  6. Dear Senior forumers. My wife was driving on single lane flyover toward CTE northbound. Speed was 10km/h, traffic was slow and heavy, a big mud truck came from back long the right hand side cheveron and kiss her car on the right hand side causing rightside fender, door, side mirror damages. Nothing damage on truck, took photo, exchange particulars, truck driver even sign off to say he will pay for damages. No one was injured. Now the lousy part, driver call and say truck owner dont want to pay and ask her to claim insurance. She has since reported the accident to claim truck as third-party. I would like to ask the more experienced folks here. Questions: 1. Does the signed memo make the truck insurance settle and agree to pay off her claim? 2. Can the truck driver anyhow file for insurance claim on her insurance for his old beaten truck for damages even though there is no damages? 3. The damage is only 1500$, I really dont see the point in claiming insurance since he is a lower wage worker and need the license and NCB, is there anyway to convince him to private settle? Hope to get some good advice.
  7. This 'monster truck' not only towers above other vehicles on the road, it also has metal bars installed as bumpers. A vehicle such as this would likely make a mess of any vehicle it got into an accident with, says a STOMPer. Here's what the concerned STOMPer had to say: "This 'monster truck' was spotted in a carpark near Sin Ming Avenue. "As you can see clearly from the photo, the body of the 'monster truck' is well above the normal height and metal bars were installed as bumpers. "I can only imagine the damage that could be inflicted to another party's vehicle should this 'monster truck' get involved in an accident. "Could the LTA comment if this kind of dangerous vehicle is allowed on our roads?"

  12. This irresponsible driver has tie a small tiny string on the huge high pile of wooden pallets on the lorry. Very irresponsible, at least there should cover it with canvs or use a vehicle that is covered or tie more string to it. But the wooden pallets has all flying around and no cars dares to drive near this vehicle. Very irresponsible and it is too dangerous. 14. Aug 28, 2008 Prof dies in truck accident The truck driver (left), who is in his 50s, talking to a passer-by at the accident scene yesterday. The incident happened at 8.30pm while the professor was walking home. -- ST PHOTO: SAMUEL HE View more photos A TRUCK hit an engineering professor on Tuesday evening, killing him. Associate Professor Ooi Ban Leong of the National University of Singapore (NUS), who was taking his usual walk home from the campus, was then crossing the road at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue West and Clementi Road at 8.30pm. He died at the scene from severe head injuries. Prof Ooi, 41, who had taught at the university's department of electrical and computer engineering since 1996, specialised in microwave engineering, said an NUS spokesman. He was said to have been popular with the students. His father, 62-year-old security guard Ooi Chor Seng, was at the mortuary yesterday to claim his body. He told reporters that his son owned a car but preferred to walk between campus and his home in Buona Vista. 'He told me he was tired of always sitting down at the desk, so he enjoyed the exercise he got from his walks. He was always concerned about his health,' said Mr Ooi, as he broke down in tears. Prof Ooi leaves behind his wife, a housewife aged 38, and an eight-year-old daughter. His father said the family did not wish for any apology or for the truck driver to attend the funeral. He said: 'Even if he apologises, it won't change the situation. It doesn't matter whether or not the truck driver had the right of way. The pedestrian's safety should always come first.' The truck driver, an unidentified man in his 50s, is helping the police in investigations. KIMBERLY SPYKERMAN http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/Breaking%...ory_272763.html

  16. just to share. Was entering the CTE towards city via the sliproad along Yio Chu Kang road this morning when I saw a overturned truck a few cars in front of me. Traffic along the sliproad was at a stand-still. Reason being that the truck has blocked almost the whole road, leaving a gap that only a trishaw can pass through. [inline 1st.jpg] This sliproad was particularly long, maybe 200m or so, and has 2 entrances. Therefore, you can imagine the jam. Being at the front of the jam, and having no way to go through, a brave taxi mounted the kerb using his right tyres, and squeezed his way through. See the picture. You can still see the cab driving off. I was not going to risk my car on the kerb, and had to reverse all the way out of the sliproad. A few other cars copied the taxi's great escape, but I wondered how many made it through safely. Of note, I would like to praise a gentleman in a green polo shirt, driving a black Peugeot. He helped to divert the traffic out of the sliproad, and even stayed on to prevent more vehicles from entering even after all the vehicles have left. I know cos I was at the front of the jam, therefore to reverse out, I would be one of the last to leave. He was still there diverting the traffic then.

  19. March 27, 2008 In a car crash? New one-stop service will mean insurer does all paperwork and even gets tow truck for you By Christopher Tan NO MORE forms to fill at the roadside. No more queueing at inspection centres. And no more hunting for workshops which are willing to make third-party claims for you. All you need to do the next time you are in a motor accident is to call your insurer. It will do the rest for you, including sending a surveyor and, if needed, a tow truck - plus supplying a replacement vehicle where feasible. The General Insurance Association (GIA) said yesterday that its 29 member companies expect to launch the 'one-stop' service in May. The move is being introduced in another bid by the association to control motor insurance losses, which hit a five-year high of $103.2 million last year - a big jump over the $625,000 in 2006. Previous efforts included setting up independent damage assessment centres and requiring motorists to fill accident statements at the site of accidents. GIA president Derek Teo said yesterday that the losses can be attributed partly to motorists sending their accident-damaged vehicles straight to workshops - a practice that has often made it difficult for insurers to survey the damage until much later. This, said Mr Teo, has led to contentious claims and litigation which drive costs up unnecessarily. To prevent this, motorists will be required to inform their insurers of an accident within 24 hours in order to enjoy the one-stop service. 'If they do not, they will be in breach of an agreement and risk not being covered,' Mr Teo said at the association's 41st annual general meeting luncheon. He added that 'the new scheme is intended to be less painful for everyone'. He also said that insurers would have little or no reason to raise premiums if the scheme was successful in containing costs. It gives motorists several incentives to comply with the 24-hour notification rule. For starters, drivers need no longer struggle to complete the lengthy Singapore Accident Statement at the accident site. The form was introduced in 2004 as an attempt to establish unbiased facts of an accident. However, many motorists find the four-page document unwieldy, and fewer than 10 per cent of those in crashes were found to have completed it. Motorists also need not send their cars to an Independent Damage Assessment Centre (Idac), thus shortening the process of filing a claim and getting their cars repaired. Although the GIA did not say so, the new initiative is likely to result in the dismantling of the six-year-old Idac scheme, and would remove another cost layer. NTUC Income, Idac's strongest supporter - it once said it would carry on with the plan alone if it had to - could not be reached for comment yesterday. The GIA also said yesterday that it would look into why the number of accident reports had risen to 151,583 last year - the highest in five years. But it reckoned that the greater use of commercial vehicles on the back of the economic boom, a larger number of foreigners who are unfamiliar with Singapore roads and worsening traffic congestion were 'logical reasons' for the trend. Motorists welcomed the one-stop move. Housewife Beverly Wong, 38, said: 'It sounds pretty cool. It will save a lot of hassle. I remember going to Idac once and had to queue for a long time.' Shouldn't extra loading be applied for the above two cases rather than across the board???

  22. Watch out! Speeding heavy vehicles ahead Letter from JOSEPH YEE I REFER to the report, "53 hurt in chain collisions" (Jan 18). . I am surprised that the antics of the drivers (and perhaps the owners, too) of heavy vehicles ?lorries, tippers, bulk concrete carriers, container prime movers, trailers and coaches ?do not seem to catch sufficient attention of the authorities. . Drive along any expressway or major multi-lane road during off peak hours and you will find heavy vehicles keeping pace with you at 80 to 90kmh or worse, tail-gating you. . Stand on a pedestrian overhead bridge over one of these roads for 10 minutes and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that many of these heavy vehicles are speeding beyond their 40kmh to 60kmh vehicle speed limits. . By the way, heavy vehicles are supposed to be fitted with speed limiters. But the observations on the roads will suggest that there is widespread tampering of these machines between vehicle inspections. . Heavy vehicles may form only a small proportion of the total vehicle population, but their bulk and their large number of passengers mean that accidents involving them tend to be more serious. . The authorities are correctly concentrating their enforcement efforts on drink driving. Keep up the good work. . But please take a closer look at the antics of the heavy vehicle drivers or owners. For too long they seem to have been winning this cat and mouse game. http://www.todayonline.com/articles/233019.asp

  24. Beware of Garbage Trucks By David J. Pollay How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive colleague ruin your day? Unless you're a robot, you are bound to blow your top off. However, the mark of a sucessful person is how quickly he or she can get back his or her focus on what's important. Sixteen years ago, I learned this lesson. I learn it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happen. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly. So, I said, 'Why did you do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now called, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck'. Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of fustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. If they happen to dump it on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and moved on. You'll be happier if you did that rather than fight them. So this was it: 'The Law of the Garbage Truck'. I started thinking, how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the street? It was that day I said, 'I'm not going to do it anymore.' I see garbage trucks everywhere and everyday. I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my taxi driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on. Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know they have to welcome their kids home from school with hugs and kisses. Teachers and parents know that they have to be fully present and at their best for the people they care about. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by? Here's my bet. You'll be happier. So...love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. Believe that every thing happens for a reason. If you get a chance, TAKE IT! If it changes your life, LET IT! Nobody said it would be easy... They just promised it would be WORTH IT Cheers! "Life is short. Enjoy the journey."
