  1. A monthly average of 28 vehicle owners have been fined since 2010 for headlamp non-compliance. This number includes the unauthorised installation of High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew revealed this in a written reply to Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Zainal Sapari. Citing records from the Traffic Police, Mr Lui added there have been no accidents caused by drivers dazzled by light from other vehicles since 2005. HID headlamps can improve the visibility of drivers compared with standard halogen lamps. Since January 1, 2010, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) made it compulsory for all newly-registered vehicles with HID headlamps to be equipped with an auto-levelling feature. LTA said the feature helps reduce glare to drivers of oncoming vehicles without compromising the improved visibility the headlamps offer to drivers. Mr Lui said LTA enforcement officers look out for vehicles fitted with very bright headlamps that do not comply with its requirements. Owners of non-complying vehicles face a maximum penalty of S$1,000 fine and three months' jail. For subsequent offenders, they face up to S$2,000 fine and six months' jail. 2. Nine people were injured in a five-vehicle pile-up along the Seletar Expressway (SLE), in one of three accidents on the road on Saturday. Among those injured was a three-year-old girl suspected of having spinal injuries. The accident, which happened around 11.45am, involved three cars, a taxi and a truck. It took place near the Mandai exit on the SLE, heading towards Woodlands. The injured were sent to the National University Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Some of them had head lacerations and abrasions, and swelling in the chest. The accident also closed off several lanes, causing a major slowdown in traffic. Another accident took place around 1pm at the junction of Clementi Road and Dover Road. Two cars were seen being towed a few hours later. A Channel NewsAsia viewer, Shahida Banu, also sent in pictures of another accident at the junction of Toh Guan Road and Boon Lay Way. It happened around 2pm and involved a car and a lorry which flipped over. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said a man in his 20s was sent to hospital with lower back pains and arm abrasions. 5. http://dai.ly/x12scfx The team behind the Ken Block's Gymkhana videos (Mad Media) is back with the vengeance - this time round, more brutal and daring (almost insane) in their venture. Polaris RZR XP 1000. What is it? From the same people who makes snowmobiles and motorcycles, it is a top-of-range Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) - think of it as a special ops vehicle, and it should make your viewing more pleasurable. A 1.0-litre with 107bhp may not sound a lot to begin with, but it will propel the RZR to 50km/h in a little over two seconds, and 80km/h in just 5.3 seconds. Apparently, Mad Media has created the video as part of the campaign for the launch of the new model. The UTV featured in the video, though, has been extensively modified. The team has roped in off-road truck racer and UTV champion RJ Anderson to pilot the end product. In our eyes, the stuns are definitely more mental than before, and should send some chills down your spine while at it. Enjoy the 10 full minute of wholesome entertainment.
  6. Inside these pretty pictures is the new BMW i3. And if you haven't heard of it, the Bavarian automaker is heading full steam into Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the i3 will mark its foray in the segment. Under its 'i' sub brand, BMW will create two vehicles. The first - the i3 - was conceived to be an urban runabout - or MCV (Megacity Vehicle). A more mouth-watering i8 Spyder concept is scheduled to be launched at a later date. And we are keeping our fingers crossed that the production version will look just as stunning. Back to reality. Yes, the i3 is already on its way to its production run and will be on sale by next year. Much of the futuristic element of the concept has been inherited, and we must say it is one of the best looking EV so far - bar the sexy Tesla Roadster. BMW has vowed to make the i3 as 'liveable' as possible. Space for more than one - check. Proper seats - check. And there's the ingenious-looking cabin aperture, which does without the B-pillar for easier entrance into the cabin. Not bad at all. One of the most pressing question that must have popped into your mind by now - how far will it go on one full charge? On paper, it says 150km - a very usable range if you consider most of us in Singapore only do 50km daily. But what if those figures aren't reassuring enough? Or you need a longer range? BMW will offer an optional range extender, which will increase the total range to 300km. The minimalist interior design of the i3 is a fresh approach, and looks welcoming to us. The switch-gear looks straight from a sci-fi show, and seems easy to use too. Fans of the marque will be familiar with these ConnectedDrive controls. Look further and you will realise that there isn't a 'Sport' option on the drive select switch - proof that the i3 was meant to be a practical, economical city car after all. The whole package of the i3 looks pretty enticing. But if this is really the future of motoring, does it spell doom for adrenaline-pumping, mind blogging petrol-driven cars that we have been so accustomed to from day one? Jot down your thoughts below.
  7. This morning at 6.40am, whilst coming out from AMK Ave 1 to CTE toward Yishun, saw very thick white smoke at CTE opposite side going toward Kampong Java tunnel. Couldn't get a good look but I think a SBS bus on fire... The jam started from CTE before AMK Ave 1 exit to Yio Chu Kang flyover toward city. Those going to office will be late ....

  12. Four vehicles were involved in an accident on Sunday night, which left two people injured. A car driver in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. The Straits Times understands the driver had failed to stop in time at a red light, at the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Sin Ming Avenue. His car crashed into a taxi, which then collided into a van and another car. The taxi came to a halt on the second car's bonnet. The cabby suffered facial injuries, and also complained of back and chest pains. He was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment. Another person also suffered minor injuries, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman. But he decided against hospital treatment. The rest of the people involved in the crash were unhurt. Police investigations are ongoing. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...ed-suspicion-dr

  14. but "The Straits Time reports motor insurance premiums are expected to remain at current rates as the segment announced high profits yesterday." After posting five years of losses, vehicle insurers posted an underwriting profit of $50.4 million in 2012 - a 135.1 percent increase from 2011. Average premium collections also saw a small 0.5 percent increase last year of $1,280 - announced the General Insurance Association (GIA) at its annual briefing. The President of GIA, Derek Teo, told The Straits Times, average premiums should remain constant as long as there is underwriting profit. He also credited the Motor Claims Framework which combats deceitful and inflated claims for the continued profit. Mr Teo estimates 20 percent of the $700 million in motor claims incurred last year to be fraudulent or inflated. The Motor Claims Framework was set up in 2008, and calls for all motorists to inform insurers of accidents within 24 hours. This makes it easier for insurers to investigate accidents and resolve disputes, cites Mr Teo. Mr Teo also credited the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, which handles non-injury claims of up to $3,000 to help address inflated claims. Several critical issues face motor insurers, one being the rising number of accidents involving foreign-registered vehicle, from 5,286 reports two years ago to 5,537 reports last year. The large influx of foreign registered vehicles is attributed to the opening of Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa integrated resorts. The increasing number of injury claims also remains a concern, with 19,310 motor injuries reported last year, a 19.4 percent increase from 2008. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When they earn money they don't raise your premiums. When they don't make a profit, they raise your premiums. So when would they actually lower your premiums???

  17. A 34-year-old male driver crashed his car into a total of nine vehicles at two different locations, in addition to causing a pedestrian to be hurt. The first hit-and-run incident happened at the carpark of Block 742, Bedok Reservoir Road yesterday morning (Feb 5). At about 9.30am, he had turned into the carpark and was making a right turn when he hit a car and then went on to crash into seven more. A 53-year-old pedestrian was sandwiched between two of the cars and was sent to Changi General Hospital. Yet the driver did not stop and instead fled the scene. 15 minutes later, police caught up with him, after he crashed into the rear of a lorry at Tampines Avenue 10. He can be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for three months for failing to stop after an accident, as well as removing a vehicle from the scene. Failing to render assistance also carries a fine of up to $3,000 and a year in jail.
