  2. damn creative.... STOMPer Kilroy was amused when he noticed some similarities between the couple sharing an MRT train seat and the priority seat sign just above them. In an email to STOMP today (Mar 1), the STOMPer says: "Here's a great one. "I really love these priority seats. "Seems like couples do have priority seats in the train after all. Thanks SMRT/SBS for being so thoughtful!"

  4. Just something to share. Today, after parking my car, I found a car with looks like new set of tyres. On closer inspection, it looks like the direction is wrong. Isn't that so dangerous?? Instead of cutting water, it may go over it and aquaplane. Doesnt the tyre shop where that was installed check?? What kind of tyre shop would risk the life of the occupants in the car?? Guess noone should take it for granted that all tyre shop will do a good job. anyway, I remember on a previous post here where a car had an accident, someone mentioned the tyres were pointing the wrong direction. If this car were to skid and crash, will it be the fault of the driver? Hmm........

  6. The guillible will suffer like a few months ago - politicians tell of NO impending recession as Spore is No. 1 in the region I am not sure if this announcement is irresponsible shouldnt they be preaching prudence among the citizens http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...1107-98911.html Spend if you can Fri, Nov 07, 2008 The Straits Times 'If you have sufficient savings and can afford to spend, you should continue to spend on life's little pleasures. Take your family to the movies, shop, dine out at restaurants and hawker centres, go for your regular foot massage, indulge yourself at a spa, take a taxi, donate to charity and so on. This way, we keep the economy going. In fact, I'd say that when times are a bit slow, we may get the best bargains.' - Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, urging those with the means to continue spending, or the economy 'will really go into a recession'
  7. Last Friday first thing to my car found a parking ticket on it. Very strange as I have a season parking on it but I was parking on a white lot due to the season lots are full. So after taking a look at it, it shows all the details correct (lot number, timing, no display of parking coupon) but only thing is a wrong car plate number! The vehicle number shown is SF*3*44E, where mine starts with SGX9**** not even close.... sigh.. whats up with the parking warden. So anyway was wondering what should I do. I had just sent an email to HDB to tell them of this mistake, but to the bro of vehicle number SF*3*44E,if happened to read this and is in the carpark of bedok south blk 19a on friday night 26th sep around 7:50pm, do drop me a msg so I can pass to you the ticket and see how it goes.

  9. ok.. actually, i have this problem all the while but just too lazy to send in and get it check..i realise the problem for the first time when i went back to kl ..... when i travel at high speed, let's say above 150km/h, very high chance my horn sound by itself... i have to press the horn to stop it... it seems to be due to vibration which causes short circuit somewhere to activate my car horn..... i cannot replicate and wont know when it will come but if i continue to travel at 150 and above, once a while, the horn sounds.. can be a few times if i maintained at high speed but sometimes, it doesnt have problem... not sure is it due to my wiring or the steering problem.... i change to magnum2 horn the very first day of car collection... quite sure it is due to lousy wiring work.... anyone has experience and think otherwise?
  10. SINGAPORE, Aug 9, 2008 (AFP) - Officials in Singapore have changed the direction of the world's biggest observation wheel because feng shui masters said it was taking good fortune away from the city, a report said Saturday. The Singapore Flyer, which opened earlier this year, had originally revolved so that it rose to face the business district and went down overlooking the sea, the Strait Times newspaper said. However, masters of the ancient Chinese art of geomancy convinced the wheel's management to reverse it so that it was not taking fortune away from the city. "A number of feng shui masters had approached us to tell us that the Flyer is on the perfect site to pick up the good qi (energy) flowing into Singapore, but it was going in the wrong direction," said Florian Bollen, the Singapore Flyer's chairman. "The Flyer was going against the sun and taking fortune away from Singapore." Bollen likened the change to the "completion of a perfect movie" to give a better story, but added that it cost the company a "six figure sum," the report said. For visitors now riding one of the wheel's 28 air-conditioned capsules, their view starts with beaches and housing estates in the east and culminates with a vista of the business centre. At 165 metres (545 feet), or 42 storeys, the Singapore Flyer is 30 metres higher than Britain's London Eye, said builders Great Wheel Corp. Despite being a modern city Singapore is a largely ethnic Chinese nation, where traditions still hold sway.

  13. Saturday June 28, 2008 No-nonsense status dented INSIGHT DOWN SOUTH BY SEAH CHIANG NEE Not all is right with the Home Affairs Ministry, the frontline body that overlooks security, after a series of glaring blunders. One of the most hard-pressed leaders in Singapore today is probably Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng, who heads the police force. It is an unusual spot for Wong, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, to be in. In fact, no minister in charge of security in this city has been subjected to the kind of pressure that he is facing now. There is a reason for it. Since colonial days, Singapore

  16. I drove to Bedok Market today for lunch and I wanted to make a U-turn. I saw a van at about 100 meters away and the van was not travelling at high speed. After the turn, I proceeded, but then this idiot sped up so that not to allow me to be in front of me. I didn't notice that he sped up but as the road narrows into single lane he started honking and almost knock into the front right side of my car. I just show an apologetic gesture and drove on. These ppl.... So what if they win?
  17. Inspired by this... http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/General_C1...affic_P2368100/ Something similar to bring up. For those who work around Hong Leong building or for some other reason, is familiar with that place. Usually it will be jam packed after office hours at telegraph street. At the end of it, all the cars will make a right turn which is all jammed up. It is also perpetually all jammed up (because of the jam at street in front) along telegraph street and right in the middle of it, there is yellow box for the car coming out of the Hong Leong building carpark. However due to the jam, if the straight going vehicles on telegraph street do not inch forward into the yellow box, they can be waiting there forever. So, is it technically wrong for the straight going vehicles to occupy the yellow box in this case?

    Am I wrong?

This morning, I was on my way to work on the second lane of CTE towards town. There was this light blue vios (the new version) that came in from Yishun slip road and then was on first lane. Interestingly I began to notice that this vios is hogging the first lane because I was on second lane and realise that I was on 70-80 km/h and had overtaken the vios. Soon after there was a whole long queue of vehicles behind this vios.... Then around the bend of CTE before YCK exit, I signalled right, wanting to go to the first lane because there is a slow lorry in front of me. This vios started to increase its speed and wanting to prevent me from going into the first lane. From my angle and view, he still had at least one to two car length space when eventually I sped up and entered into first lane in front of him. He was not very happy and started blasting his horn at me.. ...I checked my rear view mirror. He was still one car length behind....I mean WTH....Why horn at me? After overtaking, I increased my speed to 90-100 km/h and before long, I was way ahead of this vios and by the time, I reached Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 exit, cannot even see the vios... I just find this strange mentality of Singapore drivers. I am a Singaporean, born and breed here. But somehow this puzzled and perplexed me ever since I started driving on the road many years ago. You like to hog the road on first lane and when people want to overtake you, you speed up and refused people.. ..Come on, what are you thinking?

  21. Investor Jim Rogers says Singapore to lose money on US banks INVESTMENT guru Jim Rogers believes that US bank stocks could fall further and predicts that Singapore's state investors will lose money on their multi-billion dollar investments in Citigroup and Merrill Lynch. 'I'm shorting investment banks on Wall Street,' the long-time commodities bull told reporters on Wednesday at a launch event for ABN AMRO certificates linked to commodities. 'It grieves me to see what Singapore is doing. They are going to lose money,' he added, referring to investments by Government of Singapore Investment Corp and Temasek in Citigroup, Switzerland's UBS and Merrill Lynch. Mr Rogers, an American who co-founded the Quantum Fund with billionaire George Soros in the 1970s, now lives in Singapore as he wants to raise his four-year-old daughter in an environment where she can learn Mandarin Chinese. Mr Rogers, who also writes investment books, said Wall Street had to work off 10 years of excesses and predicted that losses linked to risky mortgages will eventually spread to credit card bills, student loans and other debt. -- REUTERS http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_213576.html looks like 10% GST and more gantry soon...
  22. Buyers nabbed in raid slapped with heavy fines One man is fined $5,000, for a carton; another has to pay $2,000 for two packs of illegal cigarettes By Teh Joo Lin & Chong Chee Kin SILVER Honda stopped along Woodlands Road last week, where the driver bought a carton of cigarettes from a streetside peddler for $50. Seconds later, he was braking again, this time at a police roadblock 300m down Woodlands Road, known as a haven for dealers of contraband smokes. The Singapore Customs fined the driver $5,000, a tally representing the maximum fine of $500 for every pack. The bust on Wednesday signalled that the authorities are not letting up in their battle to stamp out demand for illegal smokes. The same roadblock netted three others, including an 18-year-old taxi passenger fined $2,000 for purchasing two packs. As a repeat offender, he was subject to fines twice as high. The technician said: 'That's one month's pay. I won't be doing this again.' The Straits Times was given a rare insight into how the authorities work to catch buyers, with a first-hand look at the roadblock last week. The barrier was put in place by officers from the Customs and Jurong Police Division. Their 'scouts' planted themselves along Woodlands Road and radioed ahead when they spotted a buy. The driver of the Honda, who did not give his name, was surprised to be nabbed in the dragnet. He later said sheepishly in Mandarin: 'I have bought before, but this is the first time I've been caught. I didn't know they were going to do this.' The four - caught in under an hour - will have to cough up over $10,000 in fines in total. In all, they had bought about 20 packs for $5 each, less than half the price in stores. All were handed the maximum fine. Last year, 6,012 buyers were collared, more than 21/2 times the 2,268 in 2006. Urging the public to resist illegal smokes, a Customs spokesman said: 'Our actions will be more effective if end-consumers stop buying...from illegal peddlers.' The authorities are also targeting peddlers, with 857 caught last year, 12 per cent more than the 763 nabbed in 2006. A day before the roadblock operation, Customs and police officers, including those from the Special Operations Command, had pinned down two more suspects along Woodlands Road. Aged 19 and 28, the two immigration offenders had 118 packs on them, according to the Customs spokesman. He said operations against buyers and sellers will continue at hot spots such as Woodlands Road, as well as islandwide. http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Sto...ry_212903.html i wonder if his boss needs a new replacement....
