  1. You know, paying careful attention for oncoming vehicles while crossing the street is actually a pretty obvious thing to do. However, it seems that there will always be some people who are just ignorant enough that they tend to jaywalk. The woman in the accompanying video is a good yet unfortunate example. You see, when you jaywalk, not only are you putting your life in danger but also that of other people's. If a vehicle happens to be approaching while you are jaywalking, the driver of the vehicle will be forced to slam the brakes all of a sudden. As a result, other vehicles behind the vehicle approaching you may happen to hit it if the drivers fail to stop their cars at the right time. With that being said, do you actually realise how dangerous you are becoming by simply crossing the street without paying attention? Well, I won't lie to you, though. Most of us probably do jaywalk every once in a while. However, after watching the video, I shall always keep in mind to refrain from doing so as I value my life. I don't know what the woman was thinking when she started walking towards the middle of the street. Nonetheless, while she was crossing it halfway, she seemed to finally realise that she shouldn't have actually started crossing in the first place as it was nearly certain she would get trapped on the centre double line. Unfortunately, she decided to take the worst option, to turn back! Let me remind you, when you cross the street, especially if you're already halfway, you'll probably be better off going forward or halt when necessary rather than turning back. Turning back is very dangerous! Moreover, the woman in the video didn't watch out for any oncoming traffic prior to turning back. Well, I'll have to be honest with you. It didn't really come as a surprise seeing the woman get hit by the scooter. The scooter rider, however, didn't seem like he was paying attention, either. Had he paid more attention on the road ahead, he should, at least, have been able to decelerate. Furthermore, jaywalkers often have erratic behaviour that they may turn back or even jump when motorists least expect it.
  2. 欺山莫欺水。 Really gota be careful around waters, be it at swimming pool or at sea. Condolences to Mike Lie & RIP Irene Soon... From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...e_maldives.html Posted on 12 May 2013 S'porean woman drowns while snorkelling in the Maldives A 34-year-old Singaporean woman lost her life when she drowned in a snorkelling accident in the Maldives last Saturday (May 4). According to a report on The New Paper, insurance manager Irene Soon -- who was there on a five-day trip with her husband, Mr Mike Lie, to celebrate her recent promotion -- was snorkelling and opted to stay in the water to take more photos underwater. Mr Lie had gotten out of the water due to saltwater getting into his mask and nose. He then crossed over onto the shallow side of a pier that divided the lagoon, and stood there watching his wife. The 37-year-old financial planner's attention was then diverted for a while as he watched a group learning how to scuba dive for five minutes but when he turned back, he realised he had lost sight of her. Around that time, a German uncle and his nephew on the shore felt that something was wrong as Ms Soon's snorkelling tube was underwater, and swam out to check it out. Mr Lie then heard a commotion while making his way to the other side of the pier, and saw the nephew pulling his wife's body in. She was lying face down on the seabed, and her fingernails and toenails were purple. He tried calling out to her but she didn't respond. He also felt for her pulse, but got nothing. A medical examination by the police pronounced her dead from drowning. Her body was flown back to Singapore on Thursday morning (May 9). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, said that it was aware of the case, and has rendered consular assistance to Ms Soon's next-of-kin.

  7. This is an old case. Didn't know the outcome is so screwed up. A Lamborghini and a taxi crashed at Lau Pa Sat earlier this year, causing a pregnant woman to be trapped in the cab for an hour. After the accident, the woman gave birth to a premature baby and is now paralysed. At around midnight on April 1, a silver Lamborghini collided with a taxi at the junction of Shenton Way and Cross Street. A pregnant woman was trapped in the rear passenger seat, and it took SCDF personnel about an hour to free her. STOMPer Kelvin witnessed the rescue operation and said the taxi had been hit from behind as it was turning left. According to a New Paper report, the impact of the crash was so great that the Lamborghini's bonnet was crushed. The then eight months pregnant woman, who wants only to be known as Madam Ng, complained of pain in her spine as rescuers worked to free her from the taxi. She had to undergo an emergency caesarean section to deliver her baby when she arrived at Singapore General Hospital. Both mother and child survived, but Madam Ng was paralysed from the shoulders down. Her husband says that despite everything, the family is thankful that mother and child survived the accident, and they are also grateful to the SCDF, emergency response staff and doctors. STOMPer bee was saddened by the news and has this to say: "Can you imagine what Madam Ng must be going through? She was probably looking forward to the birth of her child, when this terrible accident happened. "Now, she has a newborn son, and she can't even hold him. It must be so heartbreaking. "And all drivers out there take note; please drive carefully and spare a thought for others, even if you don't treasure your own life."

  17. Nowadays criminals really have many excuses. There was also a local woman who was caught and released a few times by claiming to be a kleptomaniac. Another infamous excuse is bi-polar / depression. Next time I get caught for speeding, maybe I should say I am a speedophile?
