  2. Heard it over 88.3FM radio this morning so decided to Google a bit and found the following interesting piece of scientific news: From Stuff: http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/8502191/Mens-...osome-is-doomed Men's sex chromosome is doomed! Last updated 08:06 03/04/2013 The poorly designed Y chromosome that makes men is degrading rapidly and will disappear, even if humans are still around. Evolutionary geneticist Jenny Graves says that while the process is likely to happen within the next five million years, it could have begun in some isolated groups. "As long as something came along it its stead, we would not even suspect without checking the chromosomes," she said on Tuesday. Professor Graves, who first made the prediction some years ago, was in Canberra to give a public lecture on the subject for the Australian Academy of Science. There have been dissenting research papers, but her prediction hasn't changed. "It's very bad news for all the men here," she told her audience. Professor Graves has been studying sex-determining genes in Australian animals to shed light on human genetics. "You would think that sex is so important it wouldn't change a lot. But it changes all over the place and the Y chromosome sort of self-destructs," she said. Y is always in the male and active mostly in the testes - making sperm. That is a "very dangerous" place because there's a lot of cell division going on, she says. With every split there's a chance for a mutation or gene loss. "The X chromosome is all alone in the male, but in the female it has a friend so it can swap bits and repair itself. If the Y gets a hit it's a downward spiral." The X has about 1000 genes left, too many relating to sex and intelligence, she says. The smaller Y started with about 1700 genes but only has 45 left, and that's mostly "junk". "It is a lovely example of what I call dumb design," she said. "It is an evolutionary accident." If humans don't become extinct, new sex-determining genes and chromosomes will evolve, maybe leading to the evolution of new hominid species. This had happened in the Japanese spiny rat, which had survived the loss of its Y, she said. Professor Graves is thinker-in-residence at Canberra University's Institute for Applied Ecology, a distinguished professor at the La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science, an ANU emeritus professor and University of Melbourne Professorial fellow.
  3. just checking you measure your 0-100 performance on the road. Was watching youtube and notice many used the speedometer (either video timed or hand timed), i recently realize that our speedometer can be faster by quite a bit as they factory always set it a bit higher (meaning it shows faster than it is)..so you time may look better. My car is almost 10km/hr difference at 100!!!!!! (verified with ODB sensor and GPS). For faster cars it maybe a fraction of a second difference, but for slower cars can make a 2 second difference (like mine slow Altis) I have tried GPS timing but its not very accurate as it can 'miss' the start. Now using ODBII sensor (android) and the times are very high..so maybe its the most accurate (ODB speed readings are different from what is shown on the speedometer. Now looking for program that can give acceleration curve. My car gear ratio means more zippy at low speed by really drag closer to 100. Anyone go another way of testing?
  4. i hope the justice is fair and the same treatment what amy cheong gets must be given to her.
  5. Looks like it's time for me to control my diet and slim down..... http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/hea...1249392/1/.html
  6. Recently, I have been feeling that the steering feel on the CSC5 is no longer crisp. Estimate about 20k mileage so far. Anyone on CSC5 has the same feeling about the steering response from the tyres when old?
  7. Hi all, Have not posted for a long while now. For the Superb, do we change the ATF at 60k? Or earlier? I have just checked with AD, and got a quote of about 600bucks for the ATF change Any workshops to recommend? Greatly appreciate your advice and hopefully with price info too, for reference. Cheers.
  8. motorbike... knock down a pedestrian... hope she/he is ok.. Note: I'm not the owner of the video... This is taken from Hardwarezone EDMW forum: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/eat-drin...an-4033569.html
  9. Hi, Lately, have observed that we have many lorries & trucks plying the highways epecially during peak hours (both morning & evening timing), where some of these truckes are zooming in & out of lanes dangerously... Maybe it is time for us to consider measure(s) like other countries?...where big trucks / lorries can only go onto highway during off-peak hours? Believe this can help to reduce traffic conjestions / accidents.
  10. I was reading about part time emplyment on MOM website. it seems like we have to pay part time workers paid sick leave, holiday, OT etc? All the while i tot part timer got work then got pay, no work no pay and pay is calcualated per hourly. simple as that? Are they entitled to CPF?
  11. I was told time off is under mgr's discretion. I need to visit dentist 3 times to complete a crowning procedure. My mgr keeps asking me to take MC but i told HER no MC is given for crowning. I just need to take time off to see the dentist as my dentist only work during office hrs. I have a time chit to show also. I think maybe she petty or stingy, came and told me time off is mgr discretion and wont be fair if i have to take 3 times. 3 times = 1 day already. those who r bosses/mgrs here, are you ok if ur employee needs to take time off to complete a procedure? its not like i take time off to bring my kid to see a doc. i also told her im ok to take MC but some docs dont give u MC but time chit because they dont see the need to. Whats wrong w her? I also said that time chit allows me to return work and my colleagues do not need to backup me for entire day.
  12. Anyone think this is reasonable? some think it is impossible how many actually on standby after working hours or over weekend?
  13. met this uncle who seems to be dreaming while driving... By the way, I am not scolding vulgarities but the number plate really is CB... Just like to highlight that the vehicles in the video appeared faster than in real life... Met this uncle driver while he was already at the traffic light so I really don't think I have done anything to him... (don't know how to insert the video)
  14. JSSL Arsenal Soccer School is looking for a part time administrator to work on weekends. 1) only open to females (as all the other admin staff are females) 2) only open to Singaporeans (dont want to give this lobang to FT) 3) able to commit on saturdays and sundays (8am-7pm) 4) outdoor working environment (NOT an office job) 5) basic admin work, but most of the time handling customers (parents of the kids) or potential customers 6) fluent in english, friendly, sporty, efficient, good with handling customers 7) Working venues include UWC East, Victoria Junior College, Tanglin Trust School, and the Floating Platform. 8 ) $10/hour A perfect part time job especially for students, who wish to earn a decent pay, and yet not interfere with their studies. However, I must say that your weekends will definitely be "burnt", due to work from 8am to 7pm. So I think it will be better if you have some sort of a passion for soccer, so at least you will enjoy what you are doing every weekend. For "unofficial" enquiries, for example, questions like "why is it only on weekends?", or "can males apply?", sms me at 97823647. For official enquires, contact Rina (Head Admin) at 63485780, or email [email protected]

  16. Fancy visiting a country and when about to return, the airline tells you your next flight home is in 2 week times....... Posted on 11 Sep 2012 Next flight in 2 weeks' time, Batavia Air tells 25 stranded travellers STOMPer Sarmadi was appalled when he and other passengers were told that the next Batavia Air flight from Bandung to Singapore was in two weeks' time. Said the STOMPer: "Just imagine after a five-day stay in an another country and you are just three hours away from going back home to Singapore and are about to check-in at the airport when they tell you, 'Sorry, there's no flight going back to Singapore as the aeroplane is under maintenance'. "The next question you ask is when is the next flight and when can you get back home. The answer given is two weeks from now. "That was what happened on the Sep 6 2012 at Bandung Airport departing to Singapore under Batavia Air. "And the staff said the next flight will be on Sep 20 -- either you wait or you can take your money (refund) back. "The next thing my family and I did was to quickly rush to AirAsia Booth to ask for seats back to Singapore. "Eventually they have and we asked the Batavia staff to top up whatever cost that was going to be added. "But the staff said 'No they don't practise this'. "After a long argument which involved around 25 people, they finally gave a suggestion for us to take their -three-hour bus journey and travel to Singapore from Jakarta by Lions Air. "Upon arrival at Jakarta, the Batavia staff who followed us said that there are no seats available. "In the end they booked for us AirAsia instead to go back to Singapore from Jakarta."
  17. I made use of autobacs free battery test and obtained the detailed print out reports. Over time, you can see the CCA of my battery dropping. With bro KB's advice, I have determined that my alternator charging is ok, but CCA is on the low side after 2 years. but it is still rated as "good battery". Battery details: 55B24R Brand: Trane Silver Battery. Cost: $102+ Rated: 520CCA (but initial battery test shows 570 CCA - quite POWER imho) You can see the 3 battery test reports below. Read from left to right, 1st report July 2010, then Dec 2011, then July 2012. Most recent test on the right. Will wait for bro KB and other battery experts to comment on the reports. For sharing purposes and to learn how to read the reports! And Finally, Thanks Autobacs!!!

  19. Hi all, Let's say i am buying a 2nd hand car tomorrow, can i buy the car under my name, put the insurer's name under my dad and the named driver as me? Point to note: i am currently unemployed but i will pay the car in full, my dad is working in overseas permanently and he will need to fly back to Singapore to sign the insurer form if he's allowed to. But if he can't, can i sign on his behalf using his name of course assuming i will have a photocopy of his identification documents? (which by the way, i assume an umemployed person will not be able to sign the insurer form using his/her own name) Thanks.
