  2. It seems to me that major european brands are going into turbo-charged (or FI) engines, with even BMW introducing turbo into its entry level 2 litre 4 cylinders. while the Jap powerhouses (Honda/Toyota) are wholeheartedly in the hybrid route... will this be the direction forward? that brands belonging to each continent carving a niche in the auto industry. will we not see a turbo toyota/honda ever? ps: i do understand that the directions manufacturer choose are always aligned to government legislation.

  4. BMW's long-rumored four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine has finally made its world premiere on the X1 xDrive28. Expect the new powerplant to be offered in a variety of models in the near future. This is the first four-cylinder petrol engine to employ BMW's TwinPower Turbo technology. It also benefit from technologies such as double VANOS , VALVETRONIC and direct injection. Closely modeled after the Bavarian firm's force-fed in-line six-cylinder motors, it produces an output of 245 bhp with a peak torque of 350Nm. Its torque figure matches the 2.0 TFSI unit in the Audi A4 and overshadows the A4 in terms of horsepower. The 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine is hooked up to a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Mated to with the manual gearbox, the X1 xDrive28 completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 6.1 seconds (6.5 seconds with automatic transmission) and hits a top speed of 240 km/h. In the EU test cycle, the turbocharged 2.0 SUV returns an average fuel consumption of 7.9 lt/100 km with CO2 emissions of 183 g/km. With the escalating fuel price, consumers may be pleased to know that this new powerplant requires a min fuel grade of just RON 91. I am looking forward to its application in the 5 Series and the upcoming 3 Series
  5. Just saw this extremely creative keychain for sale lol. Just wondering, since seller claims this can spin up to 10,000rpm, why is it that a real turbo cost so much and requires oil/water cooling while a simple keychain like this can do so without lubrication of any sort? Is the claim even valid?? Nevertheless, still quite a novel keychain for $12 haha.
  6. According to a report from Autocar , Honda is rumored to be working on a CR-Z that ditches its conventional hybrid powertrain in favor of a small-displacement, turbocharged mill. The proposed new engine is an all-new 1.6-liter unit that will produce around 160 horsepower. Autocar states that a higher-output CR-Z Type R may follow shortly thereafter, rumored to produce around 200 hp. This new powerplant is reportedly slated for use in the Honda Jazz (Fit), Civic and Accord, and could provide the basis for the next-generation Civic Si engine. Like many European B and C segment cars, the next Fit and Civic are also moving to smaller displacement, forced induction powertrains to offset increasing emission standards. Sales of the hybrid CR-Z have started to fade in Honda's home market, despite the hatch being named the Japanese Car of the Year. Honda hopes that a turbocharged CR-Z would broaden the vehicle's appeal in other key markets, as well, such as the United States and Europe. The 1.6 liter Turbo powered CR-Z will ensure that Honda have an answer to the Scirroco and the upcoming Hyundai Veloster.

  10. I dont' need a complete overhaul. All I need to is to replace the Turbine shaft. Cause one of the fins on the turbine wheel is chipped thus I want to get it replaced in case it cause problems. I already have ordered a replacement shaft and I just need someone to dismantle the turbo and install the shaft (don't need all those properly balanced etc..... cause I don't intend to use it for long). Anyone knows any WS that does turbo repair? I tried calling Turbo one but they say they only sell new turbos (despite the website saying they do repairs). Thanks

  12. I see some NA cars having turbo timer installed and I don't understand the logic behind it. Why do NA cars need turbo timer?
  13. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N57 Take a look at the latest BMW diesel engine esp. the twin turbo engine. Its HP is 302HP with a whopping 600Nm of torque!! By contrast, BMW's N54B30 (a 3L turbo engine) produces ~330HP and 450Nm torque. Can fight even evos and WRX easily (stock for stock of course). But the 600Nm toruqe allows the diesel car to pull ahead long before the WRX or Evo's turbo kicks in....
  14. I notice that there is 2 models of Forester in sgcarmart for sale. 2.0XT, 2.5T & 2.5XT. Between these 3 models, what are the main difference. 2.0XT last models in 2005 2.5T as early as 2005~2007 2.5XT 2008 onwards. Is the 2.5T as good as 2.5XT?
  15. Hi guys! Are there any WS in SG that does Turbo rebuild? Cause one the fins in my Turbine is chipped and I am thinking to replace the turbine shaft + bearings and oil seals. Are there any WS in SG that does turbo rebuild? Thanks!

  18. The lawsuit claims that the twin-turbo N54 engine is defective. A collection of owners in California recently filed a class action lawsuit against BMW. The lawsuit alleges that BMW systematically concealed information from the public and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding defective fuel pumps and their risks to consumers. The fuel pump that they use is a high-pressure unit andnd it's known to fail unexpectedly. This causes the ECU to go into "limp mode", which translates into a significant and sudden loss of power. The lawsuit also alleges a design flaw with the turbochargers. While BMW claims that the twin-turbo inline 6 has no turbo lag. Owners report significant throttle delays, along with "strange noises" coming from the engine during acceleration. BMW issued the following statement about the turbo problem; "The turbo complaint is much less widespread and we have had a service bulletin in place since 2007 to address it. In an effort to address specific noise concerns, BMW updated the turbocharged engine software on 335i/xi and 535i/xi models built from June 2006 through March 2008. The updated software causes a small amount of increased "turbocharger lag" under certain circumstances and, while not substantial, the lag may be perceptible to the most sensitive BMW drivers. X6, 135i, and 3 Series/5 Series vehicles from March 2008 production onward are not affected." About the fuel pump problem, they said; "BMW has discovered that certain 2007-2010 model year vehicles may experience partial failure of the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) which is part of the direct fuel injection system on certain 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X6, and Z4 models. Specifically, vehicles powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine (internally dubbed "N54") are affected. Symptoms include long engine starting times and sometimes the illumination of the Service Engine Soon lamp in the instrument cluster, possibly accompanied by reduced engine performance (Fail Safe operation). As a result, BMW will extend the emissions warranty coverage period to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, on affected vehicles in all 50 States. If the HPFP fails during the extended warranty coverage period, BMW will replace it with a newer-production version. Customers who experience long starting times or notice the Service Engine Soon lamp should contact an Authorized BMW Center to schedule a service appointment." This isn't the first lawsuit over the N54 engine. However, this one is attempting to force BMW into to recall. The effected cars were made from 2006-2010, and include the 135i, the 335i, the 535i, the X6 and the Z4. This includes the AWD versions too. http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/article.php?AID=3829
  19. Folks, I had a little discussion about NA n turbo cars with my friend. As I ve not driven a turbo car before thus need your sharing to clear my doubts. I was told that as turbo cars heat up faster than NA cars thus is not advisable to drive turbo car for long distance. For turbo cars traveling to penang for instance, need to have a few pit stop to cool down engine but a NA car can shoot all the way there without fearing of engine overheat. Anyone driving a turbo car care to share if this is true? Thks
