  2. Folks, Have been having my share of fun with road trips in SE Asia. Been to Southern thailand beaches twice from Singapore driving and the itch got bigger to explore further up north. Thanks to fellow MCFers Josephsatu, Raymondism and Shor who have been there driving, was able to run my plan across them and get opinions. In my experience so far, driving in Thailand has been super pleasant and was not scary at all. That gave me the strength to get over the initial butterflies. It is a 15 My steed has been a 2007 2.4 liter Honda CRV with Michelin tires. It is a 19 day trip covering the history and breadth of Thailand. The car that withstood the entire journey.. And these are the places we went driving from Singapore... This feature of Apple is so cool, that when ever you take pictures using iPhone, they are geo tagged and go sit right where they should be in the map. And the Odometer after the entire trip. And when I mentioned I will be visiting Pattaya enroute, my friends gave me this thoughtful gift, calling me a bad guy.. A day by day run now... Day 1 : 26th January 2013 This is the day when I start from Singapore. The NSHW that day was a night mare with so many traffic jams and accidents. The stats speak for themselves. I could average only 61 kmph. I might have seen 6-7 pileups because of accidents and dont know what is it with NSHW and the accidents that day. I left Singapore early morning around 7:00 and could reach Hatyai only by 9:00 PM in the night. The stay was at a place called Regency Hotel. It is nice place, costed me 1600 TB per night. This is the route taken.. And the statistics.. Day 2: Day2 plan was to drive all the way to Hua Hin. A distance of @800 kilometers to be done. The traffic was almost nothing and the road I took was AH2 all the way via Surat thani, The drive was super cool, with winding roads at times and I could average easily 90+kmph. Here is the route taken And here is a partial statistics as picked half way through. The Sygic GPS application crashed when I was in Ayuthaya and I had to reinstall it, losing the travel logs between Singapore and Ayuthaya. Fortunately I had the screen captures which is what is published here. The stay at Hua Hin was in Hyatt Regency. Thanks to Bro Raymond, I got a huge discount in the price of Club room. The hotel is massive and the beach is fantastic. Not much crowd and a quiet place to unwind.. Room Beach Barai Spa Spa Washroom Night market outside Hyatt called Cicada If you happen to stay in this hotel, dont miss the massage. It was fantastic, and for a price of @2400 Bahts, i got two hours of massage. It was awesome. Do try the massage. Day 2 stay was at Hua Hin and the next day is ear marked for sight seeing in Hua Hin. Will be posting them one by one. Now got to go and catch you all later..
  3. Wonder whether it is true? http://www.chiangraitimes.com/briton-neil-hartley-recants-his-living-hell-in-a-thai-jail.html PATTAYA – Neil Hartley a British National who was held in a Thai prison for three years, after admitting offenses linked to a pharmaceuticals website selling Viagra and steroids, Neil Hartley, 61, was arrested in November 2011 at a beer bar complex in central Pattaya. He claims a Thai lawyer told him if he pleaded guilty he would be fined – but instead he was thrown in jail for three years. He was advised to admit purchase, concealment and distribution of illegal narcotics, import-export violations, pharmaceutical-license offenses and working without a work permit. Mr Hartley, who was sent home to Heysham on a flight to Manchester last Saturday, said: “There is so much corruption over there. “I went to Thailand to work with a friend, who was running a website exporting pharmaceuticals all over the world. He had been running it for six years. “I only helped with e-mails and orders. I was a scapegoat. The Thai police visited the man who ran the website and demanded thousands of pounds. “When he did not pay them, they arrested me two weeks later, while he was out of the country. “I was on remand for a month, then went to Pattaya Court, and the judge jailed me. There was nothing I could do, I was in chains and leg irons. “The British Embassy did not help me.” Reliving the moment he was sent to prison he said: “It was all men and ladyboys. “I was thrown in a van with around 60 prisoners. The guards would hit people with sticks if they said anything. They are animals. “When I arrived at the prison, Nong Palai, my cell was 10 yards by five yards, with 85 criminals inside, including murderers. There were around 1,500 people in the prison. “It had bars at either end and a concrete floor where we had to sleep. If you wanted bedding you had to pay for it. “There were two British men in when I arrived; they had stolen whiskey from a supermarket. Within a week one was dead, beaten to death.” Neil added: “The ladyboys were kept separately from us. They made a tent out of sheets and would sell sex to the prisoners at weekends so they had money to buy cigarettes. “When my mum sent me money I bought 15 blankets to stitch together to make a makeshift bed, and paid for better food – although it wasn’t much better than what we were getting. I lived on tinned sardines but at least you knew they weren’t contaminated, otherwise you got a chicken’s foot, or cold rice. “They threw us out of our cells from 7am. There was just a yard to go in. I saw a Thai man stabbed with a sharpened iron bar.” At 4pm, Mr Hartley says he and the other prisoners were put back in their humid, stinking cells. He said: “You had to pay for a bed space with cigarettes. There was a hole in the floor for a toilet – shared by all of us.” One doctor visited the prison twice a month, but Neil was unable to get medication at first without a passport as it had been seized. He said: “I thought about ending my life, but just got on with it.” Mr Hartley, who formerly worked at Pines Lakes leisure complex near Carnforth, took up the ‘job’ in Thailand when he was made redundant from Pontins. He is virtually blind in one eye, with untreated cataracts in the other. His tearful 90-year-old mother, who lives in a static caravan in Heysham, said: “He’s the only thing I have in the world – and I’m the only thing he has in the world. “This last three years has been terrible. “He says the bed I have given him was paradise compared to what he is used to. “When I first saw him I walked past him twice, I did not recognize him. He is seven stone.” His friend Peter Rowley, who used to work with him in Carnforth, picked him up from the airport after Thai authorities set him back to Britain on his release. He said: “People need to be told about the corruption over there, it is unbelievable.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the arrest of a British national
on November 4, 2011, in Pattaya, Thailand and provided consular assistance.”

I believe that most PS3 users are on the PI version... The guy over the phone told me that the Thai made are manufactured factoring the local weather and all... Any comments about the difference between the 2?

  9. After its world premiere in India last year, the 2014 Honda City made its Asian debut in Thailand recently. They will receive a total of six different variants starting from 550,000baht(S$21,000) for the base model which is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission. For those who want some convenience, they can opt for the new seven-speed CVT transmission which is said to improve efficiency and effectively replaces the old five-speed automatic. The new City gets a mildly improved 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine which churns out 120bhp and 145Nm of torque. Changes to the engine include a tweaked i-VTEC system, friction reduction (low tension oil seal, zigzag piston pattern coating) and weight reduction via an integrated resin intake manifold. Like its rival, the Vios, the 2014 Honda City also grew in terms of wheelbase length to improve its interior space. An increase of 50mm allows it to match the Nissan Almera’s wheelbase while overall length is just 25mm longer than the previous model. The Thailand-market City gets a seven-inch multimedia system which supports Bluetooth and other media connectivity features. An interesting feature for the 2014 Honda City is its touch-enabled automatic climate control system which is quite similar to Lexus’s IS saloon. It now also gets rear air-con vents which will prove useful in our country. Other niceties include keyless entry, push-start ignition and multi-function steering wheel with paddles shifters. Some of the cars with higher specifications will feature six airbags, VSA stability control, Hill Start Assist and a multi-angle rear view camera that allows you to adjust up to three different levels. To those who are keen on the car, expect the 2014 Honda City to reach our shores in the second quarter of this year.
  10. The unusually long cold winter hitting Thailand in the past three months has killed at least 63 people, while temperature in capital Bangkok on Thursday fell to the lowest level in three decades. "Bangkok hit its coldest record in 30 years Thursday morning when the temperature fell to 15.6 degree Celsius," Songkram Aksorn, deputy director general of the Thai Meteorological Department, was quoted by the Nation newspaper as saying. Songkram said this year's cool season has been the longest for a decade, lasting almost three months. About 45 provinces across the country have been declared cold-spell disaster zones, with more than 25 million people affected. The unusually long cool season, blamed on a cold front coming from the north, has also had an impact on Thailand's rice crop. The new rice harvest coming in is not of good quality, because it has flowered too early with this cool season's unusually low temperatures, according to Vichai Sripraset, an honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association. "When temperatures are low, the fertilization is bad, and then you get a lot of empty rice husks," he added. 11. From its previous generation to the recently launched one, the Honda Accord has been a generally well-liked family sedan. So to add on a bit of spice, I've decided to see whether there are any nice tuning bits for this handsome car. Mugen has already done some cool packages for the Accord. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that this is actually the Accord Hybrid, which has not arrived on our shores yet but it seems to me that most of the styling changes can be retrofitted onto the normal Accord too. On the outside, Mugen has given it more presence with a new set of front, side and rear skirts. There are carbon front grill and carbon boot lid spoiler as well. You can also opt for their new 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels to improve on the handling side of the already well-balanced sedan. Other than the above mentioned, those who already have the car should go and get a set of coilover to complete the stance look!

  13. Mitsubishi Motors has revealed the first official photo and initial details of the brand new Attrage compact sedan. The car is the production version of the G4 concept which was displayed at the 2013 Bangkok Motor Show. Mitsubishi said the name 'Attrage' is derived from the word 'attractive'. Mitsubishi claims that the Attrage will deliver 'driving pleasure thanks to agility and pleasing driving dynamics'. Powering the Attrage is a 1.2-litre 3A92 three-cylinder MIVEC unit which churns out 76bhp at 6,000rpm and 100Nm at 4,000rpm. The engine is mated to a choice of CVT or five-speed manual transmission as standard. Based on the Mirage hatchback, the compact sedan measures only 4,095mm, which is about 300mm shorter than its close rival, the Toyota Vios. There are no interior photos of the new sedan at the moment but Mitsubishi says that the car offers generous rear seat legroom. The new model will be launched in Thailand come July 2013.
  14. Hullo, I came to know about the above recently. Just asking for those who hv been there to share their experiences can? Thank u very much.
  15. A friend of mine visited the Nissan showroom recently and was informed that a hatchback from Thailand would be launched in Singapore sometime in August this year. A visit to Nissan Thailand website revealed that this model could likely be the Nissan Pulsar. The Pulsar hatchback is known as the Tiida (Latio Sport) in other parts of the world. Hence, the Pulsar is the spiritual successor to the Latio Sport, which was a popular hatchback in Singapore. The Pulsar shares the same engine and transmission options as the Sylphy. This means a DOHC Twin C-VTC 1.6-litre that pushes out 116bhp and 154Nm of torque as well as a 1.8-litre version that churns out 129bhp and 174Nm of torque. Both engines are mated exclusively to an Xtronic CVT gearbox. The Nissan Pulsar measures 4,295mm by 1,760mm by 1,520mm (L x W x H) with a wheelbase of 2,700mm. This is similar to the Sylphy and is 100mm longer than the first generation Latio Sport. Should the Pulsar arrive at the Lion City, it will face stiff competition from the likes of the VW Golf, Opel Astra, and not forgetting the forth coming Mazda3 and Forte K3 hatch.
  16. I don't know about you but, for me, it isn't that easy to imagine when the time will come for me to drive a Lamborghini Aventador, let alone owning one example of one of the world's finest supercars. However, of course, there're people luckier than me that they get to drive such a hyper-powered car within every single day. Only thing is, some of them are probably just not careful enough, like this Thai driver here. Mr. Somkiat Kruwongpaiboon, a 45-year old local businessman, told the police that one of his car tyres blew up as he was heading to his father's funeral ceremony, causing his proud supercar to spin. As a result, the unfortunate Aventador had to 'kiss' (by that, I mean crash into) a number of electric poles as well as trees with its front fascia before it finally came to a halt. Yes, you guessed it right, there's no way that the car wouldn't suffer from a heavy damage after such an incident. The Great Garuda in Hindustan myths However, it was a relief that the Thai businessman survived and only suffered from negligible injuries. According to him, the fact that he survived despite the severe damage to his Italian supercar was all thanks to the amulet he was wearing at that time. It was encrusted in diamond and in the shape of the Great Garuda (which is a God-like character from Hindustan myths). Well, it seems like there're times we need to believe in myths, too. Nevertheless, it seems that perhaps the 690bhp 6.5-litre V12 engine of the Aventador is just too much to handle. You see, that engine, along with its seven-speed single clutch transmission, can push the car from 0-100km/h in a mere 2.9 seconds. To top it off, the raging Italian bull won't stop gaining speed until it reaches at least 349km/h. Judging from the images, it seems like driving a supercar is one thing and, keeping it in one piece is a yet another. So, are you in for a ride in a supercar or would you rather play safe with the average car?
  17. A few days after Mitsubishi showed an official photo of the new Attrage, the brochure of the new model has leaked onto the internet. As the compact sedan will be produced at Mitsubishi Motors Thailand's factory at the Laem Chabang plant, the brochure is printed in Thai. However, we can still make some sense out of it. The Attrage will be available in three trims, namely the GLX, GLS and the top-end GLS Ltd. The GLS models will be equipped with twin airbags while the GLX makes do with just a driver's airbag. The GLS Ltd variant will get a Start/Stop button, reverse camera and MP3/DVD/Bluetooth function. The buyer can choose from six different body colours. Mitsubishi claims that the attrage can achieve a fuel consumption figure of 22km/L, which is superior to its rivals, the Nissan Almera and Honda Amaze. The car is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder MIVEC engine which is good for 78bhp and 100Nm of torque. Transmission options include CVT and a five-speed manual.

  19. After the on-and-off rumours circulating around the web for some time about the latest Yaris being produced in Indonesia, I now know for sure what will actually happen. The world renowned Japanese automaker, Toyota, is finally about to officially appoint Indonesia as the production base for the latest Yaris. Toyota's headquarters, the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), will announce its decision to make use of the second plant of PT Toyota Motors Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) which is situated in Karawang, West Java, to manufacture the aforementioned hatchback variant within the next two months. As of today, the plant is only manufacturing the automaker's Etios Valco, which is an economical car, up to 70-80 thousand units per month. The production capacity of the plant itself is actually higher than that and totals up to 140 thousand units per month. As such, it seems wise for Toyota to choose this plant to produce its next model. Judging from the Japanese car manufacturer's decision to switch the production of the Yaris to Indonesia, it seems that the company doesn't want to depend too much on a single country anymore, especially after having to suffer from considerable losses due to the recent flood disaster in Thailand. For your information, Toyota also switched the production of the Fortuner to Indonesia from another country last year. Toyota's decision to manufacture the Yaris in Indonesia also further emphasises its commitment to invest in this developing country. As of the end of the fiscal year 2012, President, Director and CEO of TMC, Akio Toyoda, announced that the Toyota Group was well prepared to spend a total investment value of Rp 26 billion(S$3.3 million) in Indonesia until 2020. For starters, the company had already spent up to Rp 13 billion (S$1.6 million) for the next five years and the investment was spread across six companies, the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) itself, Toyota Auto Body Co., Ltd. (TAB), Denso Corp., Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. (AS), Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TT), and the Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (DMC). To support its long term plan in Karawang, West Java, Toyota has also prepared a site measuring 150 hectares. Plan is, the site will be used to establish a new engine plant and the third Toyota plant in Indonesia, provided the company's car sales keep on showing a positive trend. Well, it seems that Indonesia may finally be developing for real, indeed.
  20. Toyota has released the third generation Toyota Vios at the Bangkok Motor Show. The compact budget sedan wears the brand's new corporate face as seen in newer models such as the RAV4. The higher-end variants are equipped with projector head lamps. Measuring 4,410mm long, 1,700mm wide and 1,475mm tall, the new Vios is a good 110mm longer than its predecessor. If my memory served me correctly, the new car is even longer than the last made-in-Japan Corolla we had in Singapore. Sad to say, the new Vios still uses the same 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE engine producing exactly the same 109bhp and 141Nm of torque as before. The engine is mated to, as you would have guessed, an optional four-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed manual is standard. The power train seemed to have remained the same since the first generation Vios. On the inside, the new Vios gets a four-speaker audio system with MP3/USB/AUX connectivity. The instrument panel has moved from the center to right, right in front of the driver, and has a sporty binocular design.

  22. [extract] Mitsubishi has officially announced the G4 Compact Sedan Concept that will make its official debut at the Bangkok International Motor Show towards the end of March. 24. F1 chief executive, Bernie Ecclestone, has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal saying that the first street race in Thailand will take place in 2015. Similar to the night race in Singapore, the event will be staged under floodlights and held in the country's capital, Bangkok. "An F1 race is likely to take place here in early 2015 instead of in 2014 in our initial plan," said Kanokphand Chulakasem, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand. Red Bull's co-owner Chalerm Yoovidkya, a Thai himself, is believed to be involved in the preparations. According to Red Bull's representative, Michael De Santiesteban, he is almost 100% certain that Thailand will host an F1 race. Apparently, he met up with Ecclestone a month ago. Singapore's night race has been extended till 2017. With Thailand likely to mimic the race here, the city state's F1 future beyond 2017 will be put to greater doubt.
