  5. Will this reverse the trend of luxury brands being top sellers?
  6. Offer COE rebates to families with special-needs members Published on Feb 07, 2013 2 1 0 Purchase this article for republication Buy SPH photos I APPLAUD the Government's efforts in restricting car ownership ("COE categories for cars could be reviewed"; yesterday). But while car ownership is generally perceived as a luxury, it is a necessity for some families. As a mother of an autistic child, taking my son for long rides on MRT trains or public buses is a challenge due to his heightened sensory sensitivity to noise and crowds. On long rides, he will often fuss or, worse, suffer a full meltdown to the annoyance of other commuters. Taking taxis for routine trips is very costly and hard to sustain for an average-income family. Many families with elderly members or those with mental and physical disabilities face the same problem. Improving Singapore's public transport network and accessibility is of little or no help to us. At the same time, there is a growing number of households with more than one car, often because they can afford them and not because they need them. To help those who really need a car, some changes could be made to the current system: Give priority and certificate of entitlement (COE) rebates to families with members who have special needs, for first-car ownership per household; Impose a flat COE rate on first-car ownership per household, with subsequent cars per household subjected to the bidding system; and Have a separate COE category for luxury cars. 7. How can he bully a 70 year old cleaner? http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...nd-break-pubic- A man who pushed a cleaner on the shoulder was jailed for one day and fined $1,500 on Monday. Sonny Lim, 53, admitted to using criminal force on Mr Tan Ton Siew, 70, at a coffeeshop on the night of Aug 20, last year. The court heard that Mr Tan was clearing some tables at the coffeeshop at Block 205, Bedok North St 1 when Lim shouted to him to clean his table. The cleaner told Lim that he would do so after clearing the utensils. Suddenly, Lim confronted Mr Tan and pushed his shoulder. Mr Tan fell backwards and landed on his buttocks. He called the police. Mr Tan sought medical attention and was subsequently found to have a broken left pubic bone. Lim told the court that he had apologised to the victim and made compensation, the amount of which is not known.

  15. Changing alimony laws will get women back to work: Source Straits Times Date 14 Dec 2012 IT IS perhaps timely to relook the long-standing alimony laws to encourage more women to return to work ("Keep kids in school till 7pm so mums can go to work?"; last Friday). In Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, alimony laws, along with other measures like extensive childcare facilities, serve to keep women in the workforce. Alimony is seldom granted except in certain circumstances where a spouse becomes financially needy upon a divorce. This sends a strong signal to women that they are responsible for their own finances after divorce. As such, most women continue working while having a family. In Singapore, however, the option of alimony is open to every married woman no matter how well off or highly educated she is. This safety net makes it less risky for her to quit her job to meet the needs of her family. Should her marriage fail, she can depend on alimony payment from her former husband to tide her over. Laws enacted to enforce alimony payment further strengthens the idea that staying home poses little financial risk. Alimony laws in Singapore were forged in the 60s when most women were homemakers. The economic situation of women has improved tremendously over the years. Many are now highly educated and pursuing successful careers. The laws need to move with the times. Access to alimony should be restricted to women from the low educational and income levels and when they could be in a dire financial situation upon divorce. This will send a strong message, especially to highly-educated women, that staying home would no longer be a viable option for them. Sulthan Niaz Source: Straits Times
