment, and being a loving father who would staunchly protect his son’s interests, the above drove (Tan) to act out of character,” said the lawyer. In mitigation, Wong asked for fine of not more than $5,000 for his client. For voluntarily causing hurt, Tan could have been jailed up to two years and faced a possible fine of up to $5,000.

French teacher from MOE Language Centre arrested in Bangkok for sex with minors SINGAPORE - A Frenchman whom the Ministry of Education (MOE) has confirmed teaches at its Language Centre in Singapore has been arrested in Bangkok for allegedly having sex with children. French-language teacher Jean-Christophe Quenot, 51, was arrested by police in a hotel room in the Thai capital on Monday (Feb 4), according to reports in the Thai media. A check of the MOE Language Centre's website on Thursday showed Quenot listed as a staff member in the French department, but his name was removed later in the day. Metropolitan Police deputy divisional commander Colonel Nakarin Sukhonthawit on Wednesday was also quoted as saying at a press conference in Bangkok that Quenot told the police he had taught French in Singapore. In response to queries from ST, MOE said yesterday: "Jean-Christophe Quenot is a teacher in the French department at MOE Language Centre. We are doing internal checks, and note that this matter is being investigated by the Thai authorities. "MOE takes a serious view of misconduct by our staff and will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against those who do not adhere to our standards of conduct and discipline. In serious cases, their service may be terminated." At Wednesday's press conference, the commander of the Metropolitan Police, Major General Senit Samrarnsamruajkit, alleged that Quenot would meet boys aged 13 to 15 at the Huay Kwang Stadium in Bangkok, and offer to teach them English and coach them football. This started a year ago. He allegedly then invited some boys to his hotel room for sex, in exchange for cash. When police arrested him on Monday, officers found a camera tripod in the hotel room and a video of Quenot having sex with a teenage boy, Thai reports said. They also found a computer with pornographic films, and 36 condoms. On Thursday, The Straits Times spoke with one of Quenot's former students Aaron Pereira, who said he recognised Quenot from his mugshot carried in Thai media and was "completely shocked and in disbelief" over the arrest. The 27-year-old, who works in the aviation sector, studied French as an A-level subject at MOE Language Centre's Bishan campus from 2008 to 2009. IPOH: Two boys and two girls in Form One have claimed that they were assaulted by a teacher at their school in Sitiawan after he became angry over an incident involving a playful act by a group of students. In the incident, which occurred at 5.20pm at SMJK Nan Hwa on Wednesday, the teacher, who is in his 30s, was said to have become irritable at a group of students who were playing with water outside a classroom. When one of the girls accidentally poured water on the teacher’s clothes, he punched her in the face, causing bruises. The teacher then entered his classroom to start his class. But, when he learnt that three students, including a girl, had forgotten to bring their notebooks, he became enraged and allegedly punched them. One of the boys was left bleeding after the assault. The students were sent for treatment to a hospital while their parents lodged police reports against the teacher. Chairman of the school board of governors Ling Leong Peng said the affected students were traumatised and had been advised not to attend school until action is taken against the teacher. Ling claimed that this was not the first time the teacher had resorted to violence. Last month, he allegedly punched a student at the school. He was also said to have hit the principal of another school where he was teaching earlier. He said the teacher’s previous cases were reported to the Manjung education office, but he claimed that no action was taken. “We want the authorities to suspend him and do something about his behaviour. This cannot go on,” he added. Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Jaafar Baba confirmed the incident.

I think I am old school, but I feel that the parents should take this as an opportunity to cut the hair of the child. Not sure if there is such a thing as pre-school humiliation, can't really remember much of what happened at pre-school. To be honest, his hair is really long and unkempt. I wouldn't like it if my child has a pre-school classmate with this kind of hair. There may be better options but I for sure do not want the teacher to be so restricted when attempting to teach life lessons for children. It's more likely the parents rather than the child felt humiliated. Zoo-phonics acknowledged that "some parents regarded her teaching methods as "old school", and said the teacher had been counselled. However, Madam Swee remains upset. "Humiliation for one second, two seconds or 50 seconds is still a humiliation which caused everyone he knows and sees daily to laugh at him," she said.

The 25-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the girl, allegedly had sex with the teen with her consent at a flat in the north of Singapore on May 20 and June this year. He has been suspended from teaching. His lawyer, Mr Shashi Nathan, asked for the case to be adjourned to take detailed instructions and to make representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers. His police bail was extended. The case has been fixed for a pre-trial conference on Dec 27.

This comes one month after police in Beijing detained 16 students over drug abuse at a school known as the cradle of China's rock music. The relief mathematics teacher in Shandong, known only by his surname Sun, sold marijuana in 31 provinces and cities, including Hong Kong, via social media such as messaging apps WeChat and QQ, the Qianjiang Evening News reported on Wednesday. Sun, 32, used code words to communicate with distributors and buyers. Drug users were called "pilots", sellers "captains", and words like "white snow" and "pineapple" referred to different grades of drugs, reported news website The Paper. "If marijuana users leave the word 'pilot' when they apply to join the QQ groups, they'd be approved," an unnamed Wenzhou policeman was quoted as saying. He added that group members could view drug ads sent by Sun and place orders through private messages. Sun had a dozen distributors, among whom the youngest was a middle-school girl aged 16. She was nabbed by police in June last year. It is unclear how many students had bought drugs from Sun but the number of universities and schools involved is shocking, analysts said. "Despite all the laws and punishment, more young people are using drugs and the Internet has increasingly become a trading platform," Mr Yue Shenshan, a Beijing-based lawyer, was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying. "It means that drug abuse is not only an issue of criminal offence, but also a serious social problem." Drug possession is punishable by fines or prison sentences. Drug traffickers face the death penalty depending on the amount involved. In a survey conducted by the Twitter-like Weibo, about one in two of more than 11,000 voters put the blame on corrupted social values, and close to 30 per cent of them criticised schools and families for insufficient social education. "This case indicates that some colleges and universities have given free rein to students," microblogger Qin Dading said in a post on Monday. "It's disappointing to see schools that are supposed to nurture talent turning into drug dens." Police started to monitor Sun's activities on social media last May and learnt that he sent to buyers marijuana labelled as tea leaves or chocolate, via delivery services. His supplies came from Canada, as well as Shandong and Guangxi, and were priced as low as 10 yuan (S$2) per gram, but he sold them at five times higher. He had traded more than 800,000 yuan worth of drugs in the first half of last year, according to Shanghai Daily. Sun, a graduate in agriculture studies, grew marijuana at a rented flat to "experiment and meet the increasing demand", police said. Sun, a father of a three-year-old boy, stored and packaged the drug in the flat instead of his home to keep his family in the dark. He started to sell drugs from May last year. His case is the latest in a series that has turned the spotlight on drug addicts in schools as police step up the crackdown on vice. On Nov 24, police raided the Beijing Midi School of Music and arrested 16 students, aged 18 to 29, after they failed urine tests, provoking intense discussion in the print media and the Internet. They were released after a three-day detention. Mr Zhang Fan, the school principal, said in early December that the students used drugs "out of curiosity", and that he decided to give them an opportunity to begin afresh. "I won't expel the students," he said. "They're young and should be allowed to err. But we can definitely change them, move them and teach them."

The 32-year-old teacher faces 10 charges of various sexual offences involving the underage girl. The offences took place between September 2012 and January 2013. According to court documents, he is alleged to have had sex with the girl eight times, as well as committed obscene acts with her twice. The girl was 15 at the time. The alleged acts took place at various locations, which included hotels. The accused's lawyer Roy Neighbour, asked for the case to be adjourned for him to make representations. The accused is out on bail of S$20,000 and will be back in court on April 28. If convicted of having sex with an underage girl, he could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined on each charge. Mrs Eileen Pua Jiu Er, 31, a chemistry teacher, suffered three fractures and was sent to hospital, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The accident happened on Tuesday, at a traffic crossing outside the school at about 12.15pm. Mrs Pua had been crossing a road along Boon Lay Avenue, just outside the school, when the accident occured. This morning, Mrs Pua spoke to reporters at the National University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She said she was on her way home and had just started crossing the road when she suddenly felt something hit her forcefully. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. "I saw the pedestrian traffic light turn green before stepping off the curb," she said. "I am a teacher, and I need to set a good example when I'm outside the school, so I definitely wouldn't cross when the light is still red," she told Wanbao reporters. She suffered multiple fractures all over her body, broken ribs and is expected to take at least a month to recover. Closed-circuit television footage was not able to determine if Mrs Pua had dashed across the road when the light had not yet turned green or if the van driver had beaten the red light. ------ Remember that earlier video - where the taxi jammed brakes after running red lights, and managed to stop before hitting the car? This van was not so lucky... hope the punishment is severe. Gotta teach drivers to slow down at amber and stop at red light; not to save a couple of minutes by running the red lights; but risking harming people. -

The woman, who is in her 20s, is believed to have had sex with the boy more than once. The sexual encounters allegedly began when the boy, who is now 16, was a member of one of the school's sports teams. The woman was the teacher-in-charge of the team. The boy cannot be named as he is a minor, and the identity of the woman is also being withheld to protect his identity. The police confirmed that a report has been filed and investigations are ongoing. The case came to light after the boy's parents lodged a complaint to the school. (SABO!!!!!) The Straits Times reported that the former humanities teacher had left the school abruptly in March. She was reportedly seen crying in school the day before she left. Those who knew the teacher described her as "patient, knowledgeable, and outgoing". A former student interviewed by The Straits Times expressed shock at the news, as she "always put students first and knew where to draw the line". The principal of the school declined comment, saying they have not been informed by police of the matter. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Education said it will "work with the school as well as the police to investigate the case as necessary". This is not the first case where a female teacher has been accused of having sex with an underage student. In 2009, a 32-year-old teacher became the first woman to be jailed for having sex with a 15-year-old student in the school. The mother of two had six trysts with the boy in holiday chalets and in her flat. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 months' jail. AsiaOne Monday, Oct 08, 2012 GUANGZHOU, CHINA - A video clip showing a young girl being flung and kicked by a teaching assistant at a children's rehabilitation centre in Guangzhou, China has sparked outrage and sympathy among netizens. The clip was first uploaded and shared by local Chinese media in Sep this year, and shows four-year-old Qiu Yaoyao (not her real name), who is reportedly autistic, being abused by the older woman after the little girl did not cooperate during a daily exercise routine. The woman is identified as a 30-year-old staff member of the centre, which is a day care centre that takes in autistic and disabled children to teach them life skills and independent living. In the clip, she cen be seen holding up Yaoyao by her hands and instructing her to stand. But when the little girl does not obey instructions, she forcefully throws Yaoyao onto the floor behind her. The woman then proceeds to kick at the unresponsive little girl as she lays on the floor. All this while, other staff can be seen in the footage, but they do not interfere. But as Yaoyao continues to lie on the floor, the woman picks her up again - this time, by her ankles - and throws her over in a 360 degree flip. After realising that Yaoyao is unconscious, the woman asks her colleagues for help, and they bring the little girl to the hospital for emergency treatment. A Guangzhou newspaper reported last week the little girl has since undergone neurosurgery, and is able to sit, but she cannot stand yet. Her speech is also impaired. Yaoyao's father, who was interviewed, told media that he was informed that his daughter was hospitalised after an accident, but the rehabilitation centre's staff did not tell him that she was beaten. But he became suspicious due to the serious nature of her injuries, and asked to view footage of his daughter at the centre. The accident then came to light, and he made a police report. Local media further reported that the teaching assistant has since been charged with assault and battery, and has offered to make payment 200,000 yuan to the family for the girl's medical expenses. Separately, the rehabilitation centre also offered monetary compensation to help pay for Yaoyao's medical treatment of more than 800,000 yuan. The YouTube video has been viewed more than 80,000 times and garnered comments attacking the staff's barbaric treatment of a vulnerable victim. The incident has generated tens of thousands of comments from the online Chinese community, with even celebrities and writers condemning such barbaric acts that occur in China's education system, especially towards disabled children who are particularly vulnerable. The video clip has also been highlighted in international media, and brings into focus how autism is still largely underestimated by Chinese doctors.

Bertrand Ngien Wen-Tseah, 37, was faced with eight charges, including trespassing a female toilet, destroying evidence and outrage of modesty when was a science teacher at Yuhua Secondary School. According to the Chinese dailies, he had installed three pinhole cameras in one of the school's girls' toilet on the fourth level around 7am on Feb 15. Shin Min Daily News reported that at least three girls were secretly filmed. A student discovered a camera in the toilet and alerted a staff member, who later found two more similar devices in other cubicles in the same toilet, reported The New Paper. The staff member placed the cameras in the staffroom and left the room. Around 1pm on the same day, Ngien entered the staffroom and saw the cameras on the school's operations manager's table. He knew that his deeds have been discovered and decided to destroy the evidence. An hour later, when the office was empty, he removed the three micro SD memory cards. When the school discovered the memory cards were missing, footage from the closed-circuit television camera installed in the staffroom was checked and Ngien was seen removing the memory cards. He was called back to the school on that afternoon, and on the way there, he threw away memory cards into a storm drain. He confessed to the principal, who told Ngien to return home, saying he was going to report the matter to the police, according to Lianhe Wanbao. When he reached home, Ngien threw away the laptop which he had viewed the recordings on. The $443 laptop had been issued by the Ministry of Education and Ngien has since refunded the cost. Ngien pleaded through his lawyer that his wife had suffered from mental illnesses which resulted in him developing depression. He claimed to have sought psychiatric help in 2009, and is current seeking treatment with the Institute of Mental Health. He said he was remorseful for committing the offence. He added that being fired by the Ministry of Education was his greatest punishment and pleaded for a lighter sentence. The case will adjourn in court on July 25 for sentencing
