  4. #1 ---- Daily meals at coffee shop Stall holders in kopitiams say they have to increase prices coz they need to cover costs and make a living. Since one major component of their costs is rental, why not HDB put a cap on the rentals in heartland kopitiams so that food prices do have be go up, and heartlanders can enjoy their meals at reasonable prices?? Currently HDB charges kopitiam rentals based on bidding system ie the highest bidder gets the place and in turn sub-lets the spaces to stall holders.... the winning bidder takes a cut doesnt matter how high he bids to win..... winner: HDB and winning bidder, lose: customers.... whether the individual stall holders make or not, it depends, but chances are they win also...... the winning bidder and his tenants (stall holders) simply pass the high cost (rental) to the consumers, who LL gotta pay, no choice. If the rental is capped, and draw lot to decide who get the stalls, consumers are 'protected'. Your views? Revert public transport systems to public-run operation Currently, MRTC, SBS etc have to make profits to satisfy shareholders. Passengers' comfort etc are secondary or even further down the list of priority. To maintain high profits, trains and buses are packed even at 11pm.... frequencies of trains/buses are lower than it should be to cope with demands, why? To satisfy shareholders' expectation in dividents. If the operation is changed from profit-oriented to customers-oriented, the 'profits' made can be ploughed back to improve the train/bus services instead of going into shareholders' pockets........... Your views? Any other suggestions?

  11. Red Cross finds $90k has gone missing 08:02 AM Dec 06, 2010 SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross has filed a police report against an employee for allegedly misappropriating about $90,000. The employee, an administrative assistant from the finance department, has been suspended from duty. In a statement late last night, the society said the problem was uncovered during internal checks on its accounts on Dec 1 and that the discrepancies started in February. It added that the employee cannot be named as investigations are in progress. The police report was filed on Friday and the society has also reported the incident to the Commissioner of Charities. When contacted, Singapore Red Cross secretary-general Christopher Chua said: "We're taking it seriously. We're investigating and we'll tighten our processes to ensure it doesn't happen again. We'd like to assure the public that their donations will be taken care of." The society was unable to divulge details, but Mr Chua said the missing money did not come from any specific fund or donation drive. The incident is the latest in a number of cases over the years to have occurred in the charity sector. The Commercial Affairs Department has been investigating, since May, possible misuse of funds at City Harvest Church. Investigations are also continuing into the Sri Siva Krishna temple in Marsiling. Past high-profile cases include the National Kidney Foundation and Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre. The Singapore Buddhist Federation is also exploring possible disciplinary action that can be taken against former Ren Ci chief executive Ming Yi. http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC10...as-gone-missing

  14. China's nine-day traffic jam stretches 100km Thousands of vehicles were bogged down Monday in a more than 100-kilometre (62-mile) traffic jam leading to Beijing that has lasted nine days and highlights China's growing road congestion woes. The Beijing-Tibet expressway slowed to a crawl on August 14 due to a spike in traffic by cargo-bearing heavy trucks heading to the capital, and compounded by road maintenance work that began five days later, the Global Times said. The state-run newspaper said the jam between Beijing and Jining city had given birth to a mini-economy with local merchants capitalising on the stranded drivers' predicament by selling them water and food at inflated prices. (Hmm... idea ) That stretch of highway linking Beijing with the northern province of Hebei and the Inner Mongolia region has become increasingly prone to massive jams as the capital of more than 20 million people sucks in huge shipments of goods. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100823/sc_afp/chinaroadtraffic People, something to not complaint about !
  15. HE thought he had found love after spending 10 years in search of a bride through matchmaking agencies. Even when he learnt that the Vietnamese woman he chose to marry probably harboured feelings for an ex-lover, he continued to love her. When Mr David Quek, 39, a facilities manager, learnt his Vietnamese wife, Madam Kim Vui, 21, was pregnant, he looked forward to starting a family. But now, Mr Quek is in a quandary. His wife has returned to Ho Chi Minh City and is refusing to return. And not only has he probably lost his wife and unborn child, but he can't move on as it will be difficult for him to file for divorce. Mr Quek said he got to know Madam Kim in mid-April through Vietnam Brides International, a matchmaking agency in Orchard Plaza. 'When I met Kim Vui, I thought she looked sweet and simple,' said Mr Quek. She was nothing like some of the materialistic local women he had met through other dating agencies. They went on dinner dates a few times a week and Mr Quek was happy enough to take her home to meet his mother. His father died several years ago. The couple got married on 14 Jun. But their marital bliss was short-lived. Two weeks after they tied the knot, Mr Quek got an angry phone call from a man who claimed to be the husband of Madam Kim's friend. He told Mr Quek that Madam Kim had a 'husband' in Ho Chi Minh City and that the other man had asked Madam Kim's friend to get her to return to him. Shocked, Mr Quek confronted his wife. Madam Kim denied that she was married, but admitted that the 'husband' was actually her former lover. She said they were no longer together. Feeling cheated, Mr Quek took his wife back to the matchmaking agency on 29 Jun and demanded an explanation from its boss, Mr Mark Lin. He said: 'I was angry as my wife would be a bigamist if she was really married in Vietnam. I called Mark and scolded him for hiding my wife's complicated background from me.' Mr Lin denied deceiving Mr Quek, who had agreed to pay $7,000 in five instalments to have his marriage with Madam Kim arranged. He said: 'I trust the girls to be honest but if they want to lie, there's nothing I can do.' He also told Mr Quek that he should accept his wife's past if he really loved her. Mr Quek patched things up with his wife but two days later, she told him her parents wanted her to return to Ho Chi Minh City to attend to some family matters. So on 2 Jul, they flew to Ho Chi Minh City to visit her parents. They were supposed to return to Singapore on 5 Jul, but Madam Kim said she wanted to stay with her parents for a few more days, promising to return on 25 Jul. Mr Quek, who returned to Singapore on his own, said he did not think anything was wrong then. He said: 'I thought she was homesick and I thought she'd be happy if she could spend more time with her family.' Mr Quek described his wife as a simple woman who never asked him for money or shopped extravagantly. He said his wife called him every day to ask after him and to tell him she was fine. Then last Sunday, Madam Kim called to say she did not want to return to him. Mr Quek said: 'I was shocked. I told her, 'Please don't joke about such things.' I asked if she was unwell but she just wouldn't tell me why she wanted to stay in Vietnam.' Mr Quek believes his wife's ex-lover could be behind her decision to leave him. Showing us his handphone, he said: 'After I returned to Singapore, I received text messages in a mixture of Vietnamese and English, telling me to stay away from my wife.' The New Paper on Sunday was able to contact Madam Kim, who confirmed Mr Quek's worst fear. Speaking through her Mandarin-speaking Vietnamese friend, Miss Julie Tan, 22, Madam Kim said she had come to Singapore to try to forget her ex. Miss Tan said: 'But after the marriage, she realised she couldn't forget her ex even though Mr Quek is good to her.' Mr Quek then tried to get the Singapore consulate in Ho Chi Minh City to help convince his wife to come back, but she was adamant about staying. When asked what he plans to do now, Mr Quek said he would take time to consider his options. Uncertain about future He sighed: 'Whether I divorce her or not, I don't know if I'll get to see my child. 'I guess I'm just suay (Hokkien for unlucky). Other men have happy lives with their Vietnamese wives but I'm unfortunate to be in this situation.' He added: 'She's carrying my child but if she doesn't return and chooses to abort the foetus, I can't stop her too.' Mr Quek plans to visit a free legal clinic to seek advice on what to do. If he fails to convince Madam Kim to return, it will also be difficult for him to move on. The Women's Charter states that no divorces can be filed until a couple have been married for three years. Lawyer Nicholas Cheong said Mr Quek can still file for divorce if he can show he has suffered exceptional hardship from his wife's departure. But Mr Cheong also pointed out that it would be difficult for Mr Quek to make a clean break from his wife as she's pregnant. He said: 'She's entitled to ask for maintenance for their child though she left him. As the father, Mr Quek is obliged to support the child.' Mr Lin has told Mr Quek that he will waive the remaining instalment of $1,000 if Madam Kim still refuses to return.'My job is done once the marriage is solemnised. I introduce the girls to customers but I certainly don't guarantee successful marriages,' said Mr Lin.
  16. Do you think gahment's policy for vehicle is a little too optimistic? I think you all should know that the gov set veh population growth to be at 1.5% per annum. Do you think this value is a little too aggressive or too optimistic considering the jam we are facing daily? Although there is work done to improve road system, I don't think LTA can accurately predict the results of these improvements. It may increase car handling capacity by 20-50% or more but no one knows for sure till its completed and we see the results. http://www.lta.gov.sg/corp_info/doc/MVP01-...0by%20type).pdf Stats taken from LTA website shown that we have close to 600K car on the road. 1.5% is ~9K..... thats quite a big number esp. when you consider that distribution of veh is not even. This increase is not distributed evenly to all the road but some roads (esp. highways) will see more increase than other roads esp. during peak hours. And we have yet to include other vehicles. I am just wondering if our road systems (even when upgraded) can handle this annual increase. If you think of 10yrs from now, there will by close to 100K more cars on the road. Do we even have enough parking lots to cater for these cars.... Thus I feel it will a matter of time because gov has to reduce the coe till growth is negative in order to reduce no. of vehicles on the road. IMHO, ERP can only solve the problem to a certain extend, if there are way too many cars on the road, no matter how much you increase ERP, there will still be jams.

  19. What do you think of this idea. All cars much come with forward sensors. If you are keeping too close to the car in front of you, it will sound. Then you know you should slow down and keep a bigger distance.
  20. Went down to 2 Nokia service centres. One at Parkway and the other at Century Square and found out that both are no longer in operations. Only the one at Vivio and Causeway are open. 21. To become perhaps the 1st ever female prime minister or president of SG? Since she has done so many good things in her life, I am sure she is blessed and assuming there is such thing as reincarnation (I also don't know if have or not), Perhaps she will be reborn into a Singapore family and become the 1st female leader of SG in the future? Its like continuing her husband's legacy......
  22. I just feel yucky whenever this advert comes on. Why don't they use native speakers? Imagine how it will sound with singlish?
  23. I realised that my tyres are manufactured way back in 2005!! It still have quite a bit of thread left but wet handling is rather poor esp. when cornering and braking. The front tends to lock up. How much life do you think I have in my tyres before I need to change them? Then I am thinking of changing to Federal 595 tyres. Read good reviews about them except for tyre noise which is ok with me. Btw, is staggered config recommended? Thinking of running 225/40/18 for fronts and 255/35/18 for rears. My car is 4WD but I want to make sure I have good rear grip so it won't fish take or spin out under hard cornering. Do you think its a good idea?
