Toyota earned 240,000 yen ($1,820) in net profit per unit during that time span last year. In contrast, Tesla raked in the equivalent of 1.26 million yen per vehicle during the same period. This discrepancy shows the limits of Toyota's "multi-solution" strategy that puts out gasoline vehicles alongside fuel cell and electric vehicles. The wide-ranging approach has exposed Toyota to a costlier business environment while Tesla has remained more insulated by its EV-focused lineup. During the nine months ended December 2022, Toyota's raw material costs increased 1.1 trillion yen compared with a year earlier. Toyota expects 210 billion yen in groupwide cost savings for the financial year ending March, but that number falls well short of offsetting the extra costs. The trend is particularly conspicuous in Toyota's North American operations, where it is normally easier to pass on higher costs to sticker prices compared with Japan. In the three quarters through December, Toyota earned 49.2 billion yen in operating profit in North America, a decline of roughly 450 billion yen from the year-earlier period. The company suffered an operating loss in that region during the October-December quarter. "The price hikes on vehicles haven't kept up" with increased material costs, said a manager. In Japan, an executive at a parts supplier in Aichi prefecture that works with Toyota expressed a sense of relief despite facing rising fuel expenses. "It looks like Toyota will pay for 70%-80% of it," said the executive. Toyota has been partly covering energy bills and material costs for suppliers since summer last year. The parts supplier in Aichi has successfully negotiated a deal with Toyota in which the automaker will shoulder most of the extra fuel costs. Covering fuel and material outlays for that number of suppliers is a highly cost intensive endeavor. Toyota looks to maintain its supply chain so that it can realize cost savings jointly with suppliers, though much of the scale comes from the fact that Toyota, the world's top-selling automaker, has adopted a strategy that spans roughly 50 models from gasoline vehicles to EVs. Because of that full-lineup business model, the higher costs have started to weigh on Toyota. The company's per-vehicle profit in April-December is down by 56,000 yen from a year earlier, while Tesla is up by the equivalent of 500,000 yen. Unlike Toyota's wide-ranging lineup, Tesla fields just four high-end models. Since 2021, Tesla has significantly expanded its production and sales volume, which improved the company's earning capacity. For the three quarters through December, Tesla earned the equivalent of 1.26 trillion yen in net profit, which is closing in on the 1.9 trillion yen Toyota generated during the same period. BYD, the Chinese maker of mass-market EVs, is earning between 190,000 yen to 200,000 yen per vehicle and is gaining on Toyota. Last year, BYD sold 1.86 million electrics, including plug-in hybrids, a volume that is up by a factor of 3.1. This momentum comes courtesy of BYD's vertical integration. The company manufactures automotive batteries in-house and controls a subsidiary that makes semiconductors. BYD is quickly expanding operations worldwide, the latest move being the launch of EV sales in Japan this January. Along with Tesla, BYD is steadily making a name for itself through its strong earning capacity. For Toyota to stage a comeback against the rivals, the company faces the immediate challenge of boosting production volume. Toyota plans to sell up to 10.6 million units this calendar year under the Toyota and Lexus brands. If Toyota achieves its production goals, it would be able to use its economy of scale to bring costs down while not missing out on sale opportunities. Raising prices on vehicles would likely become easier under this scenario. However, ramping up production is easier said than done. Toyota on Thursday said it plans to only make 9.1 million units this fiscal year, a downgrade of 100,000 units due to a semiconductor shortage. Toyota looks to respond by minimizing the number of semiconductors used per vehicle. For example, if each Lexus vehicle comes with just one keyless fob instead of two, that would free Toyota to manufacture roughly 100,000 extra vehicles. In addition, Toyota group company Aisin is redesigning transmissions and other components it produces. Aisin is adopting designs that can accommodate off-the-shelf semiconductors. This spring, Lexus will add the fully electric RZ to its lineup. Koji Sato, Toyota's incoming president, oversaw the development of the model. Toyota plans to expand its EV lineup, an approach that had been delayed by the company's multi-solution strategy.

The company plans to release an SUV version of the Century luxury model focused on the Japanese market, as well as a minivan under the Lexus brand that has sold well in China. Both are likely to be priced in the mid-10 million yen range to over 20 million yen (10 million yen equals $76,300). The Century SUV, which will be positioned above Toyota's current top-of-the-line SUV -- Land Cruiser -- will be launched in August or later. It is expected to be a hybrid vehicle based on the midsized Highlander series sold in North America. Production will be handled at the company's Tahara Plant in Aichi prefecture where Lexus vehicles are manufactured. The Century, launched in 1967, has been popular as a chauffeured car for Japan's imperial family, politicians and business owners. The price of the current Century, which was completely redesigned in 2018, is about 20 million yen. The new Century SUV is expected to be in at least the mid-10 million yen range. Toyota is likely to aim for sales to wealthy people overseas and for use as official vehicles. Lexus' first minivan, dubbed the LM, is likely to go on sale in Japan in the latter half of the fiscal year. The hybrid vehicle has been sold in China since 2020, where it is priced at about 1.16 million yuan to 1.46 million yuan ($171,000 to $215,000). Production of the LM will be transferred from subsidiary Toyota Auto Body's Inabe Plant in Mie prefecture to Toyota's Tahara Plant, as the company seems to want to refine product quality by relying on a plant that regularly handles Lexus. Behind Toyota's ultraluxury push is a desire to capture some of the global market dominated by British companies such as Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as well as to boost brand power. In the past, Toyota sold a limited run of the Lexus LFA sports car for 37.5 million yen, but the Century is currently its highest-grade offering among mass-produced cars for the Japanese market. Despite concerns about a global economic slowdown, appetite for luxury brands among the wealthy is strong, as evidenced by the recent earnings of French luxury brand LVMH. Its operating profit during those nine months was 575 million euros ($621 million at current rates), exceeding in just nine months the record profit of 389 million euros for the full year of 2021. The automaker's operating profit margin was 23%, and sales per unit was about 30 million yen. Operating profit per unit was just under 7 million yen, more than 30 times Toyota's figure of 200,000 yen during the same period. Although Toyota has a full lineup that includes everything from minivehicles to luxury cars, it believes it still has room to expand at the high end. As the cost of raw materials and wages go up, increasing gross profit per unit is likely to be an important strategy.

Tesla reported a $3.29 billion net profit in that quarter. Toyota earned 434.2 billion yen -- the equivalent of $3.15 billion based on the average exchange rate for the period of 138 yen to the dollar. Toyota's decline stemmed in part from extraordinary factors. The automaker is currently shouldering increased material and electricity costs for its suppliers. Higher materials costs, including such assistance to suppliers, pushed down quarterly operating profit by 450 billion yen ($3.07 billion), which was only partially offset by a 370 billion yen boost from a weak yen. It also booked one-time expenses of 96.9 billion yen from shutting down production in Russia. "The decreased profit in July-September does not equate to a decline in Toyota's actual earnings potential," said Kota Yuzawa at Goldman Sachs Japan. Toyota came out ahead in terms of operating profit, at the equivalent of $4.08 billion to Tesla's $3.69 billion. Still, Tesla has become one of the most profitable automakers in the world. Though its net profit fell short of Mercedes-Benz's in July-September, it outearned both BMW and Volkswagen. Its net profit margin came to 15% for the quarter. Tesla's success stems largely from the profitability of each of its cars. The Toyota group sold 2.62 million vehicles in the quarter, 7.6 times as many as Tesla's 344,000. But its net profit per vehicle came to around $1,200 -- just one-eighth of Tesla's $9,570. Investors have responded favorably to the gains, and the company's market capitalization was roughly triple Toyota's as of Monday at around $655 trillion. The gap is a result of the fundamentally different strategies pursued by the two automakers. Toyota offers a wide range of vehicles from gasoline-powered cars to hybrids, electrics and fuel-cell vehicles, and at a variety of sizes and price points. Meanwhile, Tesla has focused solely on EVs. The Model Y and Model 3 account for over 90% of its sales, which have nearly doubled in two years despite their relatively high price tags. Even the cheaper Model 3 starts at around $40,000 in the U.S. Confident in its strong brand appeal, Tesla has not hesitated to raise prices to pass on higher material costs to customers. It also started offering lucrative self-driving software as an add-on option ahead of rival automakers. "The biggest factor behind Tesla's profit growth is sales volume, then prices hikes and a rise in self-driving software sales," said Koji Endo at SBI Securities. Tesla has been installing so-called Giga Press casting machines to reduce the steps needed for assembly. In general, the use of such a machine could undercut quality but speed up mass-production. Teslas are also sold directly online in principle, a method that offers higher margins than selling via dealerships. Toyota's bZ4X electric vehicle. Boston Consulting Group in June said the share of EVs in global new car sales would reach 39% in 2030, upgrading the estimate it issued a year earlier by 11 points. The group cited tighter environmental regulations in the U.S. and Europe, lower costs and higher demand in revising the figure. Toyota has set the goal of selling 3.5 million EVs in 2030, but currently the bZ4X is its only mass-produced model. A top Toyota official said at an earnings briefing on Nov. 1 that the automaker is exploring other options for mass-producing EVs, while another betrayed a sense of urgency, saying, "We cannot lose out in EVs." Electric vehicles still face challenges. "In regions that are heavily reliant on fossil fuels, EVs are not the best solution to cutting carbon dioxide emissions," said a top Toyota official. Furthermore, charging infrastructure remains insufficient and further technological advances are needed.

Just purchased my mark x not too long ago... was reading online and realise that mark x beside standard oil change need to change rear axle oil... asked ex owner and he say he nv do that before. he also told me that his spark plug not changed since day 1 as can last 100k. Current milage is 115k. No wonder the car is very sluggish... now i thinking he prolly skip many other required maintenance for mark x... Was wondering any fellow X owner here can enlighten me and the estimation for the cost so that wont kana chop carrot. Thanks!

TL;DR: C-HR driver is unhappy cam car driver did not let him into lane, proceeds to brake-check, confront and attempt to cause accidents “When in the wrong, just continue heck care since already wrong once” a motto this crazy C-HR beng believes in. To get an idea of the madness involved, watch the following 3.5-minute clip: What started it From 0:55, we can see “King Ander” — as inscribed on the C-HR’s driver side window — wanting to switch into the cam car’s lane, since his lane is left-turn only. He’s already left a significant gap from the white Serena ahead, and doesn’t seem to have signalled right, since there are no flashes from his mirror-mounted indicators. The cam car driver is having none of “King Ander’s” entitlement, so he just drives on. Displeased, the C-HR encroaches into the cam car’s lane as an attempt at intimidation, to no avail. Just before approaching the junction, the C-HR finally turns on its right indicators. Seeing the road clear up ahead, it gives up trying to merge, driving straight on and squeezing out the cam car in the process. Tyrannical behaviour commences Not satisfied with getting ahead, the C-HR seizes the opportunity to “punish” the cam car, flooring it across some chevrons and abruptly cuts across 2 lanes, just to perform a double brake check. At least he remembered to use his signals this time. Having boxed the cam car in traffic, he gets out for a confrontation to act tough. Another angle of this beng’s mug taken by the cam car’s passenger, with profane gestures and all; certainly not behaviour befitting a king. Realising they have all sorts of incriminating evidence, he finally retreats to his car, but not before a final "dirty trick”. As the cam car switches lanes to distance itself, this tyrant attempts to force the cam car off the road right across 4 lanes beyond his own, before switching again to the next lane, all without signalling. All in, the 8 (at least) infractions included: Failure to signal intention (multiple) Failure to stay in lane Driving over chevrons Driving into an oncoming lane Brake-checking Stopping on a double zigzag Causing an obstruction Attempting to cause an accident Online reactions The majority of comments appear to condemn both parties, stating that the cam car driver was partly at fault for not giving way to “King Ander”, despite his lack of signalled intention early on. While in the minority, there were still a few condemning his actions.   10. Been a late comer to the EV era, I think this show hand / all-in moment is Toyota way of playing catch up (heh look here, I have everything ready ok!)... But the fact remain that they are quite far behind other big names from Europe, Korea and China. During the media briefing on battery EV strategies, Akio Toyoda shocked the automotive world by unveiling 15 fully electric concepts previewing future models of Toyota and Lexus. What must be the largest rollout of concept cars in history includes everything you can imagine, from city cars, sedans, SUVs of all shapes and sizes to pickups and sportscars. Some of them are based on existing models, but there are also several all-new vehicles based on the EV-dedicated e-TNGA architecture. The “showroom of the future” as Akio Toyoda called it, had a bunch of other EVs hiding behind the curtain. The lineup for the Lexus brand includes its first dedicated EV called the RZ which is the production version of the LF-Z Electrified concept. Then there is a sports battery EV that looks like the spiritual successor of the LF-A with an expected cruising range of over 700 km (435 miles) thanks to solid-state batteries, and an expected 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in the low 2-second range. Additionally, we saw full-size prototypes of a large SUV (Lexus Electrified SUV) and an unnamed Lexus-branded sporty sedan. The latter also appeared in hatchback form in the official renderings, alongside a 2+2 cabriolet featuring similar styling. Last but not least, Akio Toyoda showed us another series of models calling them “the diverse Toyota EVs”. These include commercial vehicles like an autonomous shuttle bus, a compact van designed for both business and leisure, and a versatile urban EV. The Compact Cruiser EV incorporates styling features from the FJ Cruiser in what could become an off-road-focused five-door EV. Next to it, there is Toyota’s first electric dual-cab pickup which appears to be similar to the Hilux or the Tacoma in terms of dimensions but gets modern design features inspired by the larger Tundra. The Small SU EV looks like an electric CH-R with a dynamic styling approach, while the Crossover EV is slightly larger and more subtle in terms of exterior design, likely previewing Toyota’s entry into the C-SUV segment. Finally, there is an EV sportscar with mid-engined proportions and a two-seater cabin which could become the future MR2 serving as Toyota’s treat for petrolheads. T.B.C.

As I have mentioned in a few threads here, China is the leader in EV development and many big names in the automotive industry are trying hard to form JV with some of these well establish EV manufacturers. And I vividly remember 1 MCFer even asked for 'China Talk' folder to be removed from the forum, wait till you see the motoring trend in the next 3 - 5 years... The current Toyota Harrier may still be fairly new to the Malaysian market (unless you count the myriad of grey imports that existed before UMW Toyota Motor’s offering), but the truth is third-generation SUV has been around since 2013 and in need of a replacement. Well, it looks like the forth-gen model is coming soon, and a promotional video has just surfaced on social media. It shows a car that draws much of its profile a fair bit of inspiration from the outgoing model, but with a couple of touches of its own. The characteristic blanked-off upper grille and slim headlights remain, but the latter now sport new LED daytime running lights with dual branches, much like the latest Avalon sedan. The lower grille is also much larger, reaching towards the upper grille and only separated by a full-width chrome strip. Along the side, the shoulder line sweeps upwards between the strong front and rear haunches, while the D-pillars have been made slightly narrower. But it’s the rear that’s the biggest departure – the full-width tail lights have been reduced to slits which, together with what appears to be a reverse-rake tail, gives the car more than a hint of the Jaguar F-Pace0 about it. According to Japanese automotive portal Best Car, the new Harrier, set to make its debut on June 17, will ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that underpins most of Toyota’s latest models – specifically the K variant (GA-K) that the Camry, RAV4 and aforementioned Avalon are also based on. It will reportedly be significantly larger than before, in part to accommodate an optional third row of seats. My reasons for doing so are: (1) I am a defensive driver (2) I love my car However, for this Toyota Noah driver, he does the exact opposite of what I would do: What Happened? An elderly Toyota Hiace driver woke up on a fine morning and decided to be a d!ck on the road by cutting off a Toyota Noah at a junction upon the traffic light turning green. (1 count of near collision) In response, the Noah driver tapped on his brakes repeatedly and even jam-braked at one point to avoid a collision with the van. At this point, the Noah driver was probably seeing red as he began driving aggressively, including overtaking the Hiace using a right-turn-only lane. Further down the road, both vehicles drove side by side (probably exchanging hand gestures and vulgarities) when the elderly Hiace driver decided to pull his stunt AGAIN - by cutting in front of the Noah driver once again. (2 counts of near collision) The obviously furious Toyota Noah driver retaliated by overtaking the Hiace from the left and cutting in front of it. (3 Counts of near collision) ANDDDDD....the Hiace performed exactly what the Noah driver did to him - by overtaking from the left and cutting in front of the Noah driver. (4 Counts of near collision) At last, both drivers' shenanigans ended when they stopped at a red light. However, the Toyota Noah driver alighted from his vehicle, walked brazenly towards the driver's side window of the Hiace, and gave it one good smack, jolting the elderly driver. In this case, it’s in the form of a Subaru Legacy with a driver that has shit for brains. Watch the viral video here: Crazy driver This minute and a half (ish) video starts by throwing us straight into the action. A Subaru Legacy with a roof pod comes charging in from the left side of the cam car and can be seen aggressively switching lanes. It then hits a car, loses control and comes to a halt at lane 1. Is there a profile for roof pods? I don’t know about you readers but most of my friends who are considering to install roof pods or already have roof pods installed are married men with kids. Roof pods can give your car an additional 300 to 600 litres of cargo space - Which is space you’ll need especially if you have children. And as you can see from a quick search on Google, some of them don’t come cheap. Really hope the driver’s children were not in the car though. When that happens, it is essential to turn on your hazard light and put up the reflective triangle sign to warn other motorists of the accident that is obstructing the road. Otherwise, this may happen: What Happened? The accident above occurred on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). A white car with a damaged bonnet that was involved in an accident earlier stopped on lane 2 of the expressway. The blur sotong driver of the white car left it without its hazard lights turned on, nor did he put up a reflective triangle sign behind his vehicle to warn other motorists of this obstruction. Instead, he stood on the centre divider helplessly while waiting for assistance to be rendered. Just then, an SMRT taxi, a Toyota Prius travelling in lane 2, failed to notice the stationary vehicle and rear-ended it forcefully. The rear-end impact was so great that the white car's boot burst open. And within seconds, a Toyota Sienta travelling behind the Prius failed to react in time and rear-ended the SMRT taxi. The chain collision caused smoke to be emitted from the vehicles and debris to be flunked around everywhere across the expressway. So this is why ladies and gentlemen, don't be a blur sotong. It’s been a while since we’ve had video footage of some serious road drama. Today’s incident definitely takes the cake. Watch the minute-long viral video here: What happened prior to the video? It is unclear from the caption as to what occurred before the video was recorded. But there must have been an inciting incident for this to take place. The lady can be seen ‘flipping the bird’ or ‘pointing the middle finger’ at the taxi driver at the start of the video. The taxi driver keeps his cool and starts driving off. The lady, however, decides to take a cheap shot at the Vellfire and gives it a kick.
