  3. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1160642/1/.html Equal treatment for all full-time NSmen: Ng Eng Hen By S Ramesh | Posted: 20 October 2011 1618 hrs SINGAPORE: Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said his ministry is acutely aware that all full-time NSmen must be treated equally, regardless of their background. Dr Ng said the equal treatment for National Service (NS) has been and must remain a cardinal principle because without strict adherence to this fundamental tenet, the commitment to NS will be severely eroded and the institution of NS weakened. Replying to questions in Parliament on the disruption of NS by Dr Patrick Tan, the son of President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Dr Ng said the disruption was in accordance with prevailing policies to obtain his medical degree. In addition, a longer period was granted to those admitted to US medical schools. He assured Singaporeans that neither Dr Patrick Tan, nor any other individual who has disrupted their NS, was given any preferential treatment because of their "connections". Some allegations that Dr Patrick Tan had received preferential treatment were made during the Presidential Election campaign in August. Dr Ng said the policy to allow full-time national servicemen (NSFs) to disrupt for medical studies in Singapore dates back to 1973. Then, Singapore needed military doctors to serve in the Singapore Armed Forces, a policy which continues today for local medical graduates. From 1981, this policy was extended to allow NSFs to study medicine overseas because the number of local graduates was insufficient. From 1981 to 1986, 38 NSFs were disrupted to go overseas. This was further tightened in 1986 to take into account basic military training and their physical employment standards. Dr Ng said 86 applicants were disrupted under this scheme. Among them was Dr Patrick Tan, who went to the United States to study medicine in 1988. Then, he had completed his Basic Military Training and was halfway through Officer Cadet School. However, he added that from 1992, disruption for overseas medical studies was no longer allowed as the number of local medical graduates had met SAF's needs. Dr Ng explained that in the US, the medical course is a graduate programme, where students need a pre-medical degree. Thus, Dr Patrick Tan deferred his NS for a total of 12 years, for his premedical course from 1988 to 1992 and later for his combined medical degree and PhD in Stanford University's medical scientist training programme. He re-enlisted in 2000 after having obtained both his medical degree and PhD, and was deployed to the Defence Medical Research Institute (DMRI) in view of his training. Dr Ng also noted that other full-time NS men have been posted to DMRI before Dr Patrick Tan's posting. Dr Ng said: "There was no preferential treatment given to Patrick Tan, or any other individual who has disrupted, because of their 'connections'. Let me emphasise to all, including commanders on the ground, that no NS man should be accorded preferential treatment. "I would like to further assure Singaporeans that Mindef implements a policy of selective disruption for university studies fairly and openly, in accordance with existing criteria. "Mindef shall henceforth publish the list of all those disrupted for university (education) annually on a routine basis for public scrutiny." -CNA/ac

By the way, what will be a good time to drink? at night before sleeping (but i cant sleep after drinking), or drin at night a few hours before bed time? or drink in morning? After starting to drin for a few days, it seems that i am suffering less from mental fatigue.. usually no matter how early i sleep, i will feel damn tired the next day, mainly due to stress at work. Now still feel stress but at least not so tiring. Do u feel the same effect after drining chicen essence? Any nown side effects from prolong drining of chicken essence other than the higher cost?

  12. Hi to all fengshui experts. Any special ritual to conduct when entering your house for the first time? Like scattering rice grains/green peas etc. Any steps to follow or website to refer to? I tried to search but to no avail. Is there a difference between moving house and entering house for first time? Or such rituals need to be conducted only when moving house? When go and check for defects no need? Thanks alot for any help!

  17. Hi guys, Currently I am sourcing for my first car and has been doing some light research to improve my knowledge in this field. Have a few questions in mind and hope I can find my answer here (provided I post in the correct sub forum): 1. Is the depreciation calculation something like this: {(loan amt + [interest % per year * number of year loan]) - OMV} / 10? And can I say that the depreciation charges is basically the amount of money that I "lose" per year? 2. If I choose to scrap the car after says 3 years. I'll only be able to get back the OMV + whatever pro rated 7 years left of COE back in cash right? How would it compared to selling it to second hand car dealer? Do they have a different calculation on trading in price? 3. What are the major differences between a longer car loan vs a shorter car loan? I heard that longer car loan will resulted in lower resale price due to the embedded interest charges? Does it make a huge difference? 4. Any other area that I should familiarize myself with? Thanks in advance and have a nice day!
  18. Mdm Tan found a photo of her maid posing at a table full of beer. (Pic / Provided by reader) A domestic helper turned into a nightmare for Mdm Tan, 58, who is self-employed. Mdm Tan hired a 26-year-old maid on 9 February last year to help her with household chores in her private home. According to Mdm Tan, her maid did well at work initially but starting sneaking out late at night since last September. Suspicious, Mdm Tan answered her maid's phone one day and was shocked that the caller was asking for sex. She discovered that her maid had been wearing her daughter's shoes and borrowing her sister-in-law's branded handbags before heading out to Geylang to moonlight as a prostitute. Her maid ended up becoming pregnant. She already has three children back home and her husband had left her. Source: Shin Min Daily News, 18 July 2011. Click here for the Chinese version.

Dear all, apprecaite any bros out there who can advise the above mentioned cos looking at buying a new car with 10yr or 7 yrs loan but seems like it will take very much loking just to breakeven for car value and loan . target to scrap car b4 5yrs assume the following and figure are estimated. case 1: new car $80000, omv 24k, parf 13.5k, coe at 17k 10 yr = 80k x 2.8% x 10 yr =80k + 22400=102400 mthly =102400 / 120=854 total loan repaid=854 x 59mths=50386 scrapped value at 59 mths=parf 13.5 + coe (17k x 0.5)=22000 assume body abt 5k + 22k = 27k > am i right that scrapped value of car at 5 yr is onli 27k? if so, 102400 - 50386 - 27000 = 25014 I still have a outstanding loan of 25k at end of 5 yr if i took a 10 yr loan? case 2: used car (2 yr old car)drive for balance 35 mth b4 5 yr and took 3 yr loan buy at 55k, omv 24k, parf 13.5k , coe at 21k loan=55k x 3.18% x 3 yr=60247 mthly = 60247 / 35 mth =1721 scrapped value of car at 5 yr= parf 13.5k + coe (21k x 0.5) + 5k body =29000 >am i right that since scrapped value is 29k, the 3 yr will cost 60247-29k=31247 / 3 = 10415 yearly depre? really appreciate any kind advise thks.
  21. Hi all, I'm wondering what are the kind of jobs that you guys have done during teenage or even younger? By looking at the thread on median salary, can't help thinking that the younger generation is indeed luckier. Probably have more well to do parents and need not to slog hard to worry about schools fees and daily expenses. I remembered knocking at flats' doors selling biscuits after school, earning a daily income of just S$2. The most lucrative one is probably carrying the golf bags at sentosa golf course for the Japanese. Also worked part-time in Fast food chains as cashier, cigarettes factory as packer, nightclub as waiter, supermarket cashier, store clerk and etc. Time have changed and we are seeing more FTs fast taking up these jobs. I'm all for kids taking up part-time job not so much for the money these days but to let them expose earlier in handling real-life issues/situation, knowing how to interact with people and to realize the reality in life. Regards,
  22. hey bros, need some guidance :) thks in advance. My 1.5L (2007)coming to 5th(2012) yr Liao. Mileage 96K+. Major servicing is due soon. Is it a Good idea to change my ride n get a used car? New car prices are crazy due to COE. Cos my thinking is after 100k major servicing, subsequent servicing will be major. Cost some $$$. Is it saving some $$$ if I change my ride from 2008-10, mileage from 30-50K mileage? Servicing is cheaper in that sense. Had check with some dealer, sell off, I get at least $40K. Outstanding around $16k. Take back $24K. Using that to buy another ride. Still looking at 1.5L and below. Now interest is low as compared to my 2.5%. My concern is also to reduced my mnthly installment. But with low interest, still not possible to lower than now. My loan is 7yr for current ride. Then should I keep status quo? Should I itchy backside n change or wait till fully paid off my loan n drive for full 10 yrs but will spend some $$$ on maintenance. M In a dilemma. Or to some bro, very clear cut change or remains. Frankly speaking used car has it's limitation in terms of colour, model. I still love my ride. None is as good unless it's a conti car but I will not consider conti car for now due to higher $$.
  23. Any suggestions? How much the Tan Chong charge? Original better or other brands?
  24. For a season which promised so much, last night's AI finals was by far one of the worst in a long long time. Both singers had very poor dynamics, i.e. more or less the same volume throughout the song without any climax or quiets parts, the songs were poor and not engaging at all.....we had very good finals the past few years but yesterday was an utter disappointment.
