  2. Well done , Singapore [thumbsup] Have always been puzzled why we can do so well in SEA but unable to replicate that success in Asia or even at world level. 3. the end of Hybrid is nigh as well? --- Updated 09:50 AM Oct 21, 2012 LONDON - A small British company has developed a way to create petrol from air and water, technology it hopes may one day contribute to large-scale production of green fuels. Engineers at Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS) in Teeside, northern England, say they have produced 5 litres of synthetic petrol over a period of three months. The technique involves extracting carbon dioxide from air and hydrogen from water, and combining them in a reactor with a catalyst to make methanol. The methanol is then converted into petrol. By using renewable energy to power the process, it is possible to create carbon-neutral fuel that can be used in an identical way to standard petrol, scientists behind the technology say. "It's actually cleaner because it's synthetic," Mr Peter Harrison, chief executive officer of AFS, said in an interview. "You just make what you need to make in terms of the contents of it, so it doesn't contain what might be seen as pollutants, like sulphur," he said. The work is part of a two-year project that has so far cost around

  5. hi all, me bought Hyundai Verna 1.6A in May last year, then past 1 yr plus no prob except not much power and high fc. then abt 20 days ago, aircon got hot air, and could hear 'water gushing around' type of sound in bonnet. after car cooled down at night, opened radiator to see and had to top up ~3.5 litre of water before it was full!! next day drove to workshop but after checking half day told me can't find any leak and told me monitor first... for a week, i everyday checked radiator water level twice and always full. my mech laughed, so i didn't bother anymore. Then yest on way home, heard funny sound and later going into basement carpark could feel car vibrating and hear like got water boiling and streaming through narrow pipe... slowly parked and 2 hr later, went check again and had to top up abt 2.7 litre of water. this morning before went work, initially checked ok, but after car moved off, could hear water gushing sound again, then when stopped and opened radiator again, could pour in another about 600 ml... Then this afternoon, and at night after work, both times still full... anyone knows what could be the problem and what could be the solution? tks....

  7. Situations like this can easily 擦枪走火 degenerate into something unthinkable.... Hope cooler heads prevails. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1227887/1/.html Japan, Taiwan fire water cannons near disputed islands Posted: 25 September 2012 1332 hrs TOKYO: Coastguard vessels from Japan and Taiwan duelled with water cannons on Tuesday after dozens of Taiwanese boats escorted by patrol ships sailed into waters around Tokyo-controlled islands. Japanese coastguard ships sprayed water at the fishing vessels, footage on national broadcaster NHK showed, with the Taiwanese patrol boats retaliating by directing their own high-pressure hoses at the Japanese ships. The large-scale breach of what Japan considers sovereign territory -- one of the biggest since WWII -- is the latest escalation in a row over ownership of the islands that pits Tokyo against Beijing and Taipei. The intrusion complicates the already volatile territorial dispute with China. Taiwan has said that officers aboard some of the patrol ships sent to the area are fully-armed elite coastguard personnel. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a press conference that by 9:00am (0000 GMT) eight Taiwanese coastguard and 40 fishing boats were in Japanese waters. "We have made contact with the Taiwan authorities, and told them that they cannot enter our territorial waters," he said. A spokesman for Taiwan's coastguard confirmed that nearly 60 boats got close to the islands, some coming within three nautical miles -- well inside the 12-nautical-mile territorial exclusion zone. Japan's coastguard said all vessels left territorial waters a few hours later. The boats are part of a fleet that left Taiwan on Monday, vowing to stake their claim to islands where they say they have ancestral fishing rights. More than 60 fishing boats flying Taiwanese flags left Suao, a port in northeast Taiwan, at 0700 GMT Monday, with 300 fishermen and 60 reporters on board. Taiwan's coastguard sent at least 10 patrol boats alongside the vessels. "We'll do everything to protect our fishermen. We do not rule out using force to fight back if Japan were to do so," Wang Chin-wang, head of the Coast Guard Administration, said in parliament. Japan administers the uninhabited, but strategically well-positioned archipelago under the name Senkaku. Beijing says it has owned the islands for centuries and calls them Diaoyu. Taiwan also claims the islands, which lie around 200 kilometres (125 miles) from its coast. Ownership of the islands has become an important tenet of identity for all three claimants; the possible presence of energy reserves in the nearby seabed adds to the mix. The last large intrusion into Japanese waters was in 1996, according to a spokesman at the Tokyo headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard. He said at that time, 41 ships carrying activists from Hong Kong and Taiwan entered waters around the islands with the intention of asserting sovereignty. Chen Chun-sheng, the head of the Suao Fishermen Association, said at the weekend: "Diaoyutai has been our traditional fishing ground for centuries. We pledge to use our lives to protect it or we'd disgrace our ancestors." Fujimura said Japan was handling Tuesday's situation as delicately as it could. "All in all, we must continue to take utmost caution for policing of the areas surrounding the Senkaku islands. Agencies concerned must continue to closely coordinate their actions," he said. "Japan's position is that, in light of good Japan-Taiwan relations, we must solve the issue peacefully. We wish to respond calmly." Relations between Japan and China, meanwhile, have scraped long-unseen lows in recent weeks following Tokyo's nationalisation of three of the islands, which it bought from a private Japanese landowner. Several days of sometimes violent protests erupted in cities across China, where Japanese businesses were targeted by rioters. Japan's coastguard said on Monday that of two of China's maritime surveillance ships had spent seven hours in territorial waters around Uotsurijima, the largest island in the chain. Two fisheries patrol boats briefly also entered the 12-nautical-mile zone around the chain, the coastguard said. Four marine surveillance ships and two fisheries patrol boats were in contiguous waters as of 9:00am Tuesday (0000 GMT), according to the coastguard. None of the Chinese ships sent to the area belongs to the military. Both types of vessel are government-owned and used to enforce Chinese law in domestic waters. - AFP/al

  9. Background: Installed a reputable tuning box two days ago. After install did 3 cold starts, another few warm start. Travelled around 100km with no issue at all. In fact car has never been so smooth. Did about 30km of spirited driving at lim chu kang yesterday 4am. Power improvement is exceptional. Today:Had a cold start in the morning, no problem. Nothing abnormal. Then followed by another 2 warm starts, plus some short journey in between. Then wash car AND ahem, radiator using hose. Somehow the water trapped in the radiator was blown onto engine bay by the fan. Car still drive normally and was shifted to dry area. Then I went on to reposition my tuning box without touching any connectors. After which the car could still start, idle and rev normally to 2k rpm. So close hood and go home. 1 hour later want to go out. Car could start but few seconds only the engine will stall. Repeated 3 times and finally just press accelerator a bit to keep it going. Few seoncds later engine can idle liao. More water was sprayed onto the engine when the radiator fan started going...wiped dry. Car no abnormality. Drives and idles normally. So my problem with the idle was more possibly caused by tuning box or the water?
  10. Saw someone washing his Altis by spraying water directly at the engine bay? Won't spoilt ?

  12. Given that Singaporeans are being exhorted to have more babies, I was curious how many children can be attributed to our leaders. I found out that Singapore's parliament is pretty fertile - from the info I have to hand there are 2.01 children per parliamentarian. That's 199 in all. Well done folks :-) I also found out that 89 of the 99 MPs are married (counting widowers), And of those that list their religion 24 are Christian, 10 are Catholic / Roman Catholic 6 are Free Thinkers 12 Follow Islam, 8 are Buddhist 1 Taoist 1 Hindu. 1 "Chinese folk" The remaining 34 are not specified (if they follow a religion at all) Note: I compiled the info from gov.sg by looking at the individual MP Curriculum Vitae - I hope that I haven't made any transcription or counting errors. If I have, I very sincerely apologise.

  15. Barely six months after a corpse was found in a water tank on the roof of a Woodlands housing block, a Vietnamese woman was found dead at the foot of the same block. Chinese evening dailies Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao reported that the victim, Truong Thi Ngoh Anh, 26, fell from Blk 686B, Woodlands Street 73, at around 2am this morning. She was found naked and died four hours later after she was rushed to the hospital. She is believed to have fallen from the sixth floor. The newspapers also reported that her bra, clothes and personal possessions such as a black handbag and a pink mobile phone were found near her body. It is not known how her belongings ended up at the bottom of the block. According to Lianhe Wanbao, Ms Truong does not live at the block and is in Singapore on a social visit pass. Shin Min Daily News claims that she is a prostitute. A resident living on the 14th floor and known only as Ms Lee, said that she heard a very loud crashing sound. "I was watching movies on my mobile phone and was plugged in to my earphones but I could still hear the sound, so you can imagine how loud it was," said Ms Lee. Police have classified the case as unnatural death and questioned a man living on the sixth floor. The man, who is in his 30s, was singled out by residents as he was frequently spotted bringing different women home in the middle of the night, reported Lianhe Wanbao. During investigations, he brought plainclothes officers to a rubbish dump at Blk 960C to look for evidence. Residents told Lianhe Wanbao that a family of five live at the man's house, including an old couple. They also said that the women he brings home are usually foreign young women who look Filipino or Chinese. Link

  18. CNA News report : View CCTV images of flood-prone areas on PUB's website Posted: 29 March 2012 1343 hrs SINGAPORE: From Thursday, the public can find out which areas have been hit by floods by checking closed-circuit television (CCTV) images on national water agency PUB's website. The images are from 24 flood-prone areas and hotspots islandwide, including areas such as Orchard Road, Shenton Way, Bukit Timah Road, Upper Thomson, Veerasamy Road, Tampines St 81 and Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. PUB said the images will be updated every five minutes. There are currently 65 CCTVs installed at areas which are flood-prone or have recently experienced flash floods. PUB said the 24 selected CCTVs are located at roads with higher traffic flow. The agency said the CCTV images will help to improve public preparedness as part of Singapore's overall flood management effort. Mr William Yeo, PUB's deputy director of Catchment and Waterways said, "We have installed CCTVs at various locations to help us better monitor real-time site conditions during heavy rainstorms. "This enables us to deploy manpower on site faster in the event of a flash flood and provide more timely updates to the public." Members of the public can also obtain information and updates about flash floods via SMS alerts, PUB's Facebook page and Twitter account. The public can also tune in to radio broadcasts for flash flood alerts. - CNA/cc so during heavy rain, stop vehicle by the side and surf the Net .... 20. Did a stupid move two days ago: placed my iPhone 4 next to a glass of water and when moving my right hand accidentally hit the glass and toppled it to cause the water inside to splash over my battered but trusty phone. In a panic quickly removed the external cover to find that inside the cover also got water. The phone display still looked ok then. Hum liao siao liao jia chao liao.... Next used my T-shirt to dry the phone while at the same time switched my brain cells on to be on NOS mode... My follow-up actions are described as follows: 1) Set phone's Auto-Lock to Never; 2) Connected phone to charger; 3) Placed phone on top of my SH decoder which was switched on; These steps are to heat up the phone and hopefully dry up any water or vapour which might have seeped in and I left this desperate set-up like that for about 5 hrs. Then the moment of truth.... While still connected to the charger I activated a games app which was my present fav Shake Spears. when there was no music though the app started out normal and went to start mode. Tried other apps and same thing happened - Bo Siah!!!! Luckily the ringing sounds ok when I tested it so the speaker seemed no affected. Bo bian left the same set-up as it was until early morning then tried again and... SUCCESS!!!!!!! This time round there was music coming out when playing game apps. HURRAY!!! LESSON LEARNT: Never placed your phone, SMART or not, next to any liquid in a glass. Heck, it is better not to place ANY sensitive electronic stuff next to any glass containing any liquid. Until today still keeping my fingers crossed... Or maybe it's time to upgrade my outdated iPhone hor?
