  1. Hello Guys, Starting this thread for the purpose of discussion and sharing. I am of Singaporean nationality (not converted, am pure breed ) and will begin working in Selangor on a Malaysian work permit soon. I will be purchasing a vehicle and intend to drive back to Singapore on certain occasions. I have verified with an LTA officer over their hotline and confirmed that it is possible for me to drive a Malaysia registered vehicle into Singapore provided I have obtained a permit from LTA. The LTA officer specifically mentioned that this permit has to be obtained for each trip that an individual intends to make, so it is not like a renewable permit. Has anyone here been through this before? Would like to hear experiences and things to look out for.
  2. The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) is taking 13 motor vehicle traders to task for anti-competitive actions. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Commission accused the traders of contravening the Competition Act. The group was said to have engaged in an anti-competitive agreement to suppress bids at public auctions of motor vehicles. The CCS said that the infringing conduct involved bid-rigging through an agreement to suppress bids at these auctions, which has the "object of preventing, restricting or distorting competition". 3. would like to know if it is normal when my IU beeps and deducts the money about 5-8 seconds after i pass the ERP. the older IU, where it only accepts cashcard, beeps almost instantly the moment i pass the gantry. however, this new one has a lag time and i wonder if it's the same for all out there. it's the same when i pass through carpark gantry with the EPS. the barrier comes up but doesnt deduct, only after 5-8s then it deducts. thanks.
  4. Car owners carrying out illegal modifications are on the rise. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said there's been an almost 30 per cent jump in the number from 2011. Between January and April this year, the number of summons issued by LTA averages at 784 each month, compared to a monthly average of 611 last year. Some of the most common illegal vehicle modifications are tinted windows and lighting infringements. Drivers who modify their cars call it their "interest" and "passion". There is even a car show and competition just to flaunt the many flashy modifications. But such a hobby does not come cheap as it can amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Experts Channel NewsAsia spoke to said these modifications done illegally can be dangerous. The probability of an illegally modified car going up in flames after encountering an impact has a 70 per cent higher risk relative to cars that did not undergo any illegal modifications. Also, the illegal modifications can cause damage to the car in the long run. Owner of Hanip Automobiles, Hanip Abdul, said: "You (the car) lose a lot of power; there're a lot of unburnt gas coming out from (the car's) gaspipe. There're a lot of things happening to your car. Eventually you see that your car (has) no power, outside concession very high. These are (what) they call wrong illegal modifications." He further added that it is not advisable to carry out any illegal modifications as every car has been designed to its optimum condition. Nevertheless, not all modifications are illegal. Motorists who wish to modify their vehicles are advised to check with the LTA or look up the guidelines. For first-time offenders who illegally modify their vehicles, they face a fine of up to S$1,000, or a jail term of up to three months. Repeat offenders will face a fine of up to S$2,000, or a jail term of up to six months. The LTA will also take actions against workshops found to be facilitating illegal modifications. Such workshops will face a fine of up to S$2,000, or a jail term of up to three months, for the first offence; and a fine of up to S$5,000, or a jail term of up to six months for repeat offences. 6. Hi folks, I have a few queries really need you guys to clear my doubts. 1) can commercial vehicles travel on the 1st lane if is a 2/3/4/5 lanes road? 2) if there is a traffic jam, can commercial vehicle travel on the 1st lane? Reason being someone told me that as long as within speed limit they can (heavy jam) 3) if commercial vehicle is making a right turn, they can stay on the 1st lane right ? But how far can they travel on the 1st lane before making a right turn? Thanks
  7. Interesting article. If the driver is a private property occupier then I see this may pose a challenge but if the driver resides in a HDB unit (either as a owner or renting it from someone else), he or she has to purchase a SPT so they have to provide their particulars to the board. Unless they do not have SPTs and use day & night parking coupons instead or the HDB does not share their system data with the mata, I do not see how the vehicle driver is claimed to be untraceable in this case. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_815408.html My Point Published on Jun 27, 2012 Tracing vehicle owners ON MONDAY, a car alarm sounded at the carpark at Block 204, Compassvale Drive in Sengkang. The matter was reported to the police, but at 1am yesterday, the alarm had not been switched off. When I went to the carpark and asked a police officer about the matter, he said the police were unable to trace the current owner of the car, as it was registered to a company that was closed at that time. This highlights an important issue about tracing vehicle owners. How would the police handle more serious cases, such as vehicle break-ins and suspicious packages found inside vehicles? There should be a system whereby the police can promptly trace all vehicles to their current owners. Siddharth Shah

  11. I find a problem with my ride. When I shift my gear into drive the vehicle does not move off automatically. When I try to jerk it makes a screeching noise like rubbing something (no obstruction), something like wheel clamp feeling. Initially thought is the brake but it is not. It will move off once I hit reverse a while then put into drive than it is normal. What problem is this..

  15. An accident involving five vehicles took place in front of Braddell MRT Station at 2.20pm on Saturday. The vehicles involved were a taxi, a grey Toyota Camry, a green Toyota Allion, a black Suzuki and a black BMW. It is understood that the Camry drove out from under Block 107, hit the taxi, before reversing and hitting the Suzuki. It then reversed again, colliding into the metal railing outside the MRT exit. 19. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_773082.html Ban vehicle accessories that distract drivers Published on Mar 3, 2012 I AM appalled that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) allows in-car video entertainment systems on the dashboard ('Glitzy video gadgets a distraction for drivers'; Feb 22). I am not against the use of in- vehicle entertainment devices, per se. Audio players can entertain drivers and help keep them alert. GPS devices also aid drivers in unknown territory. And having portable video players can help calm hyperactive children when travelling. However, it is ridiculous to allow drivers to install video-playing devices in the driver's view. It is already dangerous when drivers talk on their mobile phones; and it will be more so if they take their eyes off the road to watch a video. While multi-tasking is a time- saving skill in the workplace, it is a potentially deadly habit on the road. If drivers do not concentrate on driving, they will be blind to dangers. Such errant drivers must be kept off the road, for the safety of other road users, through a mandatory jail term and driving ban. In addition, insurers should treat the installation of such entertainment devices, in positions that might compromise safety, as illegal modifications, and decline insurance. The authorities should confiscate such vehicles when they are caught on the road. Tan Hong Chan
  20. Today on the way home around 8plus pm at SLE. Meet a stupid P Plate Driver. Drive slowly in the middle lane. Is fine for me. I will not disturb u and up to u wanna drive how fast. 22. Yesterday, took my car for veh inspection to JIC Ang Mo Kio. When i was in the queue, one of the inspector came and said that my front windscreen, back door windows tinting cannot pass and advised me to remove it before being inspected. He did mentioned that it was done in malaysia and to me personally, the tinting wasn't that bad and it is bit golden tan colour tinting, but not sure how much of light pass through. Since i bought the used car a year back, it came as it is and wonder how it passed the previous inspection. Any advise to try my luck on other inspection centers or any recommendation on workshops to remove the tinting and how much it would cost.
  23. http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/article.php?AID=4880 The annual vehicle population growth rate will be lowered from the current 1.5% to 1.0% in 2012, and then to 0.5% in 2013 and 2014. For 2012, the 1% p.a. growth will be front-loaded, with the current 1.5% p.a. growth rate maintained for the first half of the quota year (February 2012 to July 2012), followed by 0.5% p.a. growth rate for the remaining half of the quota year (August 2012 to January 2013). Overall, the growth rate for the new 3-year quota period is therefore 1.5% p.a. for the first 6 months, followed by 0.5% p.a. growth rate for the remaining 2.5 years. According to the LTA, the current annual vehicle population growth rate of 1.5% has outstripped the average annual road growth of about 1% in recent years. As road growth is expected to slow down to about 0.5% p.a. on average over the next decade, it is not sustainable to maintain the vehicle growth rate at 1.5%. The lower vehicle growth rate will be more closely aligned to the pace of road growth going forward. The lower vehicle growth rate is not expected to have a large impact on the COE supply in the next few years, especially in the context of an expected uptrend in vehicle de-registration numbers. The annual vehicle population growth rate will be reviewed after three years, and the COE quota for the COE bidding period from February 2012 to July 2012 will be announced in mid-January 2012.
