  1. LONDON: Following almost a year of tough negotiations, Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone insisted on Monday that his Formula One Management (FOM) company had agreed terms with organisers to stage the Singapore Grand Prix for another five years after the current contract expires in September. Mr Ecclestone's remarks - made in an exclusive interview with TODAY in the British capital - came just hours after Second Minister for Trade and Industry S Iswaran told Parliament that negotiations between race promoter Singapore GP and FOM were "still ongoing". Mr Ecclestone, 81, told this newspaper that all obstacles preventing the deal from going through have been resolved and that the timing of the official announcement of the contract renewal will be decided and made by the Singapore Government. An option for two more races until 2014 - after this year's edition from Sept 21 to 23 - would have kicked in had FOM and the Singapore authorities decided to walk away from the negotiating table. "Everything that was in the way of the Singapore Grand Prix continuing for another five years has been cleared," said Mr Ecclestone, chief executive officer of F1 commercial rights holder FOM. "I'm happy that this is out of the way because Singapore has been good to F1 and the night race has also been equally good for Singapore." Earlier on Monday, in a written reply to a question by Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Member of Parliament Liang Eng Hwa, Mr Iswaran also reiterated that Singapore will continue to host the race "only if the terms for a full five-year extension are economically viable". "We hope to see a mutually agreeable outcome soon," he had added. Over the weekend, Singapore GP executive director Michael Roche told reporters that money was at the centre of talks to renew the current contract. Despite being snowed under with work after Sunday's British Grand Prix, which was also attended by Singapore negotiators, Mr Ecclestone was keen to reassure that all was well with Formula 1's only night race. Said Mr Ecclestone: "It has always been my intention to see that this race in Singapore continues beyond our current deal. Now that the negotiations are finally over, I am looking forward to go to Singapore for this year's event because I've always enjoyed it." First held in 2008 on the 5.073 km Marina Bay street circuit, the rights fee to stage the Singapore Grand Prix is believed to have cost Singapore organisers US$35 million initially, and after yearly increases, peaked at about US$42 million last year. It cost another S$150 million to prepare for each race, and 60 per cent - or S$90 million - of that amount is footed by the Singapore Government. A feasibility study to review the benefits of continuing with the race here beyond the first agreement was conducted by authorities after the 2010 edition. It revealed that in the first three years, the night race raked in a total of more than S$420 million in tourism receipts, while an average of more than 110,000 international visitors came to Singapore annually. In terms of global reach, the race also attracted a total of 300 million television viewers worldwide. - TODAY
  2. The SDP reported on this website about the plight of 88-year old Mr Dawart Abdul who was suffering from prostate problems and, as a result, was incontinent. The urine odour in his house caused much unhappiness among his neighbours. Members of the SDP's Community Services Unit visited the octogenarian and brought him to consult our healthcare panel member Dr Leong Yan Hoi. We paid Mr Dawart a follow-up visit last week and found out that the Care Corner Family Service Centre at Woodlands and Community Development Council had provided Mr Dawart a wheelchair, some taxi vouchers for transport, and a one-time supply of food rations. But that's just one side of the story. What the Government gives with one hand, it takes back with the other. Mr Khamis, a friend who is living with Mr Dawart and taking care of him, showed us a registered letter dated 21 June 2012 from a lawyer's firm representing Sembawang-Nee Soon Town Council. It demanded payment for outstanding Town & Conservancy Fees amounting to $177.50 (below, left). For good measure, the letter stated that a court order would be issued if the payment is not made within 14 days from the date of the demand. The Town Council was not the only one that was demanding payment from an elderly man who did not have enough money to even see a doctor for his illness. SP Services sent a letter to Mr Dawart's home to remind him of the outstanding electricity and water bills that he has not paid. The bill amount was $330.96 (below, right). Mr Dawart's problems didn't end there. After we had taken him to Dr Leong's clinic for his consultation, Mr Khamis brought Mr Dawart to the polyclinic for a follow-up check up. Even though no medication was provided Mr Dawart was told, according to Mr Khamis, that $50 would be deducted from his Medisave Account, and another $5 in cash payment for

  5. Is it just me? Seems like after Prof Lim's shock therapy theory on wages, the labour activists are suddenly urging more pay increments for low-wage workers after the initial round of strong rebuttals by the powers that be. And now this. In any case if the local bosses faithfully complies with what the survey says then it is good news for all of us salaried employees especially those from the financial sector. Hurray. 8. No wonder there are so many millionaires around Business Times - 28 Mar 2012 Nassim Park Residences subsale tops gains: Savills By KALPANA RASHIWALA THE most profitable subsale (in dollar terms) of 2011 generated a near $6.2 million profit. It involved a unit at Nassim Park Residences that was purchased in July 2008 for almost $18 million and sold in April last year for slightly over $24.1 million, according to Savills' analysis. Nassim Park Residences accounted for four of 2011's 10 most profitable deals, followed by The Trillium at Kim Seng Road and The Orchard Residences, with two deals each. In all, 62 subsales in 2011 generated a profit of $1 million or more. These included 10 units at The Orchard Residences and eight units each at Nassim Park Residences and Marina Bay Residences. Savills examined URA Realis caveats data for subsale deals and tried to find previous caveat records for the same units; where it found matches, it worked out the holding period for the subsales and the profit or loss. The latter was calculated as the difference between sale and purchase prices, and took into account the seller's stamp duty but not the standard buyer's stamp duty, agent fees and other expenses. In percentage terms, the two most profitable deals of the 2011 subsales involved two units at Southbank at North Bridge Road, which achieved returns of about 167 per cent and 142 per cent involving holding periods of 4.58 years and 4.75 years, respectively. The units were bought for $561,000 and $764,000 in 2006 and sold for $1.5 million and $1.85 million in January and April 2011, respectively. Percentage-wise, the biggest loss among 2011 subsales was 45.9 per cent, recorded by a unit of 527 sq ft at Fifty-Two Stevens. It was bought for $873,000 in March 2010 and disposed of in August 2011 for $472,500. The biggest absolute-dollar quantum subsale loss last year was about $1.3 million for a unit at The Cascadia in Bukit Timah. It was bought in Q4 2007 for about $7.3 million and sold in May last year for $6 million.

  11. No public transport fare adjustments can be expected this year, said Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Lui announced that public transport operators are currently facing higher costs -- especially on their bus operations -- and hence, the government should not be in a rush to review this year's fare adjustments. Lui added that the current fare formula is due for review this year and that any fare adjustments that were not made this year will be taken into consideration into next year's fare formula. With no changes to fare adjustments, the disabled and polytechnic students will not get to enjoy any fare concessions. Although Lui expressed sympathy for these two groups of citizens, he maintained that "not all of these requests [to implement fare concessions] can be addressed immediately or entirely within a single fare revision exercise". In addition, Lui also asked for patience from the Members of Parliament who had advocated fare concessions for polytechnic students, before adding that the Public Transport Council (PTC), which is the body that regulates fares, is "acutely aware" of the requests for concession and will co-operate with transport operators to consider these requests. Low-income earners at losing end Singaporeans expressed concern with Lui's announcement, with many anticipating fare adjustments in next year's formula. Others also noted that the static fares will no doubt affect low-income families who are already struggling to make ends meet. Said Facebook user Ong Yongjie, who responded to Yahoo! Singapore's wall post, "Transport minister Lui Tuck Yew should get our approval first
