  1. Honda has released the details of its new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, the first mass-produced engine from Honda's latest Earth Dreams series of fuel efficient powertrains. The new motor will be first utilized in the Civic come early 2013 and later on in the new CRV. The 1.6-litre unit is the lightest diesel engine in its class, thanks a variety of weight-saving measures. It has an aluminium cylinder head joined to an open deck aluminium block and the thickness of the cylinder walls has been reduced to 8mm as compared to 9mm for the 2.2-litre i-DTEC. This makes the engine 47 kg lighter than the 2.2-litre power plant. The engine is also equipped with a Garret turbocharger featuring an efficient variable-nozzle design. All these mean that the fuel economy is rated at an impressive 3.59L/100km while CO2 emission stands at 94 g/km. It churns out 120bhp at 4,000 rpm and has a peak torque of 300Nm at 2,000 rpm. Hyundai's award-winning 1.6-litre CRDI lump produces slightly more power at 126bhp but less torque at 264Nm. Designed specifically for the European market, the new engine will be produced at Honda's facility in Swindon, U.K., with an output of 500 units per day.
  2. [extract] At the recent Paris Motor Show, Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed that the Civic Type R would go on sale in 2015 but did not give out any further details. Although there are about two more years before the arrival of the 2015 Civic Type R (CTR), rumors are starting to emerge with regards to the boy racer
  3. Nissan Australia has confirmed the introduction of a hot new version of the Nissan Pulsar during an announcement made ahead of the local unveiling of the new hatchback at the 2012 Sydney motor show. The Pulsar is also known as the Tiida in other markets. Called the Nissan Pulsar SSS, the hot hatch will be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine (Codenamed MR16DDT) that produces 188bhp with a peak torque of 240Nm. This unit is also shared with the Nissan Juke. The engine will be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT. Although no official figure is provided, the SSS is believed to complete the century sprint in a little over 7 seconds given that the much larger Juke is able to do so in approximately 8 seconds. If this is not enough to make increase your pulse, an even more powerful Pulsar SSS NISMO could be on the card since the 1.6 turbo engine has already been tuned for the Juke. Australia will become the second market after China to get the Pulsar SSS with suspension tuned specifically for local conditions.
  4. When I saw the picture above, I thought I was looking at the Mk6 Golf GTI. It is even wearing the same "Detroit" rims borrowed from the Mk6 GTI. But on further reading, I realized that I was actually looking at the design study of the 2013 MK7 Golf GTI. Although this is a concept car, it looked very production ready with all the GTI themes such as the tartan cloth upholstery and flat-bottomed steering wheel. Like all Mk7 Golfs, the GTI rides on VW's all-new MQB platform. The most important detail is what lies under the hood of the latest VW hot hatch. It will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged, direct-injected unit that pumps out 217bhp and 350Nm of torque, which is the same as the MK6 Golf R. With such tremendous twisting force, the latest iteration of the GTI sprints from 0 to 100km/h is 6.6 sec before reaching a top speed of 246 km/h. Buyers will be able to choose between a standard manual gearbox and the famed DSG dual-clutch transmission. For the first time ever, VW will offer a performance pack for the Golf GTI. However, power is only increased by a mere 10bhp with century sprint reduced by a negligible 0.1 second. The performance pack also comes with a differential lock that reduces understeer as well as bigger front brake discs. The 2013 Golf GTI is differentiated from the standard version by the twin red stripe at the front grille, red brake calipers, smoked LED tail lights and 80 mm chromed tailpipes. If I am an existing Mk6 Golf GTI owner, I will be quite happy that my ride will not look outdated as compared to its successor.
  5. Move over, Polo GTI, here comes the 2013 Renault Clio RS 200. As the name suggest, this is the performance version of the French mini hatchback. Unlike its naturally-aspirated predecessor, the new model is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine mated to a six-speed dual clutch transmission. Despite losing 400cc, the new RS produces the same power at 197bhp. What is more impressive is that turbocharged lump generates 26Nm more torque and achieves its peak torque at a much lower 1750rpm (vs 5400rpm in the old model). The pocket rocket allows the driver to select between normal and sport mode via an 'RS' button. In addition, a 'Race mode' for the transmission can be chosen and gear change would only take a mere 150 milliseconds. The car will also be offered with an optional Launch Control system. Although the century sprint timing of the new RS is not released, it is speculated to be below 6.5 seconds in 'Race mode'. The exterior styling details warn the rest of the road users not to mess with this little mean machine. The blackened side mirrors, LED DRLs, redesigned bumpers, red brake calipers, 17" black alloys differentiate the RS variant from its lesser brethren. On the inside, the RS gets red trimmings all over and sports bucket seats to keep your butt in place during hard cornering. Other standard features include touchscreen navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as Renault
  6. The 2014 BMW M3 has been spied while undergoing some testing on the famous German track, the Nurburgring, thanks to the folks at Bimmer Post. From the footage, we can see that like all previous generations of the M3, the top-of-the range BMW 3 series has subtle styling differences from its lesser siblings. The all-new M3 is observed to have two pair of exhaust pipe. Other than the styling of the new M3, the video also give us a preview of the aural pleasure that can be derived from the car

  10. In one of my earlier articles, I mentioned that Opel will unveil the all-new 1.6-litre four cylinder Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) petrol engine at the upcoming Moscow International Auto Salon. According to gminsidenews.com, this new power plant will eventually be heading to North America and Chevrolet will be the main user it. The Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Sonic are all expected to receive the engine between 2014 and 2015. The next generation GMC Terrain is also expected to utilize the 1.6-litre turbo. I am looking forward to this version of the Cruze as it will finally have the firepower to go head on against the popular Jetta Sport. The forced-fed unit will most likely make about 180bhp with 300Nm of torque. It will also be equipped with start/stop function to enhance fuel efficiency. This engine will be GM
  11. [extract] Fiat has unveiled the 2013 500 Turbo at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California. The new variant aims for the sweet spot between the relatively hardcore Abarth and the standard 500. The Fiat 500 turbo offers a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance brakes and a revised steering system for improved handling. For a more aggressive appearance, the new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo features a pronounced front fascia that has been pushed 2.7 inches forward of the car

  15. Mercedes has finally announced details on the top-of-the range CLS Shooting Brake model, the 63 AMG. Like the saloon version, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine that churns out 518bhp at 5,250 rpm with 700Nm of torque between 1,750 to 5,250 rpm. Century sprint time is quoted at 4.4 seconds. For those who hungers for more power, Mercedes offers the 'Edition 1' Performance Package that boost output to 550bhp and 800Nm, allowing the car to shave off 0.1 seconds in the 0-100km/h timing. The top speed of both the regular and the 'Edition 1' variants are electronically limited to 250 km/h. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with four driving modes - Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual. Power is nothing without control. The CLS 63 AMG comes fitted with a high-performance braking system with 360 mm ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round with an optional ceramic high-performance composite braking system that comes equipped with enlarged brake discs. Mercedes engineers also fitted the supercar with an AMG Ride Control sports suspension that comes with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle. The system also comes with automatic level control and an electronically controlled damping system with either Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus mode. According to the German automaker, market launches of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake "Edition 1" will begin in October 2012.
  16. Renault has released the initial details on the all-new 2013 Clio, ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show. The MK 4 Clio is the first production model to be penned under the watch of Renault's new chief designer, Laurens van den Acker. Described as the first full expression of the Renault's 'design renaissance', the model has a DeZir concept-inspired grille, sweptback headlights and muscular fenders. The gloss black trim that stretches across the lower door panels, LED daytime running lights and integrated rear door handles make the French supermini stands out from its competitors such as the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. When the Clio 4 goes on sale in Europe this fall, it will be launched with two engines. These include a new 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbocharged Energy TCe petrol delivering 89bhp and 135Nm of peak torque with an average fuel consumption of 4.3L/100km. Next is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel with also 89bhp. The oil burner returns a combined fuel consumption of just 3.2L/100km. In early 2013, Renault will enhance the range with a new 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 118bhp and 190Nm of torque. It will be coupled to a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard. Renault has not released the details on the Clio 4's exterior dimensions but the company said that the car will have a lower ride height and wider tracks than its predecessor. The new Clio is a whopping 100kg lighter than its predecessor. That's about the weight of an American wrestler. Renault is allowing the customers to personalise the interior and exterior of the car in many ways, such as the steering wheel, gear lever, upholstery materials, dashboard, front grille and rear and side door inserts. "[The] New Renault Clio was conceived as a piece of sensuous sculpture which stimulates desire," explains van den Acker. "Like muscles, its curves express the dynamism radiated by the DeZir concept car. No acute or aggressive angles, just voluptuous curves that make you want to go up to it and caress it." I fell in love with the car when I first lay my eyes on the photos. Looks like Renault has got a winner here.
  17. Recently, I read from an advertisement on The Straits Times that the C-Class C180 Blue Efficiency sedan will receive a new 1.6-litre turbocharged engine. Erm, but don't we already have a 1.6-litre C-Class sedan in the form of the supercharged C180 Kompressor Blue Efficiency ? This spurred me to demystify what this new engine is all about. Codenamed M274, this new turbocharged 1.6-litre engine is the longitudinally mounted version of the M270 which has already made its debut on the new generation A-Class. The M274 is developed for use in rear-wheel-drive platform. The advent of the M274 will lead to a gradual phasing out of the current M271, a turbocharged 1.8-litre with up to 201bhp. The combustion process of the new engine is based on the third generation Mercedes-Benz direct injection system which was introduced last year with the BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engines. It will feature a Camtronic two-stage variable valve lift. The direct injection system pressure is up to 200 bar and is variably optimized according to the engine

  19. The funkiest Hyundai to date, the Veloster is here in Singapore. But sad to say, the performance failed to match its good looks. Powered by a 138bhp 1.6-litre Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, the Veloster is only about 10 bhp more than the 1.6-litre MPI engine found in the Elantra. It sprints leisurely to 100km/h in a leisurely 10.3 seconds. Even a mundane looking VW Jetta 1.4-litre TSI can leave the Veloster behind. But fear not, for there is a super-hot 1.6 Turbo-GDI version of the Veloster, which is good for 201 bhp. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the forced-induction coupe completes the century sprint in a quick 7.5 seconds. The Veloster seemed to go from mildly spicy in the non-turbo form to extremely spicy in the turbo variant. Is there room for something in-between? I believe there is. Just like the VW Golf, there is a base 122bhp version, a mid-range 160bhp

    Opel

Opel has just announced that it will be replacing the core of its petrol and diesel engines within the next year with three brand new engine families. For the time being, Opel has revealed details on one engine family which is a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit with direct injection and start/stop technologies. Opel says the new SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) ECOTEC petrol unit will be offered across several car lines in various states of tune with the most potent version delivering 197hp at 4,700rpm and 300Nm from as low as 1,700rpm. This version produces more torque than Ford
  21. [extract] The all-aluminum V6 unit has a 3.0-litre capacity and is tuned for either 340hp or 380hp. It is derived from the brand
