  1. Just like the thread on a Alfa with many owners the other day. I thought this was interesting as well for a rather new X3 which is a highly sought after model to have 3 owners in less than 2 yrs. Possibly a lemon ride with plenty of problems? http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=409965&DL=1000
  2. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/wages-in-private-sector/1137196.html Any bros saw this article...? Just some quick observations... a. I am quite sure I didn't get half of that 5.3%, and so did my whole company on average b. Is the government going to increase costs of living based on such data? ie raise bus fares again c. how did the statistics come about in the first place? Quite frankly I am worried when I see such stats..shows I am way below national average once more..
  3. A 30-year-old man was sentenced to a year in jail on Monday for snatch theft, despite his attempt to evade arrest by hiding in an uncovered manhole that he had accidentally fallen into. Muhammad Ibrahim Abdul Kafoo, 30, had pleaded guilty to snatching the handbag of lawyer Lesley Fu in April outside Chijmes near City Hall. On April 29, he walked towards Ms Fu and ran off after grabbing her red handbag. She went after the thief with two police officers, but they lost sight of him near some road works being carried out near Saint Andrew's Cathedral. It turned out that the man had fallen through an uncovered manhole at the worksite, and decided it was a good place to lay low till his pursuers gave up. He stayed hidden for about 15 minutes, emerged completely soaked, and took a taxi back home. 5. Those responsible for food wastage included food manufacturing and catering industries and hotels. Every day last year, each person in Singapore wasted an equivalent of one packet of economy rice or nasi padang. All this added up to an astounding record of 796,000 tonnes - the weight of about 1,420 fully loaded Airbus A-380s - of food waste, according to National Environment Agency statistics released this month. This marks a steep 13.2 per cent rise from the 703,200 tonnes dumped in 2012, and is the sharpest spike in at least six years. Before last year, food waste had typically gone up between 1.6 and 6.7 per cent year on year since 2007. "It's an extremely steep rise and it's rather disturbing that there is a distinct lack of awareness and nonchalance to food security issues," said Singapore Environment Council chief executive Jose Raymond yesterday. The amount of food waste, which includes cooked food and expired packaged products, last year is a 42.4 per cent leap from the 2007 figure, far outpacing the 17.7 per cent growth in national population. Raymond blamed rising consumer affluence, a growing food industry that is "constantly bringing new delicacies to the table", and a lack of public awareness on food waste. An affluent society has resulted in habits such as "not finishing up our food (because) the taste is not up to par or the inclination to load up our plates when in front of a buffet line", said Food and Beverage Managers' Association (FBMA) president Cheong Hai Poh. He revealed that FBMA has already been studying food practices in Europe. The problem has also permeated every link in the supply chain, said Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman in Parliament last week. Among those culpable included food manufacturing and catering industries, food and beverage outlets as well as hotels. The latest statistic has surprised Restaurant Association of Singapore president Andrew Tjioe, who is also the executive chairman of Tung Lok Group. "I have seen restaurants with waiters who keep customers from over-ordering," he said. "People also dabao (take away) leftovers, it is not shameful. I do so even if I have only a little bit of food left." He believes catered occasions, such as buffets and banquets, were the prime wasters. People also tend to cater more food than required, said Tjioe. "But caterers wouldn't dare to cut down in case the demand is there and food is not enough." He suggested reducing Chinese banquet courses, which can have as many as nine dishes, or to cut the size of portions. Open-concept kitchens at restaurants such as Carousel at Royal Plaza on Scotts also help chefs gauge how much food is still available to diners, said its general manager Patrick Fiat. Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association president Thomas Pek, who said he will raise the problem at an association meeting later this month, urged more companies to work with charities in giving away food that is nearing its expiry date. He also suggested that more supermarkets and bakeries could mark down prices of their fresh produce near the end of the day. Despite the massive amount of food being disposed, recycling remains low. Last year, only about 13 per cent of the total was recycled, up 1 per cent from the previous year. This comprises mainly clean food waste such as spent grains from beer brewing and bread waste, which are converted to animal feed. Said Raymond: "With the amount of food waste being generated, it is probably timely for Singapore to revisit the possibility of food waste recycling." 8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqMjvVaMsE4 A man who was filmed throwing a kitten at a wall has been jailed for a year. Farid Ghilas, 24, sparked outrage in France after a video appeared online of him picking up the cat and hurling it towards a block of flats. Remarkably, five-month-old Oscar survived the attack. He suffered a broken leg but is expected to make a full recovery. More than 260,000 people signed a petition calling for Ghilas, who is of North African descent, to face "exemplary punishment" for his actions. He was charged with animal cruelty and faced up to two years in jail and a 30,000 euro fine. “He acted with a singular perversity and sadism that has shocked the entire planet,” said Emmanuel Merlin, the prosecutor. Ghilas, who has been subjected to racist insults and death threats since the video came to light, was jailed for a year and banned from owning an animal. 9. Coffee shop operator Kelvin Ling of 128 Choices Eating House at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 will keep his eateries open over the festive period to attract people who will be visiting their relatives nearby. Chinese New Year is typically a time for shop owners and their staff to rest, but some businesses will remain open as they see this as a perfect opportunity to reap profits. Supermarket chains, coffee shops and even foodcourts have chosen to stay open in recent years, with many citing increases in daily takings of up to 30 per cent, compared with an average day. Even 12 out of the 18 malls along the Orchard Road shopping belt will remain open this year, said the Orchard Road Business Association (Orba). They include Ion Orchard, Orchard Central, Paragon, Wisma Atria and The Centrepoint. Coffee shop operator Kelvin Ling, 35, said he noted a 50 per cent increase in patronage over the Chinese New Year holiday period last year at his two coffee shops. He runs 128 Choices Eating House at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 and HG 106 Food Place at Hougang Avenue 1. 10. http://business.asiaone.com/news/chinas-economy-faces-severe-times-year-premier-li Thursday, Jan 23, 2014 BEIJING - China's economy faces a severe time this year and the government will be watching trends closely to ensure stable growth, Premier Li Keqiang was quoted by state radio as saying on Thursday. "The situation that we face in 2014 remains severe," Li was quoted as saying. He did not elaborate. Li was quoted separately by the government's website as saying that officials will strive to keep consumer prices stable. Data this week showed China's economy grew 7.7 per cent in 2013, narrowly missing market forecasts for growth to slide to a 14-year trough of 7.6 per cent.

  12. I would love to work as a Protocol Officer for this company ...... Yahoo news: China rail employees punished after spending $137m on receptions Eight employees of China's largest railway building firm have been punished for spending more than $137 million on receptions, state media reported Tuesday, the latest move in the leadership's much-publicised anti-corruption drive. The state-run Global Times newspaper did not give details of the punishment but said another 57 employees of the state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation have been reprimanded, and one faces prosecution. According to the company's March 2012 annual report, CRCC spent 837 million yuan ($137 million) on receptions in one year -- equivalent to about 10 percent of its 2012 profits. The report comes amid public anger at official misconduct and a campaign by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who took office earlier this year pledging to tackle corruption at all levels of government. Last week the mayor of Nanjing, an eastern city with a population of about eight million, was removed from his post over graft allegations. Ji Jianye had been in the post since January 2010 and was fired for "suspected serious disciplinary violations", according to state-run news agency Xinhua. Former China railways minister Liu Zhijun, who held the position for eight years and was considered the "father" of the country's vastly expanded rail network, was sacked in 2011 and given a suspended death sentence this July for accepting a total of 64.6 million yuan in bribes to help 11 people secure contracts and promotions. The Global Times said 41 provincial-level officials had been summoned to Beijing earlier this month for a week-long class on transparent governance. Wahhhhhhhhh...... 1 year got 52 Saturdays and each Sat spend $1million & still got balance of $85million for other things. Like that every Saturday several officers can sleep with film stars ...

  18. Yesterday, I participated in a small discussion in the "Replying to The Average Singaporean cost of living" where a young lady, fresh out of Uni at age 22, was able to land a job in a bank that paid her at least $90K in the first year, incl bonuses, which allowed her to save $130K in 2 years, that allowed her to plonk down the down payment and costs necessary to purchase a freehold condo for $650K, in april 2009. I shall take her info at face value, that there are jobs out there paying $90K or more to young people without job experience. Of course, I realise that not everybody is cut out for those jobs - perhaps those are high risk high pressure sales jobs that pay high if times are good, but easily retrench if things don't go well. Ok - to start off let me state my interests. I am a humble guy - I am open to learning from anybody who can teach me to be better. Can anyone share their experience or knowledge about these high paying jobs. 1. What are they? 2. What kind of qualifications to apply (eg. field of study - business, finance, engineering, etc? I take it minimum degree holder, better with honors). 3. Does one's age, gender, nationality, race, language or religion matter? Even if I may be too old or unqualified to apply myself, this info may be useful for anyone else to apply for. ================================================
  19. I am currently using 5W40 engine oil. Most of the time using Massimo Trimax. Tried Agip and others but the car felt sluggish. I can clearly feel the engine response is muted and only at high rev of about 4000 and above the performance gap is closed up. Would like to know any other EO on par or better than Massimo, and yeah, I can only use 5W40 grade EO. Regards.
  20. Need some views on what car would you guys would recommend with 165K. I do have my set of requirements and choices, just wanna hear any more views that may be helpful. And i'm talking about now, looking at changing earliest in Jan 2015, cuz me and gf spoke about future plans over the weekends.... Being a typical kiasu Sporean, better to plan first. I'm still saving btw..... By Jan 2015, I would have set aside $165K for my next car. I'm currently driving a FN2R, which I hope to sell for about $35K then... Would prefer not to touch this 35K because i'm setting it aside to mod my new car, insurance upfront etc etc, if possible. The rest will be used as a "top up" fund if i'm off my ideal car by then... or use it as an advanced fund for my next, next car (yeah i'm kiasu) lol Before I go on, 2 things 1) This is not a haolian thread, cuz I'm not saying im gonna buy a Lambo or Maser, Or Ferrari, so pls stay off if you wanna ka jiao my thread 2) I dun need motherhood statements like $$$ can be used wisely elsewhere, blah blah blue... Having this sum means I have my other needs comfortably budgeted for obviously (housing, investment, standard of living, future kids etc) - I just wanna pay my car in full, that's always my principle, don't intend to change that. I'm aiming for a 2012 Audi RS3. Or if the A45 AMG comes in anytime soon, I might up my budget to cater that as well (I never believe in first hand cars cuz its too much to pay to smell the new car smell lol). Requirements 1) Cannot be a 2-door car (family planning, possible pregnancy, etc) - I love GTR, but its not practical for me *sigh* not pro family I feel 2) Must have certain performance 3) Prefers conti car by then (if Japanese car, must be top breed jipun, like Evo, etc etc) 4) am not into luxury cars (So A4, 3-er, 5-er is not within my choice) Based on my requirements and budget, RS3 would be the best choice?? any views? thanks, I know its a long thread lol cheers
