  2. http://www.ryot.org/how-hollywood-got-captain-phillips-dead-wrong/408561 What you won’t see in the movie trailer and what the mainstream media tends to ignore is why Somali piracy started in the first place: foreign companies are illegally over-fishing Somali waters and dumping large quantities of nuclear and hazardous waste off of Somalia’s coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_Somalia A United Nations report and several news sources have suggested that piracy off the coast of Somalia was caused in part by illegal fishing. According to the DIW and the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, the dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters by foreign vessels also severely constrained the ability of local fishermen to earn a living. In response, the fishermen began forming armed groups to stop the foreign ships. They eventually turned to hijacking commercial vessels for ransom as an alternate source of income.

  6. How would you expect MacRitchie nature trail to look like, smooth as Orchard Road..... yahoo news: Letter slamming MacRitchie running trail goes viral It takes one "strange" complain letter over a stone to set loose the earth-loving side of Singaporeans, it seems. A reader's letter published by The Straits Times on Saturday sparked major buzz over the weekend, receiving over 14,000 Facebook shares along with a slew of negative comments. Titled "Dangerous obstacles along MacRitchie trail", the letter was written by a Larry Quah Chai Koon, who seemed to be complaining about a fall he had while "exercising" at a nature trail in MacRitchie, at a slope towards the TreeTop Walk. According to his account, his "foot struck a protruding stone" before he "lost balance" and "crashed". His fall impacted his left shoulder, resulting in a "fractured left collarbone" two cracked ribs and "multiple lacerations". The writer then added, "Maintenance should be undertaken to remove protruding stones, branches and roots that may pose a danger to visitors." The letter stirred a storm of negative online comments defending the nature park; some even gave the writer tips on running at the nature trail. Nature defenders One commenter said, "Nature is undulating and full of hidden pitfalls

  9. I was reading http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/201...re-mrt-history/ and have been thinking... lots of policies in the early days were very good, but many have deteriorated or gone haywire now what has gone wrong? HDB: - took over the responsibilities of the previous bo-zho-gang Singapore Improvement Trust - established to resettle the farmers, villagers and low-income residents - to build affordable public housing for Singaporeans What has gone wrong? - supply-demand becomes a factor in the building of flats, instead of meeting the basic needs of residents - private developers taking part (DBSS), resulting in ridiculous sky high prices (the Tampines $888,000 flat was the big joke) - free market strategy leads to speculations and viewing HDB flats' as an investment tool MRT: - developed to improve the overall efficiency of public transport - to link up the new towns to the city, making travelling time shorter - to ease traffic congestions What has gone wrong? - top priority given to revenues, profits and shareholders' interests, neglecting the basic needs of commuters - lack of maintenance leads to frequent breakdowns - population explosion leads to more MRT lines needed, which in turn need higher ridership (more people) to support its operation and revenues Hawker Centres: - established to resettle street hawkers, improving hygienic conditions and illegal hawking - to provide affordable food for the masses What has gone wrong? - the construction of hawker centres were totally stopped for 2 decades, and new towns such as Sengkang and Punggol have no hawker centres. Private syndicates are allowed to build their major food centres (such as the one at Sengkang central), causing inflation in the prices of food (at least they are rectifying this problem) COE: - to control vehicle population What has gone wrong? - car dealers and taxi companies allowed to hog quotas and bid in open markets - fluctuations so large that the same car can cost double in two years ERP: - to ease traffic congestion at major motorways during peak hours - to replace the Area Licensing Scheme in city areas What has gone wrong? - ERP also implemented in non-major motorways and during non-peak hours - becomes a revenue-generating sort of tax applied to the drivers
  10. from Yahoo : Jury finds no negligence in trial over man's 8-month erection By Myles Miller | Reuters
  11. came across this vid on youtube. find that it is quite good to discuss.
  12. When I compare today's private properties for the mass market with those older ones, I can't help but to notice the disturbing trends: 1) Disproportionate balconies and aircon ledges --- I understand there was that 10% bonus GFA thing but aren't all the building plans supposed to be approved by authority? When you can barely fit a L-shaped sofa in your living room, what do you plan to do with that gigantic balcony? Outdoor dining for all 3 meals in tropical Singapore? 2) Cheaper material --- homo tiles in livng/dining halls and laminate floor in bedrooms? 3) Mini bedrooms -- I've seen 4-bedroom units for <1300 sqf and I was already amazed, and I think newer ones now come with even smaller sizes??? Better still, in that tiny space there are still 4 toilets (incl. the maid WC), one (sometimes two) balcony and at least one big A/C ledge! So why the need to even lay the floor with laminate since it's all gonna be covered by your bed and mini-wardrobe anyway? 4) Convert every inch of open space into a pool --- there is hardly any walking space in many new condos today as it's all taken up by pools, square, round, oval, and you name the shape. I guess all residents are expected to roam around in swimming attire between say, your block and club house and BBQ pits. While I can understand the incentives for developers to be obssesed with bay windows and balconies, what on earth is the incentive for so many pools? Cheaper to build pools than pathways/gardens/play grounds? Any other unpleasant trends?
  13. Mum went to bank with 3 chqs, total $97,720. Open FD with bank at $90,000, so the rest $7,720 put into a saving account. FD settled....acknowledgement receipt printed. Passbook also printed and all done. Came home.....mum discovered instead of $7,720.....the bank printed $9,720. Mum told me she saw all the forms and other documents duly stamped and signed by the bank. Any fault with mum,she asked??? She said trobluesome go back to them.
  14. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...-blood-20130314 (NB: Not sure why the above link needed to be logged in & so the article cannot be accessed unless you are a subsriber) As such I will recall from my memory this incident which was published in the reader's column from zaobao a couple of days back. Remembered this case because it was quite a serious lapse. According to this disgruntled reader they had a horrible experience at a local hospital. IIRC their 84 year-old grandma was warded & needed a blood transfusion. When the nurse tried to perform the transfusion, one of the relatives who was a nurse or was trained in medical procedures was astonished that the blood to be given was of type O+ but their grandma's blood type was AB. She quickly told the nurse who was adamant that the blood type was the one prescribed by the doctor & insisted on performing the procedure. Angered, the relatives quickly summoned the nursing manager & the latter was nonchalant about the mistake. When pressed, the nursing manager was reported to say that she had already apologised what more the relatives wanted. Really jialat... [shakehead]

  16. I thought they expand that stretch to ease the congestion for cars heading towards Lornie road blocking up the PIE, but after they open the expanded stretch, they close the 1st and 2nd lane, it's more jam than ever now....
  17. network down since morning........... WTH
  18. Something is very wrong with the system........ They say its to control car population blah blah..... However, I still experience jams like nobody business everyday........ I don't mind paying even $100-$200K for COE if it helps to clear up the roads.. But whats the point of paying so much if roads remain so clogged up everyday??? Others don't have COE, also jam up. We have COE also jam.... Well, its high time for LTA to do something to really reduce car population. Btw, one very good suggestion is that COE has to be paid up in cash. Not lump together with car installment. No $100K for COE? Don't get a car, simple as that.
  19. A Ah-Long-Clown caught in action : From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._wrong_car.html Posted on 12 Nov 2012 Bungling 'Ah Long' caught vandalising wrong car A STOMPer's car was wrongly vandalised by a loanshark, and unfortunately for the loanshark, his actions were caught on the car's camera. The STOMPer wrote: "On November 11 2012 at around 6.30pm, my family and I were heading out to a family dinner. As we approached our car, we noticed there were scribbles on it. "We immediately knew it was done by an Ah Long or his ka kia. The problem is, we do not owe them any money. "Where we live is a good few kilometres from his stated target. In the picture, the person mentioned lives at Clementi West Avenue Street 2, but my family and I live at Clementi Avenue 4. "He obviously got the wrong family. After figuring out what happened, we lodged a police report and went home to look at our car camera. "Take note that the footage is not in real time as I have fast-forwarded through some parts. "The timing is also not accurate as the car camera was imported from Korea, hence the wrong timing. "All in all, this man did not only pick the wrong car, he also picked a car with a camera installed." Check out the beedeos...
  20. The Alliance Meet 2012. Nothing's Wrong, Everything's Right. One of the things i've always wanted to see happen to our small local automotive community had finally come to fruition this afternoon. A mega meet of sorts with no barriers to entry, regardless of marque, style or purpose. A spot would be reserved for you as long as you had the drive to participate. While most of the cars present were of the JDM variety, a strong showing of VWs, MINIs and a handful of BMWs kept the Euro flame alive. Perhaps if another meet happens again in the future, we should put together a BMW.SG crew? Enough from me now, let's dive straight into the pics! As mentioned above, here's the bevy of MINIs from the local MINI enthusiast group, MINImob. ...and THAT's how they roll! This stunning 1st generation Exige came decked out with a full-on CF body. It had a mighty potent powerplant inside as well. There were a couple of other Elises and Exiges running around. Insert "Initial-D" comment here. There were a few Audis present as well, not many from the 3-pointed star but i think this AMG makes up for the numbers. Some cars were less "showy", but this definitely looked more purposeful then any showcar. An interesting Thai plate on this Euro R.
  21. I think ji bai jia luk liao. When to WS to change ATF, wanted to drain and fill with toyota T-IV because my manual call for JWS 3309, found out that JWS3309=T-IV. The WS told me not to use toyota T-IV and use the original ATF. Stupid me thinking that they were refering to the original GM ATF, agreed. Left my car there and went for lunch, but because i drive a optra, the WS take it that it must be a kimchi car and pour in hyundai SP3. siao liao, now can feel the changing from 1st gear to 2rd gear like dancing liao, kind of like throwing clutch from 1st gear to 2rd gear. call up a few places if they can do an ATF flush, most either do not have T-IV or charge $200. anyone know of any places in the west area where I can bring my own oil to do a ATF flush? thank you very much.

  24. This video was posted on Youtube. Do you see anything wrong here? Looks pretty good and normal to me, with the cyclist being pretty responsible. FWIW, I live around that area, cycle regularly and had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't me - 'cus I would be riding exactly the same way. Also, it was said in MyPaper today by some govt lackey or other that dun need cycling as a commuting option as the public transport system is enough. [hur] My opinion is obvious - but what does youse fellahs reckon?
