  8. As travel curbs ease, elderly foreigners resume retirement travel plans to Thailand PHUKET - With travel restrictions lifted in Thailand, foreigners who want to live out their golden years surrounded by tropical greenery and sunny beaches, or who need quality assisted living, are returning to the country. Provinces such as Chiang Mai and Phuket have long been the favourite destinations of expat retirees, but their move was disrupted due to the pandemic. With Thailand opening up, phones have been ringing off the hook and inquiries flooding the inboxes of several assisted living and aged care homes The Straits Times spoke to. ... Thailand frequently tops global rankings of retirement destinations around the world, based on indices such as cost of living, healthcare, activities and ease of visa applications. According to Nikkei Asia, the number of retirement visas issued jumped 30 per cent since 2014, with almost 80,000 issued in 2018. Foreign applicants must be aged 50 and above, and fulfil at least one of these requirements: have at least 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account, a monthly income of at least 65,000 baht, or an annual inflow or pension totalling at least 800,000 baht. Those on retirement visas cannot work and the passes must be renewed annually. The Thai government is hoping to attract wealthy foreigners, including retirees, through a new 10-year long-term resident visa programme approved by the Cabinet last month. https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/as-travel-eases-elderly-foreigners-resume-retirement-travel-plans-to-thailand
  9. First off to NTUC to stock up
  10. Last month I watched Steven's video Travelling during a pandemic and didn't think much of it. Firstly, because he's from the media so kinda duty-bound to travel. Secondly, no other "famous people" utilising the VTL. Thirdly, no one around me talking about it either so it's not relatable at all. I watched his video in envy though. Fast-forward a month later, Shane Pow, who was recently released from prison after having served his jail time for drink driving and signed on with Lee Nan Xing's talent management agency, is going to Germany as well for work! https://www.asiaone.com/entertainment/shane-pow-going-germany-pornsak-livestream-and-sell-things-vtl-mdada An influencer whom I follow has also just booked her trip via SIA to Europe for February 2022! And today, I got to know that two of my colleagues will be going on a trip to Paris next month for a short holiday! @Ragingbull And another will be going on a press trip to Europe as well. Just checked SIA and the cost is about 1K to Europe. Not sure how to book the VTL flights though. I don't think I'll be traveling anytime soon, at least not this year but I'm excited that the travel bug is back and gaining traction. It's only a matter of time before the rest of us overcome our post-pandemic travel anxiety and start seeing the world again. One major concern of mine other than COVID-19 is of course racism in Europe. Btw, this thread is for everyone who intends to move on from this pandemic. So the kpkb ones, don't la. There are other threads for you to scold the government ok? 💕 I miss the MCFers travel threads! @Ragingbull you know what to do!
  11. Since I left on 16th I had been to a town in Germany and then to Venice. Haven't got a chance to post much because these 2 places I went to the internet is horrendous both wifi in hotel and 3/4G. Now I really appreciate being in Bangkok and Singapore where the internet is easily available and fast too. I just arrived in Florence and is able to upload most of the stuff so I could post better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5zcD2vzSjI Immediately after arriving in Munich Airport, was whisked off to a small city/town of 18,000 people at the Austrian border. Drove about 1.5 hours. Arriving in the town went to a Bavarian lunch here Nice quiet restaurant Soups Vegetarian meal Very non-vegetarian meal lol

  13. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/fully-vaccinated-travellers-can-travel-to-germany-and-back-without-serving-shn Fully vaccinated Singapore residents can travel to Germany and back without having to serve stay-home notices (SHN) from Sept 8. They will instead have to undergo four Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, including one to be taken before the flight. It will be the first time residents can go for quarantine-free leisure travel since the Republic shuts its borders in March last year. The development comes after Singapore on Thursday (Aug 19) announced a new scheme in which it unilaterally opens it borders to vaccinated travellers from selected countries, starting with Germany and Brunei. With Germany already unilaterally opening its border to Singapore, those travelling on designated flights from Singapore will be able to fly to Germany and return without having to be quarantined. They will instead be subject to several Covid-19 tests and a short period of self-isolation, replacing quarantine requirements. TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  14. Personal and leisure travel will return from the second half of this year as borders reopen to tourists hungry to be free again and to reunite with families and friends, the director of the International Air Transport Association (Iata) said in an interview with The Straits Times. Mr Alexandre de Juniac said the recovery in business travel will be slower, and the actual volume of travel by the year end will still be low compared with the pre-Covid-19 period in 2019. "We will likely start seeing a change in the air travel landscape after May or June this year," he added. "We at Iata are already working with states to design and plan protocols and road maps for the reopening of borders." Singapore Airlines has been the first to officially announce that it will begin testing the Iata Travel Pass on flights from Singapore to London. Beginning Monday, passengers on that route using Apple iOS-enabled phones will be able to download the Travel Pass app and create a digital identification with their photo and passport information. https://www.straitstimes.com/business/economy/personal-travel-will-return-from-2nd-half-of-2021-iata-chief This will probably be the key driver for the vaccination take up rate. Humans will never stop wanting to travel. Being vaccinated does not guarantee you 100% immunity against the virus nor does it guarantee you will not cause the spread of the virus but I think the aviation industry, economies and people in general are getting desperate so we'll definitely be seeing more travel movements 2H onwards. Question is, will this cause another round of outbreaks? Is it really safe to travel so soon?

  16. I remember one of the happiest and most exciting time when I was a kid was when my parents bring us cycling at East Coast Park on weekends. The rush of speed and sense of adventure that the 2 wheels can bring. Nearly 4 decades later, I finally got myself a bicycle and it has been another adventure on 2 wheels for the last few months. First I rode around the estate, then to the next estate. 10km became 20km. 20 became 40. Before I knew it, I wanted to do a round the island. And round the island I did, alone, with my bicycle. It's about 125km if u ask. This article, I wish to provide some basic information to anyone who is interested in getting their first bicycle after a long long time and getting on the road to anywhere. I am not an expert but I have done some kilometeres on my bicycle the last few months. There are a wealth of information on bicycle and cycling by experts and people who knows much more on the net. I am sharing my personal experience of starting off on the bike for someone who started with zero knowledge. 1) Type of Bicycle Depending on who you ask, buying a bicycle can be as easy as buying an apple from NTUC or as complicated as buying a car. I will keep it simple here. Get a Hybrid. With all the different classifications of bikes, it seems a daunting task to choose one that suits your need. Thinking we are clever, we go google. Head explodes. Let me make it simple. Most of us will be planning to ride on the PCN, around the estate, try to stay off the road, on the pavement, sometimes on the grass patch. A hybrid is all you need. It is versatile and basic for beginners. You might want to move on to more specific types later on depending on your interest. Most people tends to gravitate towards Mountain Bike because they think it is the one bike fits all solution. It is not wrong but the way I see it, a hybrid makes more sense for beginner cyclist in SG. Everything else being equal, a hybrid is easier to ride with it's slimmer tyres and upright position. Tyre width of 32-40mm seems to be a good trade off between comfort and rolling resistant for a beginner. Most of the hybrids are 700c diameter. Which is sort of equilvalent to 29". 2) Brand / Price (it is not THAT expensive) After getting your first bike, there are 2 ways this could go. If you liked it, this will not be your last bike. If you don't like it, this will be your last bike. What I want to say is don't overspend on the first bike. You can pick up a Hybrid from NTUC and GIANT(the supermarket) for less than $300. I wouldn't advise. There are many affordable hybrids from reputable brands such as TREK, POLYGON, GIANT(not the supermarket), MERIDA etc. They will do bike fitting for you and some basic set up. You could get a very decent (but basic) bike for less than $1k. I am riding a Polygon Heist 2 which cost less than $600. You can see it here http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2705946-got-bicycle-will-travel/?p=6202970. I linked the OZ website because it has more details. SG dealer's website http://store.rodalink.com.sg/2016-heist-2.0-26/ Notice I don't talk much about bike weight. Many purists will see it as an important criteria. Even the ignorant will echo this sentiment. Light weight is good, if u intend to go really fast and far. For every Kg shaved, the cost goes up exponentially. Most of the bikes mentioned afore is in the range of 12-14kg. Not exactly light. I dun want to sound rude but with the rider, most of the weight penalty is the rider. In a way, a heavier bike makes u push harder thus losing the KGs faster. One stone, 2 birds. 3) Components The key word among enthuaist, professionals And the show-offs. Shimano, Shimano and more Shimanos. I have no doubts these are critical. But for a beginner, keep it simple. Entry level components will do the trick. 4) Accessories 2 words - 淘宝. Lights, bags, bells, bottle cages. Search 自行车, thats what they call it in China. Front lights - You can generalize under 2 categories a) To be seen - Increases your visibilty to other road users. Preferably blinking. Usually lower powered and small. B) To see ahead - This is where u start talking serious lumens. I dun recommend to get from taobao as my experience is that their power source is still unreliable. We dun really need a powerful front beam in SG riding but I need to admit I have a fetish for flashlights. A good flash light with high output, endurance and linear delivery will set u back $120 - $200. I am using a Bontrager 700 lumens. I like overkill. Frankly, 100lumens is sufficient for general riding in SG. Really. Back light - As a driver, I hate low vis cyclist. So I have at least 2 rear lights. Flashing to increase visibilty and non-flashing for others to easier judge my speed and path. I have another smaller one on my helmet as it is the highest point and most visible from far. Bike Computer - Not necessary but I like numbers. Cateye Velo wireless is a simple and robust unit. About $50+ including set up and installation. 5) Attire PT kit. Avoid shorts with too loose crotch as it can get caught on the seat front. Leave the spandex, clip ons to the professionals. You are not going that fast and far yet. Other than Taobao, Decathlon is a good place to pick up those stuffs. Helmet, glove, padded pants etc. Wear bright clothings, that is common sense. It gives you the excuse to wear that gaudy orange Tee or that shocking pink top you always wanted to release your inner Ah Lian. 6) Storage and Transport Again Taobao. Free standing bicycle racks. I have a pole mounted stand for 2 bikes. For transport, Saris bike rear bike rack. After some practics, i can mount the rack and 2 bikes with my missus in 6.5 minutes. Yes, bicycles can be a hassle to store in our pigeon hole but that is the way it is. 7) Make a plan, go somewhere. I live in Sembawang. Everywhere is far. It is no fun cycling in circles. I made plans to go somewhere. Semabwang beach - Yishun - Woodlands waterfront - Coney Island - Changi Village. Each time further, looping back via East Coast and town. Go somewhere, eat something. You will be surprised how much more u see on 2 wheels. 8) and finally, be safe and ride safe. Here are some of the latest guideline from the Gov. https://www.gov.sg/factually/content/how-are-we-keeping-our-footpaths-cycling-paths-and-roads-safe http://www.todayonline.com/lifestyle/laws-cyclists-ought-know Eventually, you might get on the road. It is faster and in a way, safer on certain stretches. Ride like the way you would want other riders to be when you drive. I hope all this will make it easier to get started on cycling for someone looking to do it. The main thing here is not to overthink about the bicycle and stuffs but to just get a bike and cycle the shit out of it. From there on, it will be another journey of discovery to your next bike.
  17. STB partners Trip.com Group to market Singapore as a travel destination SINGAPORE: The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is collaborating with travel services provider Trip.com Group to market Singapore as a travel destination. Announcing the three-year Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday (Nov 17), both parties said they will also customise and promote travel products, itineraries and experiences to cater to different types of travellers. These include free and independent travellers, leisure groups and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) visitors. It comes as Trip.com Group recently set up its international headquarters in Singapore, focusing on marketing, sales and research and development. The partnership will “leverage Trip.com Group's fast-growing global network as a leading international online travel services provider, as well as its ability to draw insights on travel behaviour and needs from its large user base”, they said in a joint news release. “As Singapore gradually and safely reopens our borders, this partnership will help drive the recovery of Singapore’s tourism sector as consumers look to travel in this new COVID-19 environment,” STB CEO Keith Tan said. “We look forward to safely welcoming visitors back to Singapore, to enjoy our great food, unique culture, beautiful parks and fun experiences.” This is the latest collaboration announced by STB, as Singapore gradually reopens its borders following restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, STB announced a partnership with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to promote travel between the two destinations, before the first flights begin under the Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble. MARKETING COLLABORATIONS, SHARING INSIGHTS The partnership between STB and Trip.com will cover areas such as marketing, data analytics and product and industry development, both parties said. This includes joint marketing campaigns to attract visitors to Singapore, which will focus on markets such as China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand. “STB and Trip.com will curate and deliver inspirational and engaging content via various media channels to showcase the Singapore destination story and to position Singapore as a safe and compelling destination of choice for travellers,” they said. The campaigns will be rolled out in phases based on their readiness to travel and prevailing travel policies. “STB and Trip.com Group will also exchange insights on key traveller segments and regional travel trends, with industry stakeholders in Singapore and key markets,” they added. “This is to equip them with useful insights that can help them reach out to consumers more effectively and to enhance the visitor experience in Singapore.” Trip.com Group’s chairman and co-founder James Liang said Singapore has “always been one of the most sought-after destination by global travellers”. He noted that searches for flights and hotels related to Singapore jumped 379 per cent within hours of the announcement on the easing of travel restrictions on visitors from mainland China. “As international travel resumes, we believe Singapore will be the first port-of-call for many international visitors and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work closely with STB to develop and grow Singapore’s standing as one of the top tourist destinations over the next few years,” Mr Liang said. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/stb-partners-trip-com-group-tourism-travel-13577678 time to look beyond 2020 and covid19.
  18. Most Airlines To Become Bankrupt Due To Covid-19, As Travel Restrictions & Cancellations Ground Planes source: https://mustsharenews.com/airlines-bankrupted-covid-19/ Aviation Consultancy Says Most Airlines To Be Bankrupt By End-May Unless Govts, Industries Help Them Among the range of businesses that have been affected by the Covid-19, airlines have probably been the worst hit. The increasingly severe travel advisories and restrictions that have been implemented by countries worldwide have caused airlines to cancel a massive amount of flights. That, added to the flight cancellations by customers, have caused what might be irreparable damage to profits. Now, an aviation consultant has confirmed that the damages suffered by airlines would be catastrophic, saying that the pandemic will bankrupt most airlines by the end of May. Airline bankruptcy will happen unless action is taken Sydney-based consultancy CAPA Centre for Aviation said in a statement on Monday (16 Mar) that unless world governments and the industry take action, most airlines worldwide will be bankrupt by the end of May, reported Bloomberg. Flight cancellations and travel restrictions have caused many planes to be grounded, and those that a still flying are half-empty — which leads to airlines’ cash reserves being drained rapidly, CAPA said. In fact, many airlines are probably already technically bankrupt or have breached their debt covenants in a large way, it added. Bloomberg also quoted CAPA as saying that government and industry action was needed, or: Airlines in dire straits, $161 billion in lost revenue predicted. Malaysia Airlines is one of the airlines that is facing bankruptcy due to the pandemic. Many airlines worldwide, like American Airlines and Qantas Airways, have cut their flights. Others like Sweden’s SAS have retrenched staff. European regional airline Flybe has already collapsed. The International Air Transport Association has predicted that airlines could lose as much as US$113 billion (S$161 billion) in lost revenue this year. It’s a no-win situation While we sympathise with the airlines, we also understand the need for travel restrictions and for people to cancel their travel plans. It’s truly a no-win situation for all. We hope that governments and the industry can provide much-needed help to our struggling airlines so they can stay on their feet till the pandemic is over.
  19. Mediacorp is producing period drama for the first time in 20 years. The story is set in the Ming Dynasty and based on the historical figure Li Shizhen. Out of the 30 episodes, 6 episodes is in the ancient setting. The production will fly to Hengdian to film in December, and slated for broadcast on Channel 8 in May 2020. Mediacorp may produce full fledged period drama again if the response of this show is good. https://www.zaobao.com.sg/zentertainment/movies-and-tv/story20191002-993825 Hope it won't be a flop

  21. First of all, I am a social responsible person, so I did not go against our government advice (traveling out of Singapore). And in case you are guessing I have been surfing those travel videos online, nope, I didn't. I went to these "countries" physically by car and a few on foot even. So how I did it? Maybe I should share which are the countries I have traveled to as a hint. They are: Australia Bermuda Canada Cyprus England Falkland Fiji Gibraltar Jamaica Kenya Malta New Zealand Nigeria Pakistan Saint Helena South Africa Sudan Does some of these countries sounds very familiar to you? OK time to reveal the answer. I just went to an area near to Sembawang Park this morning. As you can see from the map above, there are more than 20 roads which were named after countries or states, such as, Bermuda Road Canada Road Cyprus Road Falkland Road Fiji Road Gibraltar Crescent Jamaica Road Kenya Crescent Malta Crescent Pakistan Road Saint Helena Road Sudan Road Auckland Road (New Zealand) Canberra Road (Australia) Deptford Road (England) Durban Road (South Africa) Hobart Road (Australia) Lagos Circle (Nigeria) Montreal Road (Canada) Ottawa Road (Canada) Tasmania Road (Australia) Wellington Road (New Zealand) Thanks to a friend of mine who drove me around the estate. Btw, some of these roads out of bound to general public as they are classified as military related premises. To all seniors here, are there any other interesting place and road name in Singapore? I can't wait to learn more of them. Thank you.😉
  22. Took the new direct flight to Seattle. Picked up the car and drove to Whistler. Stayed there for 3 nights but I did not see ANY mountains at all because it was cloudy and snowing. The tours were also not open on mid Dec. Basically just play snow and idle in hotel Whistler Canada
