  1. The USD has fallen so much, it makes sense to visit the USA. Thinking of a road trip from SF to LV visiting Yosemite and Death Valley along the way. Then from LV to Grand Canyon and back to LV where I will dump the car for a flight to Chicago. Preliminary plan here. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp...4.27124&z=7 Anyone done something like this? I plan to stay in SF for 2 days, Yosemite for 2 days. 1 day in Lone Pine as a stopover before hitting Death Valley for 1 or 2 days (which is around 50C when I'm visiting) and then to LV.
  2. Need to take a break from work ..... Any good recommendation for 3D2N short "Road & Relax" (R & R) trip to MY. Places (shopping centres or resort) where recently open and with plenty of foods, shopping or beach areas. Target date : 21/06/2015 to 23/06/2015 Can do a combine trip with fellow members who wish to take a drive-cation also. Any new development in Kota Tinggi & Desaru areas suitable for 3D2N stays? Thanks.
  3. This is my blog landing page for a recent short family trip to Hong Kong and Macau. http://guitar123foodandtravel.blogspot.sg/p/hong-kong-and-macau-2015.html A very short trip, only 4 nights. We flew with FlyScoot (cheap fares but the timing isn't great). Upon arriving in HK, we had a quick breakfast at the airport and took the Citybus A21 into HK and stayed at Eaton Hotel, which is 380 Nathan Road. Over the 2 days, we had Tim Ho Wan (twice), Tsui Wah, Australian Dairy Company and some random food. We also visited Ocean Park and saw the Pandas. That was a very good day outing. We took the ferry to Macau and stayed at the Holiday Inn, Cotai Strip, for one Night. We didn't do very much in Macau, just walked around Cotai Strip. It was too rushed, so we decided against going to the old downtown Macau. Shrekfast at Holiday Inn was pretty cool. We took the ferry back to Hong Kong, stayed one night at the Regal Airport hotel, before taking the Scoot flight back to the Singapore. The plane was severely delayed. Plenty of videos and some pictures on my blog, for your reference. Hope it is helpful for other tourists.
  4. As some of you know, i have just returned from Tokyo after visiting the Tokyo Auto Salon and part of my visit, i dropped by a couple of Tokyo car meets as well as a very unique showroom. On the day i landed, the first location on my schedule was Bingo Sports. Original link (For better quality images because MCF does not allow me to use best quality image file extension): https://garage36.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/tokyo-auto-otaku-2015-bingo-sports-the-showroom-of-dreams/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have ever lusted over a Supercar, you’ll probably find it here one day or another. This is the showroom of dreams, this is Bingo Sports. I’ve been following Bingo Sports for a short while on Facebook and since i was in Tokyo, i decided to drop by for a visit. Little did i know what was to be in store for me after my trek there. (And getting slightly lost along the way after stepping onto the wrong train - you tend to do silly things with lack of sleep :P ) The showroom glowed red as i approached and the immediate sight of a Ferrari Daytona took my breath away for this Prancing Horse had always been one of my childhood crushes ever since i had a 1/24 scaled Bburago of one of these… …so the sight of not just one but two of these beautifully sculpted Ferraris totally floored me. Pictures totally fail to do justice to how lovely it is to behold. The long bonnet flowing down into the cabin and pulling up and curving inwards around the rear quarter panels. So very beautiful, so very exquisite. My heart palpitations becoming more and more noticeable as i soak in the atmosphere of this Italian beauty. Exposed rivets, leather tie-downs. Lovely. I think i can pretty much just cry right now just imagining how it must have sounded when it tore down racetracks generations ago. The Daytonas were in good company, paired with a 288 GTO Evoluzione, one of five Worldwide, and an F40 LM. Another unicorn of mine. A blue 512Bb also sat behind the four Redheads. These cars are what dreams are made of. Sharing space with the Ferraris that night was a Porsche Carrera GT and a Pagani Zonda R. Look at the gorgeous carbon weaving. An extremely special car, though i kept finding myself being drawn back to the 365 GTB/4s. I would have wished to have taken more pictures to share but i was advised to keep photography to a minimum. Personally, just seeing the Daytonas in the flesh was pure magic and something i will remember for years to come.
  5. Right after Bingo Sports i headed towards Roppongi for RWB. Oh yes, I am starting a new thread for each location because if i didn't, ppl's data plans will cheebaboom if everything was on a single thread due to the sheer number of images coming up in the upcoming posts. Prease understands. Thanks you. Original link for best quality images: https://garage36.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/tokyo-auto-otaku-2015-roppongiwb/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With the Tokyo Auto Salon right around the corner, my first day upon landing into Tokyo turned out to be a rather busy and tiring day, with places to go and meets to attend packed so close together on my schedule, i really only had my first meal of the day during dinner time, at a lovely burger joint called, The 3rd Burger. I’ll go slightly more in depth on the burg later but let’s get back onto the auto-otaku track. Straight after grabbing a quick dinner and letting myself unwind for a few minutes with a cold biru, it was time to pound the pavement once again, this time towards Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi for Rauh-Welt Begriff’s yearly New Years meet & party. When i arrived, the meet was already in full swing with a number of cars parked up and Nakai unloading some coveted RWB merchandise onto his car. These pair of orange RWBs made for some nice pictures. Although i was sort of hoping for more to turn up, it is still always cool to see the tribe of RWB coming together in a single parking compound. With another meet lined up and a 45-minute journey in between, i headed back towards the train station (and out of the freezing cold) to conclude my rather intense first day of Speedhunting. Next stop, Odaiba. Something big is gonna come with the next post. Prease like my facebook page so i can one day be famous enough to have my face plastered on a gaudy teal Honda Freed with pink wheels: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Garage36/263822652100
  6. SINGAPORE - All they wanted was a way to send their 92-year-old mother to the hospital. The Chngs called the 1-777 Non-Emergency Ambulance Service (NEAS) last month. An ambulance operator quoted them $180 and some additional charges for the trip. But at the end of the 30-minute ride from their home in Choa Chu Kang to Singapore General Hospital, the family was hit with an $800 bill. Some of the add-ons on the bill included $150 for oxygen, $80 for bandages and $200 for painkillers. The private ambulance operator, Singapore Medical Care Training and Services (SMCT), has since been suspended by the NEAS Quality Committee. The Ministry of Health said it had received eight complaints, including the Chngs', since SMCT joined the NEAS network on Feb 8. It is understood that most of the complaints were about overcharging. The Chngs' mother, Madam Lim Soon Oh, had a fall at home the day before and the pain was causing her to skip her meals and medicine. Worried, her three sons decided to send her to the hospital for a checkup on May 10. Mr Edwin Chng, 56, an engineer, needed an ambulance as his mother could not get into a car or taxi as her fall prevented her from bending her knees. When the vehicle arrived, the paramedic told the family that the mother needed painkillers. On the ride to the hospital, paramedics put her on an intravenous (IV) drip and administered oxygen. They also placed two bandages on her knees. One of her sons, Mr Jason Chng, 53, said he did not think of questioning the ambulance attendant or to find out the cost of the various treatments. Their brother, Mr David Chng, 66, a chauffeur, went along with the ambulance. He said: "They showed me a list, everything was a minimum of $10, $20. We thought that since they are professionals, they should know what they are doing. We didn't want to stop them... After all, we want the best for our mother. I thought that at most, it would cost $400." Despite the shock of the bill, they decided to pay up because Mr Edwin Chng's and his mother's identity cards were with the ambulance staff. "All we wanted was to transport my mum to the hospital, any additional treatment she needed could be provided by our family doctor, or even the hospital," said Mr Jason Chng. When The New Paper contacted SMCT in early June, its spokesman said: "We are a private emergency ambulance operator with no subsidy or third party support or funding. Our charges may appear to be high as they are non-subsidised... In our view the charges are most reasonable. "Other operators may be cheaper as they have low overheads and low expenses." Besides ambulance services, SMCT provides home nursing services and is an accredited training centre, which provides first aid and medical training for medical personnel and the public, according to its website. They have a total of five ambulances, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) website. The 1-777 scheme was started in 1998 for those who require ambulances for non-emergency cases. There are 20 private ambulance operators registered in the scheme. There is a list of the operators and charges on the SCDF website. Mr Jason Chng felt that his family has been penalised for being considerate. "We saw our case as non-urgent and called 1-777. The price is ridiculous for a transport of a non-emergency patient to the hospital." The Chngs' $800 bill Emergency call $180 Oxygen $170 IV drip $150 Bandages $80 Painkillers $200 Miscellaneous $20

  9. Planning a road trip from Syndey to Melbourne this coming June. High level plan is as follows: - touch down at Syndey, rent a MPV there (since we have 2 families with kids); - spend 2~3 days around Syndey, including Blue Mountain national park; - drive to Melbourne via the coastal route (or the inland route, haven't really decided as unsure about pros & cons); - Spend 2~3 days around Melbourne and Phillips Island; - drive through the Great Ocean Road and back to Melbourne - fly back to Syndey from Melbourne or drive via the other route (e.g. if coastal route from Syndey to Melbourne, then inland route back, and vice versa) Total duration is 9 days. A few questions that I appreciate suggestion/comments from any bros: 1) if I drive down the coastal route from Syndey to Melbourne, is it still worth driving through the Great Ocean road? Scenery wise it will be similiar I guess? 2) Which route, coastal or inland, is more interesting between Syndey and Melbourne? 3) Is there any place along the way that can't be missed? Thanks for any feedback.
  10. Dear Bros, I will be planning a 2 week Vacation in NZ (probably road trip) with my gf and some other friends. We have 4 couples (including gf & me) and will be looking to travel around Sept - Oct period. Any good places to recomend? (both South and North Island) Thanks!!
  11. Dear all, Need some advice here. I'm thinking of change from my current sedan (Mazda3) to a 7 seater, to cater my bigger kids and extended family. We also plan to do road trips to Malaysia or even Thailand more frequently in the coming years. Due to budget, I'll only consider 2nd hand. Initially I was thinking of the popular choices, either a WISH or a STREAM, more inclined to the WISH. But I'm not sue whether a SUV will be more suited when drive to Malaysis/Thailand where road conditions may be too rough for an MPV. Then I'm concerned with the service and fuel costs that SUV may incur more than MPV, and the noise level. So I summarised the pros and cons of the two options: MPV pros: cheaper, better FC, comfortable(?), quite. cons: not suitable for bumpy roads when trip to some parts in north. SUV pros: good for road trip. cons: rough ride(?), more costly (fuel and servicing), noisier(I guess?) Not sure if my summary is correct. For MPVs, my top candidates are WISH/STREAM, then some other less popular choices such as Grandis, Mazda5, Touran. The former are actually not cheap compared to the later due to its popularity but in the long run I think the overall cost in servicing will be less than later? For SUVs I'm looking at Fortuner, Santa Fe, Captiva, Crossroad. If WISH/STREAM has no problem for road trips to Malaysia/Thailand then I can settle with either one. But if they are not, then I'll probably choose an SUV, with priority given to reliability, quietness, FC in that order. Hope can get more info and suggestions for these cars listed. thx! ps: a side question, is it possible to install roof racks on WISH/STREAM? will it damage the car in someway or it's a standard add-on for any car?

  14. Good morning all, 2 of my friends and I are contemplating taking on a road trip to Malacca but there are several areas of concern which we feel should be addressed first. 1. Limited driving experience: As we are only 21 this year and the most experienced of us has merely 1 year plus of experience on local roads, it would be more difficult to find a willing car rental. On top of that I believe the insurance excess could be much higher for inexperienced drivers like us? We might be able to use one of our family's car but are now looking at rental as an alternative. 2. Choice of car rental: Would it be easier for us to engage a reliable rental company in JB instead of Singapore? The costs would be cheaper too since there is no need to pay for any overseas driving surcharge. Any recommendations to give? 3. Could there be any potential problems that newbie drivers like us will encounter when driving up north? With regard to places to visit, I believe that it is not much of an issue as there are countless websites to refer to... I would greatly appreciate any constructive feedback as it will contribute to our decision making - go or no go. Thank you all in advance!

  16. Just got back from a road trip from Singapore to Chiang Mai to do the Mae Hong Son Loop. The intention of this thread to to update fellow enthusiasts who are thinking of driving there in their own (performance) car to do the loop. The short answer is - it's not really worth it. My car had continuous issues with the Check Engine Light coming on, eventually confirmed to be because of poor quality fuel. Finally after the trip I stopped by in Bangkok and the dealer said that they have similar issues with their customer's cars in Bangkok. The solution was to use only Caltex 95 or Shell 95 and stay away from PTT. There is a partial solution in renting a BMW 3 series or a somewhat sporty saloon out of Bangkok and making the trip to Chiang Mai (it is difficult to find something more exciting than a Vios, Accord, Fortuner or Camry to rent from Chiang Mai). The road from Chiang Mai to Pai is as twisty as South Buona Vista Road. It is not in good condition - many potholes at least half of the way there. At the moment it is still wet and very slick. Many corners on that road have worn through leaving wet gravel exposed. Some corners are always in the shade so they are very slippery. The road from Pai to MHS is much better. Good mix of fast flowing corners and also tight ones. MHS to Khuan Yuam and Mae Chaem are not too bad. Mae Chaem up to Doi Inthanon is very narrow and winding - even more twisty than South Buona Vista Road. From Doi Inthanon down to Chom Thong the road is excellent - the best of the MHS loop. Very few potholes and very good quality paving. All that said and done, the trip was not a complete write off. I managed to have some fun: https://vimeo.com/78071366

  18. It was a nice trip to Kota Tinggi. As discussed with Pisces, we intend to do another trip to Port Dickson, tentatively first week of november. Anyone has been there before? I will be checking the type of hotel/chalet there. What are the activities we can do there? We welcome mcfers to join us for this trip.
  19. Any bro here encounter your rental car broke down during your self drive overseas road trip? How did you get help? care to share your experience.
  20. Folks, Planning for a holiday in USA in July. This time round, intending to go for a 2-week driving trip covering Rhode Island, Washington and Toronto. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
  21. Just wondering if anyone experience being sick for the entire holiday trip before? My last holiday was horrible. I was having fever at night before catching the next morning flight to Penang. I was sick thru out the entire 4 days and had to swallow alot of panadols. my travel buddy is a doctor so I feel quite safe but he told me i could be having viral fever. I just took alot of panadols and augmentin. cant even enjoy the penang food. Totally cant enjoy that holiday. I think its even more sad if i were to be somewhere further.
  22. This trip has been confirmed just looking for more enthusiates to share the fun. I have done the Penang to Kelantan before, for just the cornering parts is enough to justify the whole trip let alone the sceneries and food.
  23. link: http://tanjungpiairesort.com/index.html Found this resort in Southern tip of JB. Searched MCF and no one mentioned about this resort. Welcome To TanjungPiaiResort.com "Tanjung Piai is a heaven for diverse species of flora and fauna which is located at the southernmost tip of Peninsula Malaysia. The resort offers a world of enchanting charms. Built on stilts, a reminiscent of old fishing village and surrounded by one of the largest mangrove swampland, home to long tailed mangrove monkeys, beady-eyed mudskippers, crab-eating macaques, land hermit crabs and fireflies. The sea cool breeze and the breathtaking view of the sea freighters will keep one mesmerized. It is also famous for being a hotspot for birdwatchers to visit during the migratory season which falls around March and September." Any members here been to this place ? from their wed site, the food look tempting enough Will not go in far into mainland of MY with the instabilities of KL after GE and maybe just spend weekends around JB area ...
  24. Booked in march with agency to go China Guilin in early June. But now with bird flu looming mostly affecting eastern provinces, in two minds whether to go elsewhere. Paid deposit liao for 8 people including elderly and one child. Would you go if you are in my shoes? Most likely want to play safe and go elsewhere.
  25. Anyone out there like me had bought the Groupon $0 shanghai trip but had already went and came back? What's the experience? Did you stay in the 4star hotels which stated in the groupon?
