  3. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/strike-iran-trigg...-154738986.html Strike on Iran would trigger 'World War III': Guards Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike if Israel prepares to attack it, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander told broadcaster Al-Alam on Sunday, a day after his boss warned that conflict was inevitable. Should Israel and Iran engage militarily, "nothing is predictable... and it will turn into World War III," Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told Iran's Arabic-language television network. Hajizadeh, who is in charge of Revolutionary Guards missile systems, said: "In circumstances in which they (the Israelis) have prepared everything for an attack, it is possible that we will make a pre-emptive attack. But we do not see this at the moment." He added that Iran would deem any Israeli strike to be conducted with US authorisation, so "whether the Zionist regime attacks with or without US knowledge, then we will definitely attack US bases in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan." He warned that Israel "cannot imagine our response -- and it will sustain heavy damage and that will be a prelude to its obliteration." On Saturday, the head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said war between Iran and Israel "will eventually happen, but it is not certain where and when." It was the first time a senior Iranian official had acknowledged a probability of war breaking out between the two arch-foes. Jafari, quoted by the ISNA and Fars news agencies, also said such a conflict would lead to the annihilation of Israel. "If they begin (aggression), it will spell their destruction and will be the end of the story," he said. On Sunday, Jafari's deputy, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, told Fars in an interview that Iran's "defensive strategy is based on the assumption that we will engage in a war, a massive battle against a global coalition led by the US." He said the Islamic republic had made preparations to "crush" the enemy by hitting "enemy bases in the region, the security of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the energy market, as well as the lives of enemy forces." He added: "We will not start a war. But if someone wages war against us, we will launch continuous offensives." Tensions have risen significantly in recent weeks, with Israel threatening to unleash air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel believes Iran's nuclear programme to be aimed at developing an atomic weapons capability that would menace its existence and its current status as the Middle East's sole, if undeclared, nuclear weapons power. Iran insists that its atomic programme is exclusively for peaceful, civilian ends, but it is locked in a deepening stand-off with the UN nuclear watchdog and the UN Security Council over the issue

  6. The movie title is already a spoiler. Dark Knight Rises sounds more like the first movie of a trilogy rather than the last. What's more, Batman is going to get his back broken. He is also aging so how is he going to protect Gotham as a lau hero? Most likely Bruce Wayne will either die or get crippled and his Batman persona will be taken over by this guy: Btw, the movie is 2 hrs 45 mins long so remember to empty your bladder beforehand. After this blockbuster, I think there wouldn't be another epic until The Hobbit in December

Guy who doesn't pay up at disco has his face plastered on bus stop STOMPer Jayson saw a poster of a man who did not pay up after a night out at the disco. Please pay and do not embarrass yourself, says the STOMPer. Wrote Jayson: "Drink and you don't pay... "We were waiting for the bus at Pioneer and found this on the notice board of the bus stop. "It is located at the bus stop at Pioneer MRT station. "Such an innovative way to vent their anger. "So lesson learnt today: You drink you pay. If you 'hang flower' at disco, please pay. 13. Lives are lost, the MIW have spoken, help is given to Cabby's family from all walks of life, even Shanmugam promised assistance; Chinese embassy even issued a statement to remind its citizens of their conduct. You could say that Shanmugam is wayang and what's not. No matter what MIW do, there will always be cynics questioning their motives. But I don't think this is the main issue. I think the issue is whether are these xenophobia/anti-PRC bashing way overboard or justified? thanks to social media, especially Temasek Times and Temasek Review which paint a very negative impression that Singapore is anti-PRC. Are we Singaporeans really that xenophobic? Temasek Review is seeking for US$50,000 donations again. So are we going to donate to them to help propagate xenophobia? On retrospect, are all the PRC in Singapore you have encountered, pests? Hey, I think the McDonald counter staff, a PRC is polite and serves with a great smile!
  14. Assuming as it is. That is, CPI remains at exactly like this for the rest of your life. Yes, comfortable is subjective, driving a BnB maybe comfortable to some, but not to others. This I know, so it's up to your own definition. Not trying to judge or anything. I'm just curious about the level of expectations for the people in this forum. For me.....I think $120K should be quite reasonable. You don't have to reveal what you chose if you don't want to.

  17. 10 Year Old's Love Story Little Bruce and Jenny are only 10 years old, but they know they are in love. One day they decide that they want to get married, so Bruce goes to Jenny's father to ask him for her hand. Bruce bravely walks up to him and says, "Mr. Smith, me and Jenny are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage." Thinking that this was just the cutest thing, Mr. Smith replies, "Well Bruce, you are only 10. Where will you two live?" Without even taking a moment to think about it, Bruce replies, "In Jenny's room. It's bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely." Still thinking this is just adorable, Mr. Smith says with a huge grin, "Okay then how will you live? You're not old enough to get a job. You'll need to support Jenny." Again, Bruce instantly replies, "Our allowance, Jenny makes five bucks a week and I make 10 bucks a week. That's about 60 bucks a month and that should do us just fine." Mr. Smith is impressed Bruce has put so much thought into this. 'Well Bruce, it seems like you have everything figured out. I just have one more question. What will you do if the two of you should have little children of your own?" Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says, "Well, we've been lucky so far." Mr. Smith no longer thinks the little s--t is adorable.

  19. Award winning teacher sexually abused students Amanda Phua | The New Paper | Fri Mar 30 2012 Pervert. Monster. The adjectives can flow but nothing quite describes what a 38-year-old primary school teacher did to three of his male pupils. The Chinese language teacher had robbed them of their innocence. The Straits Times reported that the teacher had won several school awards and had received letters of prais from parents. He also sat on the school's disciplinary committee to handle its most difficult students and had been voted 'most caring teacher' by students. However, on March 12, he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexually penetrating a minor and two counts of outraging the modesty of two other victims. He carried out the acts in 2009. Two of his victims were only eight when he acted out his desires. Another was 11. He was jailed 10 years yesterday, but the boys' suffering could last much longer. Perhaps the most apt description of the teacher is that he's unrepentent. In his mitigation, the teacher simply offered: "I hope that the court will take into consideration that I have no previous criminal record and to be lenient in sentencing." But what of the boys? It has been devastating, a victim impact statement revealed. Two years after he was abused by his teacher, one of his victims was caught inappropriately touching a fellow student last year. Oral sex The victim was only eight when the teacher performed oral sex on him twice. When asked why he touched his classmate, the boy broke down. He was later referred to a counsellor. The boy's father had revealed the incident in a victim impact statement. The father said he too was suffering. He saw a psychiatrist to deal with work and family stress, and said his financial situation was also affected because of the costs of the counsellor and psychiatrist both he and his son had been seeing. Having to keep his son's suffering a secret from his own parents "took a tremendous toll on him", deputy public prosecutor S. Sellakumaran told the court. And though they may have been young when they were abused, the vile acts will haunt them, psychiatrists told The New Paper. Dr Brian Yeo, a consultant psychiatrist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said victims can end up with more sexualised behaviour like touching themselves at a younger age. He added: "It's not just his sexual maturity that will be affected, but also his emotional state. In this case, the teacher had a duty of care, so the boy may also find it difficult to trust people, or to talk to people, because the person he trusted abused his position of authority." And the boys can also end up feeling guilty. "The victims may blame themselves for getting the teacher into trouble. Hence, reaction from their parents is important. "If the parents or adults around them scream, shout and blame them, they will feel guilty even when they are the victims," said Dr Yeo. Psychiatrist Adrian Wang said for some young victims, the impact is not immediate. He said: "It doesn't affect them less significantly because they grow up with the memory. And as they mature, they will think more and more about what happened to them as a child and they might feel violated. "There is a potential for it to continue to traumatise them as years go by." Dr Wang echoed Dr Yeo's concern that the abuser was someone who was supposed to protect the victims. Confusing He said: "When the protector becomes a tormentor and deceives you into doing something like this, it is very confusing for the child. They are unsure of their role in it, hence it causes guilt. "For young kids from the age of eight to 10, it causes a mixture of fear as well as disgust because they expect adults to protect him." Dr Wang said parents often blame themselves when a child is abused. He added: "Putting the accused in jail gives the family a sense that justice was done, that the accused cannot harm them anymore and that things were set right." He molested kids on school premises The teacher was jailed 10 years and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane. Seven other similar offences were taken into consideration during sentencing. The teacher enticed two of the victims, aged eight and 11, with a portable game device, then sexually abused them. The acts took place from early 2009 to July the same year. Of the four cases the accused was charged with, three took place in the primary school's computer lab and one took place in the male staff toilet. All were during curriculum time. His disturbing acts came to light only when the school's principal received two complaints from a parent and a pupil about the teacher's inappropriate touching on July 17, 2009. It is not clear if the complainants are involved in the case. Deterrent Asking for a stiff deterrent to be meted out, deputy public prosecutor S. Sellakumaran compared the case to a previous one. In the previous case, the parents of the victim allowed their child to associate with the culprit. However, said DPP Sellakumaran: "The parents of the victims in the present cases had no similar choice. "They could not decide on which teachers would be teaching their children. "Indeed, they had no reason to so decide as they were entitled to expect that all teachers in the school would uphold the unreserved trust placed in them and adhere to the highest professional and moral standards." He added that the victims in this case had no choice but to return to school.
  20. Man loses $910,000 lottery card suit against Singapore Pools 28 March 2012 Straits Times A man who sued Singapore Pools, demanding prize money of $910,000 on lottery cards he had bought, lost his case in the High Court on Tuesday. Mr John Berchmans had bought 91 Scratchit! cards for a dollar each, and his winnings amounted to $263. But he claimed that he had been misled into buying the cards because he took the words on them to mean that he would automatically win the top prize of $10,000 if he got three identical symbols in a row. The 69-year-old part-time housing agent lost the gamble when the High Court on Tuesday dismissed his misrepresentation suit against the lottery operator and ordered him to pay costs.

  22. Yes, I'm hurt but...I can still fight: Ex SMRT CEO Former SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa talks about, among others, quitting to defuse the criticism of her and the night she decided to resign. Tue, Mar 20, 2012 The New Paper SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa is now serving out her resignation notice, moving around with crutches after a major knee surgery. She talks about, among others, quitting to defuse the criticism of her and the night she decided to resign. In the end, she became a magnet for abuse. And only by stepping down could she defuse the situation and allow the organisation to get on with the job. This is how former SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa describes the situation she found herself in early this year, just before she resigned. "The whole organisation was overwhelmed with trying to answer and defend on so many fronts," she says. "I had become a magnet attracting all the criticism. If I divorced myself from the organisation, then at least it could start on a clean path." Speaking in an exclusive interview with The New Paper on Sunday at her home off Lornie Road, the 57-year-old says it was her decision to leave and she was not forced out. There was mounting pressure on her to step down after the two major train service breakdowns on Dec 15 and 17 last year, affecting 221,000 commuters in all. The Criminal Investigation Department, the Land Transport Authority and SMRT are investigating the disruptions and a hearing on the findings, open to the public, will begin on April 16. But why did she decide to hand in her resignation letter on Jan 6, when only weeks earlier she had said she would be "staying put to fix things"? She says: "After trying so hard for 21/2 weeks or so, I felt that things were snowballing and it was very difficult... because every faction was coming at us. April 5 to be her last day "It took me one whole night to think about it." She says she "always believed I will do the best for the organisation that I belong to". So she asked herself what was the best thing she could do. She realised the best thing was to leave because "it would defuse the bubble straightaway". "It's like a bubble, you know. You defuse it, let people get on to do what is right for the organisation," she says. But didn't the company say in December last year, even before the train disruptions, that Ms Saw had expressed the desire to "move on" this year, after having served nine years with the company? SMRT's longest-serving CEO clarifies that the idea of quitting had indeed been brought up then, but she decided to stay on when the company made a bid to operate the new Downtown Line. All that changed, however, after the train service disruptions. What's next for her? Ms Saw reckons she has had a good run with SMRT, but she is not about to call it a day yet. "I'm going to be 58. I don't think I'm about to ride into the sunset." A few offers have come up since she announced her resignation, she reveals, but she has yet to decide. "I always thought people would say: 'Don't touch this person after all that's been said and done'. But my friends say: 'You've moved SMRT to be a very different organisation. "I think I've been proven to be able to manage a business and I think I can continue to do something, probably very different from SMRT," she says. She sees herself being active for another five to 10 years. And if not on the corporate front, then always as a martial arts teacher, having mastered taekwondo and tai chi chuan. Her last day with SMRT will be April 5. With a bit more time on her hands these days, she has finally started to deal with one issue that she has put off for some time - her health. The martial arts training and fighting has taken its toll on her body. She recently had major knee surgery and is moving around with the help of crutches while regaining her strength with physiotherapy. She also has four slipped discs, but adds quickly in case anyone thinks she's an easy target now: "I can still fight."
