  1. The Ford Fiesta made its ASEAN debut at the recent Thailand International Motor Expo, and will go into production next year at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant. The USD 500 million facility is a joint venture between Mazda and Ford. The Thai factory will supply Fiestas to the ASEAN region, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa , which are all the major right-hand drive markets. A sedan version of the Fiesta will be made available at a later date. Over the past 10 years, more car manufacturers are moving their production to Asean cities to lower their production and probably distribution cost. However, consumers do not really benefit much from this. For example, a 2.0L Thailand made Toyota Camry is going at SGD 98,488 whereas a Japan sourced 2.0L Nissan Teana is priced at SGD 89,500 (source: www.sgcarmart.com, data updated as of 10 Dec 09).

A good example to follow will be reflected at http://www.aas.com.sg/activities/sawasdee_08.htm Instead of heading into bangkok, we can stop over a few more days at phuket/krabi. I'm open to suggestions but I'll like to see a show of hands who may be interested.

  12. Toyota to make hybrid, bi-fuel cars in Thailand In future, it will carry out its planning for Asian models there By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent Published: March 12 2008, The Straits Times JAPAN'S Toyota Motor, soon to be the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, is grooming Thailand to be more than a low-cost production venue. Mr Yasuyuki Kawamoto, chief engineer of the new Thai-made Toyota Corolla Altis, revealed to The Straits Times yesterday that Toyota will be making the new Camry Hybrid in Thailand. The high-tech petrol-electric model is currently available only in the United States. Mr Kawamoto said this will happen 'within the lifetime of the current Camry model', which was launched two years ago and is due to be replaced in 2011. The Camry Hybrid will likely be built in Toyota's plant in Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok. 'The hybrid drive system will come from Japan,' Mr Kawamoto said, referring to the 105kW motor and 244-volt nickel metal hydride battery pack that assist the car's 2.4-litre petrol engine. More immediately, the 50-year-old chief engineer said, Toyota is developing a 1.6-litre bi-fuel Corolla Altis in Thailand, to be ready by the year end. The car - a 'greener' version of the 10th generation Corolla Mr Kawamoto launched in Singapore yesterday - will have a 70-litre compressed natural gas (CNG) tank that occupies 'about a quarter' of its boot space and stiffer coil springs in its rear suspension to take the extra load. 'The coil springs will be the same as those in the Corolla wagon, which is about 100kg heavier than the sedan - same as the CNG car,' he said. Mr Kawamoto said the bi-fuel car is targeted at the taxi market in Thailand, but that 'it is possible' to export it to Singapore. Based on the Singapore tax incentive package accorded to CNG cars, the bi-fuel Corolla could cost $45,000 or less - compared with the $65,000 price tag of the 1.6-litre petrol model. Toyota distributor Borneo Motors has priced the 1.8-litre Corolla Altis at $73,000. The Thai-made Altis is wider and better equipped than its Japan-made twin, the Corolla Axio, which parallel importers have been selling since last year. Mr Kawamoto proudly points out that the new Altis has LED tail-lamps, made 'specially' for the Asian market. 'In the future, we will do all our planning for Asian models in Thailand. Currently, we still do it in Japan.' Asked whether Toyota has overtaken General Motors as the world's largest vehicle maker, Mr Kawamoto paused before saying: 'We will do it this year.' The race may already have been won. GM is said to have made 9.284 million vehicles last year, 226,000 fewer than Toyota.

  17. Heard news over radio that the Thai election was won by PPP party which was formed after the disband of Thai Rak Thai party by former PM Thaksin. The PPP had won the majority of the vote and so.... back to square one. Its show that the ppl of Thailand had supported former PM all along until the military coupe in Sep 2005. Way to go, PPP. Will the military junta give way to this elected political party is yet to be seen. . I personal view is that the military would not release their power to elected government of PPP.
  18. The reason given was that a live telecast will interfere with the 9.30pm news. What a stupid reason! The match can easily be telecast live on another channel but I guess they have decided not to do that as it would incur some $$$$ loss for mediacorp........tcss only, at the end of the day it's all about $$$$$.

  25. Friday November 24, 8:43 AM Japan's Mazda to build new plants in Thailand, America Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. plans to build a small-car plant in Thailand in a joint effort with top shareholder Ford, a Japanese business daily said. Mazda also plans to bring a factory of its own onstream in North America, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources. Demand for fuel-efficient Mazdas has been growing in the United States and Europe because of high gasoline prices. By boosting output capacity, the Japanese automaker is set to play a key role in the Ford group's small-car operations, the report said. The Japanese fifth-largest automaker and Ford Motor Co. plan to spend more than 50 billion yen (424 million dollars) combined to build the Thai plant, which they hope will begin operations in 2009, the newspaper said. The factory is to roll out some 200,000 vehicles per year, including the 1.3-liter Demio, which is slated to be fully redesigned next spring, it said. Because the partners are considering manufacturing transmissions there as well, overall investment may balloon to about 100 billion yen, it said. The platform for Mazda's remodeled Demio is slated to be used in Ford small cars, so the new Thai plant will become a key facility for the Ford group's small-car business, the newspaper said. In addition, Mazda is considering building a new plant on its own possibly in Mexico, with the aim of bringing the factory onstream before 2015, it said. seems we gonna get our mazda rides from tom yum sources soon ..
