  1. No offence but I feel sad for Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, as he continues to be "milked" by the current government. What's next, a new $10 note in 2025 to mark his 10th death anniversary, or a special $80 note to mark his wedding jubilee with Mdm. Kwa? Source: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/lky100-lee-kuan-yew-commemorative-coins-unveiled-mas-3488726 SINGAPORE: A commemorative S$10 coin marking the 100th birth anniversary of Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was unveiled by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on Monday (May 15). Minted in aluminium bronze, the gold-coloured LKY100 coins will be available at face value by application. The coins will have a diameter of 30mm, making them about 22 per cent larger than the Third Series S$1 coins currently in circulation. "The coin pays tribute to his strategic vision, boldness and indomitable spirit that transformed Singapore from a regional trading port to a global manufacturing, business and financial hub, creating opportunities for all Singaporeans," MAS said in a news release. "The design features a portrait of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, accompanied in the foreground by the Marina Barrage, representing Mr Lee's vision to build a freshwater reservoir in the city, strengthening Singapore's water resilience," the central bank added, describing the design on the coin's reverse. "The backdrop is the skyline of the Raffles Place financial district, and two heritage buildings which have witnessed significant milestones in Singapore's history – Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Fullerton Building/General Post Office) and National Gallery Singapore (formerly the Supreme Court and City Hall)." In addition to the Singapore Coat of Arms, the front of the coin features Mr Lee's name, his years of birth and death, the words "100th Birth Anniversary" and a dual latent image that shows the year 1923 when viewed from one angle and the year 2023 when viewed from another. The coin was designed by local artist Weng Ziyan, whose previous works include banknotes commemorating Singapore's 50th year of independence, Singapore's bicentennial and the 50th anniversary of the Brunei-Singapore Currency Interchangeability Agreement. Applications for the coins can be made from Monday until Jun 9 via a dedicated application website. Only Singapore citizens and permanent residents can apply, and each applicant can apply for up to five coins. "If demand is high, applicants may not be allocated the quantity of coins requested, but can be assured of being allocated at least one coin," MAS said. Each applicant will be required to indicate their identity number, mobile phone number and preferred bank branch for the collection of the coins. No upfront payment will be requested. Successful applicants will pay for their coins when collecting them at their selected bank branches. Banks participating in the distribution of the coins include DBS and POSB, OCBC and UOB as well as the Bank of China, HSBC, Maybank and Standard Chartered. Those who require in-person assistance to submit their applications can approach any community club or community centre, or the ServiceSG centres at Our Tampines Hub and One Punggol. Successful applicants will receive SMS notifications from mid-August, and the coins will be available for collection from September. Coins that are not exchanged during the collection window will be made available for exchange at banks by the general public, including non-Singaporeans. The number of coins to be minted will be determined after applications close, MAS said. The commemorative coin was announced earlier this year as part of a series of initiatives to mark the centenary of Mr Lee's birth. The late Mr Lee, who also co-founded the ruling People's Action Party, was born on Sep 16, 1923. He died on Mar 23, 2015, at the age of 91.
  2. CNA That is no mean feat. Jia Yu! Third national record in three days for Shanti Pereira as she smashes own 200m mark Shanti Pereira during the 100m women's heats at the SEA Games in Vietnam on May 18, 2022. (Photo: SportSG/Jeremy Lee) Matthew Mohan @MatthewMohanCNA 02 Apr 2023 01:02PM(Updated: 03 Apr 2023 11:21AM) SINGAPORE: Shanti Pereira set her third national record in as many days as she clocked 22.89s in the women’s 200m heats at the Australian Track and Field Open in Brisbane on Sunday (Apr 2). In doing so, the Singaporean smashed her own record of 23.16s set in the 200m final at the Brisbane Track Classic on Mar 25, where she finished third. Pereira’s new record time would have been enough for her to win gold at the last five editions of the Asian Games. "I’m honestly still in disbelief," she told CNA in the evening. "It’s a major milestone for me so it feels incredible." On Saturday, the 26-year-old also broke her own new national record in the 100m, winning the final in Brisbane in 11.37s. That was 0.01s faster than the previous national record she set in the heats of the event on Friday. Pereira was the fastest qualifier in the 200m on Sunday but did not compete in the final later in the day. Speaking to CNA, Pereira's coach Luis Cunha said the decision to pull out was to avoid overstretching her both physically and mentally. "This has been mentally very tiring (for her) ... Every time she ran in the past three weeks, it was equalling the national record or a national record. You have no idea how stressful this can be," he said, adding that 2023 will be packed with competitions. "We've a big challenge this season because it is a very long season with an unusual number of major competitions because of COVID-19 (postponements)." She has been training full-time since January, a change that proved extremely helpful, said Cunha. "She's very committed and she's had the perfect lifestyle, with the perfect discipline," he added. The coach described his protege's performance on Sunday as "world-class". "We cannot ask for more, it has been really a dream," he said. "We've had a fantastic start (to the year), let's see how we will finish."

  4. Saw an article by ST about popular food YouTuber Mark Wiens following his new collaboration with HBO on a new food series: Food Affair With Mark Wiens. Quite a good article to read for those who follow his channel as well. https://www.straitstimes.com/life/food/meet-mark-wiens-the-man-who-eats-his-way-to-international-fame Some food videos he shot in Singapore recently. For someone with more than 10 million subscribers, it's hard to believe that his production crew consists of only his wife and himself. Was looking forward to him opening his Pad Krapow restaurant (available in Bangkok) right here in Singapore but according to his interview with 8 Days, this isn't happening for now. Stream or download Food Affair With Mark Wiens on HBO GO from Nov 18. Is HBO free to stream?

  6. Police mark 200 years: Ex-traffic cop recalls high-speed chases to nab hell riders on Lim Chu Kang '40 tiang' stretch source: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/ex-traffic-cop-recalls-high-speed-chases-to-nab-hell-riders As the police celebrate their 200th anniversary with an exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, The Straits Times speaks to past and present police officers who are a part of the police force’s transformation. The retired police officer's face lit up when he spoke about police motorcycles and hell riders of the 1970s and 1980s. Senior Station Inspector 2 Nasir Said, 65, a former Traffic Police officer and trainer, recalled high-speed chases and waiting in cemeteries to ambush hell riders who raced their motorbikes along Lim Chu Kang's famed "40 tiang" stretch. Tiang in Malay means lamp-posts. The long hours of waiting meant that officers like him often became targets for blood-sucking insects, said Mr Nasir, who joined the Singapore Police Force in 1972. But his 32-year career, which was followed by another 13 years of re-employment, nearly ended prematurely. He contemplated leaving the force after the death of a squad mate in 1983 during a night escort mission. "I was very shocked," said Mr Nasir, who is one of the guides for the SPF200 exhibition at the National Museum Singapore. "He was close to me... we were brought up together. He was the one who had encouraged me to join the mobile squad." Mr Nasir had been leading the escort of a small RSAF aircraft when his colleague at the rear of the convoy hit a divider and crashed into one of the airplane's wings. The officer, who was from the same village in Jalan Kubis (now Ubi) as Mr Nasir, died of a broken rib puncturing his heart before he arrived at the hospital. But Mr Nasir did not know then as there was no physical bleeding. After being told of his friend's death at the hospital, he became distraught and was unable to convey news of the accident to the man's family. Mr Nasir's senior officers understood his predicament and allowed him to take a break during that difficult time. Till this day, he is grateful and said he cannot forget the support from his family members and supervisors.

  9. Hey guys most would know i recentley bought a lexus gs450h (2010 model) After changing the hybrid battery, most were good, till we heard some stuttering on the front door speakers at higher bass parts of the sound track. From what ive read online, ive read that this is a very very common problem for all lexus cars from that time period and it is possible to just repair the foam itself on the speakers without needing to replace the pair of speakers. Any opinions and experiences will help, as i rather repair than change to a lousier speaker in my car.. Thanks as always
  10. Do u guys think its a good idea to buy a 06-08 mark X? After hearing my fren bad experience with his 2nd hand 5 series, im kinda afraid of buying cars tats older than 6 years old. But i heard mark x dun have much issues, maybe standard wear and tear items. Is servicing and replacement of wear and tear higher than normal cars? Im driving a SSS at the moment and everything is pretty cheap. I also heard that mark x is very accident prone, as the car tend to fishtail due to rwd. I always drive my dad's merc around ( also rwd ) and i think the car is still pretty safe to corner etc, however i read around the forums and people are saying that mark x handling is very bad. anyone with experience driving 1 can enlighten me? What is fc like? im guessing 10-11km/hr? I does about 80% highway every day. Last questions, just asking purely for fun, how come never heard of people lup a bolt on turbo onto a mark X? i can imagine the power it could generate...

  14. Folks, recently my car had a loud screeching sound at the engine compartment. Looking into the engine bay I realize that the sound will be heard when the compressor kicks in. I went to Mark Cool to get an opinion. A mechanic attended to me and said that my compressor rotating disc is loose and caused the sound. As Mark Cool is a recommended workshop , I agree with him to change to a recon compressor costing $350. However, the sound did not go away. Upon asking the mechanic, he said it is due to a faulty camshaft pulley. My gripe is this. He now know that the actual problem is the camshaft pulley and not the compressor. Should not he refund me the repair cost as I am being charged for repairs that do not solve the problem. Please advice.

  19. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyLpmLBgOow Video shows American ambassador in South Korea after being wounded with a blade The US ambassador to South Korea, Mark Lippert, was slashed on his face and arm by a blade-wielding assailant shouting anti-war slogans in an attack in Seoul Thursday, police and television reports said. The United States strongly condemned the "act of violence" which left the ambassador bleeding profusely as he was taken to hospital, and said that President Barack Obama had spoken with him." The President called (Lippert) to tell him that he and his wife Robyn are in his thoughts and prayers, and to wish him the very best for a speedy recovery," said Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokeswoman. Witnesses said a man with a blade concealed in his right hand attacked Lippert as he was attending a breakfast function at the Sejong Cultural Institute in central Seoul. Video footage in the immediate aftermath of the attack showed the ambassador being rushed out of the building holding one hand to his bleeding right cheek, and his other hand smeared with blood with an apparent wound to the wrist. Lippert, 42, was bundled into a police car and rushed to hospital, where a US embassy spokesman said he was in a "stable" condition. http://news.yahoo.com/us-ambassador-attacked-seoul-231729097.html

  22. http://news.asiaone.com/news/showbiz...mson-apartment StompTuesday, Sep 10, 2013SINGAPORE - Local comedian Mark Lee has splashed the cash, forking out $2.2 million for a five-room apartment that he believes is great value for money. Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao on the set of his new production helmed by Taiwanese comedian-compere Kang Kang, he let on why he felt he got bang for his buck. The apartment, he explained, measures 2,680 square feet (248 square metres), has five rooms and was freehold, which translates to a valuable acquisition considering the current market conditions. These all translated to space, comfort and convenience since it could house his family of five, his mother and sister together at one location. However, he's not giving up his current home in Ang Mo Kio despite the purchase of this property because it was the 'birthplace' of his three kids and that he will most probably rent it out.
  23. Hi, would like to enquire about the gear (steptronic) in Mark X. It goes like this: While the car is stationary, and you shift it to D mode, and then you change to M mode, the gear engaged shown will be at 4. Is this correct, normal? No matter what I did, be it I shift down to gear 1 in M mode, and switch back to D mode, and then switch back to M mode again, it will always be in gear 4. how come it is not in gear 1, assuming that you are stationary and suppose to move off in gear 1 instead of 4. Mark X bro, kindly advise. Oh, I was intending to get the Mark X and happen to realize this while testing the car. Well, the dealer was not able to confirm though.
