  1. NSman who died had not submitted medical certificate By Valarie Tan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 02 October 2008 1702 hrs SINGAPORE: Investigations into the death of full-time National Serviceman Joe Foo Wei Rong found that he had been given medical leave two days before he died but he did not inform officials about it. The Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that a medical certificate dated September 28 was found in Private Foo's personal bunk cupboard after his death. The medical centre had no documentation of his medical certificate. Soldiers are required to submit certifications of their medical conditions at the centre. Private Foo had seen a doctor at the Singapore General Hospital on Sunday. He was supposed to rest from September 28 to 29 for "sprains and strains of the knee and leg", and to be given light duties for the subsequent four days. It is not known why Private Foo did not report his medical condition, but investigations are currently underway and a full report is expected in eight weeks. The former Singapore Polytechnic student died on Tuesday while doing chin-ups at Lim Chu Kang camp. Friends and relatives remember Private Foo as an athletic young man who enjoyed basketball, and his death came as a shock to many who turned up at his wake on Thursday. Private Foo is the third full-time National Serviceman to have died in camp this year. Recruit Andrew Cheah and Officer Cadet Clifton Lam suffered the same fate in June. All three were former students at polytechnics where physical activities are not compulsory, unlike junior colleges where exercise is part of the curriculum. Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs Indranee Rajah, who is also the MP of Tanjong Pagar GRC, said: "Obviously it needs to be studied more deeply and carefully, but to me, it does seem to me that before anybody goes in for NS, the preconditioning is important. "And as far as possible, from secondary school, all the way to the time they enter National Service for BMT (Basic Military Training), it's important that the levels of fitness should be maintained." The polytechnics that were contacted said they have many sporting activities in place for students. Singapore Polytechnic says an estimated 15 per cent of total student population take part in sports. Half of its 2007 graduating cohort sat for the National Physical Fitness Award tests, an increase from 35 per cent in the previous year. the blaming games has started since the parents of the deceased NSF blamed SAF for letting his son attending physical training even though there was a valid MC. SAF conducted investigation and found out that the deceased did not submit the MC to MO. So now everyone is going to find a black sheep. SAF and an MP seems to put the blame on polys for not being able to precondition male enlistees during poly terms...KNN ...might as well blame the deceased and parents for allowing the son to attend poly in the 1st place...or might as well blame the whole govt for setting up polys in the early days..... it is individual responsibility to condition own body and keep fit to maintain healthy...

  5. Any ever encounter when ur car suddenly runs out of petrol and there is a petrol kiosk nearby? Just want to find out if i can buy let's say $50 worth of petrol off the counter and still get the relevant on-site and credit card discounts?
  6. Just wondering what do you guys do when you leave your car at the workshop for servicing/repairs that take just a few hours?
  7. If budget is not a concern and you dont know the owner and the history of the ride, how old a car will you not consider? > 3 yrs?, etc..... i am referring to conti car in this instance.
  8. Last week, I installed a chassis bar (it's from Cusco and made for my vehicle model) to the front of my undercarriage (see attached pic below). It was fine when I left the workshop but by the 3rd day I can hear intermittent "tok tok" sound when I turn very slowly (<10km/h). When back to the workshop and they told me it's the bar doing its job. But nonetheless they took it out and reinstalled again and everything was fine until ... yes you've guessed it ... the third day when the "tok tok" sound returns. Anyone has the same experience? Is this normal? It's just a little annoying whenever I'm parking.

  10. When guys first see you, they don't care about your character http://justwoman.asiaone.com/Just%2BWoman/...0908-86528.html IT seems the obsession with beauty is alive and well among Singaporeans. Ms Charmaine Choo, 21, for example, feels that her external appearance is crucial to her life. As a personal assistant, she feels that first impressions count. 'If you are well-dressed, people will think you have self-discipline. And if you dress poorly, people will think you're very lazy. 'If someone can't be bothered about their own appearance, how can they be trusted with other things?' Looks matter, especially when it comes to relationships. Ms Choo said: 'When guys first see you, they don't care about your character. Only your looks.' So what does beauty mean to her? 'Silky hair and big eyes with long eyelashes,' she replied. For Ms Choo, Japanese actor Takashi Kaneshiro is the most beautiful person in the world because 'his eyes are very expressive' and 'he looks humble'. Most of Ms Choo's beauty inspirations come from the movies, where she notices what the stars wear and how they are made up. Inspiration also comes from people-watching at Orchard Road, the Shenton Way area, and even at her neighbourhood coffee shop. For Ms Choo, beauty is the source of her confidence, and although she doesn't like men staring at her constantly, she wants them to look at her 'a little'. Ms Choo who spends $200 a month on three to four dresses, said: 'It's not just for the guys, lah. It's also for me. When I look good, I feel good.' When asked if she would consider other definitions of beauty, she replied: 'No. It's just my personality. I just like nice things.' She said: 'Honestly, I feel that people who enter this (Aware) competition are deceiving themselves a bit. Maybe at this point in time, their presentation might not be important to them. 'But later on, surely they will find a reason to be beautiful. Don't tell me they don't want to look good on their wedding day?' Hmm.... no other definitions of beauty... Beauty as a source of confidence... Placing a high priority on looks in relationships...
  11. Hi all, Got a new Toyota Fielder for about 1 month now. Realised a few issues 1) hard to start when hot. Have to keep the ignition key turned to "start" for a long time to start the car. But when cold, it starts quickly. Does anyone with Toyota Axio experience the same problem? 2) No power Not sure if it's because I'm not used to a CCVT gearbox? Used to be using mostly manual gearbox. Or if I'm not used to the "ECO" mode? Coz everytime when I depress the accelerator, it revs (got power) then very quickly within a few secs, it'll drop to low RPM and the car will be "cruising" but thats still at very low speed. It's like suitable for driving in the neighbourhood. If I depress more, then engine will roar and the power will come in. But I'm just not used to hearing so loud engine noise but yet feel the power isn't really transferred to the gears. On some autogearbox cars, when the car revs, you can feel the pickup like a manual car. But this toyota...not sure if it's the design or all 1.5L autobox are like that....or it's because it's economical... Any comments?

  13. For Singapore next ERP system, current cellular mobile systems or third generation wireless communication could be employed and the mobile set could be embedded in the IU. As 2.5 Generation wireless communication, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) has quicker session setup, permanent connection, lower cost, higher data rate performance[5]. Furthermore, it is IP based data transmission so the transceiver is unnecessary in the management center, which is connected with Internet. It is better choice for the next ERP system and can be easily upgraded into the next generation wireless communication. http://www.gisdevelopment.net/application/...t/ma06_28pf.htm
  14. Hi guys, I have a Proton wira (overseas - not JB not SG) which I've been troubleshooting a problems for quite some time. After changing a few parts - solved some other problems and now it's left with a engine dying problem when the engine is hot + idling. Now I've narrowed down to the ignition - plug wires or the ignition dist. So my plan is to buy them and replace it. Can anyone advise how much would a distributor (or ignition coil) cost for a Proton Wira 1.5A? Year around 2000. I was quoted S$500 (overseas) just for parts when I visited 1 workshop. Quite shocked. Thought coils should be quite cheap....somemore it's proton. Not long ago, I DIY changed my mum's MB E200's Coil on Plugs. Each coil only cost $30. x 4 = $120. So cheap. Think I must have been quoted a extorbitant price for that proton coil. Will check the spare parts shop locally in SG. I also called my JB contact...they said it cost about RM600. Any idea how much it cost in SG?
  15. Hi Guys, My friend's JVC AVX810, and another AVX800 would not turn on the rear camera when they reverse with the units off. When the units are on, no problem , can see. My Smart-I and many other cheaper China units have no issues, meaning, even with my Smart-I hu off, when I engage 'R', the unit switch on by itself to display the rear camera view. Anyway to rectify their issues with the JVC?
  16. Thought this is a great tip to share with everyone, even though the odds are against that happening. But hey... accidents are by nature unpredictable! :) The general theory is that when you drive your car into a pond, lake or sea, you'd wait for the car to sink totally underwater (and remove your cashcard in the meantime... haha!). This is to allow the water pressure within and outside the car to equalize and stabilize, so that you can open the car door easily. But... is that true? Top Gear did the test and found that it wasn't the best way, as the water pressure might take up to a minute to stabilize. Given that not everyone can hold their breath for a minute (and not panic), this practice might not save your life. The best way as Top Gear discovered, is to undo your seat beat and open the car door as soon as you can, and get out before the car sinks. Watch these clips... it might save your life someday! (part 1) (part 2) P.S: During the test, they also found that the central locking goes crazy when the car sinks. So you might be locked in when that happens.
  17. Just wondering when is it? I am waiting with regards to the announcement due about child support the swedish way as promised by Wong cant sing.

  20. Aug 6, 2008 Indian pilgrim knocked unconscious in stampede wakes up in morgue NEW DELHI - AN INDIAN pilgrim knocked unconscious in a stampede that killed 150 people woke up in a morgue as doctors prepared to perform a postmortem examination on him, a newspaper reported on Wednesday. Mange Ram, 19, lost consciousness in the stampede triggered by rumours of a landslide that caused panic among thousands of people climbing a steep mountain path, the report said. Mr Ram told the Times of India he awoke in a hospital morgue after Sunday's tragedy at the Naina Devi shrine in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. 'When I woke up, I was in the middle of a row of bodies waiting for postmortem,' he said. 'My throat was parched and I asked for water. Towering over me the doctors and nursing staff at Anandpur Sahib Civil Hospital looked dazed.' 'They must have been surprised to see a dead man come alive like that,' he said. Sat Pal Aggarwal, a doctor on the pilgrimage, said few checks were carried out to see if victims were alive and might have been saved. 'People were dumped quite haphazardly into trucks without following any procedure or checking if they were alive,' the paper quoted him as saying. Despite the huge loss of life, the pilgrimage continued only hours after the corpses had been cleared. The temple, devoted to the goddess Naina Devi, sits on a hilltop in the Himalayas and devotees must climb a narrow stairway to reach it. It has been the site of previous deadly accidents. Crowd control is poor in India and stampedes are common. Three years ago, 257 Hindu devotees, mainly women and children, were crushed to death in a stampede at a religious pilgrimage in western India. -- AFP Wonder what would happen if they had started to cut him up before he awoke?
