  1. Hi, have the above prob on a 2yr old colt plus. 40k mileage. Initial dianogsis is the aircon clutch (magnet plate) spoiled. Was quoted $470 by a aircon shop in woodlands to replace a new one. Currently working intermittently. Gotta on/off again if its not cutting in/out properly. Has anyone come across this before? And if the quoted price is reasonable? If not, any other places where i can get it done at a better price? Any advise appreciated!
  2. Major security risk at Nusajaya By NELSON BENJAMIN and MEERA VIJAYAN JOHOR BARU: Kota Iskandar, the sprawling new state administrative capital in Nusajaya, faces a major security risk as it is located near a Singapore firing range. The range, inside the Sarimbun Camp, is operated by the Singapore Armed Forces and involves the use of live ammunition from tanks and aircraft including helicopter gunships. Sarimbun is located about 1km away from Lim Chu Kang Road in Singapore where Japanese soldiers crossed the Johor Straits in a fleet of small boats and successfully landed on the island around midnight on Feb 8, 1942. There have been instances when the explosions at the range have caused vibrations on the Malaysian side less than 2km away. Too close for comfort: An aerial view of Nusajaya showing the close proximity of Kota Iskandar(foreground) to the Sarimbun firing range, marked X. Government servants, who have been moving into buildings at Kota Iskandar in recent weeks, have also expressed worries about stray bullets or shells. Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian said he was aware of the risks posed by the firing range and had raised the security issue at the Johor State Assembly even before the area was developed. He hoped the Government would discuss the matter with Singapore and set up a military base on Pulau Merabong to beef up security around Kota Iskandar.

  4. Snake bites man sitting on toilet bowl Taiwanese man felt a 'knife-like pain' when he sat down Mon, May 11, 2009 Reuters TAIPEI - A Taiwanese man became a sitting target for a snake, which bit his penis as sat on the toilet at his rural home, local media reported on Monday. "As soon as he sat down, he suddenly felt a knife-like pain and reacted instinctively by standing up," the China Times said. "When he looked down, he saw the big snake." The 51-year-old man, from Nantou County, was under medical care with minor injuries, a director at Puli Christian Hospital said. "As soon as he has passed the risk of infection, he can go," the director, who declined to be named, said. "A snake's mouth isn't always clean." Local television images showed the black and yellow reptile, reportedly a species of rat snake, being uncoiled and plucked slowly from the toilet bowl. Snakes regularly enter rural homes in Taiwan and other sub-tropical regions of Asia.

  8. This is not a flame bait or thread, neither am i saying that female drivers do not make good drivers, i understand that there are quite a few sisters in MCF, I am not referring to you all, just want to relate my incident today... So apparently i was on the expressway driving home, was on the second lane, with a road hogger infront of me driving at 85km/h. The vehicle, a van with around 10 FTs sitting in the back of the van was quite a distracting sight. Lane 1 had around 3 cars, one infront, the second near me, the third was quite far behind. It was initially quite safe to filter to my right, but decided to play safe and turn on my signal. Amazingly, when i turn on my signal the car near to me, sped up from behind. But the driver did not accelerate infront of me. She kept her speed constant to mine... Nevermind, I checked lane 3, quite empty, overtook from left instead... Then, i was at bukit timah along beauty world behind there, theres this tunnel. So there was this Lancer EX on my right. As it was a two lane road, i took the left lane and I was rushing for time ( needed the toilet ). so as you know, the tunnel has quite a few bends, both of us were driving at around 65-70km/h. (Yes i know the speed limit there is 60.) Both of our cars were now side by side, as we entered the first turn, i slowed down by a bit, front half of my car was parallel to her back half of the car. so as she negotiated her first turn she ate into my lane and almost brushed against my car. I swerved abit and horned... Lucky i didnt crash, but i saw who was behind the wheel... the best part was she didnt look apologetic at all. she stared at me as if i was the one in the wrong... So, should all drivers be at the very least checked if they know how to check blindspots and also turn properly?

  11. IT was like any other routine visit by a vice-principal to a class during the Pastoral Care period. TNP PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: GAVIN FOO But one student suddenly went berserk. It happened when the vice-principal, a woman, visited a Secondary 4 Express class at a school in the east on 2 Apr. While she was addressing the class, the student suddenly stood up and threw a file and then a chair in her direction. He also rushed forward as though he wanted to hit her, but was quickly restrained by his classmates. No one was hurt in the incident. A student from the class, who did not want to be named, told The New Paper that the vice-principal was 'scolding' the class about their poor common test results. She asked those who were confident of scoring at least five O levels or of making it to polytechnic to stand up. All except two boys in the class stood up. The student said: 'She then told the form teacher to take down their names and call their parents.' She told the class to sit down and write down their plans for achieving their goals. The form teacher walked over to one of the two boys who did not stand up. She told him to take out a piece of paper and start writing. It was then that the boy suddenly stood up and threw a file and subsequently a chair in the direction of the vice-principal. This account was verified by another student in the class. She said: 'She (the vice-principal) was trying to help us. She said that since it was our final year, she hoped everyone could get into poly.' The New Paper understands that this was the first time the vice-principal visited the class this year. When contacted, the school confirmed that the incident had taken place. However, it did not answer queries on the details of what happened. Principal confirms it In a written response, the school principal said: 'Together with the form teacher, the vice-principal guided the class to take stock of their progress in their studies, and to plan how they would achieve their targets at the upcoming mid-year exams as well as the year-end O-level exams. 'During this time, a boy suddenly stood up and threw a file and a chair towards the front of the classroom. His classmates quickly restrained him. The discipline master and school counsellor were also brought in to calm and counsel the boy. No one was hurt in the incident.' We are not naming the school or those involved, to avoid causing further distress to the boy, who is said to be upset about how he had behaved. But what caused him to snap? The New Paper understands that he had some emotional issues which, however, were under control this year. According to the school, the boy has 'some background with handling emotions and has been referred for counselling'. So could it have been the stress of the latest tests? Or the results he had just received? Or the manner in which he was being addressed at that point in time? The student The New Paper spoke to said the boy later 'admitted to others that he didn't know what he was doing at that time'. He added: 'But I don't think you can judge a person's character simply by whether they go to the polytechnic or junior college.' 'Boy apologised' The principal said: 'The boy showed remorse and regret for his behaviour, and apologised to the class and the vice-principal. He also told the (form teacher) that he was grateful for the support from the school, his teachers and classmates in helping him move on.' His parents are understood to be working with the school to provide the boy with the necessary care and guidance. They declined to be interviewed by The New Paper. A teacher of the school, who did not want to be named, felt the boy alone was not to blame for the incident. He told The New Paper: 'As teachers, we don't approve of this act. We feel the boy should be punished for it. 'But if only the boy is punished, it's unfair. The vice-principal owes the student an apology because she jumped to conclusions.' The boy is receiving counselling at the moment and it is understood that no punishment has been meted out yet. IS our education in school getting more and more stressful. It seems to me that every other month we hear of such unpleasent news. Was the V-principal sarcastic when addressing the students that cause one of them to snap. This reminded me of the incident in NTU.

  14. Hi, I am posting on the behalf on my friend who owned a 1.6 subaru hatchback. He has a <6 mths hachback, but has knocking sound at the rear when turning either right or left in the third mths. The sound is louder when turning U-turns. Twice he has went to Image @ TPY for checkup, yet the SA is unable to resolved the problem. The SA even ask him to close one eye and accept it as the SA claimed my friend is not the first car which is having this problem... So like if there is any subaru car owners or any other car owners who are/were facing this problem before? And what is being done to rectify the problem? Or is there is good workshop to recommend where I ask my friend to send his car for further checkup... Please advise. Thanks you
  15. Had a lunch yesterday with a Malaysian associate and he told me Malaysian don't treat cars like god like we do in Singapore. For minor accident like hitting bumper, usually if just superficial scratches, both parties will just walk away from the incident. If the problem is more serious, usually on the spot settlement is RM300 at most. A Singapore friend recently hit a rear bumper of a Malaysian car infront, slighly dent and scratch to the Myvi's rear bumper. The Malaysian driver made some noises but didn't persue with the matter. I think in Singapore, even for minor accidents, you will see drivers dispute until like want to kill each other . Perhaps this is why our insurance premium is high and getting higher . Regards,

  20. Hey guys, I just wanna ask for some advice. For example you are interested in a unit from a dealer in SGcarmart, how do you calculate how much discount you should ask for? Should it be in hundreds or thousands ? For example, this almost new car below, is almost 30k off the new car price, seems like a good deal? Can I still ask for discount? http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.ph...485&DL=1059 Any input is greatly appreciated.
  21. In the Environment Protection and Management Act, Chapter 94A, Section 12 (5) and 77, Environment Protection and Managment (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, it states: PART V OFFENCES 19 Smoky motor vehicles 20 Excessive noise 21 Stationary motor vehicles 21A Duty to provide information 22 Restriction of motor vehicles on roads 23 Penalty Stationary motor vehicles (1) Subject to paragraph (2), the driver of every motor vehicle shall, when the vehicle is stationary for reasons other than traffic conditions, stop the engine of or other machinery attached to or forming part of the vehicle. (2) Nothing in paragraph (1) shall apply to the examination or working of the machinery attached to or forming part of a motor vehicle where any such examination or working is rendered necessary by any failure or derangement of the machinery or where the machinery is required to be worked for some ancillary purpose. (3) Any person who fails to comply with paragraph (1) shall be guilty of an offence. Penalty 23. Any person who is guilty of an offence under any provision of these Regulations shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $2,000 and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000. Clearly, it is an offence not to turn off the engine when your vehicle is stationary, for example, you run off to buy 4D while your wife or children wait in the car with the engine on. Another example you see all the time is at the school gates, parents waiting for their child to finish school, sat in their cars with engine on. Prehaps this law is obscure which is why we even see motorist leaving the engine on while refuelling at the petrol station. Maybe NEA should start a campaign to educate motorist about this.

  24. I booked a used vehicle(non-passenger) in early august @ 55K from a reputable dealer. vehicle age is under 3yrs. despite higher than normal interest rate, i agreed to the deal cause it's something that I need for business use. now after about 1month+ later, dealer called said unable to get loan at decent amount, only able to get 30k MAX. There is NO way I'm able to fork out 20k cash and the dealer is asking me to find my own loan. Although I check a few finance company but without a bank giving approval, finance company not loaning. In this case, I like to check with fellow motorists here, what are the choices do I have?? I going to ask my deposit back if they die die cannot get loan in the range of 50k.. Do I have a case against them?? Since they can't secure a loan for me but during the neg time, they say No PROBLEM... they work with Hong Leong, DBS, UOB, many many banks... help needed.. thanks
