  1. Here we go again... S'pore water deal to be reviewed Sim Bak Heng New Straits Times Monday, Feb 17, 2014 JOHOR BARU - For the first time in 53 years, the raw water agreement between Johor and its neighbour across the Causeway, Singapore, is set to undergo a review. The Attorney-General's Chambers has given the Johor government the green light to reassess the rate charged for the raw water it supplies to Singapore, which has been in place since 1961. Following the move, Johor is expected to raise the rate sometime this year. It will also embark on a "zero water dependency" programme so that it would no longer need to purchase treated water from Singapore in the future. Although the rate has yet to be announced, it is believed that the state will stick to the rate proposed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which was 60 sen per 1,000 gallons of raw water. Currently, under the terms of the Malaysia-Singapore Agreement in 1961 and 1962, Singapore's Public Utilities Board (PUB) purchases raw water from Johor at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons (4,546.09 litres) and sells the treated water at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons to Johor. Johor sells 250 million litres of raw water to Singapore daily, and buys two per cent of the total back from them in the form of treated water, equivalent to five million litres daily. State Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the state executive council had discussed and raised the matter with the Federal Government last August. Since then, the Attorney-General's Chambers has been studying the legal aspects of the raw water agreement inked between the two countries more than five decades ago. "Early last month, we received a favourable reply from the A-G's Chambers, with regards to the legal aspects of the revised rates," he said. Photo Gallery: From seawater to drinking water Click on thumbnail to view photos. Source: PUB, HyFlUx, The New Paper "The A-G's Chambers met a Johor legal advisory team in Kuala Lumpur in early January and told them that we have the right to review the rate. With the green light, it is just a matter of time before we come up with the new rate." Hasni said the state government was anticipating that when the rate of raw water rate is increased to 60 sen per 1,000 gallons, Singapore would also hike the rate of treated water sold to Johor. In view of this, he said Johor would launch a "zero water dependency" programme by June this year. Under the programme, the state government will lay more pipes and improve the capacity of water treatment plants. "We hope to accomplish the programme within a year, which is by June next year. Once we have accomplished the programme, Johor will be self-sufficient and does not have to buy treated water from Singapore," said Hasni. He said raising the price of raw water was long overdue and Malaysia had been doing a social service by selling raw water to Singapore at a low rate for too many years. He said the new rate will reflect the actual price of raw water. (source: http://news.asiaone.com/news/malaysia/spore-water-deal-be-reviewed )

  3. Rain has finally came back after the long dry spell.. Giving us nice cool weathers and flowery sceneries.. But with the rain, I noticed one side of my tail light gets to trap water inside it.. not sure how it got in there in the first place.. Don't have time to actually investigate too.. So I was thinking if any bros here have a good workaround for this problem other than changing the entire assembly? I was thinking of probably drilling a small hole at the tail light so that the water will drain itself.. but doing so, I'm afraid that water may also seep into it and make matter worse.. any good suggestions??
  4. yahoo report : Malaysia has lost right to review water price, says Singapore Minister – Bernama When Malaysia decided not to review the water price under the Water Agreement in 1987, it lost its right to review the price, says Singapore Minister for Foreign Affairs K. Shanmugam. "Singapore’s position is that Malaysia has lost its right to review the water price. The Water Agreement provided for the review after 25 years. Specifically, there was a right to review the price of water jointly in 1987. "However, Malaysia consciously chose not to review the price. It had good reasons for this," he said this in reply to a Parliamentary question today. Ellen Lee of Sembawang GRC, had asked the minister whether Malaysia had the right to review the price of raw water sold to Singapore under the bilateral water agreement at any time before its expiry in 2061. Shanmugam said Singapore had stated its position on the issue and also conveyed it officially to the Malaysian Government on several occasions. "Our position on this issue is well-known to Malaysia. We have stated this publicly, and also conveyed it to the Malaysian Government, including at the highest levels. The Malaysian Government understands the position," he said. He quoted Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman as saying on February 17, this year: “An agreement is an agreement. When there is an agreement, we will honour the agreement. "If there is any need for review, we will forward it and if their response is positive, we will start talking." Shanmugam said that had Malaysia exercised the right to review the water price in 1987, Singapore might then have made different investment decisions to develop the Johor River, for instance the Linggiu Dam project of 1990. In the event, he said Malaysia chose not to review the water price in 1987, and on that basis, Singapore then took several actions, which also benefitted Malaysia. He said this included building the Linggiu Dam at a cost of over S$300 million (RM773 million), which increased the yield of the Johor River and enabled both Johor and Singapore to draw water from it during the dry season. Indeed, neither party can unilaterally change any of the terms of the 1962 Water Agreement. Shanmugam said Malaysia benefitted greatly from the current pricing arrangement. "We enjoy good relations with Malaysia at all levels. We will continue to work to enhance our cooperation and friendship with Malaysia, in order to benefit both our peoples," he added. – Bernama, March 6, 2014. link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/malaysia-lost-review-water-price-says-singapore-minister-161152546.html We build a S$300 million dam for MY ... 6. A young tree with dried out branches and leaves seen at the entrance of Nicoll Highway MRT Station. The dry spell in Singapore over the past few weeks has prompted national water agency PUB to ramp up the supply of NEWater and desalinated water to maintain water levels in the reservoirs. For the past two weeks, 20 to 25 million gallons per day (mgd) of NEWater have been pumped into reservoirs to top up water levels, a PUB spokesperson said in response to TODAY’s queries. Over the past 19 days, only 0.2mm of rainfall — which fell in Jurong on Sunday — was recorded across the island, the National Environment Agency said. Skies were overcast yesterday afternoon, but no rain fell. Last month, only 75.4mm of rainfall and five “rain days” — defined as having a minimum rainfall of 0.2mm — were recorded at the Meteorological Services Singapore’s Changi climate station. In comparison, the long-term average rainfall for January is 242.4mm and there are, on average, 15 rain days in the month. The NEA said the Republic is in the dry phase of the Northeast Monsoon season, which is characterised by generally windy conditions, cooler temperatures and drier weather. The phase set in earlier this year, and is expected to last till the end of this month or early next month, the NEA said. For the next two weeks, “generally fair and occasionally windy conditions” can be expected on most days while some passing showers can be expected on a few days towards the end of next week, the NEA said. The rainfall for this month is expected to be below average, it added. The NEA said Singapore last experienced similar dry periods between Jan 26 and Feb 10 in 2009, and between Feb 3 and 18 in 2011. NEWater and desalinated water are two of Singapore’s four national water sources, meeting up to 30 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively, of the country’s water needs. The other sources are imported water and water from local catchment areas. During dry months, the PUB works closely with the NEA to monitor weather conditions and the implications on reservoir levels, the PUB spokesperson said. She noted that, as with previous years, water usage increased slightly — by about 10 to 15 mgd — two weeks before Chinese New Year due to activities such as the traditional spring cleaning. After the festivities, it returns to the usual level. Nevertheless, the spokesperson called on the community and industries to “play their part to save and conserve our precious water resource”. Meanwhile, due to dry weather conditions in the region, fires and hot spots were detected yesterday in central Sumatra, the NEA said. A total of 108 hot spots with “a few isolated plumes” of smoke were visible over northern and central Sumatra, it added. Nevertheless, the NEA said that Singapore is not likely to be affected by the smoke from the fires in Sumatra due to prevailing winds blowing from the north-east. It will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary, the agency added. Source: http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/water-supplies-ramped-dry-spell-hits-spore
  7. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/oddnews/family-discovers-their-faucet-water-is-flammable-191347861.html?vp=1 The Parker family in Dixie, Louisiana was shocked when they found out that the water flowing from their home faucets was flammable. As reported by KSLA News 12, they had been having issues with their water for a year, but thought it wasn’t cause for serious concern until their daughter Sarah Evans visited and made the discovery. Sarah explained what prompted the test, "I did it because I'd seen it on TV before and a flame came up…In the morning, you come in and turn the water on and there is so much air pressure in the lines that is just blows water everywhere, you're soaked." The Parkers have two homes on their property, which share a private water well, so Sarah tested the second home where her brother lives and found that, "His water blew up and caught the fringe of the curtains, that is how high the flames came up." In addition to that, 17-year-old Meaghan Parker had a fainting episode while doing the dishes and doctors could not identify the cause. "My dad came in and tried to talk to me, and I was unresponsive and he said that I leaned back on the sink, and let go, and hit the floor," Meaghan recalled. The Louisiana family believes that their well has a methane gas leak, which John Parker thinks could be caused by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. The oil and gas company is drilling nearby the homes and John said, "This only started since they drilled these wells." Anadarko External Communcations Director John Christiansen issued a statement to KSLA which read: “At this time, no one knows the source of this issue, and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation has been notified so that a third-party expert can collect samples, conduct further testing and determine the source.” The land is rich in natural gas so experts have said that there is a possibility that the gas entered the well naturally. While hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, of shale has been sited in areas of the United States as a source of environmental pollution and contamination of drinking water, Hydrologist Gary Hanson said he has seen incidents where wells are drilled into shale that can produce gas. He added, "I'd have to look at it case by case, but we have no examples where we have actually seen natural gas coming in from a well, that was drilled nearby.” Until a determination can be made and the problem can be remedied, the Parkers have decided to shut off their well water and switched to the community water system.
  8. Hi guys, just wondering if any of you have this issue and how do you solve it. Over the weekend it was pouring rain heavily, and i drove my whole family out for dinner then realised that my rear left door is leaking. My mum who was sitting behind told me that. So how or what can i do to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.
  9. spent $400 at workshop to diagnose problem because i myself is afraid of white smoke cause it might mean my turbo up lorry. turns out $400 wasted because every part was tip top condition, headgasket, turbo seals, no leaks, oil at optimum levels. it will only occur on cold starts in the morning and probably after leaving it for more than a day or when it was just washed. the day that NEA caught me on video, it had just rained and it was also probably just washed. i appealed twice, but both rejected. what should my next step be? can i bring it down to NEA and prove to them my car no emit smoke? or must i invite them to come my house in morning to prove them there is water vapor if i flush my exhaust with water from a hose.

  14. My kids exams will finish early, so I was thinking of popping over to Port Dickson for a 2D1N trip. http://www.legendiwh.com.my/location.htm I was recommended the pool villa at the above resort, and as usual, there's a fair mix of "fabulous" and "won't go back again" reviews. Anyway, I'm not about to be detracted. 3 hours in and 3 hours back, but if I go early, I'll have the better part of 2 days for loafing at the private pool and enjoying the facilities. Any f/r on this resort?
