  1. KUALA LUMPUR - A gay Malaysian pastor said Monday he had held a wedding banquet with his American partner despite earlier outrage by conservatives in the Muslim-majority country opposed to their union. Ngeo Boon Lin, who has authored a number of books on gay and other issues under the name Ouyang Wen Feng, said he held the private, traditional Chinese wedding celebration at a restaurant in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. "I wanted to inspire others to speak the truth and to stand up for our rights," he told AFP. Ngeo married his partner, African-American Broadway musical producer Phineas Newborn III, last year in New York, where they live. That came shortly after same-sex marriages were legalised there. Homosexuality remains a largely taboo subject in Malaysia - sodomy is punishable by 20 years in prison - and Ngeo came under attack from Islamic and Christian figures alike when he first announced his wedding plans. Ngeo said it was important for him to hold the banquet in Malaysia to show that gays should not be cowed. "The answer is simple, namely we should not threaten others and I must show to others that people don't like to be threatened either," Ngeo, 42, said in emailed comments to AFP from the couple's honeymoon in Vietnam. He said the banquet was attended by at least 250 friends from Malaysia and abroad and the couple faced no opposition in arranging it. Ngeo plans to return to Malaysia later in the week before returning to New York later in the month. Ngeo faced outrage and threats when he opened the first gay-friendly church just outside Kuala Lumpur in 2007. He regularly returns to Malaysia and elsewhere in Asia to promote gay awareness. Influential Malaysian religious figures and political conservatives remain vehemently opposed to the growing prominence of the country's gay community. Authorities last year banned an annual gay-themed festival, featuring gay-oriented films, concerts and forums, while a prominent religious body in 2008 issued a fatwa against lesbian sex. After Ngeo announced his wedding plans last year, Islamic Affairs Minister Jamil Khir Baharom denounced same-sex marriages as "extremism that... will create social problems". Other officials and some Christian leaders also condemned Ngeo's nuptials. Ngeo said gays should not let anything "paralyse us or scare us to silence". "We should not be short-sighted and discouraged by unwanted backlash... We should not succumb to fear!" he said in his email. http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...806-363832.html
  2. TAOYUAN, Taiwan - Two women tied the knot on Saturday in Taiwan's first same-sex Buddhist wedding, a move rights groups hope will help make the island become the first place in Asia to legalise gay marriage. Fish Huang and her partner You Ya-ting, both wearing traditional white bridal gowns, said "I do" in front of a Buddha statue and exchanged prayer beads rather than rings in a monastery in Taoyuan, in northern Taiwan. Nearly 300 Buddhists chanted sutras to seek blessings for the couple, both aged 30. Shih Chao-hui, a female Buddhist master who presided over the ritual, hailed it as a historic moment. "We are witnessing history. The two women are willing to stand out and fight for their fate... to overcome social discrimination," said Shih, a well-known advocate for social justice. "Some people might find it astounding (a woman performing the ceremony) but Buddhism does not engage in ideological struggles and I am used to strange looks from my own experience in the social movement," she said. The couple's parents were notably absent from the ceremony, in an indication of the pressure facing some homosexuals and their families.

  9. As a guest maybe sim tia about the ang bao and also felt sorry for the wedded couple but if you were THE couple imagine this unthinkable situation :o : From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...yatt_hotel.html Posted on 27 Apr 2012 Wedding guests told to go home after Hyatt Hotel ballroom plunged into darkness STOMPer CK was attending a wedding dinner at Hyatt Hotel yesterday when the fire alarm sounded and the whole hotel was plunged into darkness halfway through. The guests were then told to go home. Said CK: "Wedding dinner in the dark at Hyatt Hotel. "The fire alarm started to sound when the fourth dish was served. "It was around 9.30pm and we were halfway through the eight-course dinner. "The emergency lights came on, but they couldn't serve anymore food. "Only 30 minutes later, did the service staff light some candles at the tables. "We waited for about an hour until the hotel said we had to go home as they couldn't do anything. It was 10.30pm. "Some of the wedding guests were quite angry, but none left until the bridal couple left at 10.30pm. "The couple and the hotel are in talks over this matter."

  11. STOMPer Ryan was unhappy that he received a parking fine on his friend's wedding day. Two other cars received summons as well -- all for parking on double yellow lines. The STOMPer recounts the incident: "I got a big gift from HDB this morning. Three parking fine tickets for the bridal and brother's car. "We were up at the house and saw from the balcony that we had received tickets, while he was half-way through the tea ceremony. "This happened at Woodlands Drive 71, at 10.15am this morning. "All three of the cars involved in the wedding got a $100 fine for parking on double yellow lines. "I think the parking wardens were quite insensitive to do something like this on a happy occasion. "This really spoilt my day. I later told the groom about it and he was quite sad about it too."

    Royal wedding

    Anyone watching "live" telecast? Yamnz.
  20. Whilst Singaporeans are stuck in their wells trying to get out... the rest of the world are interested in another event happening today. The Royal Wedding of Price William and soon-to-be Princess Katherine Middleton. I think this event deserves a thread of its own - and some publicity.. cos I know my daughter and all her schoolmates have no interest whatsoever in the elections, but some of them will cut school to watch this royal event on TV. (which will be telecast live on Mediacorpse Channel 5 TODAY at 3pm). http://www.officialroyalwedding2011.org/
  21. The two young Britons are getting hitched on Friday, April 29th, 2011. To mark the occasion, the groom, one William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor, better known as Prince William of Wales, and his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton, have been "honored" by exotic car customizer, Project Kahn. The Project Kahn Wedding Commemorative Maybach 57 (what, no Bentleys or Rolls-Royces lying around the shop, guys?) is a blatant PR grab "tribute" to the new royal couple that will have nothing at all to do with the royal wedding itself reside at Project Kahn's Bradford headquarters. The touched-up super Benz features Kahn-designed 22-inch wheels, smoked glass, an upgraded interior and darkened taillamps. It also wears the license plate, "4 HRH", which means For His Royal Highness. The ultimate commemorative vehicle to mark HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding day. Previous royal weddings have often been marked by commemorative stamps, coins and a range of memorabilia. However, Afzal Kahn has released the ultimate commemorative item to mark HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding day. The pearl white Project Kahn Maybach 57 complete with the regal-sounding number plate: 4 HRH
