  1. I was looking at the Land Rover Owners Singapore facebook page and saw this: https://www.facebook.com/LandRoverOwnersSingapore/photos/a.1482539485294196.1073741829.1481376688743809/1946046702276803/?type=3&theater A land-rover registered with a WDxxxx plate. I know some very old land rovers has the WAxxxx plate. But I thought that scheme was discontinued? I read further a PDF document from LTA's website. Realized that this guy registered his Land Rover as an "engineering plant". As a result, it's exempt from both COE and ARF. Furthermore, can sneak into Malaysia due to similarity with Kuala Lumpur plates. Genius or what ?!??!
  2. How can our MCF Goddess be without a thread of her own???? @babyblade, Demon delicate a thread for you. You want to come here and ask about "BF"? or whatever float? Anyone wants to ask Babyblade anything, come and ask her. And yes, I needed some NTUC vouchers badly, and need to create threads because I want to talk myself.
  3. I read through the AMA thread, and I still don't understand why it is locked. It is a thread created in lite & ezi, so is there a need to get too serious over it? Are the exchanges in there really so far off or are ppl just acting noble? If there can be a Jason tiko thread, why can't there be some less formal small talks in the forum? I notice that almost all the time, if not most of the time, @chryst kept herself to one thread, the AMA thread. All the talks were confined to one thread which was dedicated to her. I don't see her running all over the place and OT in every or many threads (i think some old birds are worse). So whats the big deal? There are so many topics in mcf, select those you are interested in and participate there, leave those "too low class" topics to ppl who share a common interest in to have a fair share of the forum. So, @chryst, come here, this is a new home for you.

  7. Business Times - 01 Mar 2012 Sentosa Cove bungalow fetches record $39m Buyer from India is said to be involved in the resources sector By KALPANA RASHIWALA IN the latest sign of a revival in the high-end bungalow market, a seafronting bungalow at Cove Drive has changed hands at $39 million, a record absolute price for a bungalow in the upscale waterfront residential district of Sentosa Cove. This surpasses the previous high of $36 million for a bungalow on Paradise Island that was transacted in 2010. That worked out to $2,403 per square foot (psf) on land area of 14,983 sq ft for the waterway-facing property. In the latest deal at Cove Drive, the price works out to $2,448 psf based on the land area of 15,929 sq ft. The property is understood to have been sold by a Singaporean to a buyer from India who is said to be involved in the resources sector. The completed bungalow includes five bedrooms, a spacious living area and an entertainment room. Newsman Realty represented the seller. Residential properties on Sentosa Cove have 99-year leasehold tenure. On mainland Singapore, too, talk in the market is that another headline-grabbing price may be set in a Good Class Bungalow Area (GCBA) involving a vacant plot at Jervois Hill. The agreed price is said to be $31 million or about $2,050 psf based on the freehold site's land area of around 15,120 sq ft. A Singaporean investor is thought to have entered a deal to sell the land to a party who is said to have paid a higher-than-normal option deposit. The deal also involves a completion period of one year - longer than the usual three months. Word on the street is that the buyer will be applying to become a Singapore citizen. Purchases of landed homes on mainland Singapore by foreigners (including permanent residents) is restricted. Such buyers have to obtain permission from the Land Dealings (Approval) Unit or LDAU. Applicants have to fulfil certain criteria before permission is granted, including being a Singapore PR and making significant economic contribution to the country. Sentosa Cove is the only place in Singapore where non-PR foreigners may buy a landed home, though still subject to LDAU approval. A foreigner (including a PR) may own only one landed home in Singapore (including Sentosa Cove) and this must be used for own occupation. The land area for the property must not exceed 15,000 sq ft. Property market watchers say the $2,050 psf for the Jervois plot is a new high for the area. 'That's the kind of pricing one would expect in the Nassim and Dalvey areas,' said a seasoned GCB agent. Last week, BT reported that motoring tycoon Peter Kwee had sold a vacant plot of about 23,920 sq ft at Nassim Road for about $47.8 million or $2,000 psf. The psf record price for a GCBA is held by 6 Chatsworth Road, which transacted at $2,081 psf in July last year. This slightly surpassed the previous record of $2,038 psf for 16 Cluny Road set in February 2011. That deal in turn broke the previous high of $1,899 psf for 32H Nassim Road in October 2007. However, the Chatsworth bungalow and 32H Nassim Road have smaller land areas than the typical minimum GCB plot size of 15,069.50 sq ft. When GCBAs were gazetted in 1980, they included some smaller existing sites. These are still considered GCBs as they would be bound by the other GCB planning rules if they were to be redeveloped. For instance, such plots cannot be further sub-divided. Another recent GCBA deal is at Wilby Road, where an old two-storey bungalow sold for $15.2 million or $1,093 psf. The site area is 13,906 sq ft. RealStar Premier Group represented the buyer. Other recent bungalow deals outside GCBAs are said to include a property at Jalan Arnap in the prime One Tree Hill locale, which fetched $12.5 million or about $1,710 psf based on land area of about 7,300 sq ft. On site is an over 30-year-old bungalow. At Jalan Jambu Ayer in the Binjai Park area, an old bungalow on a rectangular plot with land area of about 7,212 sq ft and wide frontage of about 17 metres is understood to have changed hands recently for $9 million or about $1,248 psf. At Sunset View in the Clementi area, RealStar brokered the sale of a freehold bungalow for $7.5 million or $1,190 psf based on land area of 6,302 sq ft. After an initial knee-jerk reaction to the introduction of the additional buyer's stamp duty (ABSD) that took effect on Dec 8, house hunters have started to return to the bungalow market since the Chinese New Year period. On Sentosa Cove, Newsman Realty managing director KH Tan said foreign interest is returning, with potential buyers from places like China, Indonesia and India. 'They come from a range of backgrounds, including, industrialists (eg in the coal-mining industry) and even developers from China. Some have children studying in Singapore while others find Singapore an interesting global city. They believe there's room for substantial price appreciation in Singapore bungalow prices.' On the GCB front, Coldwell Banker Realtors managing director Alexs Chua said although transaction volumes have slipped, transacted prices are generally holding well. 'Some sellers are revising their prices now - not because prices are set to fall but rather they have realised they had overpriced right from the start. In the prime GCB locations such as Nassim, Dalvey or Tanglin, sellers would rather withdraw their properties from the market than lower their prices. 'However, in the less prime GCB estates where demand is not as strong, some sellers have adjusted their asking prices and usually these are the motivated ones. Those who don't need to sell their GCBs acknowledge that this is not exactly the best time to do so,' he added. Under the ABSD regime, PRs pay 3 per cent ABSD on their second and subsequent residential property while Singaporeans pay the same ABSD rate on their third and subsequent residential property. Foreigners, however, must pay 10 per cent ABSD on any residential property purchased in Singapore.

Mr Gan told Parliament on Tuesday that this accounted for 136,000 bills, outstanding for two months or more. In a written reply, Mr Gan said 83 per cent of the outstanding bills were incurred by Singaporean patients.[/u] He said a significant part of arrears are eventually recovered or paid over time, but a portion will still become bad debt and has to be written off. In 2010, $37 million was written off - this was up from the $26 million written off the year before. Mr Gan said hospitals will send patients a reminder if they do not settle their bills. If there is no response, hospitals may refer the case to an authorised debt collection agency. If a patient says that he or she has problems paying, the hospital will explore options for financial help such as instalment payments or Medifund assistance.

  14. The GRC which her estate is in is anchored by two heavy-weight cabinet ministers. Maybe it will finally be cleaned when the ministers conduct a visit? In any case, littering is quite a worrying issue in HDB estates and you can see cleaners doing their daily work clearing lift lobbies of bulky disued furnitures, fridges, etc and sweeping away tissues, sweet wrappers, ciggy butts, etc around blocks. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_771293.html Slow to clean in this heartland block Published on Feb 28, 2012 WHILE I support and applaud the recent raise in salaries for cleaners in PAP town councils ('Town council cleaners get more pay now'; last Tuesday), I am dismayed by the state of my block of flats managed by the Sembawang Town Council. The littered corridors are often unswept and not cleaned; and strewn often with paper, fliers, cigarette butts and sweet wrappers, which are left there for days. Unfinished drinks and cup noodles left on staircases are uncleared for just as long and are equally a common sight. Certainly, uncivic residents - and non-residents - should be held to account but there is also no reason for trash and litter to be left uncleared for days, and sometimes for as long as a week. When I expressed my concerns to the town council, the reply was that the corridors of each floor should be swept daily. Apparently, that did not include my block. The council employee promised me that she would inform the town council management. But, one year later, the situation has not improved. Neighbourhood cleanliness should rank higher in the council's priorities. Lim Suyin (Ms)

  17. My family and I ski at least once a year in Whistle where the crowd is still acceptable for those who ski, this may save your life How to survive an avalanche? Spit, expert says King County Sheriff's Department officers and other emergency officials work along Highway 2 at the Stevens Pass ski area near Skykomish, Wash., near where three skiers were killed in an avalanche Sunday. (Associated Press / The Seattle Times, Erika Schultz) By Rene Lynch February 21, 2012, 5:00 a.m. Spit could mean the difference between life and death if you are ever caught in an avalanche, an expert says. Avalanches are rare -- but deadly. Every second is critical to survival, as is keeping calm in the face of calamity. But that's not easy to do in the face of a terrifying, blinding slide that has the ability to blanket victims in snow and ultimately smother them. After of a weekend avalanche that claimed the lives of three skiers in Washington state, we asked John Snook, avalanche forecaster for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, what you should do if you find yourself facing one. At the first sign of an avalanche, he suggests thrashing around as if your life depends upon it -- because it does. Thrashing, or "swimming," can help you stay atop the slide and the snow, making survival more likely, he said Monday. If you are being enveloped by snow, do your best to keep one arm straight above your head. This serves two purposes. It can help you figure out up from down, which is not always possible if you've been tossed around and become disoriented, Snook told The Times. And, if you're lucky, your gloved hand could be sticking up above the snow to help rescuers find you. With your other hand, Snook said, try your best to create an air pocket in front of your face before the snow becomes too compacted. People buried in avalanches smother, so an air pocket could provide you with enough air to survive until help arrives, he said. An air pocket can also make room for this trick: If you're stuck in the snow and you can't tell up from down, spit. Gravity will tell you which direction to move -- assuming that you can move. The best way to avoid an avalanche is to take precautions from the get-go. "Every mountain in the West has a local avalanche center," he said. Every snow adventurer should be versed in the weather forecast, the snowpack conditions and the avalanche danger rating before venturing out for the day. Consult the forecast, research the area that you're planning to traverse and, most important, don't allow skiers' "powder fever" to overrule your better judgment, he said. When traveling in avalanche-prone areas, don't move together as a pack. Each skier or snowboarder should navigate the stretch ahead alone. That way, if disaster strikes, survivors can alert rescuers to the victim's whereabouts. Everyone trekking into the snowy wilderness -- snowboarders, skiers, snowmobilers -- should be carrying an avalanche survival kit containing a snow shovel, a beacon that is worn on the body, and a probe. High-tech probes work hand-in-hand with the beacon to locate a victim and can even poke air holes in the snow to help victims breathe until they can be rescued. "The whole idea is to just buy yourself some time until help can arrive," he said. A relatively new device, a flotation air bag, can be deployed in the case of an avalanche. It's being credited with saving the life of one of the skiers, Elyse Staugstad, who was also caught in Sunday's deadly slide. Snook said he is a fan of the flotation air bag. But, he said, "We fear it will give people a false sense of security." Snook also suggests that adventurers understand the basics of avalanches, and use such information for their safety. For example, avalanches cannot occur on slopes that are less than 25 to 30 degrees. When plotting out routes, such knowledge can add an extra cushion of safety so that outdoors lovers can focus on safely getting to their destination instead of courting danger along the way. Also, adventurers should know this counterintuitive fact: Less snow often means greater danger. Colorado, for example, has experienced a low-snow year. Those early layers of snow can make for a weak foundation. Ideally, the next layers of snow create heavier "slabs" that make for a solid layer. But if snow is light, the region can be more prone to slabs slipping and sliding and cracking above the poor foundation. "It's like trying to build a house with a deck of cards. Eventually that weak foundation fails," Snook said. "It's been particularly hazardous this year in Colorado. Probably the most dangerous snowpack we've had in 30 years." Typically, the people killed in avalanches are skiers or snowboarders. But snowmobilers are catching up, he said, because the machines are more powerful and durable than ever, enabling riders to go farther into the backwoods and higher on slopes. Snook said Sunday's avalanche especially hit home with him. He lost a friend to an avalanche last Thursday near Gibbs Creek and Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. "I'm trying to honor my friend by hopefully helping others," he said. So far, 17 people have died in avalanches this snow season. Last year, 36 people died in avalanches, according to the Colorado Avalanche information Center.

  19. From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...dicine_too.html Posted on 16 Feb 2012 Shouldn't LTA officer be fined too for stopping vehicle on double yellow zig-zag lines? STOMPer Amused thinks that a LTA traffic warden should be prosecuted too as he had committed a traffic offence while performing his duty. STOMPer Amused wrote: "Traffic Policemen are fair. They listen to you and try to understand your problems. "On the other hand, LTA traffic wardens behave as if they own the roads. They like to play god. "Those who are misfortunate enough to encounter them would know. "This photo was taken at 3.30pm on Feb 30 opposite Suntec City Tower Four. "I saw this 'hot pursuit' by a LTA traffic warden with siren and flashing lights on, just to intercept a car. LTA should have a record of this event. "Both vehicles came to a halt at the double yellow zig-zag lines. "A page from the Highway Code states, 'Double yellow zig-zag lines indicate No Stopping at all times on that side of the road where the lines are drawn.' "Therefore, the LTA traffic warden has broken a traffic rule. "So, dear Traffic Police, please do what you have to do! :)"

  21. Isn't it frustrating that there is no bluetooth app or shortcut to toggle the on/off switch. And you have to do the settings>general>bluetooth. I know Android have plenty of apps to do this. Now there's a way, follow the instructions in this link http://supersmartme.posterous.com/bluetoot...hone-homescreen. On your iphone type this on the homepage of safari http://brdrck.me/settings/ dan select the icons you want. It's free to install. If you have to pay means something is wrong somewhere. Maybe some savy IT ppl here already knew about this but nevermind, I'm sharing it for all those who is clueless like me who frequently use bluetooth to connect to the car's HU. Actually mine is not HU it's a Belkin hands free which can listen to mp3, mtv, gps navigation on the iphone http://www.belkin.com/sg/IWCatProductPage....oduct_Id=542721. I created a shortcut for bluetooth, wifi & hotspot which I use quite often. Credit goes to the guy who created this, Jeff Broderick.

  23. Despite all the bad publicity about FT and so on we do have some horrible locals too Woman visits dentist, ends up swallowing 3cm long needle Monday, Feb 13, 2012 YourHealth, AsiaOne Suffering from a toothache, a 23-year-old hotel employee went to a dentist, only to narrowly escape death from accidentally swallowing a 3cm long needle which almost punctured her small intestine. Ms Yang told Chinese daily Wanbao that she visited a dentist for a toothache in her left jaw. As the dentist said the decayed tooth could not be extracted immediately, the dentist used a 3cm long needle to clean the roots of her teeth. According to her, the dentist, who was not named, kept spraying medicated water into her mouth, which caused her to choke. She then sat up coughing, not realising the needle was still in her mouth. As a result, she swallowed the needle. Ms Yang said she strangely did not feel any pain at that time or any sensation of the needle stabbing her throat. She claims that the dentist did not take action to remedy the situation immediately, and only told her what had happened after a five minute discussion with his assistant. Shocked, she questioned whether there would be any danger to her life. The dentist then assured her that if the needle is naturally excreted, there would be no problem. However, he later advised her to get an X-ray. That night, she said she started to experience a sharp pain in her abdomen. Feeling uneasy, she went to the clinic the next day to complain. Accompanied by the clinic assistants, she went to a hospital for an X-ray, where they confirmed the presence of the needle in her small intestine. The hospital staff added that if the needle were to be allowed to be naturally excreted, it would pose the danger of puncturing the small intestine. Forever traumatised She was immediately sent for an emergency operation. She was hospitalised for three days and later took two weeks of medical leave. She spent a total of $4,000 in medical bills, borne by the clinic. Ms Yang from China claims the events left her traumatised and suffering from depression. "I only dared to tell my parents what had happened after the operation. Every time I think that I am still young, and uncertain whether there will be future side effects, my emotions will become unstable and I will become depressed," she said. She said she has been dealt such a blow that she keeps crying. Having loss her appetite, she also has lost 4kg and now only weighs 44kg. The surgery has also left her with three scars, with the largest being 7cm long. She has asked for $10,000 in compensation from the clinic. However, as the clinic is only willing to pay $8,000, the two sides are still negotiating. Ms Yang said she earns a basic salary of $600, and has to work overtime to hit a thousand dollars, the majority of which she sends home. Although she did not have to pay for her medical expenses, she wants compensation for the time taken for her recovery, as she could not earn overtime pay. She said she has asked for $10,000 as compensation for both her economic loss and mental trauma. The clinic at first offered to compensate $5,000, but later upped the amount to $8,000.
