  1. I'm thinking of bringing my parents and kids (total 6 of us) for a short vacation in Dec. My parents are in their early/mid 80s, and my mother can only walk very slowly, and not too long distance. They are also scared of cold, so we're thinking of going to one of the Indochina countries, for maybe 3-5 days. (After we come back, we'll likely go for another trip maybe a week or so, to Korea, but without my parents, who cannot tahan the cold...) I'm not familiar with any of these countries, so am hoping that anyone here who is, can provide some advice on which of Bangkok, Cambodia, Vietnam is nice and easy to go around? Kids are in S2 and S4, so have outgrown the theme park stage. I know it's not easy for their interests to match nicely with the grandparents, but they're quite close, so should be able to accommodate/compromise a bit. Any advice or suggestion is welcomed - as i'm just starting to read up and find out on this. Thanks.
  2. If this has been posted or lurking in old thread apologies . . . . . SG Widow and China Tour Guide Asset Tussle . .. . http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/courts-crime/story/tussle-over-widows-40m-assets-turns-ugly-20140903 A seven-hour stand-off between an 87-year-old Singaporean widow and a 34-year-old woman from China ended yesterday after the younger woman agreed to leave the widow's $30 million bungalow, where she had stayed for a year without rent. It was the latest twist in a saga that began in 2008, after the widow, retired physiotherapist Chung Khin Chun, met the Chinese woman's tour guide husband while on holiday in China. The 40-year-old man, Mr Yang Yin, later got close to Madam Chung and, in 2009, moved into her Gerald Crescent bungalow, allegedly took over her assets worth $40 million and brought his family to live with him there. Madam Chung's niece, 60-year-old travel agency owner Hedy Mok, started court proceedings to revoke Mr Yang's guardianship of her aunt's $40 million assets earlier this year

  4. heard this news on the radio, so decided to search for the full story online... but only Straits Times and Channelnewsasia covered it the local tour guides, although many of them are free lancing, are badly treated by Singapore Tourism Board many foreigners, on S-passes, come here to moonlight as tour guides, charging cheaper fees and forcing our own local ones out of jobs despite years of complains, the situation does not improve the bogus foreign tour guides have no qualifications (the local ones need to go through 9 months of trainings) and they have limited knowledge of our country (sometimes providing wrong information to the tourists, eg saying we are the descendants of Merlion according to legends) of cos, the tour agencies play a part as they are usually the ones hiring the tour guides personally after listening to their plights, i feel it's a sad thing because - tour guides generally dun earn alot, and even so, they are being forced out of jobs by the bogus FTs - the authority is sleeping and not protecting the interests of the local tour guides - most importantly, tour guides are like unofficial ambassadors responsible in introducing our country, history and culture to the tourists... how can this role be taken by foreigners with limited knowledge? haiz...

Long distance relationships these days have been made more convenient thanks to air travel. Hadri arrived on the Thai border earlier this morning, updating followers via Instagram that his journey so far has been smooth sailing. Hadri’s friend and fellow car enthusiast Lim Wai Hong, wrote on his motoring Facebook page Hayashi86.com that the 34-year-old met his future wife in Germany back in 2007. The two were acquainted prior to that via the Internet and that the language barrier was never an issue. Two years later, Hadri flew back to Germany to see her and confessed his love for her with a stalk of rose and a letter. They have been together ever since and Hadri popped the question a few years later. “He wants to show his fiancée he is doing this for her and it’s how much he’s willing to sacrifice — it’s a beautiful story,” Lim told Malay Mail when contacted. On behalf of his friend, Lim added that Hadri’s father helped his son to plan the driving routes and calculate the petrol consumption and mileage required to complete the journey. The trip, christened The Retro Havoc Motorsport World Tour will also be promoting Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VM2020) at each destination during the expedition’s 98-day journey. can follow his instagram here https://www.instagram.com/ae86worldtour/
  6. wanna ask MCFer hiadees/hiabuays. My brother had a tour booked through NATAS that was cancelled. The tour company agreed to refund the deposit. He signed a paper with the company which states it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get his refund via reverse credit card entry which the bank will advise and update in his credit card account. 8 weeks had passed, nothing. Now brother is thinking of complaining to the relevant authorities. CASE as we know is toothless. Should be go to NATAS? anyone can advise or perhaps share similar experiences?

  9. No vampires or zombies, but plenty of sun, sand, and sea... And food galore too.. Being a seaside place, you can expect good seafood, but I also saw a few type of food that I have never seen before.. This one left the greatest impression! Looks like... well I will let you guys use your imaginations Of course, there's more regular stuff..
  10. What can you do if all you have is a few hours? Sit around the airport lounge? Or explore the city? What's there to see anyway? There are so many terms in to describe Turkey and Istanbul: The crossroad between the East and West, a smorgasbord of culture, the narrowest point between two continents of Europe and Asia.. and so much more Yet nothing quite prepares you for the sights, sounds and smells that confront you when you land. Yes there are kebabs and wraps. But it tastes so much better than those you find back home. Was that lamb or some other animal mixed together? Well if you eat well in the streets of Istanbul, you will have no such doubt. How about the ice cream? Sublime and if you get a fun loving vendor, he will toss, spin and twirl that cone playfully in front of your eyes. Then there is the history. So much has happened here which has affected the world and has found their way into our history books. Strife on a global scale, the rise and fall of empires, world wars, genocide and more. It is also a delicate powder keg of the major monistic faiths with mosques almost abutting the churches. In fact both faiths may have occupied the same building and I can't say there are too many other places where Islamic messages share the same space on the walls as mosaics of Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Such is the complexity here. Yet you do feel a little tension as you stand in Taxim square with so many people thronging the streets. Amongst them are crafty pickpockets, and it does take away the amazement when you have to keep watch on your wallet all the time. Ultimately you do surrender to the crowds and simply soak in the atmosphere, whilst trying to appreciate the history and beauty, sitting somewhere in the middle of the many wonderful cafes and watch the world go by with a delightful cup of coffee in your hand. I found this well reviewed guide company and they gave very good service, with a warm and friendly guide. https://www.dailyistanbultours.com/ Do take note: Take care of your belongings, especially in crowded places, as there are pickpockets and my own guide was pick pocketed actually. You do see many places used in the movies like Taken 2, James Bond, and many more.. truly amazing The Spice Bazaar: Turkish delights Spices The Hagia Sophia Plates which glow in the dark Grand Bazaar Kebabs:

  13. Hei Hei! Greetings from the land of the never-ending sun! Just sharing some tips, info and photos of my current trip :) Some basic info first: Helsinki Helsinki; Swedish: Helsingfors, is the capital and largest city of Finland. It is in the region of Uusimaa, located in southern Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. Helsinki has a population of 605,523, an urban population of 1,159,211 and a metropolitan population of 1,361,506. Some links to guides: http://www.fodors.com/world/europe/finland/helsinki https://www.lonelyplanet.com/finland/helsinki http://www.visithelsinki.fi/en/come/tourist-information The country of Finland is sandwiched between two larger powers, Sweden to the West and Russian to the right, and both nations have strong influences on this country. In fact the official second language here is Swedish, with signs showing both Finnish and Swedish. English is an optional third language, but many younger people are picking up this for commercial reasons. A basic summary of what’s good here: If you are here in winter, it’s a fabulous place to see the Northern Lights. The scenery is ok, but it’s best to combine it with other Scandinavian countries, as it is not the most exciting place to visit. Food is nice and it is not as expensive as Norway or Sweden (be prepared to spend $50 for two at Macs). If you like mountains, lakes and outdoors, it’s a nice place. It’s also a stepping stone to visit St Petersburg, Estonia and other Scandinavian places. Getting here involves a direct flight with Finnair, or you have to transit, eg from Frankfurt if you take SIA. Not the chpeatest place to visit, but it’s still cheaper than Norway by a large margin. Budget S$30-40 a meal if you do not want to eat Macs all the time. Or bring some cup noodles J Some basic travel tips: You can get a data only card for E7.9 or use roam planning from home. Food tends to be expensive but not as bad as the Scandinavian countries. The trams and buses are excellent and the people are very friendly. Most will speak some English . The city is not too big and a cab ride from the airport takes about 20 minutes and 40 Euros. Their public transportation system is superb, with trams, trains, and the metro. Add cabs and free bicycles in your hotel, it’s fantastic. The terrain is flat and easy to move around. One thing you will notice is how clean their trains are, with no rubbish, or graffiti. In fact you hardly notice any litter, unlike Singapore where despite the proliferation of rubbish bins every ten metres, you still see litter all over. Many hotels offer free bicycles for you to ride around: For such a small city, you have many travel options, and there are these toilets in the metro, where you press the flush system and it will not only flush but spray water out to wash your hands. But it requires some coordination otherwise you might do the wrong thing and end up washing your hands in the water used to flush the toilets! The trains also go out in to the region, and you buy a pass which covers the city or the regional pass, rather than a strictly by distance kind of system. Furthermore, you can get the Helsinki Card for unlimited travel and visits to the museums and other attractions. (https://www.helsinkicard.com/) The days are long here, and the skies never really get dark; this is what it looks like at 11pm: Of course when you visit a new place, you look out for the local food and it's not all fermented herring here.. This white perch is really awesome! The restaurant is floating on a lake: http://www.ravintolameripaviljonki.fi/ It also does nice desserts: And more food: For good oysters and seafood at the Kamppi Centre (which also has funky toilets): Fisken: http://www.fisken.fi/ This makes your regular fish and chip shop weep… and it wasn’t too expensive - < S$20 Plus great coffee too.

  15. Planning to do a self drive in Japan. Any bro here have experience with rental cars? I did some research, one of the recommended car rental is Times cars. http://www.timescar-rental.com/. Are there any other recommended car rental companies with help desk staffs that speak English. Secondly, understand the Garmin GPS doesn't have maps for Japan, so need to use the GPS provided by the rental car. And they use map codes or phone numbers to locate your destinations. Will be my first time using map codes, care to share your experience? I checked the map code here http://www.mapion.co.jp/, one of the draw back of using map codes is it doesn't give the exact location. Your destination could be off by 50-100m from the actual destination. Hence i'm a little worry here.

According to Chinese evening daily, Shin Min Daily News, the driver did not realise he had run over the man. It was also reported that the front and back wheels of his bus had run over the victim. The driver had also reversed over the man, but was unaware until a cleaner from a nearby condominium alerted him to stop.
  23. Although Melaka is just 200 over km away from Singapore. A day or two driving there to chill out, especially for food, is a hobby for many road tripper here. So I start this thread "again" to share, and will also want to gather some othe good recommendations bros here been before. At least we will have alternatives next time. I always visit this shop 天合成 ( Tian Hup Seng) to buy their Kuih Wangi and their white coffee. The folks love it. Recommeded. The most famous Capitol Satay Celup in Melaka. I will skip this the next visit. Not the standard like before anymore. Over rated, bad service, long Queue and sauce bad taste. Not recommended! One of my favorite restaurant in Melaka, the Porridge house.... Highly recommended.[attachment=68136:IMG_2036.jpg] 88cendol at Jonker, no pointcoming here again, the durian cendol is not like before anymore. Skip! The Hokkien Bah Kut Teh at Melaka Raya 2. Bros who always patronized Teochew BKT or elsewhere, try this BKT, the soft bone really best and the claypot live of pork leg is fantastic. But I think a little expensive. Recommended. And finally went for the last meal in Melaka before heading home. The Chinese Dim Sum buffet in Renaissance Hotel . Lot's of varities, eat till we feel like vomiting. This place is for quantity not quality. Not recommended.
  24. considering going to korea for holiday this year ... anyone had any good experience with any good travel agent to recommend ? ** i know NATAS show is next week ... but still hope to hear some good recommendations.
