  1. Volkswagen has officially apologized for problems caused by its DSG gearboxes, in China. The German automaker acknowledges the issues related to the DQ200 7-speed dual dry clutch transmission and agreed to extend the warranty for these gearboxes to an unprecedented 10 years and 160,000km. Consumers have been reporting the problems faced with the DSG gearboxes since last year. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine's (AQSIQ) Defective Products Management Center sent a request to the automaker, urging them to come up with a solution since they worry that the faulty gearboxes might pose a hazard to the consumers. In response to the AQSIQ, VW implemented a software update to address the problem in Feb 2012, but refused to accept that the problem constituted a real safety risk. Local Volkswagen owners would be aware that Volkswagen Centre Singapore has also initiated a software update for the 7-speed DSG around the same period. In China, the 30 minute software update was installed on around 500,000 VW and Skoda vehicles but soon after having the update installed, the problems came back and to make things worse, new issues are also beginning to surface. A survey done by auto quality website 12365auto.com in early May found that VW's faulty DSG gearboxes remained the most complained about problem among automobile owners. Apparently, there is no permanent solution to the problem yet. From a personal experience, the software update with clutch adaptation has greatly reduced the juddering at low speed. But on the day I penned this article, I am beginning to feel it again. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
  2. [extract] Honda is a car manufacturer that has always been toying with the idea of CVT transmission. Back in 1995, the Japanese automaker introduced the Multimatic CVT gearbox in the EK Civics. Coming back to 2012, Honda has announced the development of a new CVT transmission for midsized vehicles that claims to improve fuel economy and driving performance. The new CVT is Honda
  3. [extract] When Chevrolet introduced the new Sonic (known as the Aveo in Singapore) with the 1.4-Liter turbocharged petrol engine, it was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Now, GM announced that it will be available with the option of a 6-speed automatic. This is good business strategy as not everyone prefers to switch gears by themselves.
  4. During the recent Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota showcased several of their models which were developed together with Gazoo Racing. Two of the vehicles were the GRMN Yaris and the GRMN iQ and both cars were forced induced. Many in the auto industry believed that Toyota is taking a giant leap into small-sized forced induced engines for their future cars. In recent years, Toyota has focused much of its engineering development in hybrid vehicles while many of its competitors are instead focusing on downsized, direct injection turbo engines (for e.g. Hyundai). Turbo engines may not offer the excellent urban fuel economy that hybrids offer. What they do offer is performance that buyers typically want and also better highway mileage. Plus, they are much cheaper to build compared to those complex hybrids. Toyota is lagging behind in next-generation direct fuel injection technology that offers more efficient ways in the mixture of air and fuel so as to provide a boost in both performance and mileage. Another key technology that Toyota is lagging behind is next-generation transmissions. Although they do have an eight-speed auto transmission in their luxury cars (e.g. Lexus LS) but many of their cars still uses a four-speed auto which many people see as an outdated item. There are rumours going around stating that the Japanese automaker has an intensive program for the development of direct fuel injection and small-sized turbocharged engines, with a possibility of them being used in the next few years. This will enable Toyota to keep up with other automakers. According to a recent report in a Japanese newspaper, the downsized direct injection turbo engine will begin to appear in domestic models first and as early as 2013. Toyota will then start to use them in emerging markets such as China. The next generation Toyota Corolla is cited to be the model that will most likely get the newly developed engine and also, there is a possibility that the Toyota Camry will feature the same engine too, without waiting for a full model change. Even though Toyota has current models which feature supercharged engines, we might see a change in this as small-sized direct injection, turbocharged engines are fast becoming the common choice for automakers today and this could further increase the competitiveness for Toyota
  5. Hyundai is developing a 10-speed automatic transmission for its Gensis and Equus models. The project is expected to be completed by 2014. Earlier this year, Hyundai had already introduced their new, in-house developed, 8-speed transmission. Mated to the 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan
  6. Hi i have the intention to change my jazz transmission fluid, myself. would like to seek advise on bro that have done it before. got my own CVTF but do no have jack stand to support, is it possible to find a kerk and lift up the lift the the passager side in order to reach the transmission drain plug. from youtube the process is easy but due to the small space in singapore, one is hard to DIY. call and ask a few workshop and they charge anything from $25 - 30. which i find it ex. as to only loose the drain plug and fill up the new fluid. Or bro out there got workshop to recommend and charge lower labour fee. thank for sharing
  7. [extract] Even though most automakers today have included 7 speed transmission (while some have 8 speed transmission) into their cars, most of the people I know drive a car that, at the most, comes with a 6 speed transmission. Recently, Hyundai Motors might suggest that they are moving towards the double digit 10-speed transmission as soon as the year 2014. Hyundai
  8. I used to run mine on a open pod but noted I had lost pick up speed (otherwise refer to low end powerband by most) since auto transmission does not upshift beyond 3000rpm for open pod to come into effect. Restored mine to stock airbox but looking for replcement soon since the old one is quite dirty. I heard of K&N and Hurricane filter but each has its own cons. I heard the Ninja V2 is quite good for auto transmiision and a combo between open pod and panel filter. Anyone tried that? Though I heard it is not a cheap option at nearly $400 per pc.
  9. any experts out there who can help me address this issue. i drive a 8year old lexus, mileage 113k. regularly serviced at 10k intervals. occasionally i get this engine malfunction yellow light on and jerky gear shifts, especially at low speeds. this seems to disappear after driving for a while. This issue has been happening for the past 6month-1year already. car is otherwise ok. 1) if i take it to the service workshop and this problem doesn't happen then, can those guys diagnose the problem? 2) if it is a serious fault, by now car would have broken down already rite? can any experts advise me?? many thanks
  10. Every morning i see a red puddle of oil on the floor. Looked at the bottom but visually cannot detect where the leak coming from. could be seal, could be gasket. anyone same experience? im topping up oil at the moment to monitor it. shd i get it repired asap?
  11. every morning, I find a patch of red oil on the floor under my car. suspect its the transmission oil cos I got a ws to replace it abt a month ago. Chk the transmission dip stake this morning n its just below the low point mark. what could Hv happened? oil leaking from the plug below? is there a gasket seal at the plug? mech did not replace any seal but just tightened back the old plug.
  12. Brudders of MCF, This morning I took a Sonata cab to work. The ride was quite bumpy with hard acceleration and hard braking...and then I discovered that the cabbie was actually using his left foot to accelrate and brake. To do this, he was sitting slightly pointing towards the right and was using the left leg to accelerate and decelerate the car? I was thinking possibly he has hurt his right leg and hence using his left leg to operate the cab, eventhough I think its really unsafe to do so. My question is - have anyone of you tried driving the car this way? It is impossible to drive a manual tranny this way, but auto car is possible as I found out today? Any experiences that u wish to share? Regards
  13. Just curious, just how many bros in MCF on auto-transmission will take the effort to shift their gear to N when coming to a halt at traffic light? I used to drive a manual car, hence it's kinda of a habit for me to put to N when waiting for traffic light to turn green. Any difference whether to shift to N or not?
  14. Hello need you guys advice, Current ride is 06 mazda 5, mileage is 72k km. Yesterday the "AT" light on my meter came on, got worried, reached home checked manual, it say "Auto Transmission axle" or something got error & request for it to be checked before more damage occurs. I restarted the car the "AT" light went off. Before the error sign came on, i notice sometimes when I moving from a stationary position say from traffic light. It would jerk bit before moving. Gear change on road is smooth no problem. I notice this problem came after I service at a well known car shop. My FC increases...then the gear thing came.last service was in late nov 10. - Did ATF fluid change (Not sure what fluid used as it states M-V fluid) - OWS multilight 5W-40 oil filter, drain plug, plug gasket, steering fluild etc. What is wrong & any good workshop to get it checked?
  15. According to a recent report, Mercedes is developing a nine-speed automatic transmission. Dubbed 9G-Tronic, the gearbox will offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions compared to the seven-speed 7G-Tronic. It will be used on large displacement engines and possibly debut on the redesigned 2012 S-Class. Going forward, Mercedes apparently believes nine gears is the maximum number of ratios that are technically possible. More importantly, the company thinks consumers won't accept a ten-speed unit. As you may recall, the 7G-Tronic was the first seven-speed automatic transmission when it was introduced in 2003. In recent years, it has been outclassed by the new 8-speed ZF transmission used by Audi and BMW. Source: autocar.co.uk

  17. Need help from all MCF bros. My car gearbox was breakdown in Malaysia last week , was being repair at gearbox specialist over there, was told that bearing is throw out need to replace bearing, but they can
  18. Folks, I'm just wondering if is possible to swap a compatible gear from a 4 speed gear transmission to a 5 speed gear transmission? Just wondering if is possible as my current ride is a 4 speed gear trans n seems like can see some probs surfacing thus have this taut of changing it.
  19. so happy, today changed my auto box transmission oil, now my car so butterly smooth................. just like driving on ice, shiok ar

  21. Hi, Anyone of you guys know about this grade of ATF? Is it the same as Dexron III?
  22. If there's a silver lining in the rash of unintended acceleration claims that have popped up against Toyota as of late, it's that manufacturers from around the world are beginning to think about incorporating brake override systems in their products. General Motors has just announced that all of its vehicles with automatic transmissions and electronic throttle control will boast an "enhanced smart pedal" by 2012. Essentially, the unit will reduce engine power in the event that both the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed simultaneously.
  23. like in HDB MSCP, shopping centre Carpark if stop on the upslope and brake to a standstill, once release the brake, will the car roll backwards before the accelator is pressed? Some of my friends car will roll back slowly, some will not roll back or move forward Is the car spoil if roll back slowly? any thoughts? thanks
