  1. Interesting concept to charge the car: http://designtaxi.com/news/359332/Beautifu...Into-Its-Trunk/ Photovoltaic panes embedded in the fabric allows light from the sun or artificial lighting to power the pavilion.
  2. The Volvo XC60 is one good alternative to take into consideration when it comes to buying an SUV. It's an exclusive crossover SUV that comes with city safety measures to guarantee your family's safety. However, it seems that the Volvo XC60 is not all about commuting. You can see that if you go to Zurich, Switzerland central station where the Swedish automaker has set up its art display. The locals recognise the art display as the Volvo Art Session and it has been around for the past few years. Here, Volvo has chosen highly talented artists, some of whom are skilled veterans while some others are newcomers, to present creative exhibits including a Volvo as the central point of the art. In this year alone, the Swedish automaker has chosen no less than six artists from across the European continent. This year, their task is to transform the Volvo XC60 into a creative work of art. It's unfortunate, though, I have to say, as the work of art won't last for long. This happens because the work of one artist will have to be erased so that the next artist can present his work and so on and so forth. Trying to be creative at one of the busiest places in Europe, some of the artists can't help but to make the Volvo XC60 a focal point in their creative art presentations. However, some others seem to be more creative - at least so I think - by making the car almost completely unnoticeable.

  6. From the company that brought us side airbags, Volvo has introduced the Active High Beam Control Technology. According to Volvo, this system allows drivers to use their high beams at all times without causing disturbance to the rest of the traffic users. Volvo will display the new technology at the Geneva Motor Show. The system uses a camera mounted at the back of the rearview mirror to detect the traffic ahead. A device in the head lamps then partially blocks out the high beam in order not to cause glaring to oncoming drivers. Volvo says that the program is designed to be so precise that even an oncoming motorcycle can be detected and shielded from the high beam effectively. "When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. The same functionality applies to drivers in front. The side of the road is still illuminated, which makes it easier to detect unprotected road users," Volvo explains. The new system will be available as an option in the updated S60, V60, and XC60 in early 2014. Personally, I feel that it should be fitted as a standard equipment instead as I believe not many people would want to pay extra for something that does not benefit himself.
  7. The current range of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engines found in the Volvo S60 and S80 are essentially Ford's EcoBoost units. However, such arrangement is going to change in the near future. The Swedish car maker is distancing itself further from Ford Motor legacy as it prepares to launch a new range of in-house engines and a modular platform. Ford sold Volvo to China's Geely Holding Group in 2010 for US$1.8 billion. Volvo's new engines will have a maximum of four cylinders and will be turbocharged. The modularity of the engines implies that gasoline and diesel units will share 30 to 40 percent of the components. A three-cylinder gasoline unit is likely and each cylinder will be just below 500cc. The petrol engines will range from 140bhp to 280bhp while the diesel variants will produce between 120bhp to 230bhp. They will be launched before end of 2013. Apart from a new engine range, Volvo will develop a new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) that will underpin the all-new XC90 large SUV. Following that, the next V70 and S80 will also use the SPA although they will carry the V90 and S90 designations respectively when they go on sale. The new modular engines and platforms will enable Volvo to enjoy cost savings in areas such as material costs, engineering costs and installation investment cost. This is essential for the brand

  10. Volvo will cut production volumes at its Torslanda (Sweden) and Ghent (Belgium) plants due to continued weak demand as the European debt crisis and sluggish global growth take its toll on the car industry. Other automakers such as Ford and Opel have already reduced their output. At the Torslanda plant, production will stop for three days before the Christmas holidays. In Ghent, there will be two production-free days come December. In addition, three individual work shifts -- one in Ghent and two in Torslanda -- will be removed from the December production schedule. Going into 2013, Volvo is not positive as well. The company said it will cut production rate at its Torslanda plant to 45 cars per hour come week four of 2013 from 57 cars an hour. Volvo commented that the production slowdown will affect the number of agency workers employed at the Torslanda plant. "We have indicated before that we will need to be flexible in light of today's market situation, and that we will use the flexibility we have in our system when needed," said Lars Wrebo, Senior Vice President Manufacturing, Volvo Cars. "While sales volumes have shown a very positive trend in recent years, we have seen a continuous decline in customer demand in 2012 which so far has not picked up. Therefore a further adjustment to our production output is required," he added. The Chinese-owned auto maker announced recently that its US sales in October slumped 14.4% to 4196 cars compared to a year ago. Sales in China for the same month were down 11.7% from a year earlier to 3389 vehicles.

  12. [extract] Volvo cars are built like a tank. We have probably heard someone mentioning this to us. Older Volvo cars are known to be durable and long lasting, provided it is well taken care of. And since there are examples of such cars, Volvo has created a Heritage Club in the United States for high mileage cars. The club was created in order to recognise Volvo owners

  18. These billionaires made it to the Forbes list as some of the richest people in the world, but their choice of rides varies. For example, one house hardware entrepreneur drives a car that would only fetch about $1,500 (S$1,864), while a software mogul could sell his car for $4.4 (S$5.47) million. While some vehicles are considered dream rides others made the list due to the owners. Though the source of this article is new, it is unsure if these billionaires have changed their rides. Carlos Slim Helu is the world's richest man, according to Forbes Bill Gates' Porsche 959 Coupe, one of only 230 in the world Alice Walton, heiress of the Wal-Mart, second-richest woman in the world. 20. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Cars Volvo Car Corporation, or Volvo Personvagnar AB, is a Swedish automobile manufacturer founded in 1927, in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.[2] Volvo was originally formed as a subsidiary company to the ball bearing maker SKF. When Volvo AB was introduced on the Swedish stock exchange in 1935, SKF sold most of the shares in the company. Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo until 1999, when it was acquired by the Ford Motor Company as part of its Premier Automotive Group. Geely Holding Group then acquired Volvo from Ford in 2010.[3] Volvo produces models ranging from SUVs, station wagons (estates), and sedans (saloons), to compact executive sedans and coupes. With approximately 2,300 local dealers from around 100 national sales companies worldwide, the US is Volvo Cars' largest market, followed by Sweden, the United Kingdom, China and Germany.[citation needed] In 2010, Volvo recorded global sales of 373,525 cars, an increase of 11.2% compared to 2009.[4] Volvo is often compared to and nicknamed tractors,[5][6] partially because Volvo AB was and still is a manufacturer of heavy equipment, earlier Bolinder-Munktell, now Volvo Construction Equipment. Some consumers considered older models to be slow and heavy,[7] thus earning the distinction, "brick",[8] as a term of endearment for the classic, block-shaped Volvo, with the more powerful turbocharged variants known as "turbobricks".[8] The company moved away from the boxy styles of the 1970s and 1980s, to models which gained a reputation for sporting performance, including the factory-supported Volvo 240 turbos, which won the 1985 European Touring Car Championship (ETC) and 1986 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC).[9] Volvo is known for its high safety standards.[clarification needed] Owners are often proud of achieving high mileage;[10] one well-documented 1966 Volvo P1800 has been driven over 2.8 million miles, a Guinness World Record for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle.[11] According to some figures, the average age of a Volvo being discarded is 19.8 years, second only to Mercedes.[12]
  21. taken from blog in mcf........ If you currently own the latest Volvo S60 or XC60 and feels that heat is building up from below, it is better to pull over at the side of the road and check. This is because Volvo is recalling 2,742 2012 Volvo S60s and XC60s in the US due to a potential fuel leak that increases the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). so mr powder, please change to xc90 or something bigger and mightier for your safety sake. Take care.....

  23. Business Times - 24 Mar 2012 Volvo recalls more than 12,000 cars in China BEIJING - Volvo Cars is recalling 12,798 of its 2012 model year vehicles imported into China, the top Chinese quality regulator said, in order to prevent potential fuel leaks and to fix faulty wiring that could cause airbag failure. Volvo is recalling 11,119 S60 and XC60 cars to fix a wire harness under the front seats which might interfere with the car's airbags, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its website late on Friday. The firm is also recalling 1,679 S60 and XC60 cars to inspect the underbody coating which may penetrate the fuel lines and cause fuel leakage, it added. No casualties or deaths have been linked with the potential defects, the watchdog said. Geely, parent company of Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd , took over Ford Motor Co's Volvo car unit in August 2010. It was not immediately available for comment.
  24. [extract] Swedish automotive company, Volvo, has long been a pioneer in the areas of automotive safety. Over the past 60 years, the company has introduced several safety features on their cars. In 1944, they introduced laminated windshields (around 15 years before it became a worldwide mandatory for all cars); in 1966 they introduced crumple zones and side impact air bags in 1994. We usually often think that cars should provide safety for its internal occupants but it is also important to keep in mind that a heavy moving object could also be really dangerous to pedestrians outside the car. And due to this, Volvo has invented the external pedestrian air bag which is a world
